Using Roland VS-840 Files on a PC ??

Posted by Frederik on Sat, 11/02/02 - 00:19:46.

I would really like to know how to convert, use, and ultimately listen to the files that were recorded on a Roland VS-840 Digital Studio Workstation (the thing was sold and now I want to listen to what was recorded on the zip drive, with .VS1 and .VR8 files format). If anyone knows anything about that Roland product that might be helpful or if you know that kind of files I would really appreciate your help. Thank a lot

I hope it will help you!

I sure wish I had your e-mail cause I'm going through the exact same ehausting problem and would love to know if you got anywhere. I still have my Roland 840 -- and about 50 songs on 50 zip drives. I bought dell 8250 computer and paid $100 extra for a zip drive, cause the asshole sales person said it wouold be no problem to download the zip drive onto my cd burner. WISHFUL THINKING> I've been on tech support with ROland and Dell all day and so one seems to know how to do it and many say it just can't be done. that's because they were recorded on the .VS1 system, which is incompatable with the DEll. in fact, I can't find anything other than the 840 that VS1 is coimpatable with. Somepeople talk of somehow converting the zip discs to WAV anbd then doiwn loading it that way,,,, but hey,.,,, im a mususucan, not a pomputer wiz. i'm afraid those songs will be lost for ever. unless i buy some expenseive recording software and create my 8 track digitql recording station out of my computer and burn the music on to CD or a har d drive. There lots of brands. but the really good ones, for really good sound. costs upwards of $,100 a big chunk when you;ve just shellled out $1600 for a computer. iF YOU HAPEN TO SEE THIS MESSAGE AGAIN SOMEHOWQ FOUND THE ASNWER -- OR FOUND THAT IT COUND'T BE DONE. PLEASE LET ME KNOW. i'M AT LANEINFLA @YAHOO.COM

I'LL DO THE SAME. i DON'T GIVE UP EASILY. THANKS, gARY.

Re: Using Roland VS-840 Files on a PC ??

To my knowledge, you can't just slip the zip into a PC and expect magic to happen. You have to patch your vs-840, either analog or digitally, to a digital or analog card seperately bought for your PC, which costs around $75- $150. Using this patch/card, which you plug the vs-840 physically into, turns your formatted zip into a wave file. Next, you can download different rippers or converters to change the wave file to mp3, or what ever you like, for free via the internet. Also seperate editing software can be purchase to edit you newly constructed wave or mp3.
