Have you never heard of opening a file with notepad no matter what the format of the file is? Do you need instructions on how to use the thing between your keyboard and your seat? Look around, otherwise sell your computer and stop bothering people. Want to send me hate mail? Go right ahead.

1st, it appears m3u format cannot be converted into mp3 files. If it can be done, no one knows how to. What you must do first is get a
media player before you can start downloading in mp3 format, more than likely you do not have one thus go to www.winamp.com and
download this software, it's free. Once you have this software, downloading from Napster will save in mp3 format. Those files will be
found under your c drive follow these steps. my computer/c drive/program files/napster/music. if you don't see this set up find your mp3
files deep in your c drive.
Once you have downloaded music from Napster lets say, and you see that it is saved in mp3 format, your next step is to get an mp3
converter. Go to www.mp3towav.com this one is also free. Before you can burning music on cd's, they must be .wav files and this
software converts them in to .wav files. Once you music saved in .wav format, you are now ready to burn your cd's!!
remember to erase your .wav files, only keep .mp3 files since .wav files will take up a lot of space on your hardrive.

It appears you are downloading them correctly, so check and make sure your files are about 1meg per minute. if they are, use msDOS
prompt (in the start menu) and go to your drawer with the supposed m3u files and rename them what ever you want, just make sure you
put .mp3 at the very end of the file. you can also do this manually through win95 - ME by ensuring that you open my computer, press the
"alt" key, then the "v" key, then the letter "o" key, go to the view tab, and ensure that "Hide file extensions for known file types" is
UNCHECKED, and then proceed to your m3u file containing folder, and right click, rename, and change the files from "whatever.m3u" to
"whatever.mp3" after doing this, open the files with winamp, and follow the other guy's instructions. remember, this only works if the the
files are about 1 meg per minute, more or less. if they are 15K or something like that, you downloaded a playlist, not audio. Good luck,

From what i can gather you mean a m3u playlist. You can simply use the wav output on winamp. Just run the m3u playlist with the output set to discwriting. If you want to make a mix cd (where the tracks are mixed together at the end/start then theres a plugin for winamp that does it)

I am facing some problems regarding speed while recording.
I am recording track of a song from
1)CD drive of Pc - voice of singer was recorded from Audio system
2) Music track dumpoed from Audio to PC & voice from same Audio
Both the cases there is a mismatch in speed

what's a good sequencer?
hey there,
anyone have any input on a good sequencer and preferably a free one.
I tried Alien Disko systems, but I can't make any music/sound come out of it.
Any tips are appreciated.

I assume you mean step sequencer.
For step sequencing, try the Rebirth demo at www.propellerheads.se
or the step sequencer that comes in the Techno Toys package on this site.

However, If you check the back issue dept. of Computer Music magazine you may still be able to get the issue which carries a free version of Cubasis Audio sequencer. Evolution audio also do a decent free sequencer. If you have a limited budget Cakewalk do a very good range.

finding your wav>mp3 conversion!
Well Marcel the utility you use to convert your audio files will allow you to specify where you want the mp3s to be put. Have a look round the programs 'options'. If u cannot find the options then simply do a search - Start>Find>Files or Folders - for the name of the song and you will locate the folder where your coverted files are stored.

Hello Mike,
RealJukebox will burn to CD-R, automatically decoding MP3s to WAV first.
Also, read <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/news/493/">this article 'FAQ: MP3 to Audio CD'.
When burning CDs to be played on non-computer (stereo, car, etc.) systems, use only CD-R discs, not CD-RW.
Also, Click Here for <a href="http://www.mp3machine.com/win/DECODERS/">MP3 Decoders</a> (.mp3 to .wav conversion).

The only one I know...
... is the Macintosh Amp radio by subband systems. It's $10 and allows you to listen to hundreds of radio stations and record them (press the record button) into an MP3 or wave file onto your HD. You can even broadcast your own radio station easily. I don't know if it's cross platform but you could go check 'em out...

What's that,a copy challenge?
I have version 2.71 and i don't know how to use the Motu Midi Express with the Free Midi and Unity DS-1, Retro As-1,
so i have to work the midi stuff on the Digi001.
They say Midi on Performer is easier so , please be cool!!

downloading cubase vst
has anyone had trouble downloading vst? i have tried 4 times, but it's resetting my modem just before dowmload is complete. any advice in this would be much appreciated, as i'm new to the download world... thanks.

If you are using The Explorer even if the failure on your connection is on the 19 MB,(almost finishing) go to file open your Download mannager and double click on the name of whatever u r downloading , it will open a window, click on reload you'll get your 19 MB back
in about 2 or 3 minutes so u don't have to start all over again.

when i put a cd in the player and compress songs to my playlist, i usually end up with about 3500 to 4500kb.
When i download songs from napster they are only 80 to
100 bytes. How do you compress songs down that small?

I am wondering how some people manage to compress their MP3s into only 30-50 kb size? I have copied a piece of music from an internet site and it is 4 minutes long and only 45KB! But when i download songs from Napster they are 3500 - 4500KB in size and they take up a lot of room on the hard drive.

WAV files (that aren't on a CD) to MP3
Okay, I downloaded an MP3 Encoder, but it only changes CD tracks to MP3's, not regular old WAV files saved on my computer. How can I get my WAV files to convert into MP3s?

You need a program such as winamp. Winamp will encode the files both ways.

Okay, now it's totally confusing. You said you wanted to be able to put mp3s on a cd. Now you're saying it was the other way around. Did you download Winamp? The instructions for Winamp are at the following site www.musicgrap.com/audiocd.phtml
These instructions will step you through the process of turning mp3s into wavs.

A software for automatically flattening audio?
I have some music that's volume changes, in my opinnion, too much. I would like to flatten the music's volume (Automatic Gain Control). Do you know of any sofware, shareware or freeware, that does this? Rather freeware than shareware.
Limiting/Compression...
A Compressor/Limiter is a process in where you set the threshold, (the point of volume where the effect starts to take place, (over that volume)), and then a ratio (the information above the threshold which is effected BY the effect and reduces that information by a set ratio, (2:1 will reduce everything above the threshold by 2 parts to one)) and the attack (the amount of time it takes for the information above the threshold to start to take affect) and the release (the amount of time it takes for the effect to release it's given duties). Confused?? not surpised.
It's a simple, but essential process that is used massively and misunderstood in an equally massive way. All it does in practice is keep the volume from riding above a given level with some fancy controls on how it does it. If you compress an overall dynamically messy stereo mix of your own music, then you will more than likely be mysteriously suprised at how good your mixing actually is after applying the effect correctly.
Compression is the most basic dynamic Fx, and can be found everywhere from dedicated programs to be incorporated into computer based Multitrack recorders. Check out the file area on this board...
