Re: Any MIDI experts out there? I need more instuments!
If you want more instruments, you can download sound fonts as an alternative if you have a sound card that will let you use them. SoundBlaster Live cards do as do others but I don't know which ones do and don't.
I haven't figured out how to use soundfonts yet, but supposedly they can be pretty cool.
As for n-tracks, you may need to make sure midi is selected for recording instead of line in or microphone.
Go to view -> soundcard mixer-> and recording controls and then make sure the right options are selected.
You may need to go to the options menu to get the right preferences to show.
Hope you figure it out

no expert but -
your soundcard is one place you will obtain midi sounds from. If they are no good then try an emulated card such as Yamaha's SY-XG50. These soft cards have high latency though. You should try a midi capable sequencer too. Data Beckers Music Centre Pro has excellent XG midi manipulation options.

I want to convert vinyl to mp3 or aiff, on a macintosh computer.
Is there a software for this ? I found LP RECORDER on mp3.com,
but the download is formatted in some format my browser or my

Anyhow, the manufacturer provides no contact, so I can't ask there.
aNY SUGGESTIONS ARE much APPRECIATED.

Re: convert vinyl to mp3 or aiff
You need an audio editor to start with.
Here's a well-regarded freeware editor - sonicWORX
Cheers

Soon after using the right click mp3 problems began occuring with my EZ CD creator program. It no longer recognizes mp3s on my computer even though I have many. I can no longer create cds from mp3s from any source. Please email me back with any tips or ways to fix this problem.
concatonating (joining) wav files?
How do I join wav files. Is there even a way? Can you please give me a program? Thanks -Matt-
concatonating with a audio editor!
Yes Matt what you want is an 'audio editor'. Have a look round www.sonicspot.com - 'Sampled' is an excellent freeware example.

Classical composition
Is there a software package (compatible with Windows 98), that allows me to compose music for an orchestra, to hear my composition, to edit it, save it and print it out? If so, which is the best package and is it difficult use? And most important, how does the playback sound?
Sibelius
Yes the most higly regarded I believe is Sibelius. It's expensive (£599UK) but not too hard to get to grips with I wouldn't think. There are much cheaper alternatives such as MAGIX Notation (£19) and PrintMusic! Finale (£59). You can try the demos to see what you are getting before you buy - check this site's software section or www.sonicspot.com for a great database with reviews.
The sound quality is determined entirely by the abilities of your soundcard! Midi will be the format used I'd think so the program will send the info you input to the soundcard for processing. Most soundcards have built-in midi soundsets but you can also use a software soundcard like Yamaha's SY-XG50/100. You can buy and install a new soundcard on many PC's and if so on you own then Creative Labs cards are a standard and well priced. Yamaha's SW1000XG (£499) card has 1,200 voices (different instrument sounds) and is of very high quality.

Re: Sibelius
I have used a succession of Finale versions. If you are a teacher or church musician, they have what they call an educational version which is fully functional (I'm not sure what it is that you don't get by not purchasing their retail version . . . but, from my experience, I'm guessing that you don't get poorer). My first version (I don't remember the version number), got me registered as a Coda user, and I've purchased upgrades as the spirit moved me. For me, it's a great package . . . accepts input from any midi source (I use a keyboard), in the US it seems to be the electronic notational standard, allows for real time or note by note input, and will definitely allow you unlimited flexibility for entering and notating your scores.
Good luck.

converting cd audio signal to midi files
I'm wondering if it is possible to take a recording of cd audio music (a piano demo) and convert it to a midi file so it can be worked with and manipulated. Is there anyone who can help me with this?

