Re: Best Soft for composing a song
Hi,
Its really hard to suggest a 'BEST' software for composing a song. That would be too general. It still depends on what kind of music you are looking into making to help decide. You asked about the largest number of intruments, and you also asked to be able to customize the sounds or samples yourself as well as write the molody yourself. You also asked for an 'easy-to-understand/intuitive interface' software. In that case, my BEST suggestion would be 'Propellerhead Reason'. Its a very comprehensive piece of software with superb quality. Very easy to understand coz its interface is a great simulation of the actual hardware. The sound quality is excellent, and you can make everything from percussions, beats, to bass, piano, cellos, synth, etc. You can sequence it all, you can use midi, and the list goes on... In short based on your brief description, I think Reason would be one of your best choices.
Hope that helps,
Hish
Mackintosh . OS X
Does anybody know how to msolve this problem.
I use an Apple ibook, "operating system OS X"
I have Steinberg Cubase 5.1
The audio works O K.
But i have no Midi.
Due to the fact that every time i try to set up a studio
useing OMS. the computer crashes.
i have been on to Arbiter who sell the Steinberg programme.
And also i have been on to Apple products division
but they have nobody who can awnser that question.
Is there anybody in the world who has a similar set up as me, one that is working i mean,
I would love to hear from some one who know's for real.
Thanks
Oliver.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the problem lies in a conflict between file drivers
which normally are used in interaction with the serial/MIDI/modem/localtalk/appletalk stuff. Open Transport (OT) and Apple Remote Access (ARA) are very tricky little beasts. On some installations, a system file called Serial Port Arbiter is activated and may or may not successfully negotiate between physical or logical ports.
OMS is another burden on an already tricky (serial) data highway. If you add USB or airport considerations, you've got a very tangled mess, indeed. USB adds a particular twist since so many devices all share the same data path at the same time, much like classic MIDI.
I would try to use software that has it's own built-in MIDI drivers and stop using OMS altogether. Uninstall OMS and be sure to remove every trace of it.
FREEWARE Yank is helpful for getting rid of stuff after installation. If you can run programs successfully after that, then you know that OMS was probably the problem.
Another less popular alternative is to try and use Apple MIDI Manager and Patchbay. This is still supported by many companies. Probably a better alternative would be to use FreeMIDI, which can emmulate OMS to a degree, I have heard.
I've heard that FreeMIDI is a bit less buggy than Apple's MIDI driver, but I don't know for sure. I suggest you contact a music professor at a college who teaches computer-assisted notation or MIDI. These guys typically know exactly what it takes. They probably won't know much about Cubase, but they will know about MIDI and it's issues best. They will probably be running ProTools and Finale, or something like that.
Well good luck. Think about my suggestions.
If you need some alternatives, I'd try Logic Fun (Freeware version of Logic Audio). It is very stable and very advanced. Excellent preferences setup.
Or, you could try ProTools Free (order the CD-ROM in the mail).
Personally, I like Logic Fun more than ProTools.
information required
I am looking for a device which can directly read from an audio cassette and write over the cd in mp3 format.
Re: information required
I don't think such a thing exists, and if it did, it would probably be very expensive. What's wrong with feeding the cassette into the PC through the sound card then converting to MP3?
Andy
Re: information required
There's a useful article on how to go from cassette to Mp3 on the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/">front page</a> of the site.

Hitsquad Update 28 June 2002 - Flu, Email Notifications on Messa
It's been a bit of a slow week at Hitsquad and some of
the announcements I promised last week will have to be
held over untill next time because it's the middle of
winter here and the flu has worked its way through the
Hitsquad crew.
Despite that we did manage 110 software listing updates
in the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/">download area</a> of the site.
The biggest news is that we have rolled out a new Email
Notification service for this discussion forum that
lets you know when someone has replied to a message you
posted.
You just have to tick the box right above the
"Post Message" button and an email will automatically
be sent to you when someone replies to your message.
If you decide you don't want to receive any more emails
for that message you can block any further notifications
by following the simple instructions you get in each
email the system sends you.
We've only put it on this one discussion forum for the
time being as the system is currently in beta testing
stage - we'll wait to we see what some of the
side-effects are before rolling it out across our other
8000+ forums.
'Till next week....

