Ok, I'm an idiot...trying to find a simple drum simulator in rea

Ok, I'm new to this site and completely new to music as it relates to the computer, so please bear with me. Every drum program I've tried off of this site is of the type where you lay down the beats and fills on a grid and then play them back after the fact. I guess they call these "drum samplers"? What I want to know is are there any programs where you can actually assign different drums, and or instruments for that matter, to various keys on your keyboard and play them live in real time? That way, you are actually playing all the drums yourself, instead of programming various beats and dropping various fills in here or there. If so, can anyone recommend such a program(s)? I guess I would liken it to a music keyboard whereas you play drums using the keyboard keys, if that makes sense. If there is such a program, I can't seem to find it...if there's not, well then there ya go.

Thanks. HS

Sure...

Have you tried any plugin software synth/sampler/drum machines?? Have you checked out the Halion from steinberg? LM4 or EXS24 for logic audio?

You can interface a midi keyboard to these and play them across the keyboard... although they require a VST plugin compatible host program, (logic audio cubase etc...).

What programs have you tried from this site, there are tons in there I would be surprised if there isn't a midi addressable drum sampler in there. Am I missing something???

Steve...R

You're not an idiot.

But most of the programming experts think that drummers read music sheets before they play their first groove (usually with 2 fingers at the age of 3 or so).

Yeah Man, there is a free program called Soundplant that let's you assign any wave sample to any key. Might be available on this site if not search the web.

audio clean-up

Anyone know of a good audio clean-up program for old scratchy LP albums?

converting mp3 to midi or karoake files!

i need to know how to convert a mp3 file into a midi file or a karoake file very badly. will anybody help me know the method?!

Re: converting mp3 to midi or karoake files!

Unfortunately, there isn't. A midi file comprises multiple tracks, one for each instrument. Once they have been mixed down to a stereo track (i.e. a WAV or MP3 file), there is no way to extract the individual instruments. Likewise, there is no way to remove the vocals from a track without affecting the tonal quality of the music.

Early 70s Top of the Pops LPs

I am looking for Top of the Pops LPs from the late 60s, early 70s. Can anyone help?

Re:

Try feeding a good search engine with "Top of the pops", online stories (like music companies) have limited taste (no offence)...

I have some.. hehe...

I have some of those, maybe 3 from the seventies. They are stored on my mothers loft I think... What do you need them for out of interest? It's worth checking charity shops if you like in the Uk as there are loads of them around...

Starting electronic music making

I'm just a beginner and have experimented with "Dance Ejay", and had a really good time with it. I want to try and create music, just like on Dance Ejay, with computer software, but I don't know where to start. Is there anyone who can help me???

Re: Starting electronic music making

Go to www.sonicfoundry.com. This is one of the best ways to learn how to make PC based music. From begginer to pro use Software from this company. I have Acid Pro 3.0 and have no talents in this until now. In 60 days I pumped out 4 top songs and I only know 10% of the software. Quality music at a fair price!!! Good Luck!!!

Re: Starting electronic music making

There's a million options, at least. Best thing is to play to your strengths. Do you already have a musical background? Can you play an instrument? If you can play keyboards, then MIDI offers a wealth of potential, but it offers much less if you can't. I'm a guitarist/bassist and have built an audio-based studio around Cubase VST, Cool Edit Pro, shareware effects plug-ins, a small mixer and a medium-spec PC with a semi-pro soundcard. You could buy the lot for less than US$5000 and it kicks a fair amount of arse.

Problem with new zip drive on Roland VS-840

HOW CAN I GET MY VS TO WORK WITH A NEW ZIP-DRIVE???

Two zip disks went bad at one time so I tought my zip-drive was broke.
I bought a new Iomega Zip-drive (just like the original) and installed it.
I found it three times slower than the original drive and it can record 4 simultaneous tracks only few secongs before it hangs up.
I Initialized (physical format on) with the new drive and recorded to that zip but no help.

My old drive works like a charm but some day it will die...uuh.

Iomega said that all 100 MB zip-drives are equall.

Please help...could you mail your answer direct to me ( kristian.tiihonen@wartsila.com)

Thanx

Update the OS...

You can update the VS's OS from the roland site via Midi... It may be worth doing this just incase there is a software error of sorts... Worth a try anyway...

I am on my second Zip100 which I use via SCSI for sampler and synth data backup.. The first one died with a weird clicking sound that turned out to be something that was dubbed 'The click of death'. I confronted iOmega and they asked me to hold the drive up to the telephone so they can hear the clicking noise, (really they did...;0). They replaced it even though it was way out of warranty via courier the next day.

All i'm saying is, they have fluffed up with their drives in the past and there is a small chance that (if the drive is indeed dead) it maybe a design problem. Worth a try...!

Did you try Roland's technical support section?

Akai MESA II troble...

Hi!

I am writing to you in the hope that you can help me:

I have an s2000 which I have connected to my PC via SCSI. When I boot my sampler, the "TEST MENU" appears on the screen. When I then start MESA and begin
loading several s3p-programs into the sampler with their associated wav-files, the sampler accidently allocates the wrong samples to the wrong
programs..!

Do you have any idea...?

THANX!!!

I think...

...there is a utility for the S2000 for sample dumps but I don't know where you would find it. Akai's site is a good start.

