DVD Burning!!!
Is there anything special I need to do or know in order to burn and playback a burned DVD movie??? Does the DVD player need a chip or whatnot to play a burned movie?? Can you even burn a DVD movie??? HELP!!!
you can but...
it's tricky. I know that the top if the range Mac G4 comes with a superdrive that can make DVD's that are playable on an DVD player although I think it can only send to one layer at a time. This means that burning DVD movies means that you would have to address each layer individually as it will only record an hour of movie footage (I think). DVD ram is good for backup although I don't think it's any good for DVD movies... but hey, don't quote me on that... Check out some DVD forums

Re: you can but...
Simple. Its as easy as learing 123 or abc. Just steal it from Best Buy, Target or some other store. Or simply buy it. Its that easy. Why waste hours burning a dvd.
How to use MTC ???
I just finished an arrangement using 16 midi tracks in Logic Audio from Emagic, of course the sound in synch, then I recorded each track in this sequencer as audio (wav file) to mix then in Sonic Foundry Vegas because I wanted to add some effects, volume envelopes and filters, etc., then I opened all of 16 tracks in Vegas, but they werent synchronized, Im using a Soundblaster Platinum Live, how can I synchronize this tracks ?. Do I need the MTC and if I need it whats the way to use it. Thanks in advance,
Pedro
Slightly confused but...
I lost you a little at the "then I recorded each track in this sequencer as audio (wav file) to mix then in Sonic Foundry Vegas because I wanted to add some effects, volume envelopes and filters, etc"
If you need to add effects to the individual tracks and don't want to use the Logic effects (get into them, they are very good on an engineering level..!) then the best thing to do is to locate the actual audio files on your HD associated with the tracks you want to add effects to and load them into the effects application.
Logic knows where the audio files are when it opens a song and refers to them when you play. The great thing about this is you can actually alter the audio files by loading them into another application and changing them. When you have finished editing the audio files then save them as is, (don't change the file names or location) and when you go back to the song in logic, it will sit there and draw the new graphical waves and play the tracks as normal but refering to the new audio files. Does that make sense??
This of course relies on the fact that you are happy editing the tracks individually rather than as a multitrack session.
MTC stands for midi time code and is just that. If you have an external hardware device that can send/receive MTC, then you can sync that to your computer. I have a VS880 HD recorder that I sync to Logic Audio. When I play a song in logic, the VS will follow the song accurately, rewinding and fast forwarding accordingly. I suspect the fact that your tracks don't line up in foundary might be something to do with the fact that the audio files have a recording start point that isn't equal. What I mean is, you may have started recording the tracks at different times. I tend to record tracks by pressing play and then pressing record just before the performance information. If I pressed record at the same time for every recorded track, then the tracks would more than likely start at the same time in any multitrack environment.
Hope this helps

ide cdrom
do you know whitch pins are responsable to make one music cd play and pause,
foward, rewind, eject??? i want to control cd-rom from the exterior. i think
i had to input a voltage in some pins. do you know something about this? can
you help me?
Re: ide cdrom
You can't operate the CD-ROM this way. The commands which operate the CD aren't simply voltages applied to pins. Commands are sent through the data bus and the CD-ROM's firmware interprets them.

midi capture
I am using MusicTime Deluxe (windows) and would like to be able to capture the midi output and then convert it to a wav. format or something equivalent to record to a CD.
Cool Edit Pro will do that, but I'm not ready to pay $400.
Anyone know of any other options?
Thanks.
Eric
Re: midi capture
Why don't you register the software instead? It'll be easier in the long run.

Re: midi capture
Saying that Cooledit pro or any other program will convert your MIDI files into Wav files is the biggest mistake and misconception people do.
You cannot hear MIDI. Because it's not a sound is a data/ info about how you play a note.
However what you're hearing is the sound module a MIDI info has been sent to.
So the easiet way is to run a cable from the output of your soundcard and then back into the input of sound card and just recor the result.
Make sure you don't monitor at the same time it will create a feed back.
Even the windows ugly recorder will do that.
Another to do that, if your soundcard will allow it ( like the SBlive! does) is an internal routing of the midisynht to the wav output.
Thus when you record you're actually recording you're midi tracks.
You can pay a million dollars on a software if you confuse MIDI and Wav you won't get any results.
Also if you need a audio Editor to edit your wav files there's a lot of freeware out there that will do a great job or shareware for a very little amount of money unless you really wanna get professional about it.
You should tell us what soundcard you're using, that could give some ideas of how to set it up.

