Re: splicing wavs together

I don't trust programs that claim to split tracks up
by looking for the silence between them. Often, as
you've already found out, it can mistake some quiet
parts for track ends and split them.

I use something like Cool Edit to record the whole tape
as a single WAV then split it into individual WAV files
myself. Then I know it's right.

Cubase 5.0 VST (Problem with VST Mixer for Rewire)

Does anyone know how to set up the mixer for a rewire session in Rebirth? It was working before I:
Changed Drivers in Rebirth to an ASIO - Direct X.
I can not figure out how to change this driver in Cubase??? I am guessing that this is the problem of not being able to set up the Mixer in Rebirth --- HOWEVER, when I change the driver back to the original in Rebirth, I still can not get the mixer in Cubase to work - which inturn does not let me establish a "rewire" session to Rebirth! Thx :-) Please respond to meguy@hushmail.com

Old Mac Software

I have an old Mac Performa 550. I'm looking to use it in my studio for sequencing. Are there any programs such as old Cubase or Cakewalk programs that I could use? Where could I find them? What all would I need to get it running?

Re: Old Mac Software

Sounds like an old machine. Go to the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/">Mac Section</a> of the site and take a look around. If in doubt read the systems requirements for the programs or just try em out yourself.

removing crowd noise from live recording?

I want want to remove the sound of the cheering crowd from a live recording. Any help would be great. Thanks

Re: removing crowd noise from live recording?

Pristine Sounds,Dart Pro and Diamond Cut does great job (Cool Edit is a bit slower for this process) that you just select a part at the beginning (where the silence, only crowd noisy sound) and call it "noise-sample" for the audio recording file and it just eliminates the same behaviors for characteristic of the current audio file. That's mostly need what you need :) but sometimes you have to manual edit your file (can use Pristine Sounds for visual editing)

Re: removing crowd noise from live recording?

I'd keep it in there. Reality gets enough manipulation as it is ;)

Turn the volume down....

...during the crowd noise. It's the only way...

v difficult

u can either trim the sound off the end after the mujsic has stopped by loading the track into an audio editor and cutting out the crowd or try EQing the track with a parametric EQ which will allow u to cut the frequency where the noise is heard. Crowd noise may have a wide frequency base so to remove it all may also remove half the song itself! There is no perfect solution and no box of tricks which can do it for u neither so don't ask;)

Yeah, I agree with jon there.
You could maybe try an expander. As this is the opposite of compression, It might push those crowd frequencys down. Just a thought..

D

Impossible...

There is no way you can remove the crowd noise because there is no unique property that separates the crwod from the music. You can't filter it out, since the crowd noise overlaps frequencies used by instruments and singers.

Trying to remove any part of a recording is impossible without affecting what's left behind.

Making music

I wanted to write some music (d&b)... However, I was wondering if I need to buy things like keyboards and samplers when most of this stuff is available on PC's - such as sampler software....

Also, how do I put my music together from these different programs? Is a sequencer the central thing and I import drum loops and things into it. Im really not sure how to make music!

thanks

Re: Making music

Well all I can tell you is I have a soundblasterlive card, a midi keyboard and cubasis vst. What I like about this arrangement is I will use freeware to create parts, load these parts into my souncard as a soundfont and then trigger the sounds by pressing the keys on the keyboard. As you can tell I am not a pro but I can say that triggering the sounds rather than cutting and pasting in the end is a lot more fun, than just cuttig and pasting alone. I do this just for fun, if this is something more serious for you, then you're talking to the wrong person. Good luck!

Re: Making music

Hey Majid
It depends what you really want to do .
If for fun or serious.
I have a lot of softwares that can help you out so contact me and we will go from there.
Peace out

Basically what you have said...

You don't NEED hardware synths and samplers. I prefer having dedicated hardware myself as it has it's own character and using a mouse as the only physical input device into a stretch of music will produce different results from hammering a keyboard, say...

Importing drum loops is something you could do although everyone and his dog is doing it these days and songs are sounding the same, same arrangements, same sounds, same tempos, same vibe.... getting boring...

What you do with a loop is your own business but make it interesting and different otherwise you will be slung on the rubbish pile along with most of the other rubbish out there. If you want to do D&B then you should learn how the rythmn works and program it yourself in a sequencer. You could then use a drum machine program to be triggered by your creation.

In summary, I can't flaw the use of a Midi/Audio sequencer at all as you can do so many things with arrangement and sounds texture as well as import sounds created in different programs. You could invest in some Fruityloop type packages but again, the competition is fierce unless you really take the program off somewhere it didn't know it could go. If you do resort to one of these painting with noises programs, never forget to put something of yourself into it. Whether with your voice or some sounds you have created that are relevent to you. I can't stress enough the perils of missing out yourself in a composition in fovour of sounds like something everyone else has made. Take it slowly at first and build a studio based on requirements as they occur.

God bless

Need audio effect that makes it sound like old vinyl

I really need some sort of program that can generate an effect that makes a song sound old. Or rather the redording to sound old. I used to own a Roland vs-840 and that had an effect that made is sound like a 1940s recording. Does anyone know a program that can do that?

