Re: sound advice
Maybe the Soundblaster Live Platinum without the 5.1 decoder.
The Live Drive is a good addition to have, but if you don't need it, get something like the MP3+ .. and you could also buy a different live drive, with features that might be more useful to you than the ones on the CL livedrive.

Vocals recording
I have the cakewalk home studio 7.0, i am planning to buy the cakewalk 9.0 audiopro. i have been recording music but when i record vocals in audio the quality is poor, i hear it like distant, clearless, the treble is missing i dont kwow what to do. I have a microphone sure 58M, what should i do. Should i pass my voice trhough an effect processor or should i record my voice just plain an after that pass it through effects, what can you recommend?
second Q. what is the difference between the cakewalk 9.0 version that can be downloaded from these issue from the original ? a really appreciate your helpo.

Re: Vocals recording
what i observed is record plain voice first and then apply effects (i used reverb and echo little bit). sounds really different .

What sort of pre-amp/ mixer are you using to get the mic to line level?
Also it is the general rule of thumb to record dry and add effects later. The only effects that I would recommend using while tracking are gentle compression and eq.
If you need more gain and only have an effect processor I would suggest that you use it in bypass mode and use the input and output controls to achieve the necessary gain make up. Start by turning the input to unity gain (7 out of 10 is a common point if it is not marked) and slowly turn up the output control. If you bring the output to the same level as the input start turning up the input gain to avoid unwanted noise.
Also make sure that your mic and cable are in working condition. If you are using a 1/4 inch input jack make sure that you are using a proper impedance adapter.
Hope This Helps!
Regards
Ralph
Re: Also...(on gain)
[: Start by turning the input to unity gain (7 out of 10 is a common point if it is not marked) and slowly turn up the output control. If you bring the output to the same level as the input start turning up the input gain to avoid unwanted noise.]
Here's another suggestion regarding input gain-output volume settings. It is something I found on the web a while back written by a college professor teaching digital recording (though I can't remember who or where I found it...I'll think. It was a good resource), and I've used it with considerable success both recording and live.
Start by turning the output up all the way, the input down all the way. I do this with my headphones and the main volume to the recording device or sound system too zero, or at least very low. Gradually turn up the input gain to the highest point you can get it without any audible distortion or meter-peaking (if it has a meter for the input, and make sure it's the signal distorting, not your headphones turned up too loud). Then turn your output volume down low and your main up to where you need it. (I try to keep at least my main volume as close as possible to unity...it gives the most natural signal without having to alter it by cutting or boosting, and it leaves more room for any adjustments you have to make later) Finally, you just turn your output volume back up the level you need. It's easy to get away with tweaking this setting a little...if you find you're turning the output up almost all the way try upping the gain a little.
p.s. I'm a big fan of the sm58 myself. I really dig their sm57 too. It's great for miking instruments, particularly accoustics. It has a little lower bass response than the 58, which is more (and well) tailored for vocals.

how do i get an mp3 to play in my web page??
How do I get an mp3 to play in my homepage?? i have tried already, but i must be doing something wrong because when i open my own page i can hear the music, but no one else can hear music when they open my page.
Re: how do i get an mp3 to play in my web page??
Hi Mich,
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the problem is that your file is residing in the wrong location on the server where your web-site is hosted, and it plays for you because the file is available locally, and/or possibly, also, the link iformation of the file points to a file on your computer instead of your hosting server.
Try placing the file in the same remote folder as the page where the link is, checking the link address in the html code.
If you have any questions just e-mail me.

Does anybody know the best way to get my Motor Mix controller to interact to Digital Performer 2.7? I’ve installed it using the Mackie HUI protocol but that did not work even though the same person designed them to use the same settings. I have been told that there is a way for this to work. Thanks

i am beginner in producing music on pc. have dabbled with magix music maker, acid, fruityloops. etc.
i want to take it a step further and gather the way to go is midi.

