i know nothing about this stuff

Okay, here's the deal: My boyfriend's birthday is in a week & one of the things he's been talking about is music composition software. He plays sings & plays acoustic guitar and wants to also do some stuff on his computer with it. I don't want to get something that is way too advanced for someone who hasn't used this sort of thing a lot, but I want him to be able to produce stuff he's proud of. So, I'm poor and have no idea what to look at or for--even if I did have a ton of cash. Aren't there free programs I can download too? Somebody please help me

Re: i know nothing about this stuff

How much money do you have? I know you want it for free but, it is a present after all... ;"-)

For a singer and guitarist, you would need a decent microphone. Decent enough studio mic's are a ton cheaper than they were even five years ago.

Minimum spec for me would be. An M-Audio Audiophile 2496 audio card (PCI slot required) which comes with some audio and midi (he might not use the midi) software. On top of this you would need a mic preamplifier which is something you can buy as a stand alone or comes in a mixing desk. Minimum for me would be the excellent M-Audio Audiobuddy. Minimum mic for me that can record acoustic guitar AND vocals would be something like the Studio Projects C-1 or the Rode Nt1.

Once you have looked at the price for the above three items, you may wince a little but for what is a budget setup, there is some potential for really good sound quality..

That's my view anyway..

Here's a <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Audacity/">free audio editor</a>, a <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/HammerHead_Rhythm_Station/">free drum machine</a> and a <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SonicFoundryAcid/">free sample sequencer</a> to make remixes.

I think you should leave the technical torture up to your boyfriend.
If you have enough money, i think you should buy him a good sound card if he
doesn't already have a good one. Make sure it's a PCI soundcard that comes with a CD-ROM for both Windows and MacOS. Make sure that it says it can record and playback at the same time (full duplex), and that it fully supports MIDI. Most importantly, look for one that has a "sampling rate" of at least 96kHz. The better soundcards will do 96kHz or higher. The worse ones will only do 44.1kHz or 48kHz. The higher the number, the better. Also, the bit resolution should be at least 24. The older ones only can do 16, but you want 24 or even 32 bit resolution. Soundcards of this type start out at around 150 dollars new. This isn't cheap for most of us, but it's actually something that will not go out of style so fast, and it's hardware that can be traded in at a pawn shop later on for an effect pedal or whatever. Whatever you do, don't buy a soundcard from a computer store or Best Buy. look online. If you go to a bookstore, ....

hey... wait a minute.... just get him a subscription to Electronic Musician magazine or EQ magazine or Mix. These you can find at a book store. Much cheaper than gear or software, but totally useful for months or years.

Re: magazine subscription

The people that run this site offer a monthly <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/membersonly/?headsmm">selection of software</a> on CD. It might also be useful for someone starting out. In any event, it's handy if you're using a 56.6 modem because it'd save time on downloading. A standard soundcard won't be as 'pro' as the higher quality soundcards, but if you're just starting out and aren't ready to make an investment, it does the job adequately. If you're a decent musician, it'll show. The worst muso in the world can't really be made much better with all the latest hi-tech gadgetry.

creative soundblaster pci128 software problem

Hello, I am experiencing some problems with this software. I have reinstalled it numerous times and it always states that it is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem.

Has anyone had this problem and what would be the remedy? I have windows ME.

Thank You.

Re: creative soundblaster pci128 software problem

Having upgraded from a 'standard' SB 16 to SB PCI 128, I now have limited sound on FS2002. All sounds were OK prior to the upgrade and I have re-installed FS2002 eight times thinking the fault was there. Please send me an email if you can help.

help me!serial numer for reason 2

[The body of this post has been lost]

serial thrilla

regardless of the serialz or crackz, you will need lots of RAM.
if you don't have patience to search online for the code, then running reason isn't likely to be fun for you either.
why don't you just focus on the free stuff. besides, propellerheads are pretty good about updating against cracks.

