Software to trigger midi seqences with computer keys

Hi Group

I've searched the whole net, but could not find a software that lets
me load prepared midi sequences on my notebook so I can trigger them
live while playing another instrument (bass or guitar etc.) by tapping
on my computer keyboard. Lets say I've got a strings arrangement on
key "S", so when I press "S" it plays that midi sequence once and then
stops again.

It would also be perfect if I could synchronize it with a given
midi-time signal so it plays in sync with my band-compagnion's
notebooks.

Only one I found is LoopTrax on http://www.mixvibes.com/ but that
thing is so buggy on win2k that I cant really use it.

Thanks so much for your help

Re: Software to trigger midi seqences with computer keys

Hi again,

Maybe I wasn't precise enough: I am searching for a windows-based
software that plays a midi sequence when a certain midi message
arrives or a key is pressed.

I found http://www.nosuch.com/keykit/ that (as far as I can see) does
all I want. But I am still open for other suggestions.

How do you draw midi fades in Cakewalk 8?

Surely there must be a way to draw in expression curves in Cakewalk
Pro Audio 8, but so far I haven't found the how to. Anybody have the
answer?

Thanks!

Re: How do you draw midi fades in Cakewalk 8?

Controllers Pain. Expression. Draw.

Pretty much RTFM. But I will admit that the Controllers Pain is part
of the Piano Roll.

Re: How do you draw midi fades in Cakewalk 8?

You may do so by using the Draw tool in the Piano Roll view
(the lower pane which you can resize). The Draw tool
is a free hand tool like paint where you can freely draw
Expression curves.

tip from me:

Instead of putting Expression (Control 11) as fade out,
to every track, why not try splitting the Track at current time
by clicking it at point (you may use Shift+F5 if you want to
select all tracks then right click ---> Split) and use
the Scale Velocity range from 100% to 0%.

I really hate using Control 11/Expression for applying
fade outs especially at the middle part of the song as
some synths (the Roland series and some software synths)
reverts back to Expression value 127 when abruptly
stopped at the middle of the song or while fading out
producing those ugly loud tones.

You may also use Velocity scaling instead of Expression
by adjusting it's range vice versa.

Hope this technique will work with you guys!

Could you elaborate? I've looked there and find no expression control.

Next to the various cursor tools - arrow, eraser, etc, I see a drop
down window with the options Velocity, Wheel, ChanAft (after touch?),
control, rpn, nrpn

Nothing for expression as such. In Digital Orchestrator, there's an
"other" section which brings up a large selection of extra parameters,
one of which is expression. I don't see any such option here.

Go to piano roll view. Make sure to click on controller view pane so you can see a panel underneath the piano roll. Select volume, or
whichever effect thing you want. Then use the pencil to draw your level of effect. Hope that helps some.

Can anyone recommend a SIMPLE and cheap home recording prog?

Excuse this newbie question but I have used my Fostex 4 track to record a
few songs at home. But I have been searching for ages for 'simple to use'
software which does NOT take ages to learn and which is cheap to buy.
All I want to do is record a track.....then record another track (as I
listen to the first).....and then add other bits and pieces (harmonica,
harmonies, banjo etc). At the moment I'm not using a keyboard but hope to
soon to add sampled sounds (if I can find easy-to-use hardware). Am just
using a mic and (folk) guitar with pickup.
Any ideas appreciated. Chris

Re: Can anyone recommend a SIMPLE and cheap home recording prog?

Thanks for the replies, especially Tim. Quartz Audio Master looks good. Will
give it a good try. Much appreciated. Chris

Re: Can anyone recommend a SIMPLE and cheap home recording prog?

You seem to need a simple Sequencer
Before you part with any money - try AudioMelody
(blatant self-promotion - but I honestly think its what you want)
http://www.audiomelody.com/
GO to Downloads >> Sequencers
Then I recommend Quartz AudioMaster FREE, Massiva, and Cubasis InWired (in
that order)

Cheers

DAT or MD?

Hi

looking to branch out from purely instrumental music to include some
electronic experiments. Does anyone have any experience of using a MD for
sampling audio 'in the field'. How would the quality compare to a DAT?

thanks for the help

Chris
www.chris.a.long.btinternet.co.uk

Re: DAT or MD?

