need help with cu baise

when recording on cu baise theres a delay of about 3sec

Have u tried another sequencer? If same results your may be using an emulated card like Yamaha's SY-XG50?n These soft cards need a delay so use your hardware soundcard instead. If on hard card then u need to alter recording buffers inside Qbase to as low as possible before clicking occurs - this should be milli-seconds not 3 seconds!!!

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a virgin to creating music on PC but does any one know of software that allows you to create riffs from scratch using the built in instruments i.e. sax, piano, bass etc.
I'd really appreciate it if some one could help me out.

That's what u need. There are a lot about so look round the software section of this site (link at top of main page). If u wanna buy then go no further than Data Beckers Music Centre Pro £29(www.databecker.co.uk/.com) which has excellent midi interation compared to any other sequencer on market - so long as u have an XG compatible soundcard or SY-XG50/100 installed.

Panning control in Roland's XP-30

XP-30 contains some sounds that has random panning. At first you hear it from left them maybe center... What should I do to get total control to them?

Interesting question. There are many synths that offer Random Panning as a Patch function. The whole idea though is that it is Random and therefore allowing you to fiddle with it would be defeating the whole effect.

If you want to pan something your own way then you should do it from a sequencer using a controller assigned to the main pan control for that Patch. You should be able to record that controller as a track so whilst your playing back what you have recorded, you could be recording a controller that is adjusting the pan for that patch. Play it back and you have the control your looking for.

If that is all too much for you (lightweight, hehe...) then you could get control of your XP's pan whilst playing back the track, fiddle away whilst recording the stereo output from the XP onto a Stereo Audio track on you computer.

Try Hotline. Go to www.download.com and DL the hotline client. Then go to www.hotlinehq.com and search for PC files that contain Rebirth 2.0. I have it on my server and it is widespread so you hould have no problems.

I spend a lot of my time arranging other peoples music that is sent to me over the internet. It depends very much on the music and how accomplished it is as I don't have time to do everything. What sort of music do you do, is it your own music or just cut and pasting of popular music. There is a lot of competition in this area and I generally avoid getting involved as I like all my instruments to be as home grown as possible.

It's not an answer as such, more an offering of service...

Cakewalk making strange sounds

I just installed an SBLive Platinum (not the 5.1) and everything is working fine with it and its software.

BUT, when I open the Cakewalk Express 8.0 that comes with the card, I cannot play midi. I mean, before i even open a midi file within Cakewalk, all kinds of strange sounds and instruments just begin to play at random. Even if I push the "stop everything" button, the sounds continue until I exit Cakewalk.

I've downloaded the PA 9.0 demo to see if it is just my program, but the demo gets the same result. I also tried my friends 6.0 and the same happened.

PLEASE help me!!!! I'm on the verge of tears trying to fix this! The most important program I NEED to use with the new computer, SBLive, CDR, that I bought last weekend! I really need this program to work or my future is dead!

Well if it worked fine before the installation of card there are 2 possibilities -
1) the card is incompatible in some strange way with Cakewalk - VERY unlikely that!
2) During installation some vital Cakewalk files were corrupted/overwritten - VERY likely suspect if probs happening!

So what u do is simply uninstall Cakewalk and remove any other Cakewalk files found in a file search. Then when it's ALL gone reinstall and hope for best! If no work then remove card and go back to old setup. If fine try again - try installing in different order. If still not working maybe there is a Cakewalk file hiding somewhere? If u can bear it a freash install of ME should wipe all traces of Cakewalk for a clean start.

good question!

start by typing in Cakewalk obviously (after uninstallation and/or using Remove Program facility) and see what comes up. There'll be a main folder maybe in Program Files? Dump that then just see what else come up. You can type in things like the maunfacturers name too (that would be 'Stienberg' for Cubase which shows results). Make a note of the date + time of your Cakewalk folder before uninstalling so that you can check this against files you suspect are related before deleting. It's will only take a minute you shouldn't be opening every folder on your computer! If unsure about a file drag it into the freshly emptied waste bin so that it is inactivated but easily returned (right click) if it's needed - this can be done in safe mode if computer fails to fully boot.

