Re: Kazaa and Mac?
Before you go doddling into KaZaA hell, you should check out these links:
Info-mac freeware search (MIT)
Download the FTP client "Fetch" from Info-Mac first. This nice freeware program is great for FTP, and runs on almost any 68K or PPC mac. After you download Fetch, you will see in the Fetch folder, a bookmarks list. Also, in the program, there is a shortcuts list. These lists are for tons and tons of FTP sites around the world. All of them can deliver Mac freeware directly to your Mac via FTP, which is much faster than HTTP (web browsing and downloading). Not all of the links will be current, but enough of them will to get you started. Info-Mac archives tend to have older software, but they have lots and lots of it. Plenty of it is new, too. If you are in America, you will benefit from downloading from the German, Japanese and Australian sites because of the global time difference. , and because those countries typically keep nice collections of good Mac programs even when they are no longere available in the States.
After you do the Fetch thing, examine these links.

Taking vocals from an mp3??
Can it be done?? what program can I use? I been making beats with fruityloops and would like to add vocals from some other songs and i think that would be tight.
Re: Taking vocals from an mp3??
Ah the path to wisdom is paved with downloads. Acapella versions are what you need. It's not worth it to try with any software unless you've got great equipment and know what yer doing.

Re: Taking vocals from an mp3??
Just try to get the song you want in acapella. Removing vocals from a track or vice-versa is not worth the time and effort.

i understand there is a way, but u need cool edit pro....... something to do with finding an instrumentqal version, then offsetting it and inverting a selection......... having said that, your probably better off just looking and searching to see if the desired song was ever released as an acapella, as your very unlikely to get a quality sound after removing the beat.

The problem is that we try to keep this forum as easily
accessible as possible, unfortunately that leave the
door open for these jerks. We just have to keep walking
around closing the door behind them.
Re: For god sake...
I just pipe up to try and reduce the disappointment for the people that come here more than anything.
As Macintorch mentioned, it's good to have an anonymous option on the internet forums although it does bring the worst out in some of us..

