Lots to choose from...

All these things depend on how much money you have to spend... I was utilise the PCI slots if I were you although you may want to look into the new MOTU audio interface that runs on the Firewire sockets. Worth a look!!

I would steer clear of USB as an option as the Firewire sockets and PCI offers more options. The best way to check out what is available for the Mac is to travel to the local Hi-Tech music shop and see what is new and on offer. Audio cards are a lot cheaper than they were a year or so ago so you could end up with something decent for not a lot of money. Check the software you get with it as well as they usually offer a reasonable music sequencer like Logic AV or Cubasis. Logic AV is definately optimised for the G4's velocity engine so it will impress. It will allow Audio and Midi sequencing with a lot of editability.

If the card that suits you doesn't have Midi in/out then you should consider a USB interface from someone like MOTU or MidiMan. I use the Midiman 2x2 on my G4/400 and it's seems to be very reliable.

Enjoy!

How to convert .wav to .Sf2, and use them in Cakewalk

I wanna make soundfonts out of wave files and use them as samples,
but I'm having difficulty using Vienna Soundfont Studio
to do this. So far I've been able to audiograb a song,
chop it in Soundforge, then load that into Vienna SF
studio. From there I'm confused on where to load the
sample and how to access the sample in Cakewalk.
Someone tell me what I need to do or am doing wrong.

Re: How to convert .wav to .Sf2, and use them in Cakewalk

A conversion program called "Awave studio" does the conversion automatically.
Find the link to a free demo version in the music software pages.

files from pc to cassette

hi i would like to know how to record speech files from pc to audio cassette,is this possible?

Re: files from pc to cassette

if you simply get a cable that has a stereo plug on one end, and then two RCA plugs on the other end, and plug it into a stereo that has a cassette player and line/aux in sockets on it. easy.

Virtual Audio Cable Driver 1.11
===============================

Author: Eugene Muzychenko, Novosibirsk, Russia
2:5000/14@FidoNet, music@spider.nrcde.ru

Distributed by: NTONYX Ltd.

Introduction
------------

The Virtual Audio Cable embodies an idea of physical interconnection
cable applied to Windows digital sound devices (Wave In and Wave Out).
Driver creates a pairs of Wave In/Out multi-client device ports; "In"
and "Out" ports in each pair are internally connected so all digital
audio data sent (played) to "Out" part of the cable by one program is
directly transferred to the "In" part and can be retrieved (recorded)
by another program. This mechanism allows to interconnect several
programs that are using Wave devices - software synthesizers, sound
processors, sound editors, sequencers etc. Additionally, it allows to
record pure digital audio data produced by programs that don't create
WAV files, sending audio only to Wave device in real time.

Each port of driver is multi-client, allowing multiple applications to
open the port at same time. All sounds sends to Out port are mixed,
all clients connected to In port get the individual copy of sound.

Small utility, Audio Repeater, is included into the package to monitor
sounds transferred by the cable.

System requirements
-------------------

VAC is designed to work under Windows 3.1 Enhanced Mode (386 or higher
CPUs), Windows 95 or 98, but tested only under Windows 95. Any amount
of RAM enough for Windows will be enough for VAC too.

Features
--------

Up to 64 cables in full version, one cable in demo.

1..1000 interrupts per second in full version, 20 in demo.

Almost any sound format (sample rate, size and channels).

Unlimited number of clients connected to each port.

Sound mixing between clients at output port.

Audio Repeater application that transfers from any Wave In to any Wave
Out device.

Compatibility
-------------

Driver is compatible with any application that uses Windows multimedia
waveform devices (Wave In/Wave Out) such as Windows Media Player,
Sound Recorder, Cool Edit (Syntrillium), Sound Forge (Sonic Foundry),
Cubase/WaveLab (Steinberg), Cakewalk (Cakewalk Software), Generator
(Native Instruments), WinAMP (NullSoft) and others.

Some modern Win32 applications use DirectSound interface to
communicate with audio equipment. Current version of VAC doesn't
support DirectSound but Windows 95 DirectX subsystem has an emulator
that makes any standard waveform device DirectSound-compatible.
However, some application (GigaSampler, for example) require "true"
DirectSound devices - they will not work with current VAC version.

Installation
------------

If driver files are packed, first unpack the archive to any empty
directory on your hard disk.

In Windows 95, go to the Control Panel, double click "Add New
Hardware" icon, answer "No" to auto search prompt, then select "Sound,
video and game controllers". In device list dialog select "Have disk"
and enter a path to the driver directory. Select "Virtual Audio Cable
Device Driver" and follow instructions displayed.

In Windows 3.1, go to the Control Panel, double click "Drivers" icon,
select "Add", then "Unlisted or updated driver", enter a path to the
driver directory and select "Virtual Audio Cable Device Driver".