AudioFusion TWS

Even though lots of folks have said that Audiofusion doesn't work,
i recently reinstalled it and it works really well. At least the rhythm box part of it does.
what you do is open the rhythm box window, load up some sound files, sequence them, open the recorder window and record, and then export the results to AIFF from the menubar at the top of the screen.
i dont know about the mixer (sampler) or the instrument windows, but who cares. you can load up 10 stereo files per pattern and sequence them. You can also save different patterns.

it's actually quite a bit easier than Logic if all you want to do is sequence beats and instruments and loops in a mulitrack song.
each loaded sample has a volume and pitch control, which is totally smooth.
the rendering to AIFF seems a lot more stable than Logic, which seems to rely too much on MIDI sync, even with MIDI disabled.

The AudioFusion rhythmbox is a natural grid, so it's much easier than trying to line up and edit parts ProTools style. Anybody on a mac should take another crack at it. :)

Can anyone recommend a good Mixer ?

Hi All

Can anyone recommend a good mixing software package. I would like to be able to mix my MP3's and Wavs and burn my efforts to CD. Is there a good package out there for this purpose ?

Re: Can anyone recommend a good Mixer ?

ACID is also good. There's a <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SonicFoundryAcid/">free version</a>, but I believe you'd have to convert your MP3s to WAV. You could also look at the likes of DJ Table and djDecks which are in the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/RE-MIXING_DJ/">DJ/Remix section</a> of this site.

mixing mp3 & wave

using soundforge, u can paste-mix anything.
since soundforge can open and edit both mp3's and wave's, your ok.
what i used to do is use the marker key to tap the rhythm while the file played. after it was done, i'd have a handy BPM grid that matched the tempo of the song.
it's not perfect, but good enough to sound natural.
then, if i needed to replace a few loops, i'd already have markers for the loop start/end points.
if anything was slightly off, all i had to do was zoom in a little more to see the waveform and maybe move the marker to the start of the waveform attack. markers and regions are great in soundforge. with that and the paste-mix function window, you can create entire songs in the editor, and then just save the results as one big wave to burn.

Sound Font Drum Kits in Cakewalk

I'm running Cakewalk 9 on a Toshiba notebook, with a Creative Audio Extigy external sound unit. 'Sound fonts' is greyed out in Cakewalk and although the fonts load on music tracks, I can't ever hear a change in sound on midi track/channel 10. The font seems to load but the sound is always the same. Help!

Re: Sound Font Drum Kits in Cakewalk

I had the same problem so I switched over to SONAR and Project 5. You can use Project 5 to run unlimited soundfonts and Sonar to record the results and the best part is you can actually layer tons of FX modules onto the SOUNDFONT which can make almost any crappy font sound professional. Just thought i let you know. However the price top get these software is over 700 but free if you go to a friends house and *op* it.

Kazaa

Ok, my Kazaa isnt working. It just says connecting at the bottom, but won't connect. I have tried everything. I looked under the FAQ's and it said that I probably have a firewall, and i would need to open port 1214. Does anyone have any idea how I would go about doing that?? Can someone please help me?

Re: Kazaa

Kazaa doesn't give me any grief. XP Home, 2.4 gig Processor...

As much as people talk about how bad Kazaa is, if you have good antivirus and don't care about Spyware (OOOoo!! Are you scared??! I'm not.) then it's great. AdAware can neuter the Spyware for you anyway and it's an unbelieveable resource of Software and audio.

Kazaa is trouble, don't use it.

