I should preface this with the fact that I do not know what I am talking about. I play piano. I like industrial/electronic music. It seams to me that I now that I have a job that pays ok (not well, but ok) that I should get into some home recording midi stuff. But I have no clue where to begin, or for that mater where to look to begin. This is what I would like: I would like to be able to site down and play some sounds, then sit back down and layer some more sounds on top of the first sounds. (sounds simple enough) I also play guitar, so if I could then plug up my AX and lay down a riff or too that would be cool. I am not very good at drums, so If I can I would like to have a system that I could download/install drum loops to.

I am a big fan of the works of NIN/Charlie Clouser/depche mode and would like to buy equipment that has sounds featured in their songs. (I know buying equipment will not make me sound like them, that's where talent comes in) What I have: A Old Yamaha keyboard with horrid sounds, a sx7 I think (NOT a dx7) and a pocket full of cash. I was planning on buying a new computer (windows) with in the next few days, so any advice on what stats it should have to be compatible with any equipment I might buy would be helpful.

I am not trying to put together the ultimate studio, or looking to become the next underground sound, just something I can play with in my spare time (I also do not want to spend a zillion dollars) Thanks in advance.

You should take a look at

Both the programs will let you sequence MIDI and record guitar or any other audio source. Cubase will also let you use softsynths and drum machines.

I am looking for a low priced midi keyboard.
do you have any ideas? I would like to spend about $100.00. I am thinking about buying the cakewalk for guitar players, has anybody used it, and if so what do you think of it?
I also think that I need sound blaster live.
I am very new to this so I don't know all the software, or all their uses.

Remixing audio files

Can anybody suggest a simple program that allows me to adjust base, midrange and treble levels of songs before I record them? I'm using Adaptec's "Sound stream" and when I add the "Realizer" effect, the song sounds better, but the base and treble is sometimes to high. Thanks,

I assume you mean .wav files? Well anyway you can use an 'audio editor' for this job. 'Sampled' is an excellent example of such a freeware audio application - available from www.sonicspot.com

I use SoundForge XP. It came bundled with a burner I bought. Actually the correct name of the software is CD Archictect.

There are other programs that do this but I don't know them.

There is a Direct X plugin - AnalogX Vocal Remover - which is applied inside an 'audio sequencer' which attempts to do this feat but results are apparently varied.

Multitrack recording/editing on a Mac cube?

Software stuff to start with. If you look on the front of some computer magazines cover CD's you often find some free software for use. I have seen Logic Audio fun on the front of Computer Music magazine more than once and although it only dealt with 8 audio tracks, it's a starter. You could download Pro-Tools FREE from digidesign or elsewhere which will give you a taster of the Pro-Tools system. It can handle 8 tracks in it's basic form, after all, it is free..! You could also look at Steinbergs Cubasis which wont cost you a lot at all or Logic Audio AV which I think gives you 16 tracks of audio with VST effects compatibility. There are much more serious options such as the Larger and more capable Cubase VST or Logic Audio Silver/Gold/Platinum range although they will run into hundreds of pounds. I use Logic Audio 4.x.x which gives me upto 96 tracks of audio although you will have to fit a very fast HD to manage that. On my 10gig stock western digital HD that came with my G4/400, I managed 24 "Stereo" (48tracks) before it cut out and started clipping. I have just completed a song that had around 26 tracks in real time with a bunch of eq's and effects. It's quite awsome.

It's worth noting that a lot of memory is generally required for audio with effects so if you have 128 or even 192, don't expect the world. If I were you, I would go and buy a copy of Logic Audio AV which will cost you little. It will support VST effects (some are free) and more importantly, support the Velocity Engine on your G4 processor which ramps up the sequencers capabilities no end. You will have 16 audio tracks to play with which is generally enough and you'll be able to plaster eq's and fx all over the place.

As far as the USB Firewire interface is concerned. I don't presently know of any firewire audio devices although a lot of USB ones are starting to creep out of the wood work. There are some cheapish ones made by Roland (although I don't recall the name) or you could go for something like the new Tascam US-428 which will work with any USB computer Mac or Microsoft. It is in the form of a mixing desk and has various ins and outs including mic inputs, instrument inputs and digital SP/Dif. You also get a couple of Midi ports... all through one USB connector!!

...have a 6400/200 which is more or less identical in performance with your machine. I rann audion but found it a bit crude and slow compared with other offerings. You main problem is probably because you have so much Virtual Memory turned on. Most audio programs wont run with VM on at all so I would turn it off and try again. 32 megs isn't a lot these days and you should look at some of the more simple programs to play your MP3's. Quicktime will play them although obviously without a playlist and all the frills.

I use AmpRadio for playing MP3's which has a nice and simple playlist where you can drag your MP3 folder onto it and it generates a complete list with folders. It has a hidden away 10 band Eq and receives live radio broadcast which can be recorded by a simple button press as Mp3's onto your desktop. You can broadcast your own station with it too and it only cost $10 to register. Worked great on my 6400/200...!

Acid Music 2.0

Recently , I purchased a copy of Acid Music 2.0 .
My objective was to create a special sound track for a friend .
She wanted some whimsical music to laugh at and take with her
on a road trip .
I blended and mixed some popular rock N'Roll and other
upbeat stuff with special sound fx to match the theme
of the music ..Ex. Explosions , Helicopters , Chain Saw
and other selections .
The results..impressive and professional sounding .
My point is that I had almost no knowledge about mixing
and producing music . Acid Music 2.0 made it happen , and very easily.
I added a actual recording of a shuttle launch to C.C.R.'S
Bad Moon Rising .. It was very cool .

I have CeQuadrat just!burn. I follow my new compaq presario guide book to the tee and the cd won't play. it looks like its burned but just clicks on a cd player. Every time i've tried to burn it comes up error 75087203 when being finalized. What is the problem?

Help! Had my Compaq Presario upgraded to 2000 in June. Now the CeQuadrat "Just Burn" isn't on my desktop. Have gone into everywhere trying to find it. Maybe I deleted it by mistake if that's possible. Need directions to download it back into my computer or where to find it and get it back to my desktop!! Have to put several things onto a CD to put into another computer.

I had the same problem recently...thought maybe a trojan horse found its way into my system...Compaq was no help...ended up buying a new burner

Can someone please help me. I had a virus onmy computer that erased my hard rive. When I reprogramed my computer with the bckup disk my JUst Burn is no longer on my drive. How can I get it back without spending money on a new cd burner??

I too have that software. Mine works fine, but you might want to try going into the Compaq RESTORE menu and you can reinstall certain programs again.
However, if you are just seeing the CD icon, there may be another problem. Open up your PC to see if your IDE cables are securely connected, and also see if windows recognizes your CD writer drive. You can do this by going into DEVICE MANAGER and double-clicking on the CD writer disk icon. If it lists it as a cd rom, Windows needs to recognize it as a rewritable drive. Usually the CD writing software takes care of this.
I recently downloaded a good tool.
It's only for writing audio cds, but works great with a cd writer I had on a PC which didn't have enough memory for the shipped software. The software is called ASHAMPOO.exe and you can search for this on cnet.

I'd rather use my existing CeQuadrat software in conjunction with my new TDK burner. When I open just burn! I receive a "No Recorder found" message and I cannot use the software. Is there a way to "point" CeQuadrat to my TDK burner? The TDK burner appears on the CeQuadrat burner window.

I have had this error.
Do not format the disk or use packet.Click on Just Audio,drag your tracks from the source window etc.,and record your CD. When the recording is finished a window will ask you whether you want to finalize the CD. Click yes.
