convert midi control change message?

I am having some difficulty with my setup and was wondering if anyone could
help. I am a guitar player and am using a Yamaha MFC 10 MIDI pedalboard to
change presets on my effects. I am also currently using the pedalboard to
send MIDI note-on note-off messages to play samples from a computer in my
guitar rig.

The problem is that there are times that I'd like the sample to play in its
entirety without holding the pedalboard button down for the entire length of
the sample. This pedalboard always transmits a note off message when the
button is released.

This got me thinking of alternate ways of doing this. Is there any software
for a PC that will receive a MIDI controller change message and will
substitute different information - basically if the computer receives a
certain control change number it will send a MIDI note on, hold it for
awhile, and finally send the note off.

I have a feeling this is a novice problem. Like I said, I'm a guitar
player...

Gigastudio & Pianos

I am currently in the process of recording a lot of jazz / smooth jazz
music. While everything is going well, the pianos we have used (synth
based as well as live recorded pianos) are not high enough quality for
our needs.

After listening to MP3's of Bardstown Audio's Bosendorfer Imperial
Grand Piano (http://www.bardstownaudio.com/), this piano sounds
awesome. I visited several gigastudio specific forums and have a good
feeling on what it takes to get gigastudio up and running -- however,
I would like opinions from others (outside of those already head-deep
into gigastudio) if this is a good solution (ie does it really play
like a live piano or will there be a lot of tweaking involved in
getting a realistic sound, etc..) or are there other solutions
(modules, digital pianos, etc..) that would provide a similar level of
realism.

John,

I am a user who is not "head-deep" into gigastudio. I'm a fairly light
user. I just use it for acoustic piano sounds. It works very well
overall for me but there are some things worth mentioning.

First, a big concern is the affect of playing at different velocities.
I found the GigaPiano not usable out of the box. The transitions
between timbres when changing from loud to soft or vice versa are too
abrupt using my controller. Some users have written about changing
controller velocity curves, and I've tried my four built-in settings,
and that wasn't enough to get a natural sound from GigaPiano. I've had
much better luck with the Malmsjo piano sample, and I now use it
exclusively, but it is best for Classical music and Ballads Jazz, and
not so good for heavier Jazz like Bop. In general, piano MP3 samples
are set up to present the piano samples at their best, and you don't
really tune in to the weaknesses until you play them solo.

A second thing is that even with my light-weight use of gigastudio
(one instrument at a time), I sometimes (it's rare) get "fill-up" when
I press the sustain pedal and play a lot of notes. My PC has 256MB
RAM, 40GB hard drive at 7200 rpm and the hard drive is not dedicated
to sound samples as many power users recommend. For me it is a small
annoyance that I can avoid fairly naturally.

Manual dexterity

I don't have a manual anymore, but I remember enough about
the program to run it. It's really not as complex as it
looks. I mean, you can make it more complex if you want,
but it makes sense to me to do what comes easily fast.

If Cubasis is slowing you down so much, maybe you are working
so ambitiously. If you still need a manual, you should go to
Steinberg.com and order one.

If you can get Cubasis to play a song, then in time
you'll figure out the rest. The best way to learn is
by experimentation.

Volume equalization

I need to burn several MP3s to audio and they all have different volume levels (some of them sound way louder than the others). Is there a way to make all of them sound equally loud? I use Nero 5.5 to burn my cds. Tks.

Making the songs the same volume is called normalization. I believe <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Nero_win32/">Nero</a> has a normalize feature. So does <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/DartCDRecorder/">DART</a>.

Midi files conversion to Clavinova music file format

I own an old Clavinova CVP55. I would like to convert MIDI music files (that I download from internet for instance) into a format which can be read by my Clavinova keyboard (through the disket)... Does somebody know a converter ? Thanks.

Hi, I got a CVP205 and everything I download from the net can be played directly by the clavinova (either via midi/sequencer or via diskette). I think the internal sequencer can play it as long as it's a type 0 midifile (SMF)

Just found this, or re-discovered this program that will edite in MP3 format...

