Soft Sampling, Triggering, Mixing and Beatmatching

I play percussion and guitar as well as a few other bits & pieces. I've always wanted to fiddle with electronic manipulation of sound and my instruments but this is pretty difficult in Egypt, with no money!
I have a Compaq Presario 1010 laptop with a half-duplex sound card and about 20Megs of HD space free(if I'm not using the Internet!).
78(!?) questions:

* Do I really need a "sampler" in order to collect sounds for triggering and sequencing? I've been using a mic and the Voyetra WaveRecorder thing that came with the Compaq. Is this inferior to using a "sampler"? How?

*How is LDB as a sequencer?I've been using Little Drummer Boy for sequencing
and having a lot of fun with it but then, I've never even seen a sequencer before! Is there something similar around that would allow me to save my pattern loops as Wave files for free? Music software is not easily available here and when you convert the prices of things like Acid into Egyptian Pounds you get many multiples of monthly salary!

* Mixing loops with beatmatching? I have the free Mixvibes and I use this for both triggering samples and mixing loops although I'm not clear on how to beatmatch with this. It seems a little clunky although I've had some fun with this as well. Is there a program that would help me beatmatch and (maybe mix too?) apart from big expensive monsters?

*Is there anything out there that could help me trigger my samples in RealTime, DJ style over a pattern recorded from LDB(or your reccomended sequencer!) onto my Tascam 4-track? Again for free? (Right now SmartMonkey is looking interesting...isn't there anything a little better?)

Help! If you need more info on my ...Resources and Specs please tell me!!

Feel free to answer in installments or only some questions: I'd be gratefull for anything right now! :)

Audio Recording

Is it possible to use Cakewalk Pro 9.0 to record from a cassette player via the computer and then save the file as either a .wav or .mp3 file. If so, what are the procedures and what needs to be installed in the computer? Thank-you in advance for your responses.

It is possible. You need to know cakewalk enough to be able to record an audio track from a given source. Adjust the source so that it is from the audio input on your computer (soundcard).

Connect the cassette player directly to that audio input and if the correct selections are made within cakewalk, you should be able to record that audio as a track and then export (or bounce) it to a two track wave file.

Also, you could check the extensive file area on this website for more simple applications to record audio from a given source. Check it out..

Virtual pitch bender and modulation wheel

Hi, everyone! I have a quite technical MIDI problem but I'll give a go at submitting here; it doesn't cost much and someone out there might know what to do.

I have a synthesizer (Panasonic SX-KC600) connected via MIDI to my computer. This synthesizer doesn't have pitch or modulation wheel, but supports pitch and modulation effects coming from MID files. Does anyone know of some kind of "virtual pitch and modulation" software, that would allow me to use the computer's keyboard (or and on-screen button, whatever) to send modulation and pitch MIDI messages to my synthesizer?

My knowledge of midi goes back a long way but I can't confess to using sysex and midi controller messages very often.

I know though that most if not all sequencers (and other apps) allow you to route and change controller messages (pitch bend/modulation/foot pedal). In this case, something like logic audio allows you to create a fader on screen and allows you to send that information as controller information which means you should be able to adjust that send channel (controllers number) to that of the controller channel for the modulation and pitchbend on the Panasonic synth.

This will work but I can't take you any further on the proceedure... sorry...

It's unfortunate that CD Architect is no longer available. Could anyone tell me what simple software package can make as many tracks as you want from a single wave file? It becomes very exhausting to copy songs from a single wave file and paste them into new seperate files so that you could burn seperate tracks on a CD. Cd Architect had the ability to take a single wave file and from that file you could simply mark where you would like the next track to begin, instead of copying and pasting into new files.

That would depend on the computer platform..

Basically, any application that can output midi (to the midi sport) and import midi files. Check the file area on this board for "Midi players or utilities". Something should be in there...

Which computer platform???

You need an audio editor and it sounds like you might be using a mac. Peak is a fast audio editor although pricey. It comes as an LE version also that wont be that much. There are more than likely some shareware ones and maybe some freebees although I don't use anything other than Peak these days so I am not the best person to ask.

I assume you're talking about putting them back-to-back, and not stacking them on top each other? Stacking them would be a PITA. :)

I'm trying to create some simple but nice, lush, deep and atmospheric sounds for use in tracks i'm making (mostly tech house / house) I've got fruity loops but I need a synth prog that's resonably simple and small to create these sounds not big stupid over the top effect sounds.. any suggestions on what software?

All new platforms (laptops and desktops)
are now pre-installed with XP.
I think the question makes sense !!!

But i only found rumours :

TR-Rack midi-device trigger

I am unable to transmit midi start/continue/stop clock information to the drum machine via the TR-RACK using the host cable from the laptop.
When I use the midi cable connection to the TR-Rack from my desktop machine I have no problems, but if I copy the work file (cakewalk) onto the laptop and use the host cable to the TR-Rack it does'nt trigger the drum machine.
Is it possible to trigger another midi device from the Tr-Rack via the host cable? And if so, how do I do it?

midi filter not there

I have been downloading midi's to play off line for quite some time and all of the sudden I get a thing that says there are no filters to render the stream. I have deleted Media Player and redownloaded a new version. Same thing. I have tried other free shareware and M. S. programs and nothing will play these darn midis. Any help out there on this?