Need help marking my dance mixes into tracks.
I'm having serious problems finding an easy way to insert cues/ track markers into my mixed .wav files (dance mixes). All I want to do is break up my continuous 60+ minutes sets into a normal cd format with tracks (but no sound gaps between tracks). Any help would be great.

Can anybody please help me get this layout right in Finale 2001?
I really need some help with Finale 2001.
I have created a choral arrangement of a hymn (I split it into 4 staves). Everything works great, playback is great. However, each page has the staves separated differently. To explain: On the 1st page there is a nice 1" or so gap between the 1st set of 4 staves and the 2nd set (2 to a page). On the 2nd page there is a huge 3" or 4" gap. On both the 3rd and 4th pages they are too close together.
I have tried to move them closer together using various tools, but not without severly damaging the rest of the piece.
Please download this file and look at it, it will make more sense:
http://www.geocities.com/unibodyford/greenhill.zip
(zipped with WinZip 8.0)
Like I said, everything else is great. Just that visually, it looks sloppy.
Anybody have a minute to take a look?
Thanks,
Dan
Software for download recordings
Dear Sir/Madam,
I currently have a Dell Windows 98 with a TBS Montego II Sound Blaster Pro Emulation Multimedia card. I am trying to download music from an old turntable that has a connection in the back called "REC OUT" (right and left jacks. I have connected those plug in's to the "Line In" plug in on the back of the computer. I then went to Music match trying to download music to computer following there instructions. Nothing happened. I have been told I need a software package to accomplish this. Can you help me??
Re: Software for download recordings
I know you can record with MusicMatch but I've never tried it. In any case, you often need to clean up and edit your recordings once you've got them on the hard drive. I use an audio editor to do this. Try Cool Edit 2000.

Reduction Of Noise After converting Tape Songs to Wav Files
I am using AIPL Singulator to convert all my songs on Cassettes to .Wav files. But the problem is that there is a noise I get in the songs. I would appreciate if somebody can tell me how to get rid of the noise.

: I am using AIPL Singulator to convert all my songs on Cassettes to .Wav files. But the problem is that there is a noise I get in the songs. I would appreciate if somebody can tell me how to get rid of the noise.
If the noise is f the typical hiss-noise (high frequencies) that is related to cassettes, I would recommend the use of a denoise-program called: DePopper version 2. It is not very fast, but extremely effective in reduction of noisy WAV-files.
You can download a sharewareversion at http://download.cnet.com/
What sort of noise...
Describe the noise itself.... is it a buzzing noise or is it the standard hiss that you get with the archaic music cassette.
If it's a hissing noise, then it is more than likely the aged cassette format that is riddled with noise problems. Were the tapes encoded with Dolby of any sort, do you have the dolby selected in on the cassette machine??? Like lisa said, use one of the noise reduction facilities on one of the new audio editors. They are quite amazing. You basically select a section of the noise from the audio material and then the program tries to eliminate that noise without detracting from the material itself.
If it is a buzzing noise then you may have an earth loop. Check the the plug on the cassette machine has an earth connected to the power plug. Keep your leads short and don't use cheap leads. So many people will spend a ton of money on musical hardware and then use cheap and cheesy leads. You have been warned....!

Re: Reduction Of Noise After converting Tape Songs to Wav Files
First of all, try to find out where the noise may be coming from. Something like a twisted lead or dirty input port can make things a bit ugly. If you're finding that you don't get this noise when working solely on the PC, there's a good chance it's a physical problem and not a software one.
I use Cool Edit 2000 with the audio clean-up plug-in. It's pretty effective.

