I hereby solemley swear that I don't work for Cakewalk. Sonar is a very, very, serious contender for best multitrack and midi software on the Windows platform. Here's why. 1. It can use WDM drivers, which are comparable to Asio drivers in regard to latency. A lot of soundcards are available with WDM drivers including Creative Labs Soundblaster. If you don't know what this means do some research on drivers. 2. DXi instruments, which are comparable to VST allow for low latency playing of these instruments directly into a audio track. 3. Super cool interface, everything is available on one screen. 4. Internal loop processing-Sonar has built in loop production and editing comparable to Acid and can use acidized loops. I hate to contradict my man Kozida but Sonar is much more than a upgrade of Pro 9. I've tried demos or full versions of every major multitrack software and for WINDOWS Sonar is the best.
Re: The best music Software program ???
Some say Pro Tools, some Cubase.
It's really a matter of money.
Realistic samples usually means realistic use of good samples (if you ever tried drum pads to produce midi and applied good samples to it, you'll know what I mean)...
depends on what style of music u do - nm

plugins to remoe voice from songs
im looking for a plugin or tool for removing voices and vocals from a song, are there any good ones? thanks draX
Re: plugins to remoe voice from songs
If you'd had a quick look through previous postings to this site, you'd have found the answer...there aren't any. It is impossible to remove vocals from songs (at least not without removing other parts as well).

Recording music from satellite dish
I am looking for recording software that will allow me to record music from a digital satellite station to CD The staion broadcast non stop music with no dj's. It would have to have the capability to insert pauses between tracks
Re: Recording music from satellite dish
if u have it piped into your PC any freeware audio editor will do. save the take as a wav file then burn with a cdburner. wav files are big so make sure you have a spare 700MB for a cd worth of audio - 70minutes worth.
you can edit in pauses yourself to the audio file before saving as a wav file with the audio editor.
i wanna record real player streaming audio

syncing the roland vs-880 to logic audio platinum
I know this has been asked many times before...and I'm sure there's an easy answer but I just can't quite figure out what I'm doing wrong with syncing my 880 with logic. It's driving me nuts. Would anyone with the same setup please help a guy out? Many thanks.
You do it like this...
Load a song in the VS then go to the "Sync/Tempo" menu and select "EXT" instead of "INT". This means that the VS will accept sync from the midi input (which should be fed from the computer running logic of course).
Go to logic and open the syncronisation settings menu. Click on the 'general' tab and make sure the FPS is on 30fps, if it isn't, change it... If it prompts for 29.9 then ignore it and go for 30fps. Click on the 'midi' tab and select the output for the MTC (midi time code) to the midi port that is routed to the VS. Click the little box so it outputs.
Close the window and go back to the VS. Press the play button and it should start flashing. Press play on logic and the VS should start playing...
Get back to me if it doesn't

Follow this link and scroll down to "Roland VS support". Its kind of a clunky system but it does work.

searching for reviews on Cakewalk Sonar
I'm looking for an informed opinion of Cakewalk's Sonar. The only opinion I've heard so far is from someone who watched someone else use it. They only said it has a lot of bells and whistles and must be hard to navigate. I want to hear from someone who has used those bells and whistles to their advantage.
Re: searching for reviews on Cakewalk Sonar
I have been using Sonar since it was released in the UK. What I will say is that if you are new to PC recording I would say Sonar is a perfect application. It is very easy to get into, probably will not have to look at the help directory much, if at all (especially if you are familiar with Cakewalk). It has got loop construction as someone said, which I think is very good, especially if you use samples and you haven't got a sampling unit.
It enabled you to pitch/tempo match and you can use the loop explorer to play the sample along with your track to see if it fits.
The layout is simple and informative. In itself it comes with a good range of soft synths etc.. I say that, I use hardware so have not really tried them out, but they look ok :)
Sonar makes useful things very simple to do. Loop wav, change chord of wav, adding envelopes, all really simple and effective.
What I would say about Sonar though is that it seems to be a right heavy bastard, and you need a pretty swift PC to get it to run perfectly.
I am running a 533 mhz PC with 400 + of ram and that still has a dog of a time. Now upgrading to a 1.4ghz with new motherboard and more RAM than you can shake a stick at. Basically to keep Sonar on its toes.
Also if you have plugins etc, some of those may have worked fine on CW 8/9 but I have found some of them did not agree with Sonar.
Overall its a good Multitracker and a good step up from Cakewalk 9. Although sometimes a little more unstable.

