It's completely impossible.

Since that probably won't satisfy you, I'll elaborate:

WAVs are sound recordings. They're actual recordings of sounds that will never sound exactly the same no matter how many times you record them, because they're based on actual sounds, and actual sounds always have a degree of imperfection.

MIDIs are not sound recordings. MIDIs are files that tell your computer to play back recordings of specific instruments. Thus, making one MIDI file, and then making another one exactly like it, WILL produce the exact same sounds every time, because the recordings that are played in the first MIDI are the same recordings played in the second MIDI.

Since it is impossible for a computer to distinguish between instruments in a recording (remember, the recordings handed to you in a MIDI are based on the assumption that they are actually recordings of the instruments in question), a computer cannot create a MIDI track based on what it "hears."

For example, depending on the surroundings (say, a concert hall as compared to a room in a humble home), a trumpet might sound the same as a trumbone, or vice versa.

Thus, it is impossible to convert a high-quality sound recording into a file of computer instructions. MIDIs are instructions, WAVs and CD-Audio tracks are recordings. They're incompatible with eachother.

RIAA Bites Hand That Feeds It!

After years of paying inflated prices for CD's that never had the push of payola or "sale" prices... I feel no remorse for the public revolting against organized music's stranglehood and monopolistic control over the industry. The lack of vision as far as marketing new talent... and complete disregard for the public's taste is evident bu the "clones" produced of any band that breaks the top ten. Now they seek to use these clones as spokepersons to reinforce their control over the freedom and diversity that file swapping creates. "Sharing" exposes listeners to an incredible amount of unheard and unpromoted bands... some of which are not even American.

The amount of cultural diversity shared through file swapping has created sales for overseas retailers as well as Americans who export. This effort to control the "free" movement of sounds between nations as well as Americans smacks of protectionism. An industry that has had total control over what we hear on radio now cries "foul" because freedom of choice has run rampant on the Internet. Now only the best out there make the sale... on an "even" playing field... where sales are no longer determined through radio overkill...or promotion and payola...but by the public's own determination of what it is willing to listen to...and pay for.

Filesharing is the ultimate "test" drive of music product. People will still buy music when they have found what appeals to them....only this time it is what THEY like to hear...or collect...not what radio or MTV has tried to dictate. The RIAA seeks to placate a mismanaged and once corpulent dinosaur. There's a new world coming...Get on the bus Gus...not the "A" train. Stop "A"lienating the customer...he's never wrong! Free markets determine sales...look at the VHS lawsuit and tell me it doesn't. Stay off of them blue suede shoes!

Adaptec Easy CD Creator question

I have several music files which, when I drag them
down to the playlist on my adaptec CD creator to burn
them onto a cd, only a portion of the file shows up on
the playlist. For instance, the file may be 45 minutes
long, but when I drag it into the playlist, only the
first minute or so shows up. I can play the files on
my Windows Media Player and the full file will play,
but I can't burn the full file onto a cd. This only
happens of a few of my files. All others work fine.
Any ideas?

Re: korg trinity

You need to define your Trinity as a new instrument in Sonar. Dont use the "GM sounds in Trinity" (allthough the Trinity doesnt have real GM sounds). Just rempa the tracks to use some of the (sequencer mode on your Trinity)original Trinity sounds.
The only problem is the ddrumtracks in the midi file, which is assigned to a GM drum style layout. That can be fixed by mapping a drumkit on the trinity so that the drumsounds on the Trinity matches the notenumbers of the corresponding GM drum sounds in the midi file. I.E. moving a bass drum in the Trinity to the same notenumber as the bassdrum in a GM drum setup configuration.
Hope this helps.

Tu ingles esta muy bien! Contesto en ingles para el beneficio de los demas.
I know how you can use combi's in your Trinity seq.
On the seq. mode page 1 you hit the tab marked "MIX"
(either1-8 or 9-16). Then hit the button all the way up on the right corner and hit "COPY FROM COMBI"
After that a dialog will appear on the screen. In it you simply choose wich combi you want and to what tracks you want to send it.

Removing drum tracks

Hi everyone please help me. I'm looking for software that you can download that lets tou remove drum tracks from MP3's and enables you to put them back on a cd without the drums. I have searched for so long but all i can find are vocal removers. Please get back to me A.S.A.P.

Re: Removing drum tracks

No chance of that Scott. You'd be removing sound frequencies which would mean your bottom end would suffer for starters. You would not be left with a very good result. The best way to remove the drums is to get the masters and mix the drums out. Otherwise, there is no software which will do the job as you require.

Cubase VST (all Steinberg products)

I've been checking out a lot of the various applications for use in a relatively small recording studio operation.
Protools seems to be overpriced when considering what I can get for less $$$.
I've (so far) found that "out of the box" capabilities of the Steinberg Cubase VST/32 as well as Nuendo exceed by a mile, what DigiDesign's Protools has to offer for a lot more money.
Steinberg doesn't charge nearly as much and seems to provide far more "plugins" without having us pay more.
Note: our hardware consists of:
Ramsa DA-7 mixer, MOTU 2408 sound input, P-IV@2.5gHz, Mackie SDR-24/96 HD recorder, Vocallist II, Q-Factor moniter spkrs, and a few odds and ends.
I am running ADAT(light-pipe) 24channels out of the DA-7 to the MOTU 2408 inputs, from the 2408 outputs to the SDR-24/96 HD inputs, outputs of the HD return to the DA-7 ADAT inputs.
The MOTU 2408 feeds all 24 channels/Tracks into the PC MOTU interface card via Firewire/Audiowire, and is
ASIO fed to which ever application (DigiDesign or Steinberg) I finally chose to invest in.

