There is no need...

For beating at each other. Apart from the fact that Mac users are used to it. It seems more that you are a troubled PC user than a Mac hater. I never look for a fight, especially with someone that gives as much time to this forum as you do so lets not travel that route, especially you being a fellow Brit!

Everyone is limiting themselves if they believe that a computers abundant software is the limiting factor. That has always appeared more the concern of the Computer Gamer. The ability to make music on a given platform has far surpassed the stage where the Computer system is the limit. We have been able to achieve the same results on the two platforms for many years now and the choice is generally a feeling you get for a given device, like an individuals choices of guitar, you know that. If I choose a Mac, it's because I feel I can live an easier life as a computer user than I have experienced using Windows. If you get better results from a PC then that's fine by me, it's Our own choice. I don't wish to argue my descision with anyone, but I have made it on the basis of 15 years of music making and am happy with it, personally.

On the point of Mhz... take it from a Electronics Technician, Mhz is the frequency an IC pulsates at, it's clock speed and has little baring to computations. A truer comparison with various processors is IPS (instructions per second (more recently MIPS, millions of instructions per second) you will be able to judge better the ability of the given processor. For what it's worth seeing we have come this far. Intel's own measurement of the G4 processor showed that a G4 running at 500Mhz was 2.94 times the speed of an Intel Pentium 3 running at 600mhz. A simple explanation why I can pack a 5 minute 128bps .Aif to MP3 in under a minute.

Although these things generally bore me to tears, I can't help considering them when choosing a processor chip for a given job. Combine this with a fast system buss running a more than capable set of high speed transfer options and the system cannot be beat today. Dixons sell Mhz as does Intel. Do the maths above anything other than the high street mentality and reap the benefits.

I'm not trying to preach, more defend WHY people buy Mac's, why I bought a Mac. Like I said, don't feel sorry for us, live beside us and don't feel threatened... I have many music making PC friends and don't resent them at all. We do all the mixing around my house as I have the undiscussed prefered system. I payed good money for it and love it...

take it easy steve and no love lost...!

Tape to pc.....

If I want to transfer music on a tape to my computer, how do I do it?

Re: Tape to pc.....

just plug the output from tape player into soundcard line in/mic and press record on any number of audio apps eg audio editor, sequencer etc. Can be found on this sites software pages - link at top of board.

Hello! I'm very new to this!!

I am about to become the owner of a Packard bell Pentium 166mmx, 32meg RAM, 6.2GB Hard, 16bit Sound and want to run some form of easy to use studio software.
I play guitar and would very much like to record riffs onto my computer, then cut and paste them along the track. Maybe then adding samples of drum loops from cd and a couple more guitar/ analogue keyboard tracks. does anyone know of a package that will allow me to do this at a very basic level on my (low spec) machine. I would be using my 4-track as a mixing desk. I don't really know what I need (if there is anything). Sorry if this sounds like a stupid request, but I would appreciate the help. Thank you

Re: Hello! I'm very new to this!!

Check out Goldwave for recording your riffs and check out Multiquence for putting it all together. These 2 programs should run just fine on your 166. I used to remix with a 75mhz Packard Bell using this software.
(I still use Goldwave beacause it's so sweet!)
Hope this helps.

Midi Data

Hi,

I am struggling with a way to control program changes from an external interface. For instance what I want to do is go from sequenced pattern A01 to A02 to A03 etc. My concern is the midi information needed to be sent to the device for the program change. If there is any direction you can offer it would be more than appreciated.

Thank you,
Vincent

Re: Midi Data

Hi, Vincent,

The MIDI data of each program change has 2 bytes:
Status Byte: 1100XXXX
Data Byte: 0XXXXXXX

Where the last 4 bit of Status Byte means MIDI channel, and the last 7 bit of Data Byte means
Program number-----it's also the instrument No..

Any further questions, pls. feel free to contact me.

Roalty Free Music

Can someone direct me to a website where I might find roalty free music to be used a background for training/marketing video?

which software?

what is the best software to download in order for me to import music from tapes, vinyl and other external sources, into my computer, so that i can then burn them onto cd?

Re: cubase 24bit

: If you are using win 95 or 98 or higher the wave recorder that comes with same and your sound card input give you the ability to record wav files then burn them onto cdr or cdrw. No additional software required.