There are other services similar to Kazaa which let you keep your firewall.
Kazaa is bad news. It's just asking you do disable your security protections, which is a bad idea.
Also, the fact that it is telling you to set a certain port is also bad news. That should all be handled automatically.
Kazaa is making all of this fuss because it's designed
to install viruses and spyware and adware and trojans and bots on your system.
Sharing files is just a side effect. If you really want to download free files, you're gonna have to do more research on
which services are safer, which ones are dangerous (such as Kazaa), and other alternatives, such as USENET, FTP, Freenet, and advanced keyword searches for free software in a web search engine.
75 % of the programs i use i downloaded for free. i admit that i used some cracks for some of them too. i think cracks are a lesser evil. since allowing my computer to become infected by Kazaa (or whatever) would mean that my computer could be remote controlled to launch DDOS attacks against other sites without my knowledge or permission. At least cracks are relatively safe for the end user. Cracks are usually somewhat out of date, so they don't defeat the purpose of shareware. If you want a better version and technical support, you still have to pay for it and register. This is way better than wasting time fussing around with file sharing bullshit. Besides, even if you get it to work, you will become more vulnerable to attacks from all kinds of other softwares that exploit the vulnerabilities of Kazaa. The first thing you should try to learn is how to do better online searches for what you need and don't be afraid to try new things.

Re: Kazaa is trouble, don't use it.

You obviously like to suck very large cocks.
Kazaa loite is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Kazaa is trouble, don't use it.

You are a moron. Kazaa Lite is made for you fussy fucks and cracks arent out dated none of them are. People shouldn't pay 15-20 dollars for a fucking cd that has two good songs. Fuck software companies! Do you really feel sorry for Bill Gates as he laughs at you and wipes his rich ass with 100 dollar bills?

YOU NEED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SHIT BEFORE YOU TALK!!!

Re: Kazaa is trouble, don't use it.

Don't bother with Kazaar. I filled in all required details but the moment I clicked submit the page and my details vanished. I tried emailing someone called Sonia@kazaar.com without success. Either nothing gets throuth or all they are after is your payment deals. My advice is stay well cleat.

Re: Kazaa is trouble, don't use it. BOLLOCKS

I Run Zone Alarm With Kazaa no probs so dumb arse what u use xp Firewall??? Dunse

Re: how to exporting Logic songs ...give some help ..come on

Read the manual under 'Bounce' and it will all be obviously clear. Also, when you find out how to bounce the mix, you will be offered all the save options and file types including interleaving and seperated mono files for L + R

Please help. My soundblaster sounds funny

I've got a Soundblaster 16 PCI Legacy, apparently, but for the past year or so, when I'm using midi software or playing games with midi music the drumtracks don't sound like drums. It's more of a generic rubbishly-synthesised instrument playing different notes. I seem to remember the same problem on my old pc with a Soundblaster Pro and it was something to do with the channel that the percussion track played out of. Have I changed something and not known about it? Can I download anything to set it right. Noteworthy Composer tells me that my FM Midi Synth is not opening properly too. And should the sound card work with Roland MT-32 options too?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Music Shareware.com

A site that is lacking in brains to operate it and list demos that are worth downloading. Of the few Demos I downloaded from this site, all were pathetic in using. I think the site should be closed. If not for the lame content then for the Bombardment of Pop-up Ads. Last time I come to a Site by Shareware Music. Com. I've quite a few friends who are musicians and always looking for new programs for creating music on their PC's. I'll steer them clear of this pathetic site. Anyone who patronizes this site is equally as lame as the Creators.

I doubt...

...there is a complaints department for people like you. How much did you pay for this service out of interest? Nothing... huh? Bit rude complaining then don't you think? At least direct it to the right people rather than assuming we give a $&*&

Stompn FX GE 1

Obviously a piece of shit. I downloaded the Demo and got an Uninstall option and a Readme File. That's all. Nothing else. Zilch. No Effects processor. Morons obviously created the site it came from.

Re: Stompn FX GE 1

To be honest, that's not a bad little reproduction of a guitar pedal Eq... I'm sure you can find it elsewhere...?

Re: combining songs for a cheerleading squad

You'll need an audio editor and a program like ACID to begin with. ACID will let you paste together the pieces of songs you want to use in a relatively painless manner.

Re: combining songs for a cheerleading squad

Well, ACID Xpress will get you started. But you'll need to grab some music and convert it into WAV format. That's what an audio editor is for. Audacity is free but a little confusing for some. Sound Forge and Cool Edit 2000 are probably the best for people starting out.
