Re: Cakewalk 9 problem

I have same problem. Not sure but I believe it may be what is called a "latency" issue, and is related to the speed of your processor, or perhaps related to background activity on your computer computer.

: how do i burn a mpga file to a normal audio cd? so i can listen t it in my cd player.
step 1: there is an program called "ufony", whit this program you can make from a mpga an mp3, you can download this free on the internet.
step 2: then there is an program called "Nero",
i thing you can download this program also free on the internet iff you don't already have it. this program can make from an mp3 file an audio file while youre burning an cd. Now you can play the cd on you'recd player.

MP3 file to audio CD? Just head to the CD Burning section of this site and you'll find a number of programs that will do the job for you, with little need for you to do anything other than point n click.

I'd go to <a href="http://www.mp3machine.com">MP3Machine</a> and take a look in the EDITORS section for tools that do this.

Vocalist/Songwriter with no instrumental ability!
I can sing and create new music in my head but I have no experience with instruments of any type or even writing music. I can pluck a few notes on a keyboard and occassionally figure out a chord or two and I can read music to an extent. I was hoping to find software that would convert my vocals into written sheet music and/or help me add instrumental accompaniment. Any ideas?
Re: Vocalist/Songwriter with no instrumental ability!
Howdy Leanne,
First off from your Subject "Song writer with no instrumental ability!". Your voice is your instrument and don't you forget it!!! A persons voice is the most natural and persuasive instrument known to all of man kind. No other instrument can bring a person to tears faster and more effectively.
Secondly, in response to your question, "I was hoping to find software that would convert my vocals into written sheet music and/or help me add instrumental accompaniment. Any ideas?" You need to find someone who can help you turn your ideas into a publishing reality. Computers are not this advanced yet. You cannot sing into a Mic and expect your computer (or confuser, as I like to call them) to figure out what you just did. Computers are about as smart as a box of rocks. Sure, they can tell you what Hertz your vocals are at, but they will not be able to convert your thoughts into something that can be easily read by another musician. I have yet to find a program that can intelligently perceive what key I am in just by plugging some notes in. Try having someone play a few easy peices by Grieg into a $1,500 sequencer and then have it display what was played. I can already tell you for a fact that a peice written in the key of C# Minor (5 sharps) will be diplayed as being that of key C Major with a whole slew of both flat, double flat, sharp, and double sharp accidentals. Not very readable, unless you are an extremly exceptional musician. Mozart didn't even pass this test, although Czerny did. (Student of Beethoven and teacher of Liszt.)
Both what Rimmer and Nigel have suggested are excellent starting points, but, and this is a big big but, their suggested path is for people that have some knowledge of musical notation, audio recording, and musical theory. Believe me, you just might give it all up if do not realize what makes music, music. Don't limit yourself to what others have done on the computer. No computer to-date can replace you, your voice, or your creativity.
I know that I lot of people are going to "dog" me for calling upon the theory part, yet it can be quite frustrating when you have recorded or wrote a vocal piece in the key C Major and then want to add a Alto Sax, which resides in the native key of F# Major or E-flat Major. Although some programs support this by allowing you to transpose an instruments' key, most programs do not care what the native key of the instrument is, because they do not know, but only what note the instrument recorded as middle C. Unless you possess the secret of perfect pitch or extreme patients, you will have no idea what key you are transposing from or to the key that makes you NOT want to climb inside the dumpster behind the local pub and snap your toes off one by one with a rusty pair of wire-cutters.