DAT (or even hard disk) would be the present professional choices at the
moment as minidisc is becoming an old compression format which cannot hold
as much data as DAT, and certainly not as much as a hard disk.

Minidisc is a good option for portability, and quickly putting down songs,
but for actual recording I would recommend DAT (or using a computer and hard
disk recording).

Re: DAT or MD?

MD is a compression scheme, so DAT is better quality. But!; don't forget
when getting into this: the era of digital tape is over. Makers of DATs and
ADATS have stopped making, and from what I hear, the heads left in stock is
all there is. Twelve years went by so quick!

HELP. Win98, ASIO drivers problem.

My rig= P2 AMD 700.Win98se, SBlive value.
Hi people
My PC is loaded with Sonar, Reason etc and I had the old problem of bad
latency. I've been constantly looking for ASIO drivers that would work with
Win98se to solve the latency problem. I came across a site which claimed
they had them. After some checking I downloaded the drivers and installed
them, now my PC is stuffed.
Things I have tried. Uninstalling the software using add\remove and device
manager. Running reg cleaner to clear all reg entries.Running SFC. Going
into safemode and removing all references from win sys folder. Checking auto
exec, config.sys. Reinstalling Windows. Reinstalling soundcard. Whatever I
do this comes up after reboot, "MMSYSTEM002 A device id has been used that
is out of range of your system".
The offending program that causes this message is " Nullsoft waveout plugin
v2.2"
I have searched for this program on my PC. I cannot find it anywhere.
I should mention that the website I got these drivers from is called the KX
foundation but I cannot be sure the problem lies in the software. On further
reading of the faqs it was revealed that the software should not be
installed on Win98se lite, (a version of Win98 that makes IE removable),
which is what I am running.
I do not want to format the drive but I'm pretty much beat in terms of a
fix. If anyone out there has any info or can help it would be much
appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: HELP. Win98, ASIO drivers problem.

I somehow deleted my HP audio from my add/remove file. Then I proceeded to empty my recycle bin. I need this because I have NO SOUND. Please help me if you can.

Re: HELP. Win98, ASIO drivers problem.

"MMSYSTEM002 A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system"

what does it mean? I am not able to run winamp or realmedia player.

kindly let me know how to solve this.

thanks

this is the the output plugin of winamp. have a look in the preferences.

ie adds some important system files. try installing the ie and reinstall
your soundcard driver afterwards. you can leave ie untouched if you don't
use it, but removing is no good solution. i had no problems with the kx
driver for my audigy.

Re: HELP. Win98, ASIO drivers problem.

Thanks for the advice. By re-installing most things (inc IE) and running
some cleaning programs things are almost back to normal.
Yes, that plugin was winamp telling me it could'nt initialise because the
wrong driver was installed ( sorry , should have checked that )
The only problem now is I can't seem to record for more than 2 mins before
Sonar freezes (dropout). I have 500mb sdram 133 and an AMD 700. This should
not be happening. There seems to be no problem with playing back a large
project, just when recording. I've tried adjusting buffer sizes and
increasing latency. I reduced a track from 10 tracks of audio to 5 tracks
mono and still the same problem.
Boy, I'm dying to sort this out then I can get on with actually making some
music.
Peace to all and thanks

Re: HELP. Win98, ASIO drivers problem.

if sonar freezes randomly it could be the ram or perhaps try a scandisk run
for lost clusters,. also try reinstalling sonar or if you can choose the
temporary disk, try another harddisk. since i don't have sonar or ever
worked with it, i can't give you any helpful tips for that.

DMPro Trigger Settings

Frustration killed the passion!! I am currently using a set of Hart
Studio's, and my pro snare is giving me fits. Using the dmpro is
pretty basic, but I can't seem to get a decent sounding kit in live
situations. My toms and cymbals do fine, but my snare goes nuts.
What basic settings are being used successfully. All my drums have
screen heads, tuned high to low, and I still have to beat the crap out
of the snare. Either double triggering or no triggering during fast
rolls....Got some tips, I am all ears......

Re: DMPro Trigger Settings

I know this will be of little help, but.....triggers are just a switch. An
FSR reads pressure as opposed to vibration, and was invented over 13 years
ago. Some artists really like products that utilize FSR.
http://www.alternatemode.com/katartists.shtml
Check out samples of my music to see how well the snare tracks!
I really do love the sounds in the DMPro!
Good luck.

