Full Music Recording on my iMac?
I have an iMac DV SE 500mhz graphite. I am also a mp3.com artists in which i record hip hop. I want to make pro sounding music. I noticed PC users make excellent sounding music. Even some mac users sound like they recorded their music in a studio. My question is: I use a external Mic (a really old Sony, i think it's mono, mic) and choose Sound In in the control panels, set the gain, and record all vocals in Felt Tip Sound Studio Pro, then paste all the vocal tracks onto the instrumental. But the vocals sounds different. I mean, it doesnt sound crisp, or pro like the other artists that make their music with their computers. Now, the question is, should i use my iMac's built in Mic, or should i buy those thin PC mics that come with the Gateway compters? And will it work on my mac? Im looking to get stero quality music. Cause the instrumental sounds pro, but the vocals sound mono-like. If you listen to your favorite band, you would notice that it sounds like their are around you, surround sound, but my recordings sound like im in front of you, the vocals are centered, unlike pro music, in which it sounds crisp, and soundlike in both sides of the head phones. Please help me.

Re: Full Music Recording on my iMac?
I dont know which mic you should use but...when using a computer for music, it's usu. only as good as your soundcard...but with an IMAC it's different (I think since it's digital)...you don't need a good soundcard (which can cost $500), but you need to buy this one Firewire interface (by someone I forget). The interface is hardware with ins and outs for music that goes to your firewire. The good news is u don't need to buy a soundcard and interface but...the interface costs like $800 I believe...oh, and to make pro music it takes a lot, including pro equipment (aside from your recording equipment - esp. a mic - try getting a used AKG C1000, they run like $150 used)...knowing how to EQ and mix, compressing your music, and then mastering your music...
well, good luck and don't stop making music no matter what happens!
good nrg...peace.

Re: Full Music Recording on my iMac?
A decent quality sound card is important, but the two MOST important for good sounding music are the speakers you're playing it on and the microphone you're recording with.
If you want quality vocals, pinch the pennies and buy a good mic. The AKG that Uno mentioned is good. Also take a look at the Shure SM57 and SM58. They are high quality and relatively inexpensive.
Studio bands also use effects. That is a big part of getting that "stereo sound." If you know anyone with an effects processor you could try experimenting with that. Also, there are software programs that offer some pretty good effects. I'm not sure of good ones for iMacs but they shouldn't be hard to find.

HELP! Need audio mix software advice!
I'm a novice DJ, and I'd like to make a "megamix" CD of a dance group on my Mac G4 400m running OS9,192 RAM. I'd like to import from a CD, mix (using cross fades) and adjust sound levels, them burn to my Que Firewire drive. I'm looking for a SIMPLE and relatively cheap app ($100 range) that will do this. So far Peak LE seems to be the leader, but there are differing opinions. Any thoughts? please help! Thank you in advance.

I have just downloaded "GROOVE - Drum Station DT-OIO - restricted version" and tried to play a sound file - I just cannot hear anything.

software for precision tonal analysis
I'm looking for some easy to use software which will give analysis by harmonic composition and level of each harmonic of single notes of instruments - specifically, I want to be able to analyse the harmonic spectrum of individual organ pipes with a view to being able to recreate that. I will want to examine pipes of barious pitches and to a precise degree. I am most interested in steady state at the moment, but need to look eventually at startup transients and decay too. I'm looking for something that will offer a high degree of precision, but which is easy to use, and ideally free or if good, cheap.
I want to analyse from microphone, mini-disk, and other dogital sources.
Perhaps someone can help!
atari st beginner
I have just laid my hands on an atari st and want to start using it to make music. Can anybody tell me what I'll need to get set up?
Re: atari st beginner
: I have just laid my hands on an atari st and want to start using it to make music. Can anybody tell me what I'll need to get set up?
Assuming you got an Atari St1040 that's not modified in any way, you're gonna need a keyboard with midi-in and midi-out. Next thing you'll need is sequencer software like Cubase or something similar. This will do to create arrangements and midifiles. If you're planning on recording and editing real sounds however, like voices or guitars with the computer then you're gonna need something much more powerful. I've used an Atari for many years and really enjoyed it. Compared to an average Windows PC however with a reasonable soundcard and RAM memory the Atari is very limited.
MC-303 / CAKEWALK STUDIOWARE -- pASS????
I've downloaded a studioware panel for my Roland MC-303, so I can use MIDI sound module mode. It's called 'Roland MC 303 OTC.cakewalk studioware.' The dude who made it password protected it and I've been up all night trying to find something out. If anyone has any information on this, I have been making beats officially for 4 years now and I've got mad advice for kids with low cash to start making beats. Help!!!!!

Converting Real Audio to MP# or other convertable format.
Hi, anyone know any program, Windows or Mac, preferably Mac, that will easily convert Real Audio Meadia files, the rm files to another sound format, such as MP3? Please respond either here or at my email.
Thanks, Derek
Re: Converting Real Audio to MP# or other convertable format.
If you want to record them from streaming audio as .mp3 or .wav or several other formats, try Total Recorder by High Criteria. If you already have the .ra files and want to convert them, I'm not sure. Good luck

Orion pro, Fruity 3, or Magix studio 6 deluxe?
Ok, I want to start making some music on my computer. Now it's a JUNGLE of different s/w out there for a newbie like me :) but from what i have been reading on various sites and from testing Demos I have come to the conclusion that one of those programs might be what I need (orion, fruity, magix studio 6). The learning curve isn't insanely steep, and they appear to be "complete" in a sense (include sequenser, softsynths, drummachines etc). I dont want to "outgrow" the program too fast.
At this point I'm leaning towards FL 3 mainly because the appealing GUI :). If someone has a bit more experience from these programs than I do, and could give me some advice (which one you like best and why) I would appreciate it a ton.
Btw I'm mostly interested in creating beats (low BPM like hiphop) and adding some nice basslines and melodies to them.