Faster than I thought! ;)
Hey,
I didn't expect to have the email notification aspect implemented already, but it sure is great! ;) I think we all owe a thanks to Jason Horton for bringing in the change soon after Steve's post, and a thanks to Steve for bringing the topic up with hot intensity! ;) This will definetly insure that in most cases the person who posted a question will actually receive a reply, which makes us all feel good.
Thanks again,
Hish
Re: Faster than I thought! ;)
Hi Hish,
Actually this wasn't done in direct response to SteveR's
post the other day, but it was one of his suggestions
many months ago (<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/wwwboard/messages/102680.html">see this as an example</a>).
Although, his post a couple of days ago did cause me to
decide to implement the feature even though we know it
still has some wrinkles we need to iron out.
Email notification is one of several upgrades to this
discussion forum that were all planned at the same time
beginning with the list of questions not to be asked,
followed by a search engine, and now email notification.
I can say that the one feature requested in the threads
a few months back that we probably won't run with is
the requirement to register before being allowed to
post messages.
This is because after reading all the discussions here,
and the discussions in the office, the majority vote
seems to be people don't want yet another password they
have to remember - I know I don't.
But as I've said before please keep the suggestions coming,
when there is general agreement they will be introduced
if they can be.
Jason.

Good work... ;)))
Er... 8000+ forums?? for real...??
I hope it works out. It's a god send at the moment...
Well done

Re: Hitsquad Update 28 June 2002 - Flu, Email Notifications on M
SteveR,
It was thanks to your suggestions we brought forward
the schedule for notifications - we were going to wait
until we had some other features built into the system.
And yes we run more than 8000 forums - I'm at home at
the moment so I don't have the exact figures but here's
a rough breakdown:
- here on SMM we have one for each software listing, that's more than 4000
- on MP3Machine.com we have one for each software listing, about 1000
- on GuitarSite.com we have one for each 2000 Guitars Database listing which is about 3000
There are a few others too.
I sometimes smile when I see people talking about the
original version of the software that runs our system
of message boards - Matt probably wouldn't recognize
the code if he saw what we've done to it over the years:)
Jason.

loading music onto computer
how do i load music onto my computer like my friends freestyles and how would i upload it onto like the internet and stuff
?!
: how do i load music onto my computer like my friends freestyles and how would i upload it onto like the internet and stuff
Hi,
I am not sure I completely understand your question. It seems to me that you are asking how to download and upload files, and specifically music files from the internet. If you are talking about downloading music files. there are many sites where you can download music files, but perhaps if you can refine your question, I can help you further. What kind of music files are you looking for? Are you looking to download 'pirated' songs? If so, then I am sorry, but I won't be able to help you. If not, and for example you just want to download something like your 'friends feestyle', i.e. Amateur music, then there are MANY sites that offer that, here's a few:-
www.mp3.com
www.ampcast.com
www.iuma.com
www.mp3station.com
www.garabeband.com
www.tonos.com
www.tranceinspace.com
...<i>and much more</i>
Finally, if you want to UPLOAD your music to a site so people can hear it, then the sites I mentioned above will ALSO do for the job. Most of them will give u a page and free space for free, so u can publish your songs online and invite people to hear it, etc...
Hope that helps,
Hish

Re: looking for roland r8 soundcards
Check out eBay www.ebay.com
and type in "roland r8" or "roland r-8" in the search box. Once listing appears, type search words again in the search box and also check mark the box next to "in titles and descriptions" to get all possible postings.
Good luck!

Web Site music
I have different music on each of my web site links. I'm looking for a source to purchase more music that I can use on my site. The music I use is MIDI and I really don't know the difference between MIDI/WAVE/MP3 or ???
What is important is whether you have music of the 40's/50's/60's and 70's that I can save to file to use on my site?
I appreciate any help and time you may give me.
Thank you.

Re: Web Site music
For commercial music from the 40s-70s you would be dealing with lisense issues. WAV is an uncompressed audio format and generally the format used to record highest quality digital audio; MP3 is a compressed format but suitable for what you want to do, as is MIDI if you can find the song(s) you want in that format (more likely to be in MP3 format). www.alltheweb.com has an MP3 search facility.