Re: which software?

an audio editor is the best app to use - it will allow u to clean up the recordings to ie remove hiss/boost with EQ. Search relevant pages of this site - link at top of board. 'Sampled' is freeware and will do the job I think.

how to add crossfade to cuesheet? (cdrwin)

I think I've worked-out how to create a 'hidden' audio track zero using CDRWIN's cuesheet: my question is, though, is there a command/syntax to crossfade audio within a cuesheet (or as an option within CDRWIN's GUI)? or is there a plugin or editor that allows this?

Thanks in advance.

Another option is?: Is there a method (editor or text trick) for EASY CD CREATOR that allows you to edit the layout (ie: to add and modify indicies within layout) of an audio compilation?

Setting up Burner

Just reloaded system, keep getting error messages trying to copy CD (Easy CD Creator D'lux 4) - have had problem B4, can't figure out where in DMA settings/BIOS I'm losing it - machine was put together wrong in first place by shop - ho hum! - had it all happening (after same problem!) loaded Direct X 8, which seemed like a good idea - good old 7.0a worked a treat - can't go back - reload - DANG! - got SB Live!, disabled on board? - hadn't changed anything 'cept BIOS drivers (updated correct ones) Voila! Back to Errors - thank God for Balls Of Steel pinball game, but it's not what I want to be doing!!!

Cd file formats

Could anyone tell me what music software program will read files with the extension of .cda.
These files have the lyrics in them and although I can place them on my computer I cannot see the words. I would like to be able to play/read them and be able to change key etc.
any clues?

A question regarding recording a guitar party

Would it be useful if I put a mic at the rear of my
combo loudspeaker, and then mix its signal with the original one, coming from the front mic, in order to catch the bass-reflex frequencies?

Re: A question regarding recording a guitar party

You are more likely to phase cancel the midrange frequencies that define your guitar sound. But anyways and get back to us...

Thankyou

Thank you for your existence!

micrologic 2 midi sequencer

When I use the sustain pedal on my Roland A-33 with this software it sticks on a note and wont stop until I
close the program. Switching the keyboard off or pulling out the plugs doesn't help. I haven't seen a word on your site about MICRO LOGIC. Is it that bad or just out of date? Which is the best sequencer for an amateur? Please help.

Re: micrologic 2 midi sequencer

no micrologic is not atall out of date. sounds like a conflict somewhere - you can try reinstalling the software to see if that helps and also see if the problem occurs on another sequencer deom which u can download - Cubasis or Cakewalk are similar apps. finally do u have the latest drivers for your soundcard installed?

For an amateur I would higly recommend Data Beckers Music Centre Pro - cheap, great to look at, easy to use, unrivalled onboard midi functionality, Direct X effects bundled + 16 audio tracks I think - check it out.

Cubase and MAC OS9 ?

I would like to know if Cubase VST 4.0 works with
Mac OS9? Ever since I instaled MAC OS9 the computer freezes when I attempt to launch Cubase.

It does but...

You have to upgrade to version 9.0.4 I think. I saw people at a trade show trying to load it and the basic answer to that one was something to do with earlier versions of the Mac OS. I don't believe there is a quick patch you can run... just upgrade the system.

Go to control panels whilst online and select "Software Update". This will find all the Mac OS components available and compare them with your current system. If you don't have 9.0.4 it will give it as an option among other things. It's quite large as a download I think so do it before making supper!!!

Using ACID and syncing to Yamaha RM1X from a UX256

I'm trying to use my ACID program for loops and my RM1X for my MIDI applications. I have a Yamaha UX256 MIDI interface that has 6 in and outs. I want to be able to also use my EX5R,Orbit,CS2X and a Korg X5D as the master keyboard. See I'm even getting confused as I write this! So if anyone is familiar with ACID Pro 2.0 MIDI applications and Yamaha gear I would be much obliged! Thanks

Re: Using ACID and syncing to Yamaha RM1X from a UX256

Tell me your problems,.. :)

Digitech 2112

Any patch editor/librians out there to support the Digitech 2112 guitar processor? I have not seen this mentioned anywhere. I also have a Casio CZ-101, and Alesis HR-16, and others. I have seen shareware editors on the web to handle these,, anyone have a preference? Or,,, is spending the big buck for an editor to handle all kinds of things the way to go?

Thanks
