Re: Cool Edit 2000 vs. Pro
: What's the difference between Cool Edit 2000 and Coll Edit Pro?
Pro has up to 64 tracks of multitrack,2000 offers an optional Studio plugin with, I think, 4 stereo tracks. Pro has more complete set of effects, many are available as options on 2000. More complete information on their website www.Syntrillium.com

digital desks
i'm going to expand my measly set-up with a digital desk, and was thinking of the roland vs2480. does anyone have any opinions on it vs. say the new korgs/yamaha/akai desks? is it worth that extra cash money?
i need it as a surrogate, more tactile computer for my own stuff, as well as for recording a live band.
thank y'all kindly.

OH Yeah,........!
I've got the Roland VS2480, and it blows everything out of the water. The sound quality is brutal, and the effects rock,.........VGA output is also super-cool. I haven't ran into one thing I haven't liked about it yet,......and it's very expandable. I checked all the specs out and compared to others before buying,....it's tops.

OK for live i say you better take the YAMAHA aw4416 at home you must have the roland vs2480 why?
I use the yamaha aw4416 in our band always recording and mixing our performances it's easy and you can see al the settings very easy and quick. in my own house i use the roland vs 2480 and i am very very happy with it because you can edit very easy the VGA option is great and becomes even greater in version2 (free for users who have version 1) in version 2 you can see the waves and edit the waves in your VGA monitor, ENz enz. WHATS DA BEST CAKEWALK OR PRO TOOLS?
VOTE NOW!
What is better for a windows based system, CakeWalk or Pro Tools, WHY DO YOU THINK SO?
Re: WHATS DA BEST CAKEWALK OR PRO TOOLS?
These comments are obviously outdated but still here. So, I will update them. Pro Tools does what it says but is only for rich people who burn money. Cubase has nothing on Cakewalk Sonar. I have experienced this personally and tried them all. I stuck with Sonar because of the cost and performance. It has done well in helping me take an idea and make it into a commercial quality master. It has many features that Cubase does not have. Cool Edit Pro will fade out eventually in my opinion because it cannot beat Cakewalk. Let's face it, Cakewalk has been in the business the longest and was created specifically for Windows.
Re: WHATS DA BEST CAKEWALK OR PRO TOOLS?

: What is better for a windows based system, CakeWalk or Pro Tools, WHY DO YOU THINK SO?
:
Pro Tools was originally designed for the Mac and continues to perform better in that enviroment. The two best programs for Windows, in my opinion would be Logic Audio and Cool Edit Pro.
Re: WHATS DA BEST CAKEWALK OR PRO TOOLS?
Cakewalk is , in my opinion. You get more bang for your buck, higher compatibility, and great ease of use. Well that is if you are running cakewalk pro or sonar. See, all cakewalk programs are basically the same engine in different cars, some have more features, others might as well be demos for the bigger programs. that aside, I have used cakewalk for a couple years now, and have also tinkered with pro tools. Digidesign is very proprietary and watered down with technical "bells and whistles" that make it a slow, and tedious program. Cakewalk has the advantage of low cost direct x plugins, and, if you have a VST to DX converter, the option for those too. Pro Tools uses ultra pricey RTAS< AS< and TDM plugins. You could build a top of the line Cakewalk system with SONAR XL, an Echo or M Audio (or whatever you prefer) soundcard, load it with plugins, all for less that $3000 and THAT IS including the COMPUTER! Thats with unlimited track count! To get 64 tracks of Pro Tools you'll spend well over $10,000. But of course, money isnt everything . There is quality. And in terms of DAWs , your bitrate and sample-rate are critical. Cakewalk will handle anything your soundcard can, up to 32 bit and 96khz... it doesnt get any better than that. But thats just my opinion.
Re: WHATS DA BEST CAKEWALK OR PRO TOOLS?
Cakewalk is not that great.
The best is Pro Tools, the problem is that it is very very expensive, so the next alternative is Cubase or Logic. I am keener on Cubase, but they are both very good.
Cakewalk is only really used by Americans that for some reason are fixated with the program.
Re: WHATS DA BEST CAKEWALK OR PRO TOOLS?
Don't be foolish, Cakewalk is on the extreme low end for professional audio. You couldn't possibly run as many effects, automation, surround sound, editing, virtual instrument support, or sound quality with cakewalk as you can with digi. It wasn't until sonar that cakewalk recognized that automation, automatable plug-ins, and virtual instruments were a large part of what home musicians are looking for.
The biggest thing here is that you need specific 32bit floating point mathmatics to really percieve functionality and quality of sound, cakewalks previous versions litteraly just drop bits when you move a volume fader or pan. This is horrible for sound quality and has to do with the way the sound is handled by the software. Programs like cooledit and cakewalk are just cheese programs for cheapies who don't read specs. The cool programs are like nuendo/cubase, logic 5, motu digital performer, even vegas is cool for just audio editing. These multitrack standards have set the bar on what programs can do and other than nuendo, they are not much more than sonar or pro 9. And because of asio and vst sandards you can get a fast machine with a good sound card with asio drivers, lay out cash for tc power core or a ua card designed to give dsp power and have a system better than a digi setup for way less money roughly 3500-4000 than the digi's 10000-15000 setup.
little inquiry

Reaktor
I am an industrial rock musician and I stumbled accross the program REAKTOR on the web. It really looks like the program may do some good for my meager midi studio if I understand what it does. My question is, can someone give me a dirt simple overview of what it is (Their description was quite complicated and I want to make sure I understand it).
I also noticed that it says it's MIDI compatable. Is it possible to run it using Cakewalk from inside the same PC along with the rest of my real midi instruments ?
Thanks

Any software available to correct audio level variances for each
The CDs that I record vary too much in volume from one song to the next. Are there any programs that will automatically compensate for that without really compressing the sound? Maybe something that will calibrate the peaks of each song to a preset level, and not affect (too much) the dynamic range? I`m talking about recording audio CDs,not MP3 discs.Thanks.