Logic/Keyboard talk
Can you help with this?
I've been using Micrologic, and I've just bought Logic Gold and get the same problem. I write by choosing instruments and then inputting the score by notation; then in the Mixer adjust volume, reverb and chorus depth. Save everything and close.
Going back to that file later, the file remembers all the settings - instruments, mixing etc - but it doesn't 'tell' the keyboard. So the keyboard will play whatever instruments the previous file was using, until I actually click on each track in the Arrange window. At this point the keyboard 'remembers' and plays the right instrument. But all the mixing is still wrong. So I have to go back into the Mixing window, and 'touch' each setting: the settings are still there, but the keyboard just doesn't 'read' them until I 'remind' it by simply clicking on each setting.
The chaps at music stores all tell me I need to click on Prg, Vol, and Pan in the left-hand-side menus - but this doesn't help. In fact, with Gold it seems to be worse: now it starts reading the piano part as a drum-kit and I need to turn the keyboard off and back on again for it to stop doing it.
I figure it has to be the keyboard. It's pretty basic: a Yamaha PSR 270 but it does have general Midi. One thing I've noticed though: while the order of the instruments is the same (on the keyboard and on each software - because all are GM) scrolling up through the voices on the keyboard gives a completely unpredictable response on the computer screen: Logic just seems to pick any old instrument, without rhyme or reason. What's happening?
Jeff.
Re: Logic/Keyboard talk
I'm not a Logic user but I have had this problem with other sequencer programs. I've found that even though you choose your instruments for each track, if you go away and do something else and then come back to it, the instruments pull the old switcheroo on you.
The reason for this is that the place you've been choosing the instruments from probably doesn't make any permenant changes to the file. Usually midi sequencers have a section devoted to controller data. The particular controller you need is called "program change." See if you can find a program change section for each track and insert the proper instrument program. This will put a little blip of midi data right on the track that will tell it what instrument to play.
Hmmm...
I am a logic user but do things differently to you. I always save my performances in my keyboards and load them up specifically for the song that I have loaded into Logic. The reality is, Logic needs to send the instrument definitions to the yamaha on loading the song although it's unlikely that it will do this without prompting. Make sure the 'receive program change' and 'receive GM' is switched on within the PSR. Check that the midi filtering within Logic isn't supressed. You can dump the preformance information into logic as a track although, like I say, I don't travel those roads anymore.
I used to dump my old soundcanvas information to a Alesis MMT8 (those were the days..!) by recording the information as a midi exclusive dump from the sounds canvas. When I played the song, I would play the dumped track and the soundcanvas would change all it's patches before the song started.
Not very helpful but just to let you know that someone is there...
Steve....R
Re: Hmmm...
Thanks Steve. I guess part of the problem is that (1) I work from notation rather than performance based (which isn't a 'problem' but probably gets in the way of things, here); and (2) the keyboard is pretty basic.
Not to worry. The next step is to get the song right - and then write to CD for a finished version.
Thanks again for replying,
Jeff.

avi sound
Hello everybody!
Does anybody know how to seperate sound and video in a avi clip?
Re: avi sound
Something like Vegas Video will do that. It really depends what you want to do after you've seperated sound/image. If you just want the sound, something like Total Recorder will do just fine.

if you have netscape you can copy it by right clicking and doing select all and then paste it into your webpage making program and it should do it or in nescape find your cache folder and anything in flash should be there.
avi speed
Hello!! :)
I would be glad if you could help me with this problem.
I am using the avi framerate changer 1.01 and other programs to change the speed of some movie clips.
It works ok but when i put them in powerpoint and i have decreased framerate it is much smaller then the original.
The lower framerate the shorter the film will be.
Strange!
If i look at the film and dont put it in power point its ok. Its going slower and the whole film is there.
It is only when i put it in as a movie in power point it gets shorter.
Do i have to convert the clip into some other format before changing speed or remove sound or something?
Will be glad for some support about this. :)
Advise....
I don't have a solution to your problem although it suggests that it has something to do with Powerpoint. I sounds like powerpoint is taking the timed length of the movie rather than playing all the frames.
I suggest you find yourself a powerpoint forum as the likelyhood that someone here will be able to assist you fully maybe unlikely, although it's always worth a try...!
Good luck though

Jason,
It's amazing how truly ignorant people are when it comes to intellectual property rights. Your are an excellent example. I won't bore you with the inter-relationship between corperate/comercial, internet and intellectual property law. From your facist tone I doubt you have the capacities to appreciate the argument. Justin has done nothing wrong, he is simply participating in the free and open exchange of information. As he is using the information sought for personal use, and not for reproduction or resale, he has not infringed on anyone's intellecutal property rights, namely, copyright protection.