Re: searching for reviews on Cakewalk Sonar
OK - so SONAR sounds good; If purchasing a
MIDI/Multitrack system for the first time though, whould
you buy SONAR or Pro Audio 9? I understand the
main advantage of SONAR is the acid-like loop capability
which, I don't think I'm going to use at this point.

Dub: Sonar IS the upgrade of Pro Audio 9. I didn't understand that until recently. It is superior in many ways
Re: searching for reviews on Cakewalk Sonar
CoolGuy you're right, but since I can't use cubase's virtual instruments on sonar for example, and there is a case about an old dog regarding new tricks, I'll stick to cubase (for now). I never use loops myself, I prefer the traditional way, so I'm not amazed with loop compatibility issues (it's my point of view -you don't have to be as single-minded as I am).
WDM drivers are the best news a SB live owners have ever heard, but unfortunately, I'm not an SB live owner.
I'm looking at the Digi 001 solution though, have worked thoroughly pro tools free version, and my topthree multitrackers would be:
1 cubase 5
2 pro tools
3 sonar xl
In case you want to mix your allready recorded music in a pro studio:
Cubase is more used by professional studios worldwide comparing to the other trackers, and has more plugins too,
Pro tools is a must for expensive studios (it doesn't mean the engineer nows how to use it wisely, since it's new, so YOU gotta know better than him).
Sonar since it's the newest it's subjected to be handled like pro audio 9 (due to compatibility reasons), keeping it's best features unused by the common engineer or you for that matter.

I hear what you're saying. There is plethora of plugins for Cubase and VST. Thing is a lot of that stuff does'nt work on my computer the way I want it to. I could probably tweak my system and change some hardware and make it work, But, Sonar worked immediatley with my existing configuration which yes is a [gasp] SoundBlaster soundcard. I'm a relative newbie {hate that word} to pc recording but have a unique way of working. I lay down a stero track recorded live to minidisc then transfer this to pc and edit, add effects, multitracking, with audio and midi instruments. The reason being my computer is in a different part of my house than my music studio. So you guys are way ahead of me in technical wizadry but I have been a musician all my life so I understand all the basic issues. I'm so glad that people like you have started to spend time on the forum because you're turning into what it's supposed to be. Rock On!
Re: searching for reviews on Cakewalk Sonar
It's like cakewalk 9 with cubase features (that were not applicable on pro 9). New interface doesn't mean you'll be lost on it, in fact it's a piece of cake. Don't expect miracles though, multiple views of tracks can't make the tracks sound great. I have to admit I don't use it anymore (since I mostly write audio tracks I prefer cubase), but if you check cakewalk's site carefully or www.audioforums.com you'll have some clues of the true pros & cons of Sonar.
I do think that sonar is cakewalk pro 9 with a couple of serious improvements (that help audio handling), and different color schemes...

slowing down tempo
I would like some software that will let me take a song off of a CD and be able to play it back at various slower tempos without changing the pitch.
In addition to my laptop, I have a Yamaha Clavinova that will play back .midi files at various tempos if that helps.
Audio recording on Laptop
I'm currently planning on purchasing a laptop
to do some audio recording and I want to make
sure I understand a couple things before
spending the money. The system
that I'm currently envisioning would be a
1 ghz Sager 8650 with 256 meg memory and a 30 gig
hard drive, re-writable CD player. For the audio part,
I'm planning on upgrading Cakewalk to Sonar. I have a
CAD EQUITEK 300 mic and a small behringer (sp?) mixing
board with phantom power (which is needed by the mic).
My question is regarding what else I need.
I'm currently thinking of also getting MIDIMAN's Quatro
but I'm not clear if this device is all I need to
get high quality audio -- does it effectively take
place of the likely cheap on-board sound card for
recording or do I also have to get some kind
of a sound card (the Omni Studio by the same company
seems to incorporate a decent soundcard) for good
recording?
Other devices I've been thinking about are
the Tascam US-428, Roland UA-30, and UA-100.
I'd rather initially (since I really can't afford
to spend a lot of money outside of the computer and
software upgrade from cakewalk) just use Sonar
for effects.
Any suggestions? I'm hoping to have something
that is a very solid base system for recording
that can be supplemented later if I have more money.
Thanks,
Zints
Re: Audio recording on Laptop
What level of quality are you looking for?
If you want professional level recording, the quality of the audio hardware on the laptop is not likely to be very good, and laptops are noisy (in terms of RF) which will detract still further from the quality of your recording.
I would suggest using an external box to do the analog to digital conversion. I'm sure others here can suggest some good hardware; unfortunately it will probably set you back a few bucks.

