Generate music notes
I am not sure if my query falls into any of the categories already discussed, so please forgive me if I have been repetitive.
Someone asked me to find out if there is any available software which is able to generate music notes from mp3 or wav etc...
Re: Generate music notes
Search for "converting wave to midi". Midi can easily be read as notes by a number of programs including "Tabledit" Amazing is on such program.
The results are less than satisfactory and I feel it is because the programs should provide an adjustable time base.

How can I get my Computer to read DVDs
Hello, I have the problem of my computer to read DVDs. I have a Dell Windows XP and for some reason it won't read DVDs. I have a DVD Decoder but my computer doesn't read DVDs
Re: How can I get my Computer to read DVDs
Which model DVD drive does it have?
Have you tried one of the software decoders (PowerDVD, WinDVD etc.) to see if the problem is with the decoder rather than the drive.
Can you read the contents of the DVD using Windows Explorer?

Yes. But it's probably not what you have in mind.
Use a Recorder ! Record the sounds to a tape
recorder and then use either Windows Sound Recorder,
or GoldWave or CoolEdit ( the choice is yours )
and re-record them to your PC. Then you can manually edit the sounds. They begin as WAV files but then can be converted to MP3 using an MP3 converter like CDEX. Not too difficult if you Really want the sound files.

don't want single track on CD for my Dj mix, how to separate
I'm using Acid Pro 4.0 which is amazing but so far I haven't been able to find the way to separate the songs I mixed on the burned CD. My whole work comes out as a single track when I play it on a regular stereo system. Help please.
More useful techie crap
Well, the most common way is to isolate each song from the entire ACID multitrack session and make a copy of each. This will mean opening up the original huge long track, cutting it down to just the song you want, and then saving the results under a new name. Be sure to change the name so you don't erase your original long huge song. You will need the original in each case of songs you need to isolate.
If for some reason your RAM won't allow you to do this, or you just want another technique...
*Technique A* -- Use CDWAVE on a PC
Use CDWave to open up the big long file. create markers for song divisions.
save the results as new files. You can even omit certain parts.
*Technique B* -- Use any filesplitter on Mac or PC
1) render the whole big huge long multitrack session to one WAVE file.
2) convert this new WAVE file to raw audio format
Raw audio has no file type headers, so you can get away with now changing
the file extension from .RAW (or whatever your editors use) to .TXT
3) use a file-splitter program (usually operate only on .TXT files)
4) rename each chunk to be .RAW again
5) convert each chunk back from .RAW to .WAV
On the mac, this can be done with SoundApp, a file splitter, a file type changer, and applies to AIFF files instead of .WAV files. In this case, renaming is less important, but the type code is important instead. SoundApp considers any file of type "AudT" to be a raw audio file. SoundApp, can then convert or play it as an AIFF. If you need to manually set a corrupt AIFF or any file to be AIFF, use the "Fix16bit AIFF" program that comes with freeware DaxAIFF.
DaxAIFF is a lossless AIFF compressor/player. It isn't flawless, but it's useful. The "Fix16bitAIFF" program is only available with DaxAIFF, but can be used independently on any file with typecode "AIFF". You can use ResEdit, or DropAttribute, or Typer, or SetItsType!, or TypeCloner, or Typist, or Happy Typer to change the file type codes.

ciao, I have your cubase version and I had your problem at begin.
my computer is a AMD 900 with 128mg ram and sound blaster 128.
beyond a lot of experiment and prove (a lot of person told me that my computer wasn't the right solution to use cubase, in their opinion a should change the sound blaster, more ram ect.
so I, before waste a lot of money, tried to remove the rivers and reinstalled all the drivers of sound blaster.now i use my cubase without problem.
It is a wonderful program, is very complicated to use completely but little by little everyone can learn to use it.
I hope you will solve your cubase problem

Is there a stereo removing program?
So... If there a stereo removing program I think I could make some acapellas, but I can't FIND ANY!!!
SO, IF ANYONE KNOWS a program that gets rid of the stereo file,
CAN YOU PLEEEEEEEAAAAAAAASSSSSEEEE tell me?
I really want it.
or can anyone, actually make the program?
cuz I can't. hehe.
Re: Is there a stereo removing program?
If you want to remove the music and keep the vocals, you're out of luck.

