Re: Playing MP3s through stereo

That depends on your resources. It's easy to connect the analogue output of a soundcard to your stereo, but the quality will never be perfect.

I have used old PC components to build a dedicated mp3 player that stands by my stereo. It has a soundcard with digital output connected to a hi-fi amplifier with digital input. It gives chrystal clear sound (which unfortunately reveals that mp3 encoding is not perfect, so I am now converting to FLAC). I don't know if it's the perfect solution, but it works great for me.

Until recently I used my TV as monitor (TV-out on graphics card connected through the VCR), but some voltage problems blew both the TV-out port and the s-video port on the VCR. Be careful. I would recommend to use some kind of wireless connection for both sound and monitor if you use the setup I have described.

: Anybody know the best way to play MP3s on my PC through my stereo directly, ie. not burning them and playing as a cd?

Re: Playing MP3s through stereo

Try Lola. here is a link to the site:

Crane also has a wireless audio transfer. Here is link:

Hope that helps.

Don't know the name of this band

Some of tsong's lyrics go something like this..
"90 miles outside Chicago..."
and then "did the Captain of the Titanic Cry?"
Does anyone recognize this?

software for a music shop

To whom it may concern

I am a student at University of Canberra. For my computer class assignment I need to know what kinds of software package do I need to run a music shop. The shop will only sells cds .

I would really appreciate if you could give me any information as it will help me make my assignment successful.

Thank you
Shirleen

Re: software for a music shop

I'm not quite sure if there are s/w packages designed specifically for Record shops or not.
You would need to contact record stores to find out.

But essentially any Database s/w would do this for you.
You could design a database in Microsoft Access for example...

The only tricky part of it is if you are trying to impliment the Barcoding side of it.

I'd say it was...

Re: #2367

Hello there

We don't sell sheet music upgrades, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what you mean. Do you mean a sheet music title or software? What have you exactly ordered?

Please email me and I'll see what I can do for you.

Warm regards

Lessons Instruction for Remixing??? Los Angeles

Hello!

I'm looking for a resource where I can get some instruction remixing music. Specifically if someone has experience using Mixman Studio Pro with Recyle so that I can remix my own music that would be ideally what i'm looking for.

I'm located in Hollywood, California. I would be willing to pay $$$ perhaps to sit down for a day and go through these programs and learn. I'm fairly computer savvy so probably a quick learner, but it's a real pain learning these programs from scratch on your own.

If you are interesting in being a teacher for a few hours again I'd be willing to pay you a fee (and buy lunch!!) - or if you could point me in the right direction as a good learning resource for this stuff that then please contact me!

Thanks for your help!

Re: Lessons Instruction for Remixing??? Los Angeles

well, i can just give you some knowlege on what i been doing.. i use soundforge 6 and traktor dj studio for my mixes.. i don't really like mixman.. i think its more involed than just learning a program. if you search on the net you can find out a lot of information.. i've been doing it for two years and i still don't know jack shit about it.. i made a coulple of really good mixes in my opion but when i show dj's they critisize the shit out of it.. if you really want to do it you should look for a school.. i'm about to goto a school for it.. depends on how deep you want to get with it.. for basic shit.. just download acapellas, instrumentals and go crazy with them.. using soulseek will help a lot with the downloading of underground shit.. don't know what else to say.. keep mixing.. peace..

How bad was that?

Dunno how bad moserok's mixes are. Sounds like he's really oversensitive about how other think about his songs. Everybody has their own taste including DJs, jus becos some don't like your tracks ain't mean it's actually bad. 1 DJ mocked a certain track i did and i really got down on it, then i decided to give it a go on the scene, and it had numerous good reviews from others. Schools teach everything, much of what you might not want to learn. It may be that after going to a school, u'll end up complaining u already know what they'll teaching. Find the net for info as much as possible before deciding your next moves.
The process of remixing isn't hard, jus downloading samples and putting them together. What's the main issue is how to fit them together well? That involves musicianship and producer abilities. Some DJ knowledge would be good.

Visible keyboard whilst playing midi files?

Hi,

Whilst playing solo piano midi files, is it possible to have a screen display of a piano keyboard showing which notes are being played? - possibly 'lighting' the keys in accordance with the midi info. The piano roll view which I have come across in the past is difficult to follow.

Cheers

Kevin G

Re: Visible keyboard whilst playing midi files?

a lot of VST instruments have a piano view of the notes they are playing....

Download demos of any of these...

Synapse - Scorpion or Junaglist.
Native Instruments - B4 / Pro52 etc etc

... I'm not aware of any programs that just display the notes as such

trying to install reason.

Hi i just downloaded reason for the mac and when i click on install it says that installation requires a system folder in the destination drive. i have no idea what that means, so if you could help me out I would be very helpful. Thank you in advance for helping me with this situation.

Recording

Please send instructions on how to record analog cassette 4 track onto the computer in digitla format.

Re: Recording - It is easy to do

You can play the cassette player and record it. For recording you can use this inexpensive software FlexiMusic Wave Editor from www.fleximusic.com.