just leave the base of audio cd's
We are trying to filter original base, drums, guitar and other effects from audio CD's.
We are trying to acclompish a live musical duo. Both we are very professional musicians from Holland (keyboard/singing and clarinet/saxophone). At the moment we bought a drum machine which does'nt work as we want. To perform our music we would like to use the background of artists we'd like to "imitate". Sort of Music minus three or four. I'm convinced that with modern technology things can be done.
Who can help me? Please send me your rersponse.
Kind regards, Paul
Re: just leave the base of audio cd's
No, if you scroll down the forum you'll see that people asking about removing voice tracks only get negative answers (except kareoke tecnhology issues), imagine removing a sax, a trumpet & voices at the same time without leaving behind residues.
You can only use (legally that is) specific parts of specific songs under written permission of the owners of the songs (the recordings in particular) of the CDs you mentioned.
Versions of known songs with limited instruments or without voice tracks played by session musicians do exist and carry their own copyrights.
Therefore I can only suggest that you should locate pro musicians (like yourshelves) to assist you in your music (which is the humane thing to do), or pay for the samples you need...
After all a duo is a duo, and a concert for a duo, tape & orchestra is a totally different story...
Re: just leave the base of audio cd's
why you wanna do that?! Just listen to the tracks you like and copy very closely their style + rhytum if u like. You need good composing software/hardware not a copy machine. Tried dance ejay?

amplify a wav file without the humming noise!!!
I recently recorded something using my MD recorder and the battery for the mic was low (i didnt know at the time) and my recording is very faint. i want to know if there is a way to be able to amplify this wav clip without that noisy humming sound or how to remove that sound after the clip has been amplified. i really need to recover this clip, there is no way i can rerecord what i have so far.
Re: amplify a wav file without the humming noise!!!
Try the noise reduction plugins in the download section. Pick noise's spectrum characteristics manually from a silent spot and then remove all of it (be carefull, some of the high (or low) pitched noises will affect the song's quality if removed).

help! to split .wav file without pauses
I have several .wav files that are 75 mins long, and want to burn these onto cd. My problem is, when i split them up i get jumps, pauses. Is there a program which will allow me to put some sort of digital marker onto the .wav file, so that when it's burned onto the cd it has say 12 tracks with no gaps in the play, but if i want to skip forward i can!
what is the best music notation softwear?
What do you think is the best softwear for writing your own music? (just the best, as if money didn't factor into it)
Re: what is the best music notation softwear?
: What do you think is the best softwear for writing your own music? (just the best, as if money didn't factor into it)
Many people think that Sibelius is the best - for ease of use and features. However, I've downloaded the free demo and worked with it abit and there
are several things that I don't like. The main thing is the way the menu selections change the "mouse state" without any corroborating
display (like the mouse icon changing). So if you want to transpose a staff for example, you select staff-transpose (after lots of searching through
the menu bars) and then point and click on the staff you want to change. Problem is, what if you go to the bathroom after the menu selection? Come back and you
have no idea what your mouse will do when you click on something !!
That said, most people say it's infinitely easier to use than Finale, which has been the defacto standard up until recently.
If you don't want a lot of features and prefer ease of use, there are many low-cost solutions. I use Noteworthy Composer (main defect is no transposing of chord symbols)

to write or transpose music to the the "easy play"
