Multi-track recording on Mac with audio editing
Where can I find a freeware or shareware multitrack recording program for an i-Mac that has audio editing capabilities? I only need to record 2 tracks to a mono mix, but I need to be able to cut and move one of the tracks. I don't have a very powerful machine, so ProTools is out. Thanks!

Cheap way to record decent audio onto a laptop?
I've got a VAIO with an absolutely crap microphone jack and was wondering if there were any reasonably priced USB/FireWire/PCMCIA audio input devices out there...my local guitar shop people are totally clueless on this. Thanks, DL

I've just got a Roland UA-30 USB interface (£165 in UK), which works really well: clean and quiet with mic/guitar input, analogue line in/out and digital SPDIF/Optical in and outs. There's also an ASIO driver about to be released from www.usb-audio.com
Good luck,Ben
How to use external effects with Cakewalk or Pro Tools?
I recently setup my PC to multi-track. I am using a Berrhinger 8 channel mixer, a DMAN PCI soundcard and Cakewalk. I would like to be able to use an external effects processor on one channel of my Cakewalk recording. Is this possible? If not, any suggestions on the best way to get good PC based plug-in effects? Thanks in advance.
Re: How to use external effects with Cakewalk or Pro Tools?-It's
I have never used ProTools on a PC, although I heard there's a PC version for Digi001. ¿Do you have it? In ProTools for Mac you can create a an external send, on the Mixing window and use an output from your card as the "aux send output" for your external Fx, and then return it to an additional (s) track (s) you create and get them in record (selecting the audio inputs you are using for your Fx return).
But I actually don't get how can you use ProTools without having a Digidesign audio interface. Can you?
Good luck,
Alex

I have been downloading mp3's, and burning cd's from napster. I keep getting "skips" etc on my music. I was wondering if it has something to do with modem speed durring the download (56k), or my browser (aol), or just a random act of god?

anybody storing audio on firewire drives?
I have a mav g4, and a mac g3 powerbook, both use fire wire. I was wondering if there are people out there who have been using firewire drives, to store/back up audio, that can give me some spec advice, brand, etc....
thanks josh.
Listen up...
I have been looking for a new drive for my G4 and have looked closely at the Firewire offerings. The problem at the moment is that nobody has made a fully firewire drive. The present ones are firewire controllers addressing an IDE drive. Although it has the USB style hot pluggability, it doesn't offer you the full bandwidth of the firewire standard.
I have just squeezed 48 tracks of audio out of my G4/400 256megs Ram using the internal drive so, although the firewire thing isn't up to speed, you should be expecting a better performance than the already fast internal drive using a decent firewire drive. Get one and i'll be jealous but you have been warned... you may be better to sit and wait, if not, then enjoy the speed and flexibility.

note, too, when I play a note of an instrument. I want

toast 4.0
hi,
I've bought me a new cd recorder
And it only works with Toaster 4.0 (mac)
I've heard this new version doesn't allow you to record audio.
What do you know about it?
I'm really worried, cause i Think i've spend my money for nothing and there's nothing i can do...
thanks for any possible answer clearyfying this matter
Sylvia
Re: toast 4.0
Hi,
Toast is an excellent program, and the Macintosh chosen standard for recording CD's. It covers many different formats and allows
you to record a CD with Audio files and Data files simultaneously so that the audio files will play in a CD player and the data tracks
are available to your computer.
Adaptec's Jam will record either Aiff's/Wav's or Mp3s to a CD for playing in any CD player as audio. I don't know if version 4 of
Toast allows you to burn direct from Mp3's but it more than likely does. It DEFINITELY allows you to make audio CD's. Keep it,
it's excellent.

voice remove
is there aprogram that can remove voice from any music?
sincerely
guy.
yes - a common question!
You can apply 'AnalogX Vocal Remover' to a stereo mix which will have varied results. The program is a 'DirectX plugin' so is applied to a song via the effects facility of an audio sequencer - check out www.sonicspot.com for all u need.

tehe - a sonicspot employee!
Hey if I worked for them I'd be there updating rather than helpfully answering questions here!
This is the deal. This site is as confusing as hell and until it is sorted out it's my duty to send people where they'll get what they need with no hassle. Novices come here for HELP and GUIDANCE so I'm not gonna send them to the home page/software page of this site which has HUNDREDS of entries on single lists! Many people want freeware - have u looked at the freeware page of this site?! It's APPALING and CONFUSING - if I came across it when I was a beginner I'd have given up! Sonicspot's listings are clear and concise everything this site is not. MOST VISITORS THINK THIS SITE IS JUST A MESSAGE BOARD!! They arrive here from a search engine nodoubt as I did bypassing the home page - it took me weeks to find the software pages and I'm not stupid.