I really need to find a program that can generate an effect that make a song sound like the recording is very old. Like it was made on vinyl in the 40s or something. I used to own a Roland vs-840 and that had an awesome effect that did that. Is there anyone who knows where I can download something that will give me that effect from the internet?

What effect in the VS??

What effect were you thinking of in the VS840?? I have the VS880 and found nothing other than a lofi setting that you may be thinking of. If this is the case, then you could eq the hell out of it and make it a mono track.

Alternatively, do what a professional studio (yes, I know they generally have lots of money...;0) would do and play it through a very old record player and then record that with a mic. I know it might not be easy to find one that works or is affordable but you never know.

Very Stupid Real Audio Question from someone without a clue....

Dear informed computer users,

I have a Mac Power PC 7200/90 with OS 8.0. I cannot download any real player version newer than 5.0. Many, amny files cannot be played with this version. Is there any other program that can play Real Audio files besides real Audio?

Plus, I cannot download windows media player for Mac - I need OS 8.1.....is there any other program that can play these files?

Help!!! Thank,

Clueless gustafh

A very stupid answer then... ;0)

OS 8.1 is sometimes considered to be the most reliable MacOs. My friend still uses a Mac 6200/60 and runs OS8.5 and it seems fine. I doubt I would live for long with the troubled OS8.0.

If the files that RealPlayer is playing are .RA files then it's unlikely that anything else will play them. Sometimes though it will try and play other types of streams that you would rather another, more competent, program can handle.

The problem with programs (companies) like realplayer is they have taken a leaf out of Microsoft's company manual and so tried to attach itself to everything it can so it will then attempt to play every media file when ever it can. I would advise trying to change this and replace with Quicktime or . If you go to "Quicktime Prefences" from within the program itself, if usually allows you to change the MIME settings so when a stream commences, it will try and play those files with Quicktime instead.

WARNING...

If you ever install something like Windows Media player OR Real player and they ask you a question like "Would you like to use RealPlayer/MediaPlayer for internet playback" then think very hard about your answer. If you like the computer the way it is, then always say NO.

Good luck

HELP: FruityLoops with midikeyboard

When i plug my midikeyboard into Fruityloops 3, i have a substantial delay between hitting the keys and actually hearing the sound, how can i solve this?
I do not have this problem with other sequencers or audiowarez.

Re: HELP: FruityLoops with midikeyboard

set down the the buffer length in the menu wave settings. but, there will be always a delay cause fruityloops doesent support asio drivers.

FL 3.30 does support this...

midi

how to convert midi to mp3
so ica play it on the mp3 player

It doesn't work quite as you may expect...

Imagine that you want to make a word processor document into spoken word to put on a CD. You would either need someone to read it out for you and then record that OR get a software program to read it for you and then record that audio.

Converting Midi to Audio is done in the same way as Midi information is only note and controller information to tell a midi device what it should be doing. In that case, you would need to play a synthesizer with the midi file and then record the audio output from that synth. You could get the midi file to play the sounds on a sound card and then route the soundcards output into some sort of recording package but that would depend on your setup.

Source Code

I want to make my own karaoke software, what i need to know the tools or the programing software that is necessary to build the software

I can't burn a CD to save my life!!! help!!!

I have a CD-RW drive and I downloaded several songs which I would like to make into a CD. Everytime I go to create a CD I am told I must have a CD-R drive. Is there a special program I have to install to make a CD using a CD-RW drive? Do I need to buy any special CD's? What could I be doing wrong? I have a HP Pavillion and am trying to use music match jukebox to burn the CD. Any info you could e-mail me would be totally appreciated. Thanx.

Don't quote me on this...

It sounds like MMJB doesn't know you CDRW. It sounds like a question of support more than anything. I would use a CD burning program that claims to support your CDRW a sMMJB might not...

There is burning software in this site,,,,,,, I think... If not, someone might pipe up and offer a suggestions...

Anyone???

need opinions about click track recording

I wonder if anyone can give me some feedback about using a click track for a cd I'll be doing in a few weeks in a studio. I'm an instructor, so there's no problem playing with it. The question I have is that all the music is acoustic (steel string guitar w/vocals and other instruments) and some of them are slow. While I wouldn't object using a click track on the faster stuff, I actually do a little tempo changing in a couple of the slower pieces, and play them more "rubato". Any ideas what the big pros do when it's not "rock" stuff and more steel string with a classical feel?

Thanks.

Priscilla

Slightly confused...

I assume you are a music instructor? The question is a tad confusing though, but I think you want to use a click track that varies in tempo during the track. I can only assume then it's so that the resulting recording can be used for midi tempo matching or something similar. If this is the case, then you will need to set up a tempo map. There are some devices that claim to be able to follow an analogue tempo and convert it to timecode (midi timecode I think) although I doubt they are very reliable with anything other than a constant thumping sound or anything transient and clear.

