Re: The reason this is a problem is....

Thanks Steve. I think I'll end up buying the audio cd's, but I'm sure someone told me there's a way to format the data cd-r's on a computer burner (which I have; I just don't want the hassle of creating wave files from the record player and then burning them on the computer; life's tooo short...).
BTW I'm a professional jazz musician and think the blank CD copyright fee is kinda dumb; the only guys that will see any $ are the guys that don't need it... rock stars etc

New Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum and an old Tascam 8-track

I'm trying to get some old stuff that I've recorded but not mixed down, onto my machine. The tape is old so I wanna go straight from the 8 track to the computer. The 8 track has stereo outs and the SB has aux ins(stereo)in the front but it won't "hear" the music coming thru. I've gone thru all of the mixer's and controls that came with the card and nothing is muted and everything seems to be correctly selected. I also know that the 8 track and cords are working because I can plug it into my stereo and hear stuff. What am I doing wrong? There's got to be a way to do this rite? Is the headphone jack the way to go? I really want to do it through the stereo outs but.....
Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Re: New Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum and an old Tascam 8-track

What model is the 8 track? What software are you using? I'm doing the same thing using the Tascam 688 midi. The cool thing about the 688 is that it has "tape out" for each of the tracks. So I'm going from the 688 into the Echo Layla 24 and getting all the tracks to cubase. Then mess with the song in the computer. Are you mixing down to the computer? need more info. Then I can help you.

Re: New Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum and an old Tascam 8-track

Heya.. thanks for the reply. It's a 488 and it doesn't have midi outs :( I'm not sure what to do here. I've tried running out of the recorder into a powered mixer and then into the card but to no avail. Are you familiar with the audigy platinum? I just can't believe those two imputs would just be there for decoration but it's beginning to seem that way. Before I even begin to think about mixing it down I'd like to use my cpu as the listening device since I have some really nice speakers..... I just can't get the machine to hear the damn MUSIC arrrrgh! hehe
Thanks again......

Re: New Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum and an old Tascam 8-track

THe Sound blaster cards come with a Creative Mixer. When you installed the sound card, you should have now a Creative Folder in your Programs menu. Go there and find the Creative mixer. Open the mixer, then right click on the top bar. You should see an option that says advanced or Recording options. Click there and then when the mixer opens, click on the icon that says line in recording or stereo recording. Fiddle with the icons here until you find one that works for you. I don't have Audigy but I had the same issue with my own Soundblaster Card. Sometimes it works fine and then for some reason it resets itself to something that you don't want. Hope this helps.
Email me and let me know if it does. I don't check this board too often. :-)

Hi, is this the site for music match jutebox that I was able to get about 6 months ago. I keep trying to find it and your site keeps coming up WHY?????? How do I find Music Match Jutebox?

Re: help

Firstly, it's a jukebox not a jutebox. But you should find it via <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?method=and&format=builtin-long&config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fprograms%2F&exclude=&words=musicmatch">this page</a>.

Music Creator

I am trying to re-record my midi files into audio files and I seem to be missing a step. When I open my volum control under recording and look at line-in I don't have a "Select" option, only a "Mute" option. My sound card is an ESS-MPU 410. I've tried muting everything else except 'line in', but I'm still not able to re-record my midi into audio files. Help!

MIDI to WAV quality

The MIDI from a score editor (Finale 2001) converted
to WAV by Midisyn has a "fuzzy" background noise with it.
Is that due to low level PC speaker resolution? Where can
learn more about the MIDI to CD process? I have Cool Edit Pro LE,
and SB Live card.

....

Could be all sorts of things. The thing to learn about Midi to Wave is that the Midi is controller information only and has no baring on the sounds at all. It will only tell a sound generator when and how to play it's instruments and nothing else.

Therefore, the quality of the sound that become the wave are the sound made by the sound generator itself and is solely related to that generator. If you use a cheap sound cards GM midi-set and expect a lot from the sounds then you maybe fooling yourself. Plug you midi output into a series of sensible synth, samplers and drum machines with some decent sounds selected and mixed and you will have much more chance of acheiving the result you are more than likely looking for...

How to make the Internet more useful for music-talented?

Hello,
I have been playing the piano for 12 years by now,and I still cannot find what to play..I do not want to play those classical music any more,I want to fing help from somewhere that can help me about finding the exact notes of the songs. Is there any site or person on the net that can help me finding how to play these songs exactly?

Re: How to make the Internet more useful for music-talented?