Informations
Dear Mr,
I'd like toknow what kind of music software to you advice me to produce classic music.
Thank you for all.

Notation software
Hello Joao!
What you need is a 'notation sequencer' which allows you to input notes on a staff for various instruments to create a complete piece. Have a look at the 'Notation' section of www.sonicspot.com for some examples of such programs. Sibelius is the very best but also very expensive! You know ofcourse that the sounds you will hear are generated by your soundcard not the program itself? So the better the soundcard the more realistic will you piece sound. If u have a poor soundcard u can use a 'software card' such as Yamaha's SY-XG50 which will create realistic instrument sounds for you.

m3u
How do I go about converting an m3u file into a wav file so I can burn a cd??
Re: m3u
: How do I go about converting an m3u file into a wav file so I can burn a cd??
M3U (.m3u) is the file extension for a playlist of MP3 audio files used by many media players, including Winamp. Like the RAM (.ram) file extension. M3U files only contain the information leading to the actual location (local directory or remote/hyperlink) of the audio file; a .mp3 file.
A M3U file is simply a text file and can be opened in NotePad or a similar text editor allowing you to see the local or remote location of the actual audio file. Example:
Local directory (a MP3 file on your computer) - C:\temp\mysong.mp3, or Remote directory/Hyperlink (a MP3 file on the Internet) - http://www.mp3.com/mysong.mp3
When used on the Internet, the M3U file extension allows streaming of a MP3 audio file. By finding the hyperlink location of the MP3 file within the M3U file you can download the actual audio file from the Internet.
Re: m3u
Help. I downloaded my files from napster and saved them as m3u, which is what you are offered when saving. I then added these music files to my website. I can hear them fine at home, but at work I cannot get sound from the site. Will I need to change all my files or what. Please help

m3u to wav.
: How do I go about converting an m3u file into a wav file so I can burn a cd??
Re: m3u to wav / napster ***** read here ****** read here *****
1st, it appears m3u format cannot be converted into mp3 files. If it can be done, no one knows how to. What you must do first is get a
media player before you can start downloading in mp3 format, more than likely you do not have one thus go to www.winamp.com and
download this software, it's free. Once you have this software, downloading from Napster will save in mp3 format. Those files will be
found under your c drive follow these steps. my computer/c drive/program files/napster/music. if you don't see this set up find your mp3
files deep in your c drive.
Once you have downloaded music from Napster lets say, and you see that it is saved in mp3 format, your next step is to get an mp3
converter. Go to www.mp3towav.com this one is also free. Before you can burning music on cd's, they must be .wav files and this
software converts them in to .wav files. Once you music saved in .wav format, you are now ready to burn your cd's!!
remember to erase your .wav files, only keep .mp3 files since .wav files will take up a lot of space on your hardrive.

**************if you are still having problems after following the stated instructions above, do this::::*******************
: ok, I went to the winamp site and got the software, but my files from napster still save as m3u files?? why? is there something I did
wrong? help here??????????????????????
It appears you are downloading them correctly, so check and make sure your files are about 1meg per minute. if they are, use msDOS
prompt (in the start menu) and go to your drawer with the supposed m3u files and rename them what ever you want, just make sure you
put .mp3 at the very end of the file. you can also do this manually through win95 - ME by ensuring that you open my computer, press the
"alt" key, then the "v" key, then the letter "o" key, go to the view tab, and ensure that "Hide file extensions for known file types" is
UNCHECKED, and then proceed to your m3u file containing folder, and right click, rename, and change the files from "whatever.m3u" to
"whatever.mp3" after doing this, open the files with winamp, and follow the other guy's instructions. remember, this only works if the the
files are about 1 meg per minute, more or less. if they are 15K or something like that, you downloaded a playlist, not audio. Good luck,