Try Audiograbber or Goldwave,both free
Re: Any software available to correct audio level variances for
What you are describing is known as 'normalizing' and is now supported by many of the latest versions of CD burning programs that you will find <a href="/smm/cat/CD_BURNERS/">here</a> on SMM. Just look in the feature list for 'normalizing'.
The following support it:
<a href="/smm/programs/TuneSpark/">TuneSpark CD Maker</a>
<a href="/smm/programs/Nero_win32/">Nero Burning ROM</a>
<a href="/smm/programs/AudioCDMP3Studio/">AudioCD MP3 Studio 2000</a> and plenty more.

Re: Any software available to correct audio level variances for
I have what I think is a related problem: I have some tapes that I'd like to convert to CD, but they have very low volume levels in some parts that are almost impossible to hear in even a moderately noisy environment unless I crank the volume so loud that the loud parts are unbearable.
Can you recommend some (preferrably cheap) software that will allow me to raise the volume of the soft parts without affecting the volume of the loud parts?
I have no need for a full suite of studio controls, other than this one.

Re: what is the best program for making beats(techno)
Hey, Ive been using FLoops for about 7 years for hip hop. Since you are looking to make techno FL is a really good choice because allot of the sounds bundled are techno/house based. As well as it beeing next to free ;) its a good way to start learning how to sample as well as sequence. Try it.

Well paul,
you can save you acid files as wav. files.
If you put you Acid files in C:program files/sonic foundry 2.o, or what ever version you may have or directory you save you wav. file in.
You can open the wav file as a track in a new acd
file, take the 13 acd file you have make them wav. files and open them in acid. cut and paste as you will and presto.
audio conversion apps
Does anyone out there know of a program which
(definitely) will convert .mov (audio tracks
from Premiere) and .au sound files to .wav
files?
If so please let me know A.S.A.P. as this is
currently an issue for me.
Re: audio conversion apps
Just capture the audio using a program like <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/TotalRecorder/">Total recorder</a>.

putting midi files into nokia phone
i have alot of sound files for cell phones stored on my hd and would like to find out how to transfer them to my phone(nokia8210 and 6210) and where i can find the software(preferably free) to do this. can anybody help?!?
Re: putting midi files into nokia phone
Nokia PC Composer.
Using Nokia PC Composer, which is include with the Datasuite software, you can convert a midi file to ringtone format and send it to the phone. The transfer method is either via cable or infrared depending on which one is currently selected in Datasuite. When the phone receives the new tone, Ringing tone received will be displayed. You can then Playback, Discard or Save It. The new tone will be stored to location 36 as NokiaTune, unless you have named it in Composer. To use it, select Profiles/Choose one of the profiles/Personalise/Ringing tone, MENU 3-1-2-2-36 in the 6110 for the General profile.

The best music editor?
Gimme your opinion which is the best software to edit music: Sound Forge5, WaveLab, Cool Edit 2000, Pristine Sounds 2000 or..?
Re: The best music editor?
From this programs I think that Cool Edit 2000 is the best, but the best of all is a not mentioned program, and that is.
LOGIC AUDIO PLATINUM 4
Re: The best music editor?
I like <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Cool_Edit_2k/">Cool Edit 2000</a> because it does a lot more than <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SoundForge_5/">Sound Forge 5</a> (for the price).

Re: The best music editor?
Having both Cool Edit 2000 and SoundForge5, I have to give my preference 90% of the time to Soundforge. Cool Edit has some elements I still utilize, the presets for vocal compressor I haven't found an equal to in soundforge, everything else, I weigh in the Favor of Soundforge, never even heard of Pristine Sounds 2000 and from my experience with WaveLab, it's not in the same category.
Re: The best music editor?
Concerning my question...
I've tons of C-cassettes full of "cool" gigs & I would like to burn them to CD's. The quality ain't always that good, so I need a software that can make the sounds a bit better etc etc

I've tried most of the programs you mentioned and Cool Edit is the best and easiest to use. They all have some good features but overall Cool Edit is the winner.

SB Live! Platinum 5.1/Cubasis & playback probs.
I recently invested in SB Live! Platinum 5.1 installed the card and the drivers and the bundled software. All other audio programs work, but come to use Cubasis and listen to the demo track all that is played back is noise/crackle. I'm using a pentium 3. I'm guessing it may be something to do with the set up of the system but don't really know. Can anyone cast some light to help.
Re: SB Live! Platinum 5.1/Cubasis & playback probs.
have you gone through the audio setup and selected the appropriatr driver, ie asio?

It's probably something to do with the ASIO drivers. Look in the audio setup portion of the program and try to adjust the settings. I had problems running Cubase VST 32 on my Pentium 3 finally went back to Cool Edit Pro. Some programs just won't run on some computers! Unless you're a total computer geek it's too hard to figure out where the problem is. Cool Edit Pro or 2000 have a lot of things going for them. 1. Stability-hardly ever crashes 2.-Easy to use great interface. 3. Loads quicker than any other program I've used ,seems like a small thing but if you open and close a program a lot it's nice not to have to twiddle your thumbs for 10 more seconds. 4. versatility-COOL EDIT ROCKS!