You should be able to find some great Elton John tunes in the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/sheetmusic/">sheet music store</a>. Seriously, it's a good place to start.

help with a minidisc player

HELP ! i bought an MD player, and am trying to download music from sites onto the recorder. i have followed the instructions but still no joy "no signal" is all i get. where so i connect the cable ? from the MD player into ... where on the computer ? yeah i am a complete virgin to this but i need some help ! please someone tell me more ! e mail me on rinser@asia.com
thanks to you

Re: help with a minidisc player

Depends. Using a normal cable, you should run it from the LINE OUT (where you'd normally
connect the loudspeakers) into the RECORD IN on the MD player. Alternatively, you could
use a digital connection (assuming your MD player has a digital line in for recording).

If this doesn't help, post the make and model. I may be able to find out some more info.

Can anyone possibly help?

Hey,
I am a rapper and am looking for a site or a program to help with honing the freestyle/lyrics (coz it isnt easy doing the shit all on your own) even something that throws up random words for me to use for freestyling. anyone got any ideas?, i cant find shit.

Re: Can anyone possibly help?

Yo Low

I'm not sure if there's anything out there to help you. You're going to have to do it the old fashioned way - 1% inspiration 99% perspiration.

That's how writers do it.

Maybe you should take other writers' rhythms and tempos and just stick your own lyrics in to get started.

Converting MIDI files to CD playable files

Our church has several MIDI files that we use during our service. At times we need to use them when there is no computer available, only a CD player. Does anyone know of any software that we could use to convert our MIDI files to a CD playable format? Thanks for your help,

Re: Converting MIDI files to CD playable files

Convert the MIDIs to WAV and then burn them as an audio CD.

<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/TiMidity_win32/">MIDI to WAV</a>
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Nero_win32/">Nero CD Burning software</a>

Hi,

This might not be the best advise, but for beginners
with no musicial expertiese, and if there's no budget
either, I'd go for Modplug Tracker. Its a tracking software
, freeware. It also now accepts VST plug ins. with modplug tracker
you have the internet as your sample base. I am pretty sure you
can GET a police siren sound. If you want to ACTUALLY make
that sound, then I dont know what program u need. You can also
create beats and all. It was my doorway into the computer
music world. It can also export to wave and mp3 or one of them, but then
you can just easily convert and use THAT to put on ur website. Besides modplug tracker, you might wanna
buy FruityLoops, which is another easy music creator software that accepts
ASIO, VST/DXi/MIDI/BUZZ. One way you can
decide for yourself is to go to www.hitsquad.com/smm, check out the
cateogories, download a few freeware, shareware, and demos and test them out
and then buy what u like.

Hope that helps,

dumbest question ever asked

I have a MAC G4 - I have itunes.
I have a CD with music on it.
how do I convert music files from the CD
to HTML
so I can have people on my web site
listen to the music

not dumb, just ill-informed

You can't convert the music files on a CD to HTML, they are completely different file formats, HTML being text based. BUT you can convert them to MP3 or WMA files that can be uploaded to your site so people can listen to them. Check out the <a href="/smm/cat/FORMAT_CONVERTERS/">FORMAT CONVERTERS</a> section on this site for CD to MP3 and WMA converters.

Re: not dumb, just ill-informed

Just make sure that you own the copyright to the music. If the CD
is a commercial recording, then you'll be in breach of copyright. You
may also find your web host will tell you to remove them.

Andy

Re: not dumb, just ill-informed

Also, go to real.com and download Real Producer. You can make real media files with that. It even creates HTML for you and a page that it can upload to your site with the real player embedded in the page so that the person does not have to have one or download it. Hope this helps!!

how toconvert to CD?

The only sound input I have is 1/8 inch headphone jack - I want a program that will break up a cassette into individual tracks and then burn it to a audio cd. I want to do all this by just pressing play on my cassette deck. Any suggestions? What program?...please help!

Hi,

based on your descriptions of your resources and
the desired method. The best thing that I could
think of is to get ur self a wire 1/8 inch in
both ends, connect one end to your 1/8 inch headphone
jack in your cassette player, and the other end to
your computer mic 1/8 input. You can then use
software like cool edit, and all you have to do
is click play on ur cassette player and record
on the software, and it will record it. It'll be better
if you stopped after finishing recording every
track and saving it individually. However you can
record the entire content of your cassette into one
large wave or mp3 file. You can then either split
it manually or use WaveKnife which should split it into
many perfectly cut waves for every track. All you have to
do then is to convert to mp3s and burn away.

Hope that helps,
Hish

Re: how toconvert to CD?

Don't use the MIC IN on your sound card, as it's not designed to take
the sound level you'll get from the headphone socket. Use the LINE IN instead

Andy is right, LINE IN would be more ideal.
