Attention all Mac users, Free multitrack recording with Authenti
Attention Mac users:
There is a way to get FREE multitrack capabilities with an unregistered copy of AS Studio, best of all, it's 100% legal :)
All you need is a simple audio recorder, one that will work in the background of other applications.
It's all quite simple, all you got to do is record all your tracks with AS Studio, then bring them into your mix as you normally would. Now, since you have an unregistered copy, you'll be unable to save your mix, so all you gotta do get your mix ready, (it's important that you be 100% sure that your song is mixed properly), now open up your other recording program, set the input to the mic setting.
Now, there's a litte wire behind your mac that leads from the line output to the speakers, unplug that wire and run it from the line output to the line input. Check to make sure your program is getting it's own signal, be sure to turn off the playthrough, than just hit play on ASS and hit record on your recorder. Voila, a finnished product, absolutely free.

it seem to me that you tried to upgrade the software using the roland upgrade midi files ???
this message is not in the book
i think that you have to do a total factory reset
also good news
Well, my 840 is out of warranty (3 years old!) so I got my screwdriver out tonight and tried something I've been thinking about for some time.
I took the bottom off, unplugged the zip and fitted a normal ide cable to an old 210MB ide hard-drive I have lying about. The 840 doesn't have a 12v supply so I had to rig up an adapter cable to feed the 12v from an external power supply to the 4-way plug on the HDD.
I switched the 12v on.
I switched the 840 on.
The drive spun up!
The 840 offered to initialise it.
I said Yeh!
It said I got 80 minutes in mt1, 106 in mt2.
In mt2 I recorded 4 tracks at once, then set them to play while recording the two stereo tracks. No drive busy error.
Still won't let you record more than 2 tracks in mt1 though
As I currently only have a 100Meg zip I am most happy with this. I don't see why this won't work with any hdd up to 2gig! I'll get hold of a 500MB drive soon.
I plan to fit a removable drive box to the 840 ide cable and also one in my pc. The hdd goes in a caddy and I can then back-up my songs on the pc. I don't see why any of this shouldn't work. I might even fit the zip in a caddy.
Obviously, you can't eject the hdd, but select shut down and the drive spindle stops!
It's really quite cool!
Something good had to happen today. The 17" monitor on my studio pc blew up! I have swap-out warranty on it but I'll have to use a 14" spare till next week. Unreal Tounament looks really poxy on that! Oops... what a give away...
Is this a first or am I talking old hat?
could not wait for your reply
tried it and YES it works
the zip is indeed an IDE just need 12 v from old PC supply
formating worked as you said used a 850 mb drive better and cheaper than zip !
THANK YOU
will experiment further , I guess it will take up to 9gig ?? or 2 gig not sure
THANKS

Problems Burning Data CDs with Nero 5.0.2.2
Can't get Nero to record Data files - including mp3s -from my hard disk correctly ("C: to E:"). It DOES record them, but then some of the files on the burnt CD prove to be unreadable (eg. cannot be copied back to the hard disk). The "unreadable" files vary, from which I deduce that the original files themselves are fine (and closer inspection bears this out). Curiously Nero works well with "on the fly" audio copies - which I would have thought was more complicated ("D: to E: via C:?") but I'm no expert on these matters. Is there an "optimum" setting for the recording of Data Files in Nero ? Are there more reliable free/shareware programs out there that I should try ? I would love a program that could extract and convert CD audio tracks burning them as mp3s directly. And, purely out of curiosity, are mp3 files notoriously more difficult to burn than other data files ? My CD-Recorder is AOpen 9632. I have a Pentium, W98 PC. Any suggestions appreciated as this is driving me mad
WinMedia encoder for Mac
Does anyone know how I can convert to WMA from CD audio, SDII, WAV or AIFF on a Mac G4?
Bass line generator
Short of useing a real Bass guitar what can I use to do a nice punchy Bassline? Thanks
Bass in your face london.
In the VST environment, use VB-1 with a low-pass filter: prosoniq's NorthPole set to 21 low-pass with all the delay/distortion off.
This is the best option.
Also, the following vsti's are free:
tritium
tau
rainbow
square-1
triangle-1
ces-1
ces-2
ces-3
ces-4
ces-5
and something else, but I forget. it's carp, so it doesn't matter.
Otherwise, it's all about audiomulch.
Re: Bass line generator
It depends on what sort of bass noise you want - you could use the wave generators in Wavelab to make a good clean bass, with two sine waves one octave apart. With a bit of tweaking Rebirth can make some good bass sounds - so long as you up the bass frequecies in an editor of some kind. Or get your hands on a copy of Reason, it'll have all the noises you want.

I've used Rubberduck

Input question for vinyl to CD
I want to make CD's from my copius vinyl repository. Because the output from a Moving Magnet turntable is less than normal line output, do I need a pre-amp between turntable and sound card input or can I compensate for this with software?
I apologize if this is just a newbie question but that happens to be my status at this time.
Thanks for any help,
Mike

Buy "Phono Preamp" this is for all turntables with Moving Magnet, it is connected between your turntable and soundcard. There is also software for sale called "Music Cleaning Lab".

Recording mp3 mixes
I just downloaded Tactile12000 to mix mp3s. I was wondering if you might suggest a good downloadable software program to record my mixes from Tactile to my hard drive or possibly to zip. I would prefer freeware but affordable shareware is always a viable option. I'm quite new at the mp3 mixing game but am having fun so far. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks for the time. BJ
disc drives for music computer?
Hi - I'm in the process of designing the specs for my new computer which will be used exclusively for music production.
I've got a 10GB drive which I intend to use purely for backups etc, but I don't know what would be best for my main disc drive(s).
My brother (who will be assembling the computer for me) reckons I should just get one 40 to 50 GB 7,200rpm ATA 100 drive. I would then use Partition Magic to separate the operating system, programs, and data etc into separate partitions.
BUT - some people have told me this is not ideal for music making, and that I would be better to have two separate 20GB drives (same spec), with one with the operating system and programs on (partitioned), and the other used exclusively for data.
So, does anybody know the best set up, and what the relative advantages and disadvantages are of each configuration?
Thanks, Alec.