I would really like to get some feedback and ideas from you guys.

By the way SawStudio is way out in left field with their package. OVERPRICED and SHORT on CAPABILITY.

Re: Cubase VST (all Steinberg products)

I would check out Cubase SX before you buy.
They have made a lot of changes to it.

The fact that Protools does not support VST is a big negative point against it.

Re: Cubase VST

:I am using cubase VST 5 and have recently changed to a mac laptop imac and it won't work with OSX - is there a upgrade available.

Re: Cubase VST (all Steinberg products)

I've looked at Cubase SX, I don't think it supports the Houston Controller as VST and Nuendo does.

Thanks for your response. Jim

RIAA sets itself up for failure again

I don't know about anyone else, but this is an excellent time for me to purchase used CD's, CD's by independant artists (P.S., when you buy the CD from the artist, their profit margin goes WAYYYY UP) and CD's from artists with foresight, such as Janis Ian, who recognize the fact that music is a Baskin and Robbins type industry! (Sometimes you have to offer a taste to tempt the customer to buy, and it isn't wise to tell the customer who to share the goodies with)

The RIAA is the tool of the distributor. Often irrelevent to the artist, especially the songwriter, the RIAA focuses on the profit potential to be madfe by the label, as well as the folks who ship the product out to the retail stores, where it is treated just like the fabled widget. I can often buy excellent music at closeout prices, simply because it is not in demand, but if I want to listen to a top forty single, I must (by their estimation) pay through the nose, over and over again, as they waffle over which is the media of choice this week. Of course, I could record the same song off of the radio (if I don't mind a little sound degradation) or record it directly from the CD Quality (hmmm, not quite) feed from the Music Choice channels featured on my cable feed. If I want to go to the internet and check out Doug and the Slugs latest opus however, I now have to worry about a representative from the RIAA wandering by to bless me with a subpenea.

I supposedly pay a royalty for each and every recordable CD I purchase, and I pay almost fifty dollars a month for internet service, but for some reason, the RIAA wants to restrict me from the same priviledge I enjoy with my Television, movies and radio. Since I am not interested in the majority of the homogenized babyfood put out by the mutual admiration society they refer to as the recording industry anyway, this doesn't perticularly affect me, but I am irritated that so much of the gossip passing itself for news these days, is focused on this carefully fabricated issue.

If the RIAA really needs to justify it's own existence this badly, I would suggest it ally itself with the I.R.S. or Pat Robertson's Holier than thou club. I'm sure that either organization would find a lucrative round hole for them to park their square peg into.

CD surface-degradation?

Hello :)

I have a couple of CDs (a 2CD set) that I've had for about 7 years, but not played for maybe 3 or 4. I recently noticed that they both have dulled undersides - one around the outside inch or so, and the other further into the CD. This second one has _extensive_ 'crazy paving' scratches all around the outer inch of the underside. None of this damage was caused by me, and no other CDs stored with these two, have any such problems (including ones that I've had for the same amount of time). The first CD plays ok, but the second is jumpy (not too surprising!).

Any idea what has caused this and whether it is worth approaching the manufacturer?

Thanks!

Mia

RIAA Joke

Once again the RIAA have demonstrated their ignorance to the inevitable.
When will jounalists and reviewers get stuck into these leeches who prance around as if they actually do the music industry any good.
The major record companies have a miserable history of lack of forthsight, innovation and invention.
They wait until someone else succeeds then pull the dirty tricks to get control of those inovations.
They missed Rock and Roll by three years finally grabbing control of it via a concocted payolla scandal, Cassette tape which they desperately tried to halt and now the Internet that threatens not royalties but their firm grip and control on an entire industry.
MOST singer/songwiters never see a penny in royalties, ever.

I have an earlier version 2.1 of your software but it no longer recognizes my cd drive since upgrading to OS X. What is the charge to upgrage to 2.2?

playing cdg's on a laptop

Is it possible to play my cdg's on my laptop.
Is there any software either to purchase or download to enable me to do this

Try LD player...

It is a free program in a package called disc.txt...

Get it here: http://webclub.kcom.ne.jp/ma/takabin/eng/

Settings required are posted at the playground. This program will play the music and display the graphics right off of a CD+G disk if your CDRom is a RAW 96 drive.

:)

midifile question please

I have been thinking about buying a collection or two of songs from Ebay in Germany - on Midifiles.
What are midifiles and what software would I need to be able to play or make CD's from these midifiles?

thanks,

David

Re: midifile question please

MIDI files are DATA files containing instructions on when and what note is played.
they are NOT audio..

To hear music you would have to load the files into software that will play the notes on an instrument for you.
Most s/w sequencers can load midi files.
(Even Demo versions)
