Forum Waste Of Time. READ ME READ ME...
I might get up peoples noses here but this is important information for all the people that kindly come here to answer questions and the people that ask the questions even. It's taken me some time to compile as well. I also understand the websites position on this but it HAS to change..
I chose a 7 day period of questions and answers on this forum (randomly) to find out how useful this forum is to the people that come here asking questions. Also, to see how helpful the forum is in general to those people. Without an email notification system, I think this forum is more a waste of time for both the posters and the questioners. Here's why..
Questions posted over a 7 day period = 93
Replies to those questions = 47 (good stuff)
People returning for the answers = 1
ONE!!! .. and guess who that was??? Jason Horton resident Hitsquadite..
This is ridiculous. I am convinced now that either the board changes or there is simple little to no reason to come here to help people out. I can't bring myself to type any more answers with the above figures in mind... What's the point?? It's wearing out my keyboard...
I know the above numbers suggest a good attendance from both the questioners and the regular troupe (you know who you are) but it's deeply flawed in light of people being used to email notification. It can only be that.. the non return figures are toooo extreme.
Views please??

Re: Forum Waste Of Time. READ ME READ ME...
I was going to provide some detailed stats and ask
about the period you took the sample from because
I can show very different figures - but that reminded
me of a Wizard Of Id cartoon...
King: "I promise to reduce crime in the streets by 50%"
Member of King's court: "How on earth are we going to live up to that promise?"
King: "Simple, we're going to double the number of streets!".
So instead of doubling the number of streets I
decided to roll out the beta version of the
notification service we've been working on - it
aint perfect yet but I'll be making an announcement
in less than 12 hours from now.
Jason.

SteveR, you da man, but you need to understan...(d).
Hey steve, I like your approach, but hey, i took statistics once. Your sample group is too small. Your statistics project might not be a valid reason for bailing out. Of course, if you just find that the magic is gone, well that's ok. I enjoy answering people's questions here because it's a chance for me to better understand the nature of both the questions and their answers. I burn out here too, but I come back because I like the evolution and a few special posts I see now and then.
I also remember what it was like when I first got into computer audio and didn't have very many resources to turn to. I like the idea of being able to make it easier on today's new people, especially now that the technology is changing in interesting ways.
All BBS (electronic bulletin board systems) suffer from the kinds of issues you bring up. Still, most of my obscure technical knowledge comes from reading people's responses online. I don't have to respond just to acknowledge that me, a third party, has gained more knowledge. That would be silly. Also, when I post answers, I don't expect a response usually. The responding is up to the person who posted the question. If they read the response, that is success. If somebody else reads it, that's success too, maybe even better.
Besides, reciprocity is overrated. GIFT CULTURE RULES!!!!
LONG LIVE GENEROUSITY.
By the way, Hacker Culture is one of the few remaining gift cultures
in the world. I'd say historically, Hackers elevated the BBS forum to it's current state of wide acceptance. In this sick, sick, capitalistic world, it's nice to know that people still like to share ideas. Who cares about the grammar and protocols and pragmatics if the semantics and sharing are there.
The internet is overrated. Go outside, have fun.
Tar...!
What you've said has clarity but it still seems like a shame, that's all...
I realise that typing an answer to a question is as much an opportunity to explain it to myself as it is an attempt at a helpful answer, but is that enough??? It does count for something, I know... but it seems a waste. There is some good information given on the forum that is missed by it's supposed audience. I suppose that's my gripe.
Thanks for the clarification though..

Damn, I wasn't aware of the harsh statistics! ;) That's part of the reason I disappear from now to then. However, I always figured that a lot of those who post questions, DO come back for answers, and if there is an answer, they'll read it and go. I imagine that in most cases they'll not sit down and write a reply to thank the person who answered or ask for clarifications or anything like that. But I still agree ONE is a little too extreme!
I also think that people who post questions, often check for an answer within the same day or so, while an answer might come 3 days later or more, thus leaving the person with the question unanswered, although someone posted a reply. In a sense, it renders this whole exercise useless.
I guess it's the joy of helping someone out, even though you're never sure if you did, or giving back to one of the best music sites on the net, or exchanging knowledge with some of the guys here who help a lot. I know I picked up a thing or two from this message-board.
In conclusion, I agree with u, just be patient, Steve! ;) Remember, you also play an inspirational part for those of us who still want to help and answer! ;)

You made some good points about the people coming back but not replying and the ones that come back only hours after posting. This would adjust the figures.
The real problem remains that, people believe that when they post a message and have to include their email, that they will be either responded to via email (like a free email service... cheeky) or have the email forwarded automatically like many if not all the great forum boards people are used to.
The big grinder for me is, there are good people (like yourself) that come and answer peoples questions clearly and skillfully. The time spent here is being wasted for both us and the question poster due to their misunderstanding of a 'Forum' and the forum etiquette. I have posted here for a long time but never realised myself how much I was really just talking to myself until the maths conundrum..
A new board is all there is to it. This is too old and clunky now and has become an all around waste of personal resources. I want it to change for the better as I know it will become as popular as the 'other' forums that employ the"vBulletin" system.
I also know this takes time and resources from Hitsquad themselves. They know it needs addressing.. I just want to punt it up their list of priorities.. It's a good website and powerful. This is letting the side down...