1.buy midi controller keyboard, eg. evolution, and new soundcard eg. soundblaster live
or
2.buy secondhand keyboard with onboard sounds (synth?)
i have numerous demo programs eg. cubasis, logic fun, - sym synth, vaz, tassman, fruityloops. i have a litle knowledge of the sequencers and fruityloops but am not sure how to use and what the others do.
how do i use these soft synths etc within my current pc only set - up (medium/high spec, pci64v soundcard).

turntable to pc input
i want to attach my turntables to my pc via a pre amp mixer.first,do i need a special program or software to set this up and second, what format can i record the actual music in after the first. simple,eh?
Re: turntable to pc input
You can hook it up to the pre-amp then from the pre-amp to your soundcards line-in You should not need any special software, other than a program to do the actual recording. Try Cooledit, or Soundforge if you have access.

looking for the right shareware
Hi, I have a sound program on my computer which allows me to record songs on my guitar via the built-in mic on my monitor. But it dosent allow me to add any sound to a song ( ie a second harmonizing part), the only way I can achieve this is to make two seperate files then converge them. The problem is I need to hear the original song in order to blend in any second ,third of fourth harmonics. quetion: is there a program that would allow me to record a sound into a existing file while it's playing? Thanks for your help and consideration.

I am very much a beginner and I am basicly trying to teah myself on this pc. i do have books but cannot find anything in them on this subject.

If i were given basic instructions i could do this.
Thank you Barbara

Although...
I am a Mac user, I do realise the similarities on the two different platforms and the CD burning scenario is virtually the same. Burning CD's is the job of a dedicate CD burner which looks like the CD Rom in your computer but has the ability to literally Burn information into CDR (cd recordables) you have to buy these Blank CD's especially and are generally very cheap. Most if not all CD burners you buy will also burn CDRW (cd re-recordables) which means you can record on them and erase what you have recorded in order to burn some more onto them. They usually wont play in your normal CD player but the CDR will if you burn them as Audio CD's.
Linux is an Operating system Like the Mac OS or Windows and you only need it if you are running Linux as your operating system. If you PC boots and says ' Welcome to Windows' then put it out of your mind.

I want to attach Tabla music(Swarshala) with Cakewalk
I am a cakewalk user. I comose midis in it. I have another Midi software named Swarshala. This software is used to compose Tabla music (Indian Ryhthem instrument) in Midi format.
Whan I open this Midi file in cakewalk, its sound is changed into Drum Percussions instead of Tabla Percussions. Why ? Solve my problem if you r expert in MIDI ! ?
I am anxiously waiting for your answer!!!!!!!!!
Re: I want to attach Tabla music(Swarshala) with Cakewalk
Dear Shahid,
This problem is due to the fact that tabla is not included in the default MIDI instruments. As a result, it is played with the default drum kit.
To play the proper tabla sounds, you will have to create a new tabla instrument out of the individual tabla strokes (wave files).
We are also selling such patches in our TaalTrax 2.0 and TaalTrax Pro CDs (www.swarsystems.com/TaalTrax).
Regarding SwarShala, you can get it at www.swarsystems.com.
Sincerely,
Mariano Etchepareborda

P.S.: Also next time you have a question, mail it to support@swarsystems.com so that we can handle it straight away.
Re: I want to attach Tabla music(Swarshala) with Cakewalk
it sounds like Cakewalk is searching your soundcard for onboard midi sounds, rather than associating from the original source (the sounds that were used in Swashala)?
something to do with your setting in cakewalk, but cant tell you much more than that coz i dont use cakewalk (or swashala). Although swashala does sound cool...where can I get it?
Re: I want to attach Tabla music(Swarshala) with Cakewalk

to get the same sound in cakewalk u need something like a sampler - using the orig. wavefiles of the instrument and make u'r own tabla ect.

Those elements are from old analog synths and soundfonts from old computers. You can search downloads for old moog sounds or sample the video games themselves and tweak them in a sound editor like Soundforge or the like.

Demo...
I don't usually answer questions like this as it's regarded as not the done thing on this and other Forums. I have tried the Demo of this program and am totally blown away... The thing that gets me is the thought and love that has gone into the programs design and the final results are as inspiring as the companies original Re-Birth but much much more powerful.
I would therefore feel more than a little guilty about nicking it off them and I think you should think about that.
