Cheap soundproofing

I like in a small apartment in Phoenix and I need to soundproof an area so I can do some vocal tracks. Does anyone have any cheap ideas that I can steal that won't tear up my place, cost lots of $$ and will work decently?

I would appreciate it a lot.

First off, distinguish between sound proofing and sound treatment for your room. Sounds proofing is an attempt to stop sound leaving a space and is highly expensive to be effective. Sounds treatment is an attempt to make a room sound 'right' for listening or recording.

The best way is to check out some of the foam and bass trap (room treatment) suppliers such as Auralex or Primeacoustics (which is generally cheaper). They have room kits that you can install yourself. It's not that cheap but it's definitely worth it in the long run. Check out their sites as they do take orders where you send them the dimensions of the room and they will design a kit for you. Even if you don't buy from them, you will get some ideas as to what you should be doing.

As far as really cheap room treatment is concerned, you can get decent results from draping and mattressing out a room with as much soft material as you can find. Standing a mattress up in a makeshift box and draping the sides with sheets and duvee's has been done successfully many times. Keep away from walls and ambient spaces as rooms that sound good to sing in don't usually carry very well to a track. Keep it dead when you record (general rule).

Choosing the right mic for the job and the right mic position is another consideration. Experiment and you will find something that works...

Firstly, you should experiment a bit around your apartment. Sometimes the bathroom can provide an interesting ambience.

Try using heavy curtains around the walls etc. they absorb quite a lot of sound and create a really nice sound for recording vocals. also try carpets. they have the same effect.

New Vocomber audio demo and more!

The release of Vocomber will take a while still, I'm experimenting with some new techniques and combinations, which lengthens the development process heavily. I made another demo audio (sounding quite different from the previous ones) which uses a combination of some of the components being worked on, resulting in an ambient like 'newage' soundscape thing (be aware that this doesn't reflect 'the' sound of the Vocomber). The demo audio is like previous examples midi note controlled.

Another note: AntiPro synthesis will probably change name in the near future (we notice that the name AntiPro doesn't really make people take us seriously, which is kind of logical :)). Also Vocomber might result in a product with a different name, since as new ideas and algorithms grow it's becoming apparent that the name Vocomber doesn't really cover the plugins features anymore (also it sounds an awful lot like cucumber if you think of it :)).

getting error message on nero cd burner

HELP WITH BR1180

Ok I'm a better Player, I hope than a recording tech. Question/Problem: Guitar, electric, volume is cut in half when I use mic. and try to play guitar and sing together? In other words Guitar sounds Good have some effects on it but when I plug in mike and hit simul(lighting both mic and guitar) volume of guitar becomes very low and Guitar effect seems cut out?? I'm sure its a Zen and the Art kind of a thing. HELP

Transfering a track from Reason Adapted to ProTools

I wan't to know how I can take a track from Reason and put it in Pro Tools. It says that this version of Reason is compatible with PT, but I think I am missing something, I cant import it to PT. If anyone could help, that would be grrrrrreat!

You have to open Pro Tools first. Then, under your inserts, you should see "Reason" listed. Select this, and then select L1 R1 for the audio outputs that come up.

sound quality on audioedit deluxe

I downloaded this software as a way of recording music as wave files, I made myself from a boss br-532 digital recorder and plugging it in to my pc as a line in device. I had previously used the simple microsoft sound recorder but I found that the quality of the wave file decreased as the recording spanned over a minute long. Once using the new software I found that this problem was still occuring. Its is a sort of crackling sound seemingly fromthe microphone and the sound occasionally skips like a scratched cd. I know it is not the hardware that is the problem.It sounds fine through an amplifier and is fine going into the computer but it is the recording of it once on the pc that sounds bad.
Do you have an answer?

I would opt for a soundcard problem. What one do you use...?

If it's a stock, cheap soundcard then think about replacing it with a decent audiocard...

.ram files are links to music on the internet? odd they work fine on my computer without it being connected to an ISP.... maybe you're thinking of .ra files.... opening them in notepad reveals a URL.... hmmm.... I'm stuck in the same dilema... as I used the .ra's to get the .ram's... I found a lot of programs that will do the job... if you want to pay money... email me and I'll let you know when I finally find some descent freeware for ya....

a ram file is a command in a text format which directs your browser to play a wav file or mp3 or any kind of file when your surfing the world wide web. cant convert them files. its a long story. BUT you can convert wav's to mp3's or vise versa. even aif files wma files. a good program that does all of the above (except ram)is the recording software "cool edit". theres other less expensive software out there. i know adaptec's (roxio) software can do this...i think. then again theres always kazaa for the illegal "cool edit" version...did i say that?

Can I put mp3's from my computer onto cassette tapes

You'd need a cassette recorder. Try using LINE OUT of your sound card into your recording device.

I did this alot until I got a CD burner and an MP3 player. It works pretty good. Just tape as you normally would. the only problem is that my sound card did not put out enough volume, I had to come out of the headphone jack of my powered speakers and that added some noise. But when I played the tapes in my car they sounded great.

Doggle for Avid Software

I am not sure what kind of doggle I need for Avide Software. Any help on this subject would be very helpful. I am running windows XP and it asking for a doggle to run. I have the Radeon AGP All-In Wonder and the Creative Sound Blaster PCI 512 with the Yamaha PSR Keyboard thru my midi port on the sound card. My enternet is thru DSL. What do I need to run AVID.

It's called a Dongle.

It's a bit of hardware you plug into your computer to make a piece of software work. It's an idea to stop illegitimate users using their software without paying for it.

Split stereo field into seperate tracks?

Does anyone know of a software package that will take a .wav and split it into 'multitracks' based on the positioning of the stereo panning? i.e. seperate out voice, guitar, drums etc based on where they are positioned in the mix.

I am confused at your question. You want to take out sections of the stereo mix as in chunks of the stereo field?

You can't pull out individual instruments from a stereo field unless they are on their own physical track.

You can convert a voice recording to MIDI and then convert MIDI to sheet music. It might be hit or miss but give it a go.

hello, recently I formatted PC. I used to have 3 audio jacks on the back of my live card connected to my stereo via audio jack to RCA leads.. this was setup so that 1 jack was left/right speaker, another jack rear speakers and the other jack for center. I reinstalled the latest driver etc but now I only have left/right speakers and no rear/center speakers. for the life of me I cant remember how I set that up.. My question is does anyone have any idea how to set this? My advanced mixer says its 5.1" but only the 1 audio jack is outputting sound...
