Hardware tip please
Hello music lovers!
I'm an amateur musician and I want to make some music on my PC. I have loads
of ideas and the skill, to some extent..., but I draw a complete blank in
the hardware and technical departement.
What I want to do is to buy some sample CDs with some sounds and drum-loops,
set up my own sound library based on those sounds, and make some music with
the aid of a sequencer program. Of course, it's laughingly easy if you know
how, but I don't...
My question is this: What piece of hardware should I go for? Soundcard,
sampler, sound module, synthesizer, soft sampler...? I find that most synths
come with loads of preinstalled sounds (that I don't need or like very much)
and very little expansion capability, but I'm looking for the complete
opposite: Very few sounds, if any, and as much memory as electronically
possible...
Any specific ideas as to what sort of electronic gadget-thingy I should take
a closer look at? Any help will be much appreciated!
Re: Hardware tip please
QUOTE: "Of course, it's laughingly easy if you know
how, but I don't..."
It's rarely laughingly easy, even if you know your system. My experience with Windows and music is quite the opposite. Even with the Mac G4 there are issues of hardware verses software solutions and making some software work (buggy often) with hardware can be a trial. Once it's up and running, you will still have a lot to think about.
I have an external sampler/synth like Andy (not the same one) and it's easy enough to rely on that as a sample player and editor.
I use SCSI from the G4 to the Sampler and then use Peak (Mac audio editor) to mess with the samples and then send them to the sample using SCSI SMDI sample transfer. This misses out on the sometimes average audio inputs on some samplers and relies on the far better audio inputs on the Mac's audio card solution.
Get a sampler and a decent audio input/output on the PC. M-Audio make some great and affordable cards. Use the SMDI transfer protocol from a decent audio editor and then go forth and make a tune.
Also, there is a program called Translator from Chicken Systems that converts wave's to sampler specific formats. Worth checking out.

Re: Hardware tip please
The only problem I have with PC-based kit is that the soundcards sound pretty thin and 'artificial'. There is no way I'd use one for serious composition work, but there again it depends on what you intend to do with your music when you've made it.
As for me, I'll stick with my MIDI setup, which is a controller keyboard (my old faithful Prophet VS) and my racks (Akai S3000 and two Yamaha TF1s). That way I can add expression through the velocity/aftertouch, and can layer sounds to give them more depth.
Andy
Hmmm... I dunno, but it gets me thinking
Get whatever you can, whenever you can for computer
music software, and use any soundcard that will run on
your system without hassles. Since recording onto your PC is troubled at worst, and temporary at best, buy
an external CD-recorder.
Ok. There's the answer. Now I'll tell you what I originally
started pondering:
PC's are fun, but you sound direct and to the point.
Making music on a PC is anything but direct and to the
point. All PC's crash or get infected with bugs or viruses.
If you just want to make music, get a hardware multitrack recorder
with a built-in CD-burner, unless you already have a CD recorder deck.
With one of these, you could start making music immediately, and have
your results saved on a standard CD you can play anywhere. Computers
get tricky fast because of all those file formats and storage media forms.
Also you have to worry about system requirements and bugs and upgrades and
lots of mysterious errors.
If you have a stand-alone hard disk recorder multitrack, then you have a
portable solution which can be used for overdubbing, recording, and editing.
They are designed not to crash. They also have mixers and effects.
If you addicted to all the goodies on the computer off the net, then just
keep your computer too. The days that your computer is working, you can
record onto your multitrack studio. Be sure to burn CD's of your work, so
that you can keep working on your songs if your equipment breaks or gets
stolen. Never leave your songs just on a hard drive or on a zip disk or
smart card, or cassette, or minidisc. CD's are the way to go, and computers
can read them.
I would treat your computer like a great drum machine, not
like a multitrack or sampler. Even though there are tons of free
VST synths floating around now, I think hardware synths are easier
to get unusual sounds from and play melodies at the same time. Some
software synths sound awesome, but they can't be played easily.
Computers seem to make good drum machines, but terribly there aren't
enough drum machine types of softwares. Still, any editor can be used
as a drum machine once you have some audio files to copy and paste.
Multitracks can get too complex too fast. I have used Cubasis VST and
Tuareg and DDClip a lot. I swear by them. On the Mac I enjoy Logic Fun,
SoundSampler II, and some editors. Still, I worked a lot faster when I
had hardware devices linked up with MIDI cables. I just recorded via a
mixer to a minidisc deck. I'd do some basic song structure edits on the
minidisc deck, then transfer to CD. Unfortunately, minidisc isn't really
an option much anymore in the US. Later, I got a 4 track hard disk recorder
and some optical cables, so I did lots of transferring between minidisc and the
multitrack. Then I'd burn to the CD-recorder from the digital multitrack.
Nowadays I don't have any of that. I'm definately making much more advanced
sounds on the computer, but my music has suffered. I don't get a chance to
quickly exercise my musical ideas unless i go play the piano. The computer just
slows me down. I do like the advanced sounds, though, and VST reverbs can sound
much better than anything in a rack, even at 44.1k 16bits. If you get a 192kHz soundcard,
then you'll be glad if you get locked into a computer system.
Overall, you should consider how much money you can and should spend.
I never like spending more than 200 dollars on anything ever. That pretty
much shuts me down looking at typical catalogs nowadays. The best gear I've
dealt with was always around 200 dollars for each thing. Effects unit-200.
Good used drum machine--200. Good 96kHz sound card--200. Good used sequencer--200.
Good cheap mixer--200.
Some things cost more like 400 to 600 dollars, but unless it's really gonna be
the heart of my operation, i don't like it. Anything that costs as much as an
automobile is already ridiculous.
Well, I'm losing sight of my point. Let me recoil.
Originally, you said you want to make music on your PC.
I've been telling you to pretty much NOT use your PC, but
I guess i should tell you what you want to hear.
Get whatever you can, whenever you can for computer
music software, and use any soundcard that will run on
your system without hassles. Since recording onto your PC is troubled at worst, and temporary at best, buy
an external CD-recorder.