Mid-Side (MS), Dual Mono, Linked Stereo, Joint Stereo, Biphonics
Yes, there is a stereo removing program. I believe it's in the mda plug-ins (VST plug-in freeware). I think it's the multiband compressor. There is a switch setting for compressing the monaural component or the fully stereophonic spatial component. Since you can set the levels of each part regardless of compression settings, you can in effect mute out either the stereo of mono part of a stereo track. Use the VST plug-in as channel effect, not as a aux send effect. There are other imaging plug ins that can also control this kind of stereo/mono thing. There's one really fancy one made by another company that's available as a trial VST, but I forget what it's called.
In general, any program that deals with MS configurations is dealing with this. MS stands for Mid/Side. This is translated as Mono/Stereo in the sense that you mean.
Mid/Side is maybe a better term for it.
Other similar processes are SRS surround simulation. SRS uses a center cancellation as part of the spatial effect. On some processors, the opposite extreme setting is stereo cancellation, leaving only the mono component.
In general, if you want to cancel out the stereo part, you would start by
adding the inverted versions of the left and right channels together to create a new mono track. Since this track is the inverted version of the mono part of the original stereo tracks, it can then be used to cancel it out. You do this by then adding the new inverted mono version to the original stereo tracks. Assuming that you kept the applitudes and headroom correct and without clipping, the result is the same song without the mono part.
As a rule, it is best to create extra headroom before mixing two normalized channels by first converting the original tracks to a higher bit resolution.
After you convert to a higher bit resolution, you can afford to reduce the amplitude by 50%. Remember, each bit of resolution represents a 6dB change in amplitude, which is equal to 50%. Every time you add 6dB, you are doubling the amplitude. Every time you subtract 6dB, you reduce by 50%. Each bit in a 16 bit file represents 6dB. Thus, a 16 bit file has 96 dB of amplitude. A 20 bit file has 120 dB of amplitude, and a 24 bit file has 144dB of amplitude. Therefore, adding two 16 bit files requires at least 17 bits to prevent clipping in the results. However, most software is designed to preserve the proportions of amplitudes between files of different bit resolutions, so you'll have to recreate the differences manually.
Thus, if you copy a normalized (100%) 16 bit waveform to a new 24 bit file, you'll need to reduce the amplitude of the 24 bit file by 48 decibels (a lot!) to make a file which is most similar in actual amplitude to the 16 bit file. Since you only need 6 dB of headroom and not 48 dB of headroom that's quite a bit of extra headroom, while still preserving at least the16 bit resolution in essence.
Someone might call this 24 bit internal processing of a 16 bit file.
It's interesting, because 17-bit files don't exist. Actually, the more bits, the better, because quantization error is less and less of a distortion/noise-creator the higher up you go in bit resolution.
Somebody correct me if i got my facts mixed up.
This issue of just changing the amplitude of just the stereo or mono part of a waveform is exactly the kind of thing which is an issue in some hardware compressor/limiters. Because most compressors are run in linked stereo mode (as opposed to dual mono mode), most compression is slightly in favor of compression of the mono component. Basically, the compression imparts a subtle monaural amplitude envelope modulation to a stereo waveform in linked mode. In dual mono mode, you get true stereo separation and preservation of the stereo image, but this doesn't always sound better.
Joint stereo demonstrates that bass often sounds better in mono mixed with stereophonic treble. This funny kind of separation is especially useful in dance music. This is for the same reasons that kick drum and bass drum are almost always panned to center. Bass just often sounds better in mono. This is somewhat tied to how speakers handle bass, and somewhat tied to how acoustics broadcast wide bass airwaves to (or around) our ears/heads.
This is all pretty abstract unless you put it into practice. I don't expect everybody to understand all of this, but it will make sense to some engineers out there.

