you're asking but... No.. you can't make beats
with Word or Notepad or the Windows Calculator.
Why not try installing some beatmaking software
like:

Hammerhead (free) Fruityloops (shareware)
or Tu2 (free) or some software like those ??

Why don't you try out the demo? That's a good way of working out whether it's your thing or not.

It seem like a powerful tool however. The kicker is the price, $399 for Reason 2.0. I'm willing to thrown down the money for it, but only if it is worth the investment. Is it worth it? I hate to ask this, but with an ASR-10, why are you fussing around
with Cubasis? The ASR-10 is like the greatest keyboard of all time.
It's not perfect, but it's loaded with features and advanced capabilities, even for today. It's sequencer has like 600,000 notes and you could layer 128 samples on every key. Whassup? If it were me, I'd find the
Cubasis printed manual and read it. (It's not so big, I used to have one).

After that, if i didn't have any clues, I'd just scour every menu and
button of Cubasis. If you can't find the record button on the transport
window, then maybe you have a demo version of Cubasis and not the real deal. I know the Mac Cubasis demo is very stripped down (no audio capabilities). If you get sick of trying Cubasis, you should
download and try DDCLip Pro. Sure, I always say that, but it's really
easy to use, and much safer to install than ProTools. Overdubbing is
much easier. I never learned how to do overdubs in Cubasis without
signal routing isssues either, and I tried REALLY hard. I just can't afford to waste my time on ONE program. In DDCLIP, you just select the tracks you want to playback, and hit play. Then you hit record when the time is right. I don't even think you have to select a recording track first. At any rate, it has a higher sound resolution and quality, so you should use it anyway. It also has a nice video capability.

I doubt you need tons and tons of tracks if you're using the ASR.

You ARE on the website that has such software for download. http://www.hitsquad.com/smm is the link to where ALL the software is. Just click on the category of software you want to look under, such as 'Multritrack editors, Audio Recorders, Format Convertors, etc...', and then choose your operating system, and you'll get a list of software with their explaination and whether its freeware, shareware, or demo. You can then download the one of your choice. If my memory doesn't fail me, I believe there is a freeware midi to wave convertor in this website. Hope I am not wrong! ;)
