The only way you can "compress" WAV files is to reduce the sample rate from 44kHz or convert it to mono. Either way, the quality suffers.

TO convert MP3s to WAV format, try CDex (www.cdex.n3.net). It will handle both MP3 to WAV and WAV to MP3.

I'm looking for a recommendation for cataloging software for my CD collection. Most of it is jazz and I'm looking for software that will let me enter stuff like who the sidemen were on a track, when the date was recorded, location, etc. I want the database to let me search by each of these fields. So if I want to find every track in my collection where Sweets Edison played trumpet or Philly Joe Jones played drums, I want to be able to enter their name in a search and get a list.

If the software interfaces with an internet site where some of the CD data can be automatically imported, so much the better. But my first priority is capturing the details into a database that goes beyond simply a key to the lead artist on the gig.

I'm a bit of a geezer to be interested in learning this. I'm in print, a book designer and layout artist. I'm trying to transition to web design. I'd like to include the dimension of sound, of music.

I work on a 300 MHz G3 PowerMac desktop machine running OS 9.2 and a 400 MHz G3 PowerBook running 9.2. Not fast machines. I'd love a dual processor G4. But I don't have a pot to piss in. So inexpensive all the way around is what I'm hoping for help with.

I no longer do well at learning in the abstract and theoretically. Real world tutorials and projects--something similar to what Adobe offers with its Classroom in a Book series for Photoshop, Illustrator, and all the rest..

I very much want to learn to take a song, plus 20 covers of that song, and sample seconds-long consecutive bits of the different versions. Then I want to join the consecutive pieces into a single version of the song by all these different artists.

What shareware or freeware or binaries-available software does anyone recommend?

ok,i save tracks as standard MIDI file in Korg onto floppy disc.then i open it and import to fruity loops.i can see track 1 and track 2 just as on korg.when i play it,thereis no sound.how come?i am fucking lost.and when i set the midi channels,there are different sounds,bothkorg and fruit.what is that stupid midi cable for!when i play synthesizer i just can not get those soundz into fruity loops,it just control fruits patterns.only one note.that sucks.and how the fuck those data dumps do not work?i have spent 2 days with these problems and i am hopeless.it is just ruining my life.please help.uff.i am gonna finish that orbital alike track..well without those beautiful sounds from korg.

Consistent Volume throughout CD--is there a way?

When burning a multi-track CD, is there a way to assure that the volume will be somewhat consistent throughout the entire CD? I've been editting each selection within Nero, and they're not too bad, but would be grateful to find a application or method of doing this that's less time-consuming.

Please insert an empty medium to write to
Medium Required for the Compilation: CD-R/RW
Medium Type in the Recorder: (Empty)"

The 'Medium'(cd) is THERE, of course. It's just not being recognized. Did I just get 3 'lemons' out of 6, or do you think the fault is with my burner or Nero?

I was getting the same message over and over and then I noticed in the settings for the compilation that Multisession was selected instead of "No Multisession"

Nero was looking for a CD-RW and I was putting a CD-R in the drive.

I rebuilt the compilation using no mulitisession and finalize cd and it worked fine.

The same story here - Let me know if you get any news .

A regular CDR will work. Do not use RW's cause most CD+G players cannot read a rewritable disk.

I would like to get started with music on my Macintosh.
What I would like to do is not dissimilar to what a DJ does as part of their practice.
I want to take tracks that I like and have on CD and use my computer to mix them together into one big WAV to burn off to a disc. I don't need to do fancy DJ crossfader tricks or use four decks or anything fancy at all. I just need to do a little beat matching, synchronization, and mixing.
The problem is that I don't know what software will do this for me effectively. I've taken a look at a few demos (REASON, MegaSeg...) and didn't think I was finding what I was looking for.
Could someone please help me out, locating some software they've used for similar things. What I'm looking for is something that runs well (read fairly fast ) and preferrably in OS X, though this is not a requirement.

beat matching is much more complicated than "fancy DJ crossfader tricks" but you should be able to find something you like in the multi-track section of this site, or the DJ section.

Skill is the main point, but tube amps do have a distinct sound. There are tube-sims that are cheeper, but you get what you pay for.

Just make sure that the frequency response of the new speakers reaches the cutoff of the crossover, or you'll end up with a drop-off in frequency response.

Replacing single speakers in multi-way units isn't just a matter of finding something the same size - they can sound terrible if not matched properly. The only sure way is to find out the manufacturer of the originals and replace them with the same type. This way, they'll integrate properly.