Could anybody please advise me on how to connect a stereo audio source to
the USB port of a notebook computer. All I want to do is digitise analogue
cassette recordings in stereo. The problem is that my notebook does not
have a line input and I can't afford expensive add-ons.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Need suggestions for orchestral work!
For years I've wanted convincing orchestral sounds. I've been using the
Roland SC-88 for a long, long time. Finally sold my baby. :(
So... now what? I want GOOD orchestral sounds, good polyphony, but not a
huge pain in the arse "tweaking" instruments to make them sound decent. And
I'm not rich, so GigaStudio + $5000 samples is out. Very out. ;)
I was thinking Roland/Edirol SC-8820/8850 or SD-90, but I'm not so convinced
that's a big step up from the SC-88.
I'd consider the JV-1010 (+orch board) or XP-30 but I've heard of the
"tweaking" involved and am a little nervous in the "ease of use"
department.....
I know Roland, I don't know the competition... I need your help folks. :)
What would you suggest for good orchestral composition for acoustic
instruments in movie-soundtrack-fashion?
Say E-MU Virtuoso2000 and I'll stick my tongue out at you.... that this had
horrible reviews, and rightly so! Yecch! :-p
legato is not a pet name for a pussycat.
Personally, I have used a few sample CD's from EastWest.
These international sample CD suppliers have lots to choose from
in all genres. I have found that for some styles, it's better to
totally ignore MIDI quantization and just use strategic layers of raw
sounds. This is especially true for strings. It doesn't hurt to
find a real musician for an overdub or samples either. Sampling isn't
so hard, really. But most people are afraid to try it live. Just
make sure to give the people you sample credit on your album, and/or
pay them appropriately.
Re: Need suggestions for orchestral work!
I'm using the sound-canvas Roland PMA-5.
A beauty!!!!

Re: Need suggestions for orchestral work!
Dear Thomas
The Sound Canvas sc-88 have good sounds for 1990. Sc-88 pro is an upgrade and same is sc-8850 is sc-88 pro with steroids.
Despite the 1600 instruments sc8850 it is not comparable with sd-90. I know the sd-90 not have the rewiew but i will advice to buy and use the sd-90. The SD-90 is all you want in a box but with actual sampling sounds and facilities.
Best regards,
Chris
Re: Need suggestions for orchestral work!
But.... but the PMA-5 has sounds equal to the original Sound Canvas, a
downgrade from the old SC-88 I had. I want to go UP not down!
(of course, the PMA-5's strongpoint is in its portability, not its sounds.)
Orchestral mainly folks, but maybe a smattering of pop.

Re: Need Help with buying equipment
Patrick,
firstly, I don't think what your getting
is a bargain by any means.
It's just (fairly dated) MIDI keyboard and will not let you control anything.
I'm not sure whether you have a standard MIDI (Joystick type connection) or a USB Midi connection....
In otherwords you need to know whether you can connect the device you're looking for to your current PC Setup.
Check out the following MIDI controllers....
Phatboy.....www.gmedia.com
Kenton Control Freak...www.kenton.co.uk
Oxygen 8 (Keyboard and controls)
You don't mention the s/w you want to use.
I'd recommend any of the following...
Propellerhead - Reason and Rebirth
Orion Pro - brilliant cheap VST host.
Finally the bad news....
Your PC will most likely need to be upgraded
if you want to run some serious audio applications
as they really hog the CPU....and RAM
Happy hunting.

Patrick,
If i were you i should do both: buy the stuff and upgrade your PC. I'd
offer no more than 89 pounds for the lot. For a starters the midi keyboard
is always usefull, the same counts for the alpha. I own a MT-32 myself and i
really like the pad (synth) sounds in it. You can edit your own sounds (only
via PC). I use the sounds in ambient, sound scape like music.
To run music programmes on the PC, you really need to upgrade as well. A
Pentium 700 Mhz with 256 ram wil be a good start. Being a starter myself I
can still do almost anything with my SoundBlaster Live soundcard. Besides
that i'll advise two hard drives (system/programme and data).
With your soundcard and midi keyboard you can use soundfonts and start
sampling. There are also lots of freeware soft synths on the net. And with
a software sequencer like Cubasis or Cakewalk you can really start off.
Hope this helps a little,
Good luck,
Jan

No idea what is the best for what you're doing, but its a good job you
didn't go for the MT32 cos that certainly isn't up to the job!