beginner
I am a beginner in music on PC. I have little time to sing, but like to sing in the car.I am looking for software to type notes on the screen, save them and be able to play them. Also working with cords would be lovely
singing in the car
Yes Hannah, singing in the car is all very well so long as you are being attentive to the ever changing traffic situation? And as for entering notes and chords on a PC while driving I think that is highly irresponsible. Unless you don't intend to do this WHILE driving???
OK well what you could do with is an audio/midi sequencer. You need a soundcard on your PC obviously for this to work. With a sequencer you can use your sonudcards midi soundbank and enter notes on an edit grid in the sequencer for playback. Chords are no problem you simply insert three notes on a tracks edit grid and stretch them to the desired play length. Have a look round www.sonicspot.com for demo downloads of sequencers. Try a few and see which one you like. A real jem is Data Beckers Music Centre Pro which has excellent midi editing features. Many computer magazines also give away full working copies of midi sequencers (on their cover CDs) such as Micro Logic Fun which is also a nice little program

I WANT A PROGRAM THAT COULD DO.............
Right.....
I have asked this in chat rooms for ages, with no answer... so could you people help me...
I am after a program where-by i add an effect to a vocal part of a song.. the effect i am after is distortion, like on "cher-believe" amoung others. am i would like to get this vocal part and mix it into a bacround beat...
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: I WANT A PROGRAM THAT COULD DO.............
What you need is an Antares Auto Tune. Thats what they used on the Cher record. It cost 700.00.
Gary
Gary Carter from Faith Hill MP3.com
Re: I WANT A PROGRAM THAT COULD DO.............
from what I heard it was done using a digitech
talker. It did the modulation onto a wardoff wave.
You can do something similar with a vocoder
program, like opcode's vocode . or go to analogx.
com , he has one for free. as far as the auto tune the synth did the pitch shift and blending
from dry to wet did the fade in and out.
will
As far as I can figure...
Cher's vocal was recorded through a pitch correction effect like the Antares Auto Tune. The auto tune would have been cheated from it's regular role of subtle pitch correction, and duped into adjusting her vocal in real time to the exact note that it thought she should be singing.
In practise, these means turning up the speed at which the program changes her voice from one note to the next. So instead of her 'sloping' from one note to the other, the auto tune made her voice - - leap - directly from one note to the next with no 'sloping'. Listen to the record and the notes she sings when the effect is evident, and you will get my drift.
There are hardware versions but the VST pluggin, Antares Auto tune, could do the job.
I think your distortion reference may be misguided although let me know if you think i've confused you at all...!
Regards

Re: As far as I can figure...
WHERE DO I GET Antares Auto tune???????
You have to buy it. I think it might be expensive...
Try your local music Shop. I can't help you any further.... sorry...

Do u belieeeve in life aieeefter love???
Yes hello again Cher fan!
You mean you want to put Cher's voice over your own beats? Well u cannot extract a vocal line from a mixed song! All u can try is EQing out the bass and high end and boost the vocal range.
If u want to create your own original track with a Cher type vocal you need to use the Vocoder you were told about. You simply apply it to the vocal track only - in an audio/midi sequencer in which your entire song is recorded OK? Look around www.sonicspot.com for everything you need and ask again if not clear OK?

what's a simulator?
What do you want to do? plug the guitar into the computer or play a synth with the guitar?
Steve..R
Do u mean midi simulated guitar vrs REAL THING???
If this what u mean then yes u can create some effective guitar sounds with a good soundcard and Yamaha's XG Edit - might get some demos from Yamaha site. However your talking about programming vrs hands on and I'd say if u can play the thing then why do otherwise? Simply plug the output from an amp into your soundcards line/mic in! You can apply effects inside a sequencer and do diff takes/change things much quicker than programming. You also get more authentic sounds while still being able to pretend you're in Bon Jovi!!! :)
If u no sequencer then try the demos from www.sonicspot.com - Cakewalk Pro Audio might be a good one for guiter based recording - Data Beckers Music Centre Pro is an excellent, cheap sequencer.

looking for software
I am looking for software to assist me in composing piano music. I had 12 years piano lessons, but basically no theory, so I don't know what it is that I need. Thanks
This won awards...
although I don't know it well, i've tried the Mac demo. I think it's aimed at beginners and intermediates so it may suit you. It's cheap as well so you can't go wrong really. Check out some reviews, I did and it sounds good..