How to get JUST the voice for a mix.
Hi,
I want to have the voice from a song without the beats etc so that I can use it in mixes etc. Does anyone know a good way to do this? I've tried with a music editor but it is a junky one (i suspect) and I don't really know much about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Chris
Re: How to get JUST the voice for a mix.
No can do, I'm afraid. The best bet is to search for acapella versions or remixes of the song and grab the best bits of the vocal track that way. Some can be found online, while others are easily available in the shops. You can experiment with an audio editor, getting rid of certain frequencies, but you probably won't have the perfect result you're looking for.

Akai S3000 & Mac G4
Hi
I’m serching for help about connecting AKAI S3000 sampler and Mac G4 800 Mhz OS 9.2 via SCSI card!
Does it work in principle via connecting Adaptec 2906 card? Is it possible to work AKAI S3000 (CD 3000) with Mac G4 having SCSI card on PCI bus?
If it possible then:
· are any conditions about cards (bootable, nonbootable)
· are there any supporting software and utlities
· are there any demands for operating system, computer configuration
Thank you for your help!
Regards,
Ivan

Re: Akai S3000 & Mac G4
To be honest, I fitted a Adaptec 2903 (very similar to the 2906) and connected it to a SCSI zip drive which was then connected through (daisy chained) to a Yamaha Ex5r (Synth - Sampler). All you have to do is download the latest Adaptec driver software, install it and reboot.
From within a program called Peak (by Bias) I can send and receive samples to and from the sampler easily. I think there are some other Akai utilities for transfering files to and from a Mac. You would have to check that.