PlayJ Conversion
Is there a utlity that can convert PlayJ File (ext .plj) to mp3 or Wav??? Pliz help!!
Re: PlayJ Conversion
: Is there a utlity that can convert PlayJ File (ext .plj) to mp3 or Wav??? Pliz help!!
Unfortunately if you could find a way it would be
illegal because the .plj format is copy-protected
and all the music was legally licensed.
We had sub-licenses for music from over 3000 artists
that we secured through PlayJ's parent company
but they couldn't generate significant revenue
and didn't renew their licenses with record
companies.
I never saw the primary licenses myself but I
suspect your end-user agreement means no longer
have the legal right to even listen to PlayJ
encoded songs, let alone circumvent a copy-protection
mechanism.
Jason.
Re: PlayJ Conversion
I believe PlayJ is out of business. A time-consuming way of converting would be use a program like <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/TotalRecorder/">TotalRecorder</a>. It'll capture the audio as a WAV.

I just lost my "Just Audio" as well though the other components still work. I am also trying to find out how to restore it. Let me know if you have any luck.

I am simply hooked to Kazaa...ad cant even think of my computer without this splendid software.
hook, line, and sinker.
You are a dumbass.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion
: You are a dumbass.
Hi,
I understand what Kazaa is used mostly for, but its a
software you can download from Hitsquad aswell. It
CAN be used legally. If someone just commented on how
much they like the software, I personally see nothing
wrong with that, so I don't see a reason for the direct
insult. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Don't get me wrong, I am not for downloading pirated
software either, but having Kazaa installed and 'LIKING'
it is legal as far I know.
Thanks,
Hish
P.S. No offense intended!

copying 78rpm records at slower speed and restoring?
Greetings - I have some 78rpm records but my turntable only runs at 33 and 45. I am wondering if there is some software where I could record the 78rpm at 45 or 33 and then restore it to the correct speed?
Also, I have reel-to-reel tape decks that can record and playback at various speeds. Anyone know if the tape deck speeds (1 7/8, 3 3/4, 7 1/8) come close to turntable speeds? Well, I can always just experiment with this alternative. Thanks for any help you could provide. Rod
Re: copying 78rpm records at slower speed and restoring?
Howdy there Rod,
As it's already been suggested, you'll need to speed up the 78/45 file. If you want to be really precise, note that the 78s are actually cut at 78.26rpm in the 60Hz power areas (like USA), and at 77,92rpm in the 50Hz areas (most of Europe).
More importantly, as digital speed-up transform isn't a lossless process, the quality of it depends on how a software does it.
Before the speed-up, do a "DC Remove" to bring all the sub-audible samples to zero.
For example, the Diamond Cut Software(Dc-Art), comes with some handy presets for such speed manipulations. However, Cool Edit Pro does it with a clearly better quality.
Though, I must say the CEP's time/pitch/stretch panel works rather backward; the correct ratio for a 45-to-78.26rpm transfer is 57.5. Other CEP settings in the strech panel are: Constant Stretch/Transpose=none/ Precision=High/Resample.
Now, you might want to save these settings while at it.
In fact, you can make an even higher quality speed-up transfers by first upconverting the 16-bit 78/45 input file into a 32-bit one, then doing the speed-up, and finally downconverting the file back to a 16-bit format.
Okay, that may be an overkill as far as the original quality of the signal is concerned.
Cheers,
Leo B.
Interesting...
If you play a 78 record at 33-1/3, you can record it into your computer, then pitch shift it up by 2.34
I'm not sure about the tape speeds you mentioned, but I know that
they represent inches per second.
pitch bending without a pitch bend command
I forgot to add, you can also take a 44.1kHz rate recording and SET the sample rate (change the file header data without resampling) to be 2.34 * 44100. After that, RESAMPLE to 44.1kHz and burn to CD.
Re: pitch bending without a pitch bend command
What software do I need to accomplish pitch bending in the manner you describe? I too have 78rpm recordings, but only 33 & 45 speeds on my turntable.