You could play the tune along with a metronome click to find the base tempo, record the track around that (ommitting it during the slower parts) and then run through a midi sequencers tempo map and adjust the tempo to suit the varying sections whilst listening to the recorded information. I have done this a few times with success although it will demand a good understanding of the sequencer you are using and some time.

A variation on that (that sounds more suitable for this situation) is to find that handy little function on most sequencers that allows you to tap a key along with the tune itself and it will map out the tempo for you! In this case, you could ignore any tempo issues until the track is recorded and then tap that button along with the tempo of the track and by rights, a sympathetic tempo map will have been created. Anything midi file that is playing along with the audio will match the tempo as tapped along with... Nice..!

If you did this before arriving at the studio, then you could get the rest of the band to play along with the tempo track (that could now be a drum sound or kit instead) that was previously created. Doing this in the studio might eat up time although it's worth checking with the studio whether there is anyone there competent enough to midi tempo map for you..

Need help..I've given lots of info!

I play percussion and guitar as well as a few other bits & pieces. I've always wanted to fiddle with electronic manipulation of sound and my instruments but this is pretty difficult in Egypt, with no money!
I have a Compaq Presario 1010 laptop with a half-duplex sound card and about 20Megs of HD space free(if I'm not using the Internet!).
78(!?) questions:

* Do I really need a "sampler" in order to collect sounds for triggering and sequencing? I've been using a mic and the Voyetra WaveRecorder thing that came with the Compaq. Is this inferior to using a "sampler"? How?

*How is LDB as a sequencer?I've been using Little Drummer Boy for sequencing
and having a lot of fun with it but then, I've never even seen a sequencer before! Is there something similar around that would allow me to save my pattern loops as Wave files for free? Music software is not easily available here and when you convert the prices of things like Acid into Egyptian Pounds you get many multiples of monthly salary!

* Mixing loops with beatmatching? I have the free Mixvibes and I use this for both triggering samples and mixing loops although I'm not clear on how to beatmatch with this. It seems a little clunky although I've had some fun with this as well. Is there a program that would help me beatmatch and (maybe mix too?) apart from big expensive monsters?

*Is there anything out there that could help me trigger my samples in RealTime, DJ style over a pattern recorded from LDB(or your reccomended sequencer!) onto my Tascam 4-track? Again for free? (Right now SmartMonkey is looking interesting...isn't there anything a little better?)

Help! If you need more info on my ...Resources and Specs please tell me!!

Feel free to answer in installments or only some questions: I'd be gratefull for anything right now! :)

Thank you in advance!
Nadim

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Briefly...

You don't need a sampler really although they stand the test of time better than synthesizers. I have a 64meg sampler with tons of polyphony and I can't remember when I used it last. The reason for this is most of the audio passages I would use within the sampler are edited on screen in Logic Audio. Although logic is NOT FREE, I have seen versions of the program given away free with an english magazine called "Computer Music". The program in question was Logic fun (emagic). I don't believe it supported instrument plugins and I think it was limited to 8 tracks of audio, but came with effects and basically the same arrange window cut and paste editing style options.

Basically, you could record the audio input on the computer straight into the program as an uncompressed wave/aif file and then edit/copy/paste/pan/fx etc etc to the limit of your computers power. Where you would get hold of this program for free I don't know but it might be worth asking around as it was given away with the magazine. There might be some copies lying around somewhere.

Logic is my view but there maybe many others. One thing is for sure though, if you really have 20MB of Hd space left, then your in for a rocky road if you seriously plan on recording audio. A stereo five minute track (uncompressed) comes to around 45MB so any serious passage length is going to mess with your computers HD drivers.

One last thing, if Acid equates to a few months wages in egypt, then you must have had a couple ofvery lucrative years to be able to afford that Compaq...!

Normalizing audio files

Hey all, I have a question for you. I have a bunch of mp3/wav files which have been recorded at different sound levels. This makes for problems with my burned cds, as I heave to keep raising and lowering the volume. Does anyone know how I can fix the sound level on these files so they are all the same level?

Thanks for any info you can provide.
Richrd

Re: Normalizing audio files

Use "Spin Doctor" this is included in "EASY CD CREATOR" (roxio software)

Re: Normalizing audio files

CDex allows batch conversion of MP3 to WAV. and has the facility
to normalise tracks in the process.

Looking for basic music software package

I am looking for a basic music software that will simple allow me to write inmusic note by note and then listen to the computer play it back with keyboard or organ sound. Any suggestions?

Re: Looking for basic music software package

Try Melody Assistant or its big brother Harmony Assistant. These products are very cheap (€15 for Melody Assistant) and you can do anything that's possible with the more known and expensive softwares on the market.

You also get a free evaluation copy of the program that can do most of the features and if you buy the software you get free updates of all future releases.

I promise you will get all basic demands fulfilled and a lot of other demands as well.

recording 4 tracks simultaneously ???

is it possible to record multiple tracks by using two soundcards? the reason for this question is, i need to record 4 tracks at one time (guitar, bass, vocals, drums) and my theoretical solution was to use two soundcards (2 stereo soundcards = 4 tracks). wich software can handle which soundcards simultaneously?