Windows restart is required to activate installed driver.

Audio Repeater (audiorpt.exe) can be placed in any directory with
creating shortcut to it.

After system restart, there appears a new Wave Device "Virtual Audio
Cable", having two Digital Audio ports: "Audio Cable 1 In" for input
port and "Audio Cable 1 Out" for output port.

Full version creates (and further recognizes) a parameter section
named "[Virtual Audio Cable]" of Windows SYSTEM.INI file. There are
two keys in this section:

NumberOfCables - actual number of cables supported by driver;

IntsPerSec - number of interrupts per second during transfer.

You can edit this file using SysEdit or any other text editor like
NotePad, and manually change these value in ranges described in
Features section of this manual.

Increasing number of interrupts per second, you can reach less
interval between sending sound to Out port and retrieving them from In
port. But the larger value is specified in IntsPerSec, the more
overhead will be created in system. Typical audio cards uses 15..20
interrupts per second.

Don't forget that Windows restart is required to take effect of the
changes.

Working with cables
-------------------

Both cable sides are standard Windows MME wave devices, you can use
"In" and "Out" ports of each cable in any program that works with
audio devices. All cables are completely independent. Both sides of
one cable must be open with same format: if other side isn't open,
each device accepts any wave format; when other side is open with
given format, device accepts only same format.

Each port is multi-client, allowing unlimited number of programs that
may use the port at same time.

Virtual cable behaves as a real cable:

- when only output side is open, all played data is ignored;

- when only input side is open, silence is recorded;

- when both sides are open, all data sent to output side appears
unchanged at input side;

- if multiple programs are connected to Out port, all sound streams
are mixed together;

- if multiple programs are connected to In port, they get individual
copies of main sound stream.

Mixing of output streams is relatively dumb: all sample values are
simply added together, and there are no overflow check. If there are
many clients and/or they produce high volume levels, the resulting
sound stream may contain "wrapped" samples produced by overflow. These
samples sounds like clicks and distortions.

Mixing works only with samples up to 32 bit. Higher sample size allows
only one client per output port.

The driver ports accept any sound format with one restriction: number
of bytes per interrupt (sample rate * bytes per sample * channels /
interrupts per second) cannot exceed 65536.

All internal data transfers from output to input side are completely
digital, and no quality degradation occurs. If you play WAV file to
output side and simultaneously record data from input side, all
recorded data will be same as played, except of possible leading
and/or trailing silence.

Monitoring cable transfers
--------------------------

Audio Repeater is created primarily to monitor cable transfers. If VAC
transfers sound from its Out to its In internally, Audio Repeater
transfers from any Wave In device to any other Wave Out device. Thus,
selecting Audio Cable N In and any sound card Out in Audio Repeater
causes all sound appeared at In port of virtual cable to be sent to
sound card DAC making it audible. Maybe, you can find other useful
applications for the Audio Repeater :)

Removing the driver from your system
------------------------------------

To remove driver from system you can select "Remove" in Control Panel
or simply delete "wave*=vac.drv" line from [drivers] section of
SYSTEM.INI. Additionally, you can delete the "[Virtual Audio Driver]
section. After Windows restart you will be able to delete driver file
VAC.DRV from Windows SYSTEM directory. Audio Repeater EXE file can be
deleted at any time.

Obtaining new versions of the driver
------------------------------------

Distribution rights are granted to NTONYX Ltd. Versions of VAC and
other information can be obtained at http://www.ntonyx.com. Current
demo version can be found at ftp://spider.nrcde.ru/pub/sound/other/ in
file named VACDMxxx.ZIP.

Distribution policy
-------------------

Full version of the driver is commercial. Demo version is free of
charge, full version is granted to registered users after payment.
Demo can be distributed freely if its package and file contents
remains unchanged, and there are no commercial purposes. You cannot
sell it, independently or in one set with other products. Full version
is restricted to use on only one computer at a time, and cannot be
copied, modified or reselled.

Midi player Inquiry

Hello,

I'm hoping you can help. I'm looking for a Midi that plays even better than Wingroove. Wingroove has Midi support for over 128 instruments, not just the lame synth of most media players. Basically I want a program that's reliable, powerful, and with exceptional sound for C Media sound card. I love playing midis more than any other music file after seeing what Wingroove can do with midi, but want something that will utilize very little resource ( I have a 550 AMD ), relatively small, support 128+ instruments, and keeps the midi playback at high priority, unlike media player for Windows.
I would be happy to shell out the $$$ for a really good player, so any advice is welcome. Thanks!

Burnt CD does not play in Car CD Player....

I am having problem playing my burnt CDs in the car stereo of my Acura.
I have burnt the CD on very low speed. Is there specify CD-Rs do we need to buy?