Play around with the programs, for beginners it does not matter what type of computer you have, and it won't be a waste of time. Once you become familiar with a few of them then you will know them all. Even the professional ones. Yet, if you find yourself in love with the process, then do your research. IBM's have been about 10 years behind the times with regards to music and musical programs. Just frequent some recording studios and you will find one to two platforms prevelant: Mac and Amiga. Eventhough, there are now some killer freeware and shareware programs out there for the Microsoft IBM. I started with computer music in the early eighties (VIC-20 with Tape Drive, thheee sllooowwwww daayyyssss) and have never stopped. Also, don't put much in technology, most of what you see today, including CD and DVD technology was developed a very long-long-long time ago. Sony or RCA, can't remember which, recorded their first 24-bit digital recording in 1919 with Sergei Rachmaninov at the ivory's using nothing more than cow-hide music rolls and releasing it on vinyl records.
Also, please remember that music has no languistic or intelligectial boundries. Yes, even really really dumb person, even one who hasn't the brain power to speak nor nod, can become a master of an instrument.
For a long term goal I would "strongly" suggest that you find someone, a friend perhaps, that knows the basics of music theory. Someone who knows the Major key of C## (that's right a double sharps) and how it relates to the key of F-flat-flat (that's right double flats). Actually, these are the same key. See how confusing our former child prodigies made this. (Damn Beethoven for his explicit use of the C# Minor Key, that's a lot of &*@!ing sharps.) And there will be those that will say, "What? That doesn't exist. Never heard of such a thing." For those people have them try and read (and even attempt to play) a score by Ravel. Ravel would sometimes even use triple flats and sharps. Hell, just try and listen to his music and make some sense of it. Seek Instruction!!!
Here are some cheats, if you do not already know:
(These only apply to current popular A-Toner music. Other cultures, mainly that of African, Southeastern Asia, and a few others use a totally different method of writing, reading, and perceiving music. If you really want a mind job go a find some African or some Native American using quarter tones, absolutley awsome!!!)
** The notes on the Treble Clef:
What do the lines represent? The notes go as Follows:
"'E','G','B','D','F'"
What do the spaces represent? The notes go as follows:
"'F','A','C','E'"
** The notes on the Bass Clef:
What do the lines represent? The notes go as Follows:
"'G','B','D','F','A'"
What do the spaces represent? The notes go as follows:
"'A','C','E','G'"
** Octaves:
Every Octave is made of 13, yep 13 bad number, huh. A half-step is one key, black or white, on a piano, or a single fret on a guitar using any string. An octave is the relationship of a single note with another note that is in exact harmony only at a different pitch. (Also, you might want to research harmonics. Try this: If you have a piano handy, sorry a guitar won't work unless you have whole lot of of friends around, find a note on the piano that you know you can really belt out. Make sure that the note is NOT being played on the piano and sing as loud and true as you know how. If you are the same Hertz then after you run out of air you will hear the strings from the piano that match the key's "harmonics", not just the tone, will make a sound that will resonate making it appear that a little elf inside the piano is stroking it like a violin.)
** What does sharp (#) mean?
Sharps always mean 1 half-step up.
** What does flat (b) mean?
Flats always mean 1 half-step down.
** What Major key am I in?
* First see if you are in sharps or flats.
* For a key in Sharps find the next note 1 half-step above the last sharp printed on the stave, this note represents the Major key that you are currently in.
* For a key in flats, find the last flat and count 6 half-steps down. This is you Major key.
** What minor key am I in?
First, find the Major key you are in and count 4 half-steps down. This you minor key.
****** There is soooo much more to learn ******
Hopefully, these simple theory cheats will help curve the frustration level. Also, I would like to make a point and pre-strike all those who say you don't need any of this. For 4 years, I competed as a Concert Pianist, now retired, and have known scores of musicians that could not read a single note of music, but could play back pratically anything they ever heard and could even improvise on the melody, and some on multiple instruments. Yet, not one of them made a successful monetary or personal career out of professional music. (Nor did I for that matter.) This is for one reason, when I tell you that the next piece is to be played in A-flat Major, what notes do you already know have to be flat? How about the key of A-flat Major within the Mixilodian Church mode, do some tone notes get sharped? What happend when the peice changes from 5 sharps to 7 flats?
Best regards, and by the way, I am sick of "Mickey Spears" and the rest of gang. Give me something new to hear for a change. Even Dylan's son is worthless, although he can sing a single note for more the two seconds.