Any Samplitude Users Out there?

I Just installed samplitude 6.0 , it records fine i just can't get
playback . i've checked playback devices over and over again, I
adjusted buffers and still no results. the last time i used
samplitude it was version 5.0 and had no problems with my old 500mhz
machine. I'm currently running a sony vaio 2.4ghz proccessor.
Any ideas or input on this problem would be helpfull.
well back to the dungen !

Thanks, Chimper

Re: Any Samplitude Users Out there?

There is a little white rectangle on the left of each track. In there
it picks the record and playback device. I find it always resets these
so that each time I open the project I have to return them to the
playback device I want, otherwise no sound. I'm sure I'm doing
something wrong but I have not figured out how to make the playback
device selection stay put.

Wich reverb to choose

I want to buy a reverb but i don´t know wich one is better for dance vocals.

Hi LAurens

You dont mention which models provided by the two brands are within your
budget but to
answer your question my experience is that the TC gives better perfromance
on hall and plate
settings than equivalently priced lexicon models.

However for sounds scapes and cathderal or canyon like presence you cant
beat LExy
Do well

resampling old songs

Hey im a potential ghost writer/producer and I have a few questions there is
this old song from the mid 60's early 70's I would like to use in a new
project but im wondering what kind of legal issues I should be concerned
about... I will not be using the actual music from the song or the actual
words just the melody and if I were to use majority of the words what kind
of legal issues should I be worry about ?

Creating a MIDI-processor out of an old pc

Re: Creating a MIDI-processor out of an old pc

Up until a couple years ago, I used Cakewalk 3.1 on a PC-386 with 8 MB
of RAM. It worked beautifully. With a $50 DB50XG daughter card, the
sounds weren't half-bad, either. Probably the best bang for the buck
I'll see for a long, long time. -- Richard

how to implement staccato?

I have begin to experiment with MIDI, and have written a little program
to convert note specifications to MIDI format. I have implemented
staccato for piano by issuing a "note off" event shortly after the "note
on". When I play the result with kmidi, the notes do not shut off as
specified, but continue to resound. The damper pedal is off.

Is there a trick to turning notes off? Does the piano patch specification
prevent staccato? Does kmidi have a bug? I'm stuck!

: Is there a trick to turning notes off? Does the piano patch specification

Many instruments are set to have a release time on the envelope,
which makes them sound (dying off with time) after the note off event.

What you might try is a note on at a very low velocity (1 may work
nicely) instead of the note off. That should trigger a new envelope,
at a much lower intensity. Most synths will not let a given note
number sound multiple times at once, so this can get a gating effect
on the sound.

Changing the envelope can work too, but it depends on the synth
design as to whether you can specify that. While most piano synths
cover the sustain pedal (on or off, on = long release, off = short
release time), most don't implement a soft/damper pedal or sostenuto.
You can "fake" a soft/damper pedal using a combination of filter (if
available) and expression, both of which will drop volume, but a sharp
low pass filter will cut out a lot of harmonics in a natural way.

Hitsquad Update - Message Board Spam Filter - Work at Hitsquad -

Hi Folks,

Just thought you might like to know about a few things
going on around here.

Message Board Spam Filter
Firstly we have upgraded this message board system with
an improved Spam Filter. It will take a couple of weeks
for the filtering to 'learn' what to hold for the
moderator and what to simply let straight through,
however we should see a significant decrease in some of
the Spam that's been posted here lately.

Traineeship
We have a new position available for a Trainee in
Business Administration - full details are available
on the Employment page.

Reduction in Pop-Ups
Actually it's pop-under ads that we provide here, and
over the last two weeks we have reduced the number you
will see by two. You are still likely to see a few during
a visit here, however you can get rid of pop-unders and
banners by becoming a Member.

It is my hope that over the course of this year we will
find enough music related advertisers to replace the
less relevant banners and pop-unders.

New Sponsors and Advertisers
Remember to support the sponsors who make this website
possible, new ones include MusicYo.com, SoundBlaster,
Recording Connection, MusicNotes.com, and Lulu.com.

Suggestions?
Do you have any suggestions for improving this website?
Post them here....

Until next time,
Jason Horton.