sd2 files
Hi There!
I have a cd with sd2 files on it, most likely it was burned on a Mac. But I've a pc and really would like to open these files on it. Does anyone know of a simple conversion program or plugin so I will finally be able to listen to what's on the cd?
Sound Designer II files
I'm not sure, but you might be able to listen to the files if you open them as raw (pulse-code modulation) audio files (.RAW, .PCM, .$$$). I think WaveLab Lite can do this. If you have Cubasis, then you probably have WaveLab Lite which came with it. If not, Tuareg can read raw audio files, but it is somewhat difficult to use Tuareg, because it is a drum machine/sampler, not as much of an editor, and files might be split into mono.
The key is to find an Editor that can open raw audio, and to use that option. Raw audio files contain nothing but audio, so they don't even contain a description of their own contents. That is why you will need to tell your editor how to display your files if you open them as raw. Your editor will ask you to specify the sampling rate, bit resolution, number of channels, and sometimes the linearity. SD2 files can have more than 2 channels, I believe, so take that into consideration. However, like AIFF and WAVE files, most of the time SD2 files are as follows:
STEREO (or 2 tracks)
LINEAR (not compressed, no A-Law, no Mu-Law scaling)
44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz, 88.2kHz, 32kHz, or 64kHz SAMPLING RATE
16, 24, 32, 20, 8, or 12 BIT RESOLUTION
Remember, CD-quality "Redbook" standard audio is
16-bit Linear Stereo @ 44.1kHz
Other common formats are
16-bit Linear Stereo @ 48kHz
24-bit Linear Stereo @ 96kHz
24-bit Linear Stereo @ 48kHz
32-bit Linear Stereo @ 96kHz
an upper limit to the sampling rate is about 192kHz,
but this is dated to Sept. 2002. In the future, this will surely not be a limit.
After CD audio, 20 and 18 bit resolutions came shortly before 24 bit resolution, and 96Khz sampling came at about the same time as 32-bit resolution. 18 and 20 bit resolutions show up most often with 44.1kHz and 48kHz sampling rates. Also, bit resolutions above 16 are more likely to be at sampling rates of at least 48kHz. Sampling rates such as 32kHz are often seen with 12 or 16-bit audio, and is more of a hardware sampler format. 64kHz and 88.2kHz sampling rates are most often available from high-end professional mastering AD or DA converters which are already at 24bit/96kHz (typically HDCD and/or DVD processors).
8-bit formats are very often compressed or at sampling rates below 44.1khz. 22kHz, 11khz, and various odd numbers are common for 8 (and some 12-bit) formats such as A-Law, and Mu-Law (includes NeXT, .AU).
Focus on guessing the most common formats and you'll save yourself a lot of time. Be aware, however, that any kind of file (audio or not) can be opened as a RAW file, and any opened audio file will be incorrectly playing the header information as audio. For this reason, audio files opened as RAW will have noise at the beginning of each track when opened correctly. This noise is actually the header information. Also, there is no way to save a RAW file as a RAW file and preserve it's header settings. RAW is just that--raw, and means without header information. You will need to save your RAW file as an AIFF or WAVE to preserve the correct settings. You may also need to edit out the noise at the beginning in order to get the duration and timing to be more appropriate. Usually, at a very high zoom factor, one can see where the header ends and where the true audio begins. This will most often be somewhere between the first 40 and 80 samples of the file.
Good luck.
Re: Sound Designer II files
Thank you Macintorque for your very detailed explanation of audio formats. I actually have an audio editor that can open .RAW files and all. I'm running CoolEditPro 2.0 at the moment. A really smooth program! :-)
But I'm afraid my problem is even more complex. Yesterday I found out that Quicktime (at least the more recent versions with the npqtplugin3.dll installed) has an option to play sd2 files. A tip for others maybe.
But my problem is that the cd is also Mac formatted!! Mac can read pc formatted cd's without any problem, but pc's can't read Mac formatted cd's! Thank you Bill Gates!! Grrrrmmpppffff!!!!
So I'm afraid I have to take the cd to a Mac and from there have to create a new 'hybrid' cd or something? Or does someone else have another brilliant solution? I'd be very happy to hear it! I always get very frustrated by all these different platform issues.
Reading MacOS CD-ROMs.
Actually, there is downloadable PC software called MacDisk.
It used to be available from HTTP://MacDisk. Maybe it still is. I have used this software on my Win98SE PC. It worked just fine with Zip disks, diskettes, and CD-ROMS. If that program is incorrect, the same company makes at least 2 other Mac-related downloadable programs. Please give it a try.
You could also use Gemulator Explorer available from emulators.com If that link is bad, try emulation.net
If none of those work, try HFVExplorer, or vMacLink. Both of those can be found on emulation net somewhere.
And finally, if you are going totally nuts, try ARDI Executor. Which is possibly still available from Ardi.com
Surely, one these downloadable solutions will work. I suggest trying MacDisk, since it is the easiest to operate and requires no installation
Re: Reading MacOS CD-ROMs.
I'm having the same trouble reading sd2 files on a PC.
I can mount the Mac cdrom on a PC via "macopener" software, however Wavelab refuses to recognise the sd2 files. Can anybody give advice on this?
Cheers
Joe

MP3 Splitter
I need a program that can take like a 60 minute MP3 file, and slpit into say 12, 4 minunte songs. Is there any programs that can do this??/
Re: MP3 Splitter
Depends whether the split points correspond to gaps in the music. If so, conver the MP3 to WAV format and use WAV Singulator to chop it up (it looks for 2sec silences in the music).
Otherwise, get hold of any MP3 editor (look in the software section).

Question for Jason Horton
I realise that it is not reasonable to discuss Crackz and Serialz and Warez here. However, I was wondering if it would be acceptable to mention the names of cracked programs if I do not mention the crack codes, procedures, or their sources of availability? For instance, I have on my drive a combination of freeware, shareware, and commercially purchased programs. However, I must admit that I've used a freeware crack index in order to test drive some downloaded trialware/demoware. Would I be unreasonable to mention this kind of thing in a discussion of downloadable software tools? It comes to mind because I would like to recommend groups of software which work well in tandem, as well as some software modification techniques (using ResEdit 2.1.3 to change icons, delete pop-up windows, etc)
Please let me know you personal opinion in addition to the hitsquad official policy (which I will no doubt read very carefully).
I do not wholeheartedly support cracking, and I am generally in favor of purchasing primary audio software tools, but I also have a softness for unorthodox solutions to impeded functionality in executeable software.