Note:
1) Connect the "audio out" of cassette player to "audio in"
of the sound card (behind the PC) using a stereo audio cable.
2) In the recording source - choose the line in. You can use the button in
Recording box of FlexiMusic Wave Editor for this

Software won't recognise CDA format

Hi,
I have Sound Forge 4.5 at the moment. While trying to record something for editing later today, I discovered that it won't recognise CDA format at all. The CD I was trying to record something from had all the tracks listed as CDA (don't ask me why) and Sound Forge just said "Nope, don't recognise it, can't open or record it" Any ideas/reasons etc?
Thankyou,

Paul

Re: Software won't recognise CDA format

What you are seeing is normal for an audio CD viewed with explorer (CDA).

In order to edit or manipulate a CD track, you must rip it from the CD to a format compatible with your audio software (eg wav, mp3).

There are many applications, both free and expensive that will do the job for you.

I like CDex (freeware). Get it here: http://www.cdex.n3.net/

:)

Re: Software won't recognise CDA format

The CDA file isn't an audio file, it's a shortcut telling the CD player where the track is on the CD.

Making stereo drums from a mono track

Does anybody know a software that can create a stereo wave file from a mono wave file containing a drums track by finding out the frequencies etc. of the different drums and panning them to the left and to the right? The result should be, for example, a stereo drum track with the snare in the centre, the cymbals panned to the left, the toms to the right etc.
Thank you for helping me!

Re: Making stereo drums from TWO mono tracks

It's time-consuming, but you can do it if you have a MIDi to WAVE conversion program (e.g., Polderbits -- $30!)) and a multitrack program that will synch the resulting .WAV files (e.g., Cakewalk).

Using your notation program's default mode (e.g., CWK for Cakewalk), write your drum tracks with one track per staff. Save your pattern as two sets, one for the left and one for the right.

Use dynamics to shift field position. If you want the low tom to play hard right, assign a pianissimo (ppp)dynamic to its respective staff in the "left" set and a mezzoforte (mf) in the right.

When all the drum "positions" are assigned to your tastes, convert each set to a .WAV file and synch them in your multitrack program.

Re: Making stereo drums from a mono track

Hi. Well, yes, it is really easy to make stereo drums from a mono track, but you can't seperate the individial drum pieces. What you do to make mono signal a stereo one is to duplicate the track and then shift it with a slight delay, then you can pan the two tracks opposite eachother and you end up with a stereo mix. I do this alot because I love recording in mono. Stereo for vocals just sounds like crap especially if you are rendering the track to a lower bandwidth than what CD's use professionally. Happy motoring, and good luck. -Pram Maven

Re: Making stereo drums from a mono track

Audio is much more complicated than that. You can eq the two channels different, but the result is not going to be the cymbal on the right, toms on the left. Even if you take a mono file of a piano, and pan the bass to the left, and the treble to the right it will not sound like a stereo miced piano. When the fundamental of a note is say 440Hz (A) there are over, and under tones that extend throughout the audible spectrum (from 20 to 20k Hz) and beyond. so when you pan a band at 440 to the left, the other components of that note are still in the center, so it doesn't sound "correct"

With drums there almost no fundamental frequency (some people tune cymbals to C#, but that is pretty vague) and snares are pretty much white noise across the spectrum.

Re: Making stereo drums from a mono track

Ok, Mr. Technocrat... I was only telling the guy how to make a stereo track out of a mono one. I didn't get the whole gist of what he was trying to accomplish but I thought I did a well enough job and I really didnt' expect to get lambasted for my opinion. You can make a science out of it all you want, but I still call it making music. Which is something too many people aren't doing, opting instead for a product that sounds good, but is full of empty sentiment. Lalala. You'll mix a good R&B crossover someday, producer, sir. I however, am going to be a MUSICIAN.

I know you cant remove backing music... but..

If I had a Full version of a song, then i had an instrumental version... could i use Cooledit to compare those 2 versions and kind of "subtract" the instrumental version from the full version? You know what i mean..

Re: I know you cant remove backing music... but..

Only if they are exactly the same tracks. I mean exactly (with the exeption of the vocals beeing removed). If they used even an analog multitrack, or tweaked the eq a little the tracks are not going to "subtract"

WHICH SOFTWARE'S BEST??!

MY EMAIL ADDRESS - OBLONGMONKEY@HOTMAIL.COM

I have been given Cubase, then Reason, then Logic then Nuendo to 'get me started ' on music making. I found these difficult to get my head around.

Basically what I want is advice on what is the simplest package that acts like a four track but with multiple tracks but only uses samples already contained within the package. I don't think I have a sufficient soundcard for recording noise from a mic (vocals, acoustic guitar etc) so am happy to leave these out. It's just for getting a track down as a guide for a band.

I would also prefer to input the notes by a virtual keyboard on the screen.

It's only to write songs - not for finished production so simplicity is priority over good sound and masses of production equipment.

Any ideas?