Re: Vocalist/Songwriter with no instrumental ability!
Nigels suggestions are good although I would say that you can't skimp on learning music. The programs he suggested will show you some things about arrangement and the like although there is no room in music making for being lazy. Get a chord book for the piano, there is loads of information on the internet, and get learning where to put your fingers whilst doing your cutting and pasting..

Re: Vocalist/Songwriter with no instrumental ability!
The easiest way is to play with something like Acid Xpress. You paste loops and samples together to make a musical arrangement. Obviously, you are limited to using the samples you have at your disposal. But the program is really easy as well as powerful for a beginner. Other than that, programs like FruityLoops and Reason are worthy places to start off. You should be able to make some workable demos to capture your ideas.

freeware or shareware?
I'm not sure of the nomenclature here and haven't found it discussed anywhere either. How about a difinutive answer to this question. Thanks,Nicolo
Re: freeware or shareware?
Both freeware and shareware is on this site. Put simply, freeware is free :) Shareware usually offers full functionality for a limited period of time, generally 30 days. After such a period, you are required to register the software if you wish to continue using it.

?!?
I am confused what the question is... Do you mean, what is the difference? or what is the best to use?

ProToolsFree+AMD+VIAchipset
Hey there music fanatics!
Maybe there's someone out there that has a solution to my problem? I'm trying to run ProToolsFree on my AMD 1 GHz PC, with win98SE and an ASUS motherboard with VIA chipset. On the Digidesign website they already explained that AMD/VIA could get you into trouble. But I tried installing anyway. The install went fine, in fact everything works, except I can't play files. I can open sessions, edit them, open plugins, process etc etc. But when I hit the play-button nothing happens. Changing buffer sizes doesn't help. So maybe someone knows a nice little tweak? I'd be very grateful!!
Re: ProToolsFree+AMD+VIAchipset
Other than accepting that you have the wrong chipset to make music ( sigh ) I would check what ProTools free is considering the clock to be.
What I mean is, when you press play on a sequencer that is capable of being clocked from a different source, it will only play (providing you have a legitimate song for it to play) if it is the master clock device. If you ran seperate sequencer or a SMPTE device as in a video studio and wanted the sequencer to play when the video was started, it would have to be set up as the slave clock device.
I know it's a bit of a long shot but there is a small chance that it thinks it's being controlled by an external MTC (midi time code) clock and therefore will just sit there. I don't know ProTools free very well so you will have to guide yourself to the syncronisation page (whatever that may be called) and check that it is the MTC Master device...
Other than that... ISTBU

Re: ProToolsFree+AMD+VIAchipset
Hi Rimmer,
: Other than accepting that you have the wrong chipset to make music ( sigh ) I would check what ProTools free is considering the clock to be.
You're absolutely right! But unfortunately I haven't got a very large budget at the moment. I will have to get the maximum from all the gear I have now. Later when I'm rich (hahaha, NOTT) I can afford a super totally firewire/cobranet/mLAN connected studio. Yeah...dream on...
For now I'm just stubborn enough to find out how I get something to work everyone tells me it won't. I suspect it has something to do with the DAE (Digidesign Audio Engine). The Digidesign site tells users that have problems with audio playback to delete all DAE preferences. That I tried, but it still wouldn't work. Also I checked all PT menues again and PT is configured as the master device. Thank you for the advice, but I think the problem's not really in this corner.
Well, whenever I have found the solution I will post it on this forum!

music composition on the computer...
Hey anybody, I am trying to compose my own music on the computer but it sounds like crap. I need to know how to make me not sound so muffled[ my mike is terrible], and if I should get a moniter and amplifier to hear myself better. I have no idea of the new stuff I should get. Please help!!
Re: music composition on the computer...
Give us some details of the equipment you are using, mic model, preamps etc etc.. and I will throw you an opinion on what I would call you next stage. Tell me how much cash you have to put into a solution. Also, what sort of music you are making and what instrumentation you use.
The solution is probably simple, but you may need to dip into the bank account..
