MP3 from sound input on Mac OS X
I am looking for a Mac OS X native program that takes sound input port of a Powerbook G3 music and converts it to MP3. So far I've only seen Mac OS 9 programs that do this, and none of them work in Mac OS X's Classic mode. I already have the latest Soundjam license before it was stopped in production, and would be happy to pay up to $50 for a program that did this. Anybody know of any software native to Mac OS X that takes sound input in Mac OS X 10.1.2 and records it into MP3? Please e-mail your reply as I only found out about this from someone on Macfixitforums.com.

Drivers...
....are usually supplied by the Manufacturer therefore I would suggest that you go to the Card manufacturers site and have a look in their Drivers or Downloads section. They probably have one...

help!!
I have general midi cable connection for yahama keyboard. installed soundblaster digital 4.1 (game port) into presario 5000, but the internal sound card is over-riding the sound port. Running scorewriter Sibelius but cannot access any midi imput- programme telling me "external error"...is there an alternative cable to use that will fit directly into the presario without having to go through the game port???
Re: help!!
You could go with a USB midi interface. I recommend either Midisport 1x 1 or 2 x 2 or something from MOTU

Hey Martie,
Although I'm not 100% sure, I think the windows XP ripper has anti-sharing software embedded in it. This means that the mp3's you burn will only work on your computer and no one else's. Reguardless, a ripper like AudioGrabber (available at www.xing.com) will be a lot easier for you to use than anything Microsoft's labryinth-loving programmers can dream up.
The anti-sharing aspect of Windows XP ripper...
Actually, you have a choice when you rip, there's a check box which comes up which you can leave checked so no one else can access your files (without your permission), or you can uncheck the box and the files will be ripped so anyone can use them on any system... it's your option... so, no problem if you want files that anyone can use... just uncheck the box when the dialog appears, and it will give you the option every time...
cakewalk mixdown
As of lately, when I mixdown a export a recording from cakewalk to a wave file, the wave file will not work. It says it is of unrecognizable format. When I look at the properties/details it just says PCM with no HZ or bits listed. Any ideas?

Hey Tony,
First off, I'll tell you that I do not mix music myself. I mainly use drum programs to make loops for promotional stuff for the radio station I work for. There's a program called Rebirth I use that has some cool options to it. If you want the king-pin I'd suggest a program called FruityLoops. It's kick ass and has more knobs and spinning dials that you can shake a stick at. The one thing I can definitely help you with is your mixing software. There are a ton of programs out there, all with there own advantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion Cool Edit Pro is top of the heap. It is simple, VERY user friendly and yet has enough options to keep you busy well into 2002. As far as sound cards go, I use SoundBlaster Mp3 plus and have no complaints- although I do have a seperate amp hooked up and have noticed a small amount of clipping on overmodulated audio. If you want some more advice, e-mail me at jayacosta@hotmail.com and I can get answers for you (I know a lot of engineers.) Good luck.

What sound card and software do I need to record LPs onto CDs?
I have a Dell computer with integrated sound processor.
I want to record my LPs onto CDs. What sound card and recording/cleanup software is best for this project? I am looking to keep the cost reasonable. Any suggestions will most helpful. Thanks.
Re: What sound card and software do I need to record LPs onto CD
Soundcard? Any of the current mainstream cards will do - Creative Soundblaster, Turtle Beach Santz Cruz and so on.
Software? Almost any sound recording software will suffice. Personally, I use Cool Edit 96. As for restoration, there are some available but I've never had need to use them (that's down to a damn good turntable and cartridge). There are demo versions available, so try them and use the one which you think works best. Finally, to burn the files onto CD, Nero Burn or Easy CD Creator will do, although there are others available.
If you have a look in the software section, you'll find all the downloads you'll need.

Problems with Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro
Can somebody please help? I tried to get help for my problem from Cakewalk and while they were cordial and helpful they were confounded with my problem. I am using the Windows XP Home Edition operating system and am attempting to use Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro to record home brewed audio. The program works fine to record the sound and will playback wonderfully before the song is saved but when I try to open the song once saved I get an unknown error message and the project will not open. If anyone could figure out a solution or a work around I would be very gratefull. Thank you.
Digital Multitrack
I've been out of the music business for about 12 years, but used to do a lot of reel to reel multitrack and know my way around a computer now. I want to record guitar, vocals, bass, keys, and drum (machine) on multitrack computer software, be able to edit, add effects (chorus, reverb, delay...), basic eq., etc., and save to .wav to burn CDs. Would like to use an old Shure SM58 mic with XLR to pickup vocals, since I already have one (or some other inexpensive option). Could also mic the guitar & bass. Could use MIDI for the keys (don't have a keyboard now), and I need some drum machine software too. Any help as to where to look for freeware or inexpensive software to help with the recording/mixing and/or drum track would be appreciated. I've read about the Roland VS-880 and BOSS BR-532 and BR-8 digital multitrack units. These sound cool, but I need a less expensive option, and already have a fairly nice computer (pentium 833, 128MB RAM, win 98, 8 GB HD, sound card). Thanks.
Charlie...
Most people are using Logic Audio, Steinberg's Cubase, Cakewalk, ProTools LE or Free.. it would seem. All these programs offer good to excellent Audio and Midi sequencing are priced from Free to around £550, English.
Other than that, you will need a decent audio card (low latency which might count out any computer cards that are bundled with the computer when you purchased).
A mixing desk and some connecting leads. If you are mic'ing your guitars then you will be okay with a half decent mic and a little technique. If you plug the guitar's straight into the desk then you will need to do so through a DI (direct injection box (cheap)). Mic'ing the guitar amp with an SM58 can often be improved by unscrewing the front of the mic to clear the pop sheild.. Check it out...

Cat, just go to my tutorial and it will show you exactly how to convert mp3s into wavs using Winamp (which is free). This is an easy and in-depth tutorial and includes pictures to show you exactly how to do the conversion.

one man band
Hey guys,
Finding reliable musicians to play gigs is becoming increasingly difficult in my town. We need to set up a computer to play the music parts when a musician is not available. which set up or what equipment (hardware/software/ file format) should I use to produce the most live like sound?
that's a BIG question...
I doubt there is a small answer though and the big answer would be tooo big... ;0)
It might be worth spending the time to make the whole track electronically and then you could mute the people that actually bother to turn up. You could also record the parts in Audio to a multitracker and then do the same although the thought of sitting in front of a band of musicians and hearing a guitar solo from someone that's on holiday would be too much for me, to the point that I would probably leave... Good for rehersals though...!