Re: Burnt CD does not play in Car CD Player....

First make sure that you have closed the cd... if not it won't play except on your writer. Then try it on another stander cd player. If it works there, you just have a picky player in your car. If it's closed and doesn't play on any other players, your writer may be out of alignment or you are burning in the wrong format.. soory can't be of more help, but good luck!

Cubasis AV and windows 2000

I just got cubasis AV with a Roland PC-300 keyboard.

I'm running windows 2000.

When I go to install the software, it gives me the message, "This software requires windows 95/98".

Is there a hack that could let me run this software or an upgrade to a window 2000 compatible version that is reasonably cheap.

Thanks a lot in advance.

PS: Software companies that want users not to rip them off should provide reasonable support. Neither Roland nor Steinberg seem to provide anything themselves.
(At least not much on the web).

mac or pc for recording

i have heard many horror/great stories from both camps as to which os to use - mac or pc. is there anyone out there who can give me a NON-BIASED opinion. i want to hear views from people who have used both and know the pros and cons of each - not mac people raving about macs and pc people raving about pc's. i am familiar with both os's and will probably be using protools 001 and perhaps logic audio - perhaps midi at some point in the future most recording will be "live".

Re: mac or pc for recording

I have used both operating systems---for many years. My preference is with Mac. Windows systems have always been prone to crashes and freeze-ups--not something you really want when recording. Each version of Windows (95, 98, 2000) have made some improvements, but, quite frankly, not good enough. Music software, as with graphics software, requires fast, stable, continuous number crunching. The architecture of the Windows operating system has never really accelled in achieving and sustaining the needed stability. And, until fairly recently, most recording facilities and graphics houses use Macs for this very reason. Like I said, there have been improvements in the Windows-based systems, but not enough for me to trust such a system to my work (I am a professional composer). I still own 2 Macs and one Intel, but, if you really want a stable, no-hassle system go with a Mac--you'll never regret it!

Re: mac or pc for recording

Its always a great debate but I tried setting up the Digi 001 on a PC and had lots of trouble. Then I tried a G4 and it worked great. Some people have had no troubles with PCs but If your wanting a computer just for recording go for a MAC. There are also more plug-ins for Pro Tools LE for Mac than PC.

Take a look at Digidesign's User Conference

Track Splitter

HELP!! Does anyone know if there is a program out that lets you split up say a waveform into seperate tracks??? Say a 10 minute song.. Instead of being one long song, to be able to place a marker or whatnot at the 5 minute mark so it will burn as track 1 and track 2 instead of just one long track?????

Re: Track Splitter

CD Wave Editor is a program designed to aid in CD-Recordable mastering. It was built for splitting WAV files from any source, like LP, tape or even CD. After recording, you can let CD Wave automatically calculate split points, or you can manually add and delete split points. After this, you can write out the tracks as individual wave files and use any CDR mastering program to write a disc that has no clicks or pops in between tracks.

mic line in to Powerbooks? 2) unwanted noise through power sourc

I want run a microphone line into my Powerbook G3. Is there some USB connection or is it impossible? Also, how can I get rid of noise (radio)coming through my power source to my Mac?

thanks for any help.

This may help...

Hi,
Youll need analog to digital converters to get the mic going with good quality. Now, I do beleive powerbooks have a pcmia slot so Id say the best bet is to get an RME Hammerfall pcmia soundcard.

If you must use usb theres tascams 428 usb but Id say the RME hammerfall pcmia card is a MUUUUCHHCHC better choice. USB isnt good for audio.

Also, a choice worth serious consideration is the upcoming motu 828 firewire audio interface. But RME makes some of the best stuff out there and if you go that route things should work superbly.

Best format for bird song recordings

ASF Indexing

I'm trying to make asf files index... meaning people can fast forward, or rewind through the file. I'm using version 7 of the media tools from Microsoft. I'm creating 1-2 hour long dj mix sets, and it would be nice for people to zip through or rewind. I'm creating asx files for each asf... is there a switch or anything in there for indexing?

Dart Karaoke Studio Help!

I have yet to find how to "envoke the CD+G menu" or produce a CD+G .bin file .. the help files are very poor and dartech support is worse.. Could just be me? Anyone out there able to make this prog work? Help!

Re: Dart Karaoke Studio Help!

first your cd writer has to be compatible with the software. then you start up dard cd recorder, click read tracks, select the songs you want to convert, where you want to store them on your hard drive, and click the cd&G selection on the bottom. This coverts the file to a .bin file. After you have uploaded and converted all the files to .bin files if you want to burn them to a CD click on create CD, this converts the file back to a .cda file and burns it to your CD. Hope this helps.
