Ignore Previous arguments

TDM systems offload FX processing to TDM Farm Cards and run the result through MixPlus Cards. All Card-Based processing to lighten the CPU load, but prodcuts are limited and so are input boxes.

Mac has moved towards the non-PCI based g4: Firewire-only audio inputs, External drives, external SCSI hardware, all of which is not good for audio production. The latency is bad, the ability to offload CPU porcessing onto cards is bad, Number of simultaneous inputs is not adequate for multitrack recordng. Bonus is G4 parallel processing.

Wn98 SE is stable, fast, and you can custom build your computer. you can use internal SCSI bus devices (up to 100 or so on the same bus), multiple input boxes/card combinations, and CPU speed is increasing faster than Apple products. I run 3 harddrives and 2 soundcards in my computer, all internal, 1 is an internal SCSI drive (up to 100-track simultaneous recording/playback) and i have a card-based SCSI port for accessing samplers etc. Plus you have dual monitor support, dual processor support, and a whole lot of software devlopers making cheap, effective products (software and hardware).

You must be joking... surely

Be careful giving out false information. This has nothing to do with what system is better or worse, it's personal taste and experience. What you are saying is untrue. G4's come a few PCI slots and a choice of Standard audio input, PCI card, USB OR Firewire. The latency on Macs has always been very good and therefore the choice of most professional studios. Creamware cards where made on the mac first and they don't have any CPU offload problems.

There is "nothing" above that the mac can't do, you make it sound like SCSI is something that PC's do? up until a few years ago, mac came only with SCSI drives as standard. Also, that processor comment is a little hard to bare... Anyone that thinks a system of any descriptions productivity and speed is judged on it's processor is missing the point by a mile, apart from the fact that RISC processors have always been ahead in speed over Intel. Win 98 is hardly fast and stable a system and the fact that people do make their own computer and the poor operating system has to work out what's what, is the main bug bear of the Windows compatible computer. It's hardly a selling point..

If you make comments to people that maybe parting with a lot of their own money, do them the credit of offering them the advice they need rather than rather than falsifying the truth to make you feel that you have made the right purchase.

sounds like you got a very nice setup there!
hmm..yup 98SE is pretty cool. thanks for your feedback!

Re:

You think that if you were an owner of a Digi Design TDM system (I'm not either), you would give a pluck about if under the table there's a PC or a Mac?

Re:Digidesign TDM System

I am familiar with DigiDesign and some of their products (Pro Tools, and some of their Audio Cards), but i am not sure of this TDM system.
But it sounds good!!!!! :)

The buzz is that Windows 98 is the best version for pc recording. I'm not sure what the reasons are but I've heard that from many people.

thanks coolguy

thanks for your response cool guy.
Thats what i have heard aswell, but then again some think win2k? hmm..

Windows 2000 was designed for business applications. One big problem is a lot of audio hardware and software manufacturers don't provide support for 2000.

Re: thanks coolguy, and WinME?

Thats true, hmm..what do you think about ME? minus that annoying System restore. what do you think of that as a Suitable OS?

Re: WHICH IS BEST OS FOR MUSIC CREATION FOR PC

I'd love a Mac so I can get into video art. But I'm quite happy with my PC. There's a lot more software to choose from and that, in itself, gives me more options.

Thanks Lisa for the quick response, but...

...hehe i was wondering what was the best Operating System to create music with on the PC.
Like win98, Me or 2000? even 95? and stability / compatibility issues people have.

But i agree, i would like a Mac..its so Multimedia hehe..and the Finbal Cut thing that come with the later Gx machines look mighty tasty! :)

PS. Sorry for the Caps...

Software that tranposes already printed (sheet) music

I am at the beginning of my search for music software that transposes an already printed piece of music - as in I have a sheet music for a song in F and I want it transposed into G. Do all music notation softwares do this? It's difficult to understand when the advertising says the software transposes if it means it just transposes what you've written or can it scan in sheet music and let you transpose that sheet music. What are the system requirements besides a scanner? Any suggestions as to the best software to buy or try via a free download -- and the most reasonable? Thanks.