Lost in Space
If your intention is to store your AKAI sounds on the Mac G4 SCSI drive, I don't think this will work so simply. Basically, the AKAI has it's SCSI controller, and the Mac's SCSI controller is in the PCI card. On older Macs, the SCSI controller was built into the hardware system. Since both the PCI card and AKAI have controllers, they would be fighting over control of the SCSI hard drive under normal conditions if you tried to link them up. However, it could be done perhaps on a partitioned drive, but that's tricky.
I think the SCSI port of the AKAI is designed to be used with an external SCSI drive. However, if you have any extra SCSI hard drives around from an old mac, then if you just add a power supply and check the jumper settings, then you can use that drive. I am constantly using old drives from old computers by doing this.
If there is software that lets you share a SCSI drive between controllers, it's likely to be provided as a System Utility. FWB Hard Disk Tool Kit comes to mind. It's one of the most advanced SCSI softwares around. With it, you can create hard disk arrays and shadowing backup systems and stuff like that.
I'd check into that if i were you. Basically, see if you can contact a technical support technician at AKAI, as well. Their technical support is probably online, but they probably have a human that used to provide live support a few years ago, before phone menus and websites became popular.
Probably the biggest issue after the software will be of terminating the SCSI chain, and what SCSI ID each device needs. Also, the cabling will need to be compatible, but that's not so hard.
Even though I have basically been saying that it's all real hard, one thing that might not be so difficult is SMDI. I'm not sure, but I think it's a SCSI protocol for transmitting MIDI and maybe even sound information. If the AKAI supports it, then I imagine it will be easier to set up, because it's designed to make SCSI easier to use for bulk audio transfer procedures. SMDI is an older technology though, so it will be tricky to find support or info. Overall, contacting the manufacturers will be very important.
If you know anybody who has a Kurzweil K2000 keyboard, talk to them. Some of those guys know how to use SCSI and hardware synths. The last 3 guys I met who knew about SCSI and SMDI for audio were K2000 users.
I don't know about system requirements, but I know that it depends upon the individual components. In general, however, PCI cards add a little bit of a burden to the operating system with their software driver files. However, because PCI is designed to take work away from the computer CPU, it takes away some burden. A good PCI device will be faster than equivalent software emulation or other connections usually. There are exceptions, though. 3D and graphics PCI cards have been known to slow down systems because they suddenly make the system think it can do things it really can't, just because the card is there in the PCI slot.
There are some freeware utilities for examining PCI slot activity, but at the moment, I can't remember the names. However, some such software is called "Gestalt" software. "Gestalts" are basically technical details about a system configuration. Gestalts give all the hardcore details about the CPU, RAM, chipsets, FPU, disk cache, VGA, busses, and some system software settings, etc. However, if you have the documentation for your SCSI card, you probably won't need such report softwares just to get the PCI card running. Nowadays, gestalts about PCI bus data and so forth are usually built into the PCI card software drivers, the hardware itself, and helped out a little by system software. For example, on the mac, the Sound Manager handles that kind of stuff. You don't have to worry about the Sound Manager though, because it's embedded inside the System file in the System Folder ever since OS 8.
You can be sure that having more RAM will decrease the likelihood of errors.
Also, since PCI device drivers are usually in the form of system extensions and control panels, you will want to make sure there aren't conflicts between the drivers and your other extensions. For example, antivirus software, power management software, and disk/ram compression extensions will often be the kind that might cause trouble.
I have on my system a free extension by Adaptec which forces SCSI devices to load AFTER system extensions are loaded. I forget what it's called, but I think its name starts with "SCSI". I found it at some site such as:
Versiontracker.com
Pure-mac.com
Mac.org
Info-mac.org
resExcellence.com
These are some of the best sites for Mac system enchancements.
In terms of your OS version, I have read that OS 9.2 still has some memory bugs in it. I think this is true because the computer I'm not right now (not mine) runs OS 9.2 and it does some weird things sometimes with old software.
I think OS 8.6 solved most previous memory problems, but OS 9 created a few others, since OS 9 is basically creeping into OS X architecture. OS X is totally different. OS 8 is most like older MacOS's, OS 9 is still a bit familiar, but has "Carbon" functions and changes. "Carbon" is basically a set of system components which were added at OS 9, and preceded OS X. Some Carbon stuff can be run on OS 8, but you have to have "CarbonLib" (& "NavigationLib" & "SOMobjects") installed usually.
As you can see, this business is so painfully tricky. Just remember, OS 8.6 is the minimum requirement for stable USB support while still in OS 8. Meanwhile, OS 9 is probably more stable in most ways, except that it is so different from OS 8, that new bugs came up. OS X was a total change, and most people say that it's memory is tricker to understand but usually more stable. Of course, people always say that at first--errors take a while to become noticed.
In general, it's not very wise to run the very latest OS version, because it's usually too young to have been supported very much. Supported software has lots of freeware and online help and people with experience. By now, OS 7 is extreme supported by the online community, but not so supported by Apple. OS 8 fixed up most OS 7 errors, but not all. OS 9 introduced a lot of built-in web and networking issues, such as Apple Remote Access and Airport and Live Update. So many bugfixes in OS 9 which cured OS 8 came with new issues. Also, USB came at about the same time. This kind of pattern gets really dull really fast, but it's important to be aware of the history so you don't chase your own tail for months and months on each upgrade version.
In conclusion, what will save you the most time will be the constant self-reminder of "What am I *really* trying to accomplish?". If you keep
asking yourself that, then you won't waste so much time reading junk like this. An AKAI and a G4 are seriously powerful components already, but most hardware never fully lives up to it's reputation. You may have to just be content with that. Much of the time you can save lots of mind-ache by keeping an old fashioned mixer available so you can flow back to analog if your hardware issues get to bogging you down.
I don't usually give such long drawn out answers, but what the hell.
You went the extra mile to buy an AKAI S3000 and a G4. Just a few years
ago, nobody had power like that except the elite. As long as you can sample, sequence, mix, process, record, and store.... who cares what you use.
Maybe the computer isn't so handy for storing in this case. For a while, people in studios were using Iomega Jaz drives with their hardware samplers.
Since the AKAI S3000 is from that era (of Syquest drives and such), it's probably designed for that kind of storage flexibility.
The G4, is more of a USB than SCSI kind of device. Meanwhile, the PCI slot is prime territory for sound cards that use SPDIF, TDIF, adata lightpipe, and AES/EBU. PCI isn't really where to find storage devices.
Contemporary software is really keenn on effects processing and looping, but not so great for performance or mixing or compression and EQ. Good hardware outboard rack stuff is still better at that. For example, some pro consoles have a compressor on every channel. That makes multiband compression a natural option of every mix, all the time. Neve consoles are like that.
Well, for sure I'm rambling on again. This is what happens to an audio techie who has spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME pondering this kind of thing. Focus on the music, and you won't end up a robot alien invader like me.