I do sample dumps using SMDI which manages to get it right every time. SMDI can be found in many audio editors, have a look around...

I make sound effects

I make really good sound effects-video games, instruments, birds, ect. Is there a demand for people like me. I'm often compared to Michael Winslow. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks,Michael

Re: I make sound effects

I guess. But you need to do more than just make the noises. Be a performer. That's how Winslow did it.

M3u files

Is there any way, after downloading m3u files, that you can burn them onto CD. Even though they are protected and you need to be online to play them.

Re: M3u files

If I'm right, you can burn them. But all m3u files contain are the links to the MP3s to be played. They're text files, meaning you can open them up and see the location of the files you are after.

How can I get my old computer to recognize CD-R's and CD -RW's

I'm trying to share some music files with my son, and when I put the CD-RW in the old computer's CD ROM drive it dosn't recognize it. It works with any other CD. Is there an application that will fix this problem, or how can I fix it?

Thanks,

Paul

Re:

Andy P is propably right, but check CD-Rom's company site just in case there is a solution.
Try burning a simple CD-Rom (not a CD-RW)...

Re: How can I get my old computer to recognize CD-R's and CD -RW

You can't. Your CD-ROM is too old. To read CD-R/CD-RW disks, the laser pickup needs to be more powerful and more finely
focussed to read the data. I'm afraid there's no way you can modify it.

You could always link the two computers with a serial cable and transfer the files that way.

Burn Mp3 to CDs

when burning mp3 to cdrs always getting a slight gap
in between tracks(terrible with live music)
tried using MP3 CD Maker & MusicMatch Jukebox
even with 2 second gap removed always the same

Re:

Check mp3s with an mp3 editor, sometimes gap is added when performing digital audio extraction(DAE), or while encoding to mp3 (MMJB settings)...

Out Of This World Midi Drums...

If you happen to come across any midi drum patterns that sound like B.Cobham, J.Bonham, N.M.Walden, M.Mangini and such, reply...
Strange bar counts like 3/4, 5/4, 7/8, 11/4, 7/3 etc are welcome too.

I sympathise...

I have looked for this sort of thing rather than drum loops (don't use them...) as programming my own can be quite stressful when you just want some inspiration. Can't say i've ever found many good ones other than the bloke that played Firestarter by the prodigy. I think there were some patterns from him lying around somewhere..

The link below is a resource that I use a lot and although it may not have what you are looking for, it may just be somewhere you haven't looked yet...

Good luck dude

Steve..R

Thanks for the tip.

The site you mentioned looks usefull (I'll check it more carefully later), and no I don't use sampled drum patterns. Every drum note's volume has to be flexible in order to follow specific melodic shapes, so I am thinking of using my little midi guitar pickup and a lot of patience, to do the trick instead of manual editing (which would be done faster, though).
Thanks again Steve...R

No probs...

I have found some interesting aids in making a basic drum riff move in a human(ish) way. I don't know if you have tried this but, in Logic Audio (and other apps I suspect) there is a audio analysing midi groove quantising feature. In other words, I get a audio section of a James Brown drum riff (on it's own) and let Logic analyse it. I can then apply that to a basic "bom tish" kick, snare and hats pattern and get some interesting results. It took me a while to figure it out but I have my sampler playing along with james in quite a funky way... Never used anything like it before... '0)

Cya dude

Steve...R

You're right

I used the same procedure on cakewalk 9 (seems like years ago, but was just last year), my head might need some serius examining this time. Same feature is available on both Sonar and Cubase.
Sometimes I think I'm getting too old for this sh- crap.
Thanks again.

Re: Out Of This World Midi Drums...

Apart from playing them ;) you might be able to just grab drum tracks out of MIDI versions of songs.

Lisa

Still Looking...

I make my own midi drum patterns, but since my drummer (he's a pro, plays like previously mentioned drummers), works all the time (so do I), and doesn't have a clue about computer music, I have to make all of my new music with midi drums in order to get ready for a studio recording.
Drummer lives too far away from me & the bass player, to rehearse daily with us, so I got to simulate him on midi and after using a virtual instrument, make it sound closer to natural drums.
I can't materialise his solo patterns anyway, but since the drum patterns involve complicated instrumental music like Fusion Jazz, Rock, Blues, and more (sth like Tribal Tech with more guitar in it), I got to find the best there is. I don't have the time to search myself, though I do (Washington University's FTP did have a nice collection of midi files, so did Sonar & Cubase programs).
Drummer's first CD with me in it was too unrehearsed -it was recorded in 4 days and I was denied the option to correct errors & add extra material, so after it went out I disassembled the band and decided to produce, record & master my own CD.
I don't have Digi 001 yet, so I can't arrange a demo recording in my place. Working with midi can be very time-consuming (the CD would be 79mins, that means at least 40 multi-channel demo tracks should be created to pick 12-23 tracks for the CD)and that's why I need every midi pattern I can get.

If you have a CD player that can play CDs with MP3s it's simple- just burn a data CD with the MP3s you want and you're home free.

If you need regular audio CDs then you need to convert the MP3s to standard audio files before burning. There are lots of free MP3 programs that will do this for you.

Alternatively you can find a burning program that will do the conversion on the fly. I'm not sure if any of the free ones are worth the effort- I use a program called RipEditBurn from www.blazeaudio.com. They do have a 30 day free trial version that will let you decide if you like the program.