Re:

It's called
Sharpeye OCR v1.21
You scan the sheet music, the program loads the picture and save it as a midi file. You can then make changes with any midi application...

how do u convert CDA files into WAV or MP3?

hi,

im having troubles. i only have a one cd tray deal, and a CD-RW burner is in it, and one of my friends wanted to know if i could burn him a copy of a cd, but i put the cd in and its in CDA and its read-only, and it doesnt even play in winamp. so how do i convert it back into wav or mp3?

Re: how do u convert CDA files into WAV or MP3?

: hi,

I use "MusicMatch Jukebox to do my conversions, and it works fine. You can also use it the other way as well.

Re:

You need a Digital Audio Extraction (DAE) program, to make the .CDA files into .WAV,(most CD Copier programs have it as an extra option). Convert it to anything you like, but remember that you can only put .WAVs in a CD copier's window to make an audio CD (always use the option Disk At Once [DAO] to make sure all CD players will play the CD)...

Re:

DAE....cant find it..i have adaptec cd wizard and its not in there so what should i do now?

WMA Encoder/Decoder will do the job. Record the CD as WMA (Windows Media Files) then convert them to WAV using WMA.

why not make them to .ra then to .ogg then to .wma
and then to wav ??

ReDownloading

I purchased and successfully downloaded the RioPort Audio Manager, and I love it. Unfortunately, I had to use a manufacturers quick restore disk, and I lost the blooming thing. Therefore I need to reinstal the software on my machine. Please e-mail me a site at which I can re-obtain my software. Thank You Very Much.

ID Tagging from LP Collection to MP3s

I am converting my LP collection to MP3 CD-R. Most of my LP artist/title info can be downloaded manually from CDDB. Is there a procedure and/or program that would be suitable for AUTOMATICALLY creating the ID Tags in the MP3 files? Ideally, it would be nice if I could drag/drop or cut/paste ALL of the titles to the ID3 tags at once. Any suggestions? TIA.

Latency

I am running Cubase VST 5.0, Using creative labs
Sound Blaster 256 and 128 (two soundcards)I have a
Latency of 57 mill what will solve this problem.
Im using win.98 my computer has 1000 mhz prosseser
512mb

Soundcard vs PC architecture...

If you buy a new computer at any time, make sure it's suited to audio work. Lots of people don't realise that windows compatible machines come in all shapes and sizes and no two are likely the same. Combine this with a bunch of sometimes incompatible add on devices such as sound cards and graphics cards, and you have a machine that may excel in some areas and not in others.

The likelyhood is (after the above rant) is that you should get yourself a decent pro "Audio Card". Don't expect much out of most saoundblaster cards, they are not necessarily made for low latency.

Steve...R

Re:

Every soundcard has its own latency, If you got a very fast CPU it helps, but not solves the problem.
EGOSYS Wami Rack 24 ($570 4 ins 8 outs + 4 midi ins & 4 outs) goes down at 6 ms (inaudible unless you're Iron Man).
Expect a multi input (8 or more audio) card with low latency to start at $1000 (Digi 001)...

Gracias. Pedro.

Volume control

Help, how can I control volume while recording so CD has same volume when playing ?

Re:

If you mean you want to Normalise (0db) the entire CD use wavelab. If you mean between tracks volume difference, you must use Wavelab, Global Analysis, pick average RMS power of every song and use change gain to make them equal.

Before everything else, normalise all the tracks, select the smaller average RMS power & bring everything to it (or else face the distortion)

How can I change Casio csg files to midi files?

Is there a free program that would enable me to change Casio csg files to midi files, as I only have an old portable computer that is I can't connect to the keyboard. The keyboard has a floppy drive so I can take the csg files to the keyboard but cant play them wthout changing the format. How can I?

Need pitch control software

Would like to change pitch on a WAV file while
playing the tune (along with my guitar) and then
to save it on disk?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re:

I Have heard something like this on hardware samplers (Eventide 9000, throw music & your live guitar input & then pitchbend by foot) but nothing on software, sorry dude...

need help choosing processor for new music comp

i'm about to get a totally new upgrade from my last computer for making music. i'll be running logic audio for sequencing, given the budget i have, i'm looking at a system with an amd athlon 800 but can stretch to something else if i really need to, does anyone have any comments or advice?

HEY WAIT !

Regardless of how unintensive audio sequencing is, recall that realtime rendering IS CPU intensive: Software synths and FX take up a lot of CPU power. And remember that Running multiple applications requires a good multi-path chip. If you want to run Logic, ESX24 AND Gigasampler/Rebirth/Reason/all your plugins, you will need a substantial chip. Don't overlook Intel, and don't buy a budget chip even if it's fast if it is only a serial processor.