Re: Need Help with buying equipment
I wouldn't buy it... the Evolution is only £120 new, the MT32 is pretty much
worthless, and no one seems to use the Art Alpha SE...

Hi,
aside from the fact this is not the place for such inqueries. I think it'll be helpful if you included some info, like what style of music you are looking into, geographic location, etc..unless you are seeking collaborations over the internet. In that case, I MIGHT be interested. Email me at rockwaves@hotmail.com and let me know.
Thanks,
Hish
How do you go about getting your music heard?
Whats going on? I know I'm new to the forum and all, but I've been in the game for so long, man, I'm kinda getting fed up with everyone telling me to get a real job. Whats a real job anyway man? I'd rather mess around with my new M box then freaking flip burgers over a flame, you know what I'm saying? Man!! I just want to be heard, you know!!! I'm damn good at the controls, and I write my own stuff (I'm sure most of you guys do to!), why can't I be the next George Martin with The Beatles, huh? Do any of you guys have any tips on getting my stuff heard? I've been passing around my stuff for so many years, I'm fed up man. I just checked out that new program Inside Sessions, I'm sure you guys have heard of it. Its actually pretty informative, I bought the Music Business session, and I got to hear like secrets from Glen Ballad, A & R's, and a bunch of artists that discuss how they got in the business and what it takes to succeed. I thought it was a bunch of BS at first, but I gave it a chance and found it to be very informative. I would most definitely recommend it to any up and coming producer to peep out. Now that I have shared a secret with you guys, what can ya'll tell me about the game?
Sneak your CD in record stores without their permission; reverse
Some genres are probably easier to get into than others.
For example, there are lots of guitarists out there, but
not many of them try to shack up with industrial or electronic
bands. This is too bad, because some of these bands really
need them. Another example: A live drummer who can play
drum and bass or trip hop or breakbeats. I have had the pleasure
of meeting the drummer for Poor Line Condition in St. Paul,
MN. This man can actually play deeply complex and layered beats that
I thought only machines could create. He is awesome. Someone like
that could probably do well as a session player in the right niche.
Another example: Quawali and Hindi singers who agree to sing in other
genres (a bit like Bhangra). Basically, in the states, anybody bilingual
could be a powerful asset as a vocalist if they have style. So many
Americans can only speak English, so the multilingual ability is totally
cool for both performance and lyric writing. I had a Japanese friend who
was very fluent in English, and is superbly talented with poetry in both
English and Japanese. However, I couldn't convince him to help me write
a bilingual song, or to translate my ideas into Japanese. This is a shame,
because maybe we could've created some groundbreaking material for some part
of the world.
People into Hip hop are always needing cool riffs to rap over, so if you create
a library of riffs at various BPMs then you are more likely to be able to convince
a rapper to work with you. I'm mentioning all of these collaborations because
I think it takes a team effort to make a star. Also, many labels to song casting:
They pick different musicians/writers for different tasks. If you specialise well,
and you're nich is in demand, then it could work out.
I have a buddy who plays cello really well, but he refuses to do anything with his
talents. It's too bad, because you'd be surprised at how many pop artists write
live string parts. I wonder who played cello for the Beatles?
well, you catch my meaning. good luck, brother.

How do I convert .sfk files to something else?
A friend compressed a .wav as a .sfk to send it to me -is there a program that will turn it back into something I can use?
automatic double-tracking
Is there a program that can add automatic double-tracking to a recorded wave file (eg a vocal part).
thanks
Re: automatic double-tracking
I think many people just use different types of chorus or pitch shift or detune or flange.
One thing I like to do is mix a vocal part with a slightly sped up and slightly delayed copy.
You can experiment also with a slightly slowed down and slightly early copy too. When you start
panning and mixing you can end up with professional results. Keep the fullest and clearest copy
panned to center though. Be sure to listen to the results in mono, to be sure that you aren't just
washing the vocals down the drain with too much glistter.
I must say, though... I've overheard engineers say over and over that nothing
beats just overdubbing another copy of the vocal part. If you make a mistake, just
don't use that particular section of the overdub. Make a composite mix.
Re: automatic double-tracking
Thanks for your reply
I think it would be easier just to record another live track, rather than fiddling around. Shame there's no utility than automatically do it
double dragon
Different recording engineers do doubling different ways.
Some people like it in stereo, others don't. Some like it biphonic, others don't.
Anything that makes the second track unlike an exact copy of the first track
could be used as a doubler. It's all about time and amplitude imperfections, and
a bit of spectre (naturally changing natural EQ).
Sometimes it's just a backup singer too!