Splitting album tracks
How can I track music that I've downloaded and now want to burn. I've got tons of album mp3's, I'm trying to figure out how to burn them right, not just one long track. Is there a better way to do it other than manually?? I would greatly appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks, Gia
Re: Splitting album tracks
Try WAV Singulator - this will work as long as there are 2 second gaps between tracks. Otherwise, you'll have to do it manually.
One problem you may have is that when you've converted the mp3 to WAV, the file will be fairly big, so you'll need plenty of memory

CD-Recorder software
Can anyone help me to get NERO BUNING ROOM
or any similar?,
I need to record 150 -mp3 files- into a 700Mb-CD,
and I can´t do it through windows media or

You can buy it from most reputable software retailers, or buy it online from www.ahead.de.

Mac OSX studio?
hello all. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for a freeware music creation program. i'm an Art student who is looking to creat his own sound tracks for video projects. Something similar to fruityloops would be ideal. any suggestions?
Re: Mac OSX studio?
Reason is an option and runs on OSX. Abletons Live is more a live/recording package but could be good.
Both are available in demo form..
OSX is on the cuff of being a great audio platform but we are still waiting for all the big sequencer manufacturers to release OSX versions of their products. Soon though...

Re: Mac OSX studio?
Thanks for the info Steve. Here's another one for you. Would you recommend waiting to buy music software? If so, why? Sounds like an essay, I know, but any help you can give is a great help.
Also, I was thinking about buying reason, but $400 (for reason 2.0) is a hefty price t o pay. I looked at ther demo, and I barely had time to scope it out. Is reason worth it?
Thanks again in advance
James

Try SpectraScope. Much cheaper than CEP, and it's a full-on analyzer. Its a descendant of Analfreq. -Chris
I play the keyboard, sound is delayed...
OS: Windows 2K Pro
Soundcard: Live!Value
Program: Cakewalk Express 8
Problem: notes played on a MIDI keyboard sound almost 0.5 second delayed!
This happens only when selecting the soundfont/bank which is wave-based, the one
loaded into memory. The other available banks sound as notes are played, with no delays.
Profiler has been run several times, changes in settings does not seem to
help improving. Also, changing other Audio settings in Cakewalk, like
I/O buffer, numbers of buffers, DMA direct, and so on
do not seem to help.
Driver problem?
MIDI mapping problem?
problem can be corrected in Cakewalk Audio settings?
Where to change settings in the windows control panel to try to improve?
Any settable parameters for the SB?
Dont'know where to fix...
Latency...
Latency isn't uncommon with some cards, I have never heard great things about the Live's latency...

how do i remove vocals from songs
hi
i need software that will enable me to remove the vocals from music tracks so im left with just the instrumentals.....and possibly put other vocals on the original instrumental
PuF
Re: how do i remove vocals from songs
Surely theres some software around that splits the tracks up an' allows ya to remove whatever you wanna?. Someone let me know, 'cos if a tune is recorded in pieces and put together, why can't you split and mess with it later?........
Re: how do i remove vocals from songs
When you listen to a song, which can comprise one or more vocalists, drums, lead and bass guitar, keyboards, possibly even more, how can you possibly tell what instrument is playing what? What happens when two instruments play the same note? Even the human brain can't separate out everything (that's what makes MP3 possible), so a computer hasn't got a chance.
The lastest efforts in the US using top-flight PCs can only achieve 88% accuracy when trying to decode a track containing a single instrument.
So unless some bright spark comes up with a way to identify every note played, then the task is all but impossible.

Hi,
The short usual answer would be that its semi-impossible. The reason you'd get the impossible reply, not only because it is VERY hard and close to impossible to do what you want, but because the question is very frequent. As Andy pointed out, the question is addressed in the Frequently Asked Questions. At any case, Macintorch had a good explaination in a previous reply to someone with a similar question.
Hope that helps,
Hish
Re: how do i remove vocals from songs
If you'd looked slightly to the right of the "post a question" box, you'd have seen the word "Questions" in big bold letters. Just below that is a list of frequently asked questions. What is the first one on the list???

VST to DirectX conversion
Does anyone know if it is possible to use VST plugins and instruments in Logic Audio 5.01 using somesort of converter or wrap-around?
I like your idea.
Are you using a Mac or PC ?
If you have a PC, you might be able to use Virtual Audio Cable as
additional sound drivers for duplicating and routing the VST audio.
There's a little freeware kit called AnalogBox which is also useful for running plug-ins. It's a little technical, but not if you're only using it for one input, a plug-in, and an output. I like AnalogBox because it can run plug-in modules when Cubasis chokes on them for some (REGISTRY) reason.
On a Mac, with OMS you could probably duplicate and route at least the MIDI. There's a program called UglyVSTi which is a shell for VST instruments. I know there are other similar instruments programs.
Also, D-Sound Pro has OMS MIDI capabilities and can play Audio files via MIDI. I'd suggest those for starters.

: Does anyone know if it is possible to use VST plugins and instruments in Logic Audio 5.01 using somesort of converter or wrap-around?
Hi,
First, I dont use Logic Audio, but I assume its the same method if you want to use VST plug-ins in ACID or other software like that. The answer is yes, but unfortunately, I cant remember the name of the plug-in, something along the lines of VST-DX Wrapper. If noone beats me to answer you with the exact name if that is not it, then I'll email you when I get home (at work now ;)) once I check out the name in my machine. As far as I know, that's not the only one either, there are more than can do the job. You load the wrapper just like you would load any other plug-in, and it'll prompt you then to browse you HD for VST plug-ins, which you can then choose, load, use, and enjoy!
Hope that helps,
Hish
Re: VST to DirectX conversion
Hish is Spot-on the mark. It's called VST-DX Wrapper, Pro and Lite version are available on this site (go to the plug-ins section) and BTW there is also DirectiXer that will do the same thing.