Re: need help choosing processor for new music comp

Since audio sequencing isn't particularly processor-intensive, the Athlon 800 should be fine. More important is RAM and hard-disc space. I've an Athlon 1.33GHz with 256MB of RAM and an 80GB hard disc and it copes with everything I throw at it.

Just don't buy Intel.....

Andy

question modification

doh! fool that i am, i said athlon when i meant duron (i can't keep up with the changes anymore!). further comments are welcome.

andy - i'm curious about how many effects you've managed to get it to do before it starts suffering a little? i'll be using stuff like eq and compressor on most channels, a few reverbs, lp filters etc.

best vst sound card

can anyone tell me what is the best soundcard to use with vst3553

Re:

In the past there were cards with female names (like Gina & so on), but now my favorites are: Low budget: EGOSYS Wami Rack 24 $570, (see lisa topic for more), Digi Toolbox XP (see Digi Design site)
Big budget : Digi Design TDM Systems ($10,000 a piece - multiple systems can be connected for hundreds of channels)

Really? have the police been informed yet? do you have some kind of insurance? was it maybe one of the employees at your workplace? maybe it would be easier to try and get it back, or go to Propellerheads and let them know.

MIDI sample dump standard frustration...please help!!

big frustration getting my SU10 to talk to peak 2.1 in an imac via USB midisport 2x2...i'm trying to use MIDI sample dump standard which is OK for the SU10 and fine with peak but errr something goes wrong...i think it might be to do with my OMS studio set up or little midisport...not sure...i've even got all the sysex IDs matching (sampler, studio set up and software)...so what does it want already??! maybe it's the USB??? i visited bias-inc.com and downloaded the USB floppy enabler they suggested but no joy

if anyone can enlighten me a tiny bit about why the samples won't transfer i would be eternally endebted! i'm a novice so speak slowly/assume relative ignorance...

here's wot i got:
yamaha SU10 sampler
midi cables
midiman USB midisport 2x2
peak 2.1 or D-soundPRO 3.5.1 (both of which time out when i try to send a sample to the computer)
OMS studio set up (that seems to pass its own tests!)
imac DV-SE (128mb) running with OS9

so if anyone can advise me i would jump for joy and send 1000 thanks
yours tearing my hair out!!

Peak...

What part of peak are you using to send or receive Midi dump information???

Re: Peak...

hello steve
thanks for your reply..in peak (2.1) i'm going to the 'samplers' on the menu bar at the top and then i choose MIDI SDS and try to transfer a sample from my SU10 via the USB midisport (with the appropriate sysex ID in the dialog box)..but the transmission times out...i've also tried to do a MIDI SDS with D-SoundPRO 3.5.1 and a similar thing has happened..i'm beginning to this it's maybe my OMS studio set up...
any advice gratefully received
thanks!

Re: Peak...

I do use Peak for editing and sample transfer via SMDI (SCSI transfer) to my Yamaha EX5r and it works a treat. I can't say that I have ever sample dumped over midi though and up to this point wasn't aware that peak has the facility to dump via Midi..

I have the USB midi Sport 2 x 2 running from a Mac G4 and the studio setup was quite simple. It sort of did it for me. How did you do yours and did you name the ports correctly in your studio setup so they are easily understandable from within applications?

I assume also that you have tested the midi ports so you know that a midi connection is working between the computer and the sampler??

I have just had a look at the SDS in peak and it looks straight forward enough. If you have selected SDS and then selected the correct port on the midi sport... (it does say Midi sport as an option although you should select the specific Midi output you want to send from rather than Midi sport itself. It may work anyway but it's best to know that you are sending out of one specific port that you 'know' has the midi leads connected in the right places). If you have used the same port that you are selecting to transfer SDS in a midi program such as a Multitracker like Cubase/Logic and it worked, I can't see that it would be your OMS setup.

Hmmmm.... Don't know what else to say other than name your Midi sport ports to the name of the first midi device in that chain (OMS setup), it makes it easier to remember which chain you are sending and receiving midi from. Try SDS again and remember to select the Midi sports correct port rather than the midi sport itself.

Keep the faith...