Since it is free, have a look, and experiment with your MP3 file, however it will not handle your entire album as the limit on the free version appears to be 7 minutes.

Yes it may be a tease program - but it does have some functions that might be very useful to a DJ using MP3 files in the free version.

How do i get my Logic Sounds on CD

I have 3 versions of Emagic Audio platinum 4.5, 4.8.1 ahd Logic 5 I also use Acid pro 3.0 the only thing is that with acid you can render your songs to various formats from MP3 to whatever then burn them onto CD But with Logic I havent the faintest idea how to do this I am a up and coming artist/producer/songwriter and i am currently doing tracks in logic for my wife's group and a Rapper but i cant seem to get the tracks to CD so they can write or perform to them.
HELP ME PLEASE I have midiand audio within my songs how i get them on CD.

I've got Cubase VST/32. I would like to import wavefiles to cubase, but unfortunately it doesn't work. When I open the "import audio" - box, the "Play"-botton is dimmed (unable to push). Do anyone know whats wrong?

Well, I just stumbled onto a nice litte freeware document which
basically tells all there is to know about setting up a MacOS for
anything from System 7 to System 8. It's a searchable dictionary of
extensions, control panels, shared libraries, and the like.

If you have something odd in your system folder and you want to know
what it is and who uses it, this program is good for you. Of course,
I don't know if there is a System 9, or X version of it, but still,
it's so educational that I'm sure it would help out some of those system
users too.

Anybody struggling with Mac crashes and using anything from
System 7 to System 8.x should go to <A HREF="http://www.mac.org">www.mac.org</a>
and look for this.

This could make turning your mac into a studio much easier.

I want to use my VST Plugins, and I can't find anywhere in the instructions on how to open them. I know it can use them because the program came with a VST Plugin folder. How Do I open and use the damn things???

The VstPlugIns folder should be named "VstPlugIns" and reside in the same place as the Logic Application. Put all the VST effects and instruments in there.

On the Track Mixer of MicroLogic, click and hold on one of the buttons just below the EQ (same on each track). Hold the mouse down and a list should pop up of the Logic Effects and any VST compatible ones. Make sure you have some audio playing on that track..

One last thing? Does MicroLogic support VST plugins? I think Logic AV does... Check the literature.

Well, for starters, put your VST plug-ins into the VST Plugin folder.
I encountered this same problem when trying to use modules in a few PC
multitrackers. On both types of computers, the modules end up having an
expected place to be. Sometimes the preferences files get confused too.
To activate them in your multitrack program, you'll probably need to be
looking at a mixer window and playing around with it's buttons.

On a mac, it helps to scan for hidden commands by holding down the
option key, command key, shift key, or control key while clicking on
a box or menu. These modifier keys usually open up hidden options or
commands. Too many programs use this feature and forget to tell us!
Another trick is to turn on the help balloons from the menu and move
the cursor around very very slowly above your mulitrack window. Little
help bubbles should pop up explaining everything (hopefully).

Well, the last thing to say about plug-ins is that they don't always
work. There are different flavors of VST, and some are specifically
designed for a particular program and version. Other VST modules are
universal, but aren't correctly implemented, so they fail.

When it comes down to it, VST modules are kind of sly. I once even
found a VST module that featured a tiny little video game ! Of course
this is totally irrelevant to my multitrack system, but it just shows
how strange VST modules can get.

Oh, and you must be sure you're trying to load up <b>MAC</b> VST
plug-in modules and not PC ones.

how to trigger Samples in your PC ? Software ??

I wanna trigger samples in my PC with trigger pads. I dont want to buy a drum module for $800. Isnt there a software wich allows you to trigger wave or mp3 file on you PC. Please mail me.

I don't know much about trigger pads, but I'm sure it can be done. But you might want to start looking around in the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/SOFTWARE_SAMPLERS/">sampling software section</a> on this site.

Not every CD is protected. In any event, you should be made aware of copy-protection when you purchase the disc. Anyway, I recently started playing with <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Cdex/">CDex</a> - good software.