Question 2. was a little confusing though. There are tape "backup" devices but they are generally for backing up HD files for storage. If you want to record audio from your computer into a standard tape machine then just connect the audio output from your soundcard into the line inputs on a standard tape machine and record as you normally would.

Minidisk machines can be looked at in the same way as a standard tape machine as they just deal with 'Line Level' inputs and outputs with the added bonus of often having a Digital Optical link. If the Mididisk has an Optical out and your computer a SP/DIF connection (coaxial) then you can get a convertor. This will give you digital quality sound transfer and is recommend if you are trying to optimise audio quality. Try the Analogue ins/outs and see what you think of the sound quality before you plung into digital SP/DIF convertors, you maybe happy with it as is...

Remember though that Microphones and Line levels are different. I plug all my ins and outs into one of two Mixing desks that accept Mic level or Line level inputs so I can't comment on whether you can switch most soundcards inputs to either Mic or Line.

I do hope I can help but really I don't know much and infact make up much of my advice from things I've heard/read! Maybe u mean SteveR? He's much more knowledgable than me - he knows about midi too!

Well I'll try! - 1. How can I use a Standard Vocal Mic on regular windows sound card (I have Live value)

By 'Standard' u mean one with a 'big' jack? Well all u need is a 'big to little jack converter' (technical description) which will plug into your soundcards line/mic in no problem. Well actually the recording level may be a bit quiet so use 'microphone boost' in Windows Sound Options. Even with this enabled it'll probablly be a bit quiet so you really need some kind of 'pre amp'. I use a Four Track recorder to boost levels and it works very well - I use line out not headphone jack of 4Track for much better S/N ratio (less hiss). A guitar amp may give good results (low noise) and even a hifi system could be used to boost that level! Ensure mic input not muted in soundcard audio options obviously. Your card may even have it's own pre amp to boost levels as Creative cards are very good.

Maybe not a drive bay device but a mini disk recorder will act exactly like a tape recorder but provide DIGITAL quality recordings. Again this is simply plugged into your soundcard (line out or possibly optical line out if u have one for better quality recording). If u want to record songs then mini disk or CDR/RW is the way to go. There is also the Zip Drive ofcourse which uses big floppy style disks. This device stores 100MB or much more and can store data/songs etc for backup.

Help! Sound doesn't work because of bad system files!

I have Acid and Soundforge, and I had Gigasampler and it didn't work-so when I went to uninstall it-it took some system files with it(one's that supposedly weren't used by any other programs) then when I rebooted mmtask performed an illegal operation, msgloop.exe and msg32.exe (system files) are not working properly and my sound will not play anymore. I have reset my bios, and deleted my soundcard and let windows reinstall them to no avail. If you have any info on how I can fix my sound I would be most grateful, thanks.

Yes a salutory lesson for sure - don't allow these 'unused by other program' files to be deleted when uninstalling unless you know what each file is/does or can be sure it's related to the app you are dumping.

I'm no expert but if these are sys files then then only way to replace them would be a fresh install of operating system? (did this with Windows 98 SE a while back and none of my music files or personal stuff was touched!) However I just searched for the files and they not on my OS so if u on W98SE then these files are probablly for your soundcard - reinstall soundcard software/drivers if so.

All I have is a regular cd-rom drive, I know of people who have stuff like that, all i want to do is take my songs off napster and put them on a cd, without having to go out and buy seperate things.

There are cd burning programs tha toyu can DL (Nero is one) but you absolutely must have a CD burner (actual piece of hardware either a CD-R or CD-RW DRIVE) to burn any cds. A regular CD-ROM drive will not do it. It does not have the correct laser. No software to do this has ever been made, nor will it ever be made.

I don't know the program but this kind of difficulty is common. You need to look under the programs audio options and ensure that your soundcard is selected for the 'soundout'. You also need to ensure that midi out is enabled and at full volume in your soundcards audio playback options.
