equalizer settings
I was just wondering what some good sound settings were.
Re: equalizer settings
That depends on what you want to do. There are no real hard and fast rules that you MUST follow when EQ'ing. Some people are better at it than others. Some tips though...
1. Concentrate on the Middle frequencies as they will affect the overall sound the most and remember, although we can apparently hear from 20hz to 20,000hz, it doesn't mean that middle frequencies are around 10,000. 1000hz (1k) is considered as 'relatively high' as a frequency.
2. Increasing say 1khz of an instrument and subtracting 1khz from another will give a sense of seperation of the 2 instruments. Many studio enginners will spend a lot of time trying to control the perception of instruments from each other using EQ, it's a fine art.
3.Dont overdo EQ'ing of an overall mix. The changes will be subtle if you want to achieve that Pro sound.
4. Attempt to get your head around High pass Filters and Low pass filters (HPF/LPF) as they are very handy for limiting noise and isolation of instruments. The Highpass filter will allow frequencies 'above' the selected frequency to pass untouched but everything below it will be reduced in volume by the default amount (About 20db usually). If you have a high hat sound, allowing that track the use of 20hz is an invitation for noise. A high pass filter set at 200hz or more will remove the information (noise) below that level although the fact that the hats have no useful information there will leave them unscathed.
5. Don't forget to try anything although, extremes will more than likely cause dynamic problems and possible damage to your speakers etc... Listen to your mix loud and on different equipment when eq'ing to find out if your ideas work on different systems. Don't forget to use the 'Q' setting on the EQ'ing device. This will set the frequency bandwidth (the amount of frequencies affected 'either side' of the selected frequency. The higher the 'Q' the wider the bandwidth.
6. Don't get tooo bogged down in the science. Make an effort to understand the tool and experiment.

I would agree to most things that Steve has said, but being a professional recording engineer for the last 7 years has taught me one thing. Don"t play it LOUD!!!! EQ at low volume!!!
Good luck. Toby

Is the SoundBlaster 16 compatible w/ Soundfonts?
Re: cont'd from 1st message

Nope you're right. The SB16 doesn't use
SoundFonts. The AWE series do (AWE32/64) and
I think the SBLive series too. Check for
onboard RAM on the SB card. If it has RAM (not
ROM) then it should be able to use Soundfonts.

serial number for soundforge 4.5.57
It's quiet simple but it's serious. If I could have this
number from sonicfoundry I don't use this way to find it.
CD-RW - problems with wavelab etc
Hi - I copped a fairly new, but crappy quality IDE CD-RW machine recently.
It works fine with Adaptec EZ-CD4, but whenever I try to use it in wavelab3
or CD architect (4.0g i think), then both proggies report that no CD writer
was detected on the system. Does anyone know if these apps only recognise
SCSI CD-R's, or could someone suggest a way around this problem ?
Cheers Y'all

Cd Titling
What cd recording package enables the Album title or song title to be displayed on capable home CD players?
Thanks Colby Hossler
Re: Cd Titling
You need software capable of working in the CD-TEXT protocol. I have never done it and would be interested to find out as well.

Hey Geoff or anybody, what is a soundfont?
i JUST D/LED SOME SOUNDFONTS, A PACKAGE TO EXRACT THEM FROM THE SF2 FORMAT AN NOW i DONT KNOW HOW TO USE THEM. What kind of program do use soundfonts with? Do most music progs let you use them? How? Im not a novice because I write music with waves but now Ive discovered Soundfonts take up a lot less space so I want to use them. What program do I use to open them with in Windows 95? See, I stayed clear of soundfonts because I thought they only applied to MIDI musicians but i think i was mistaken
problem with napster ban fix

How can i convert wav to mp3?
Can some one tell me the name of a program that i can use. It would be a big help thanx.
Re: How can i convert wav to mp3?
There are many programs out there that can do this. I figure you want something that does the job and nothing else?
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Easy_MP3/">Easy MP3</a>
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/MediaBox/">Media Box 4.3</a>
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/MP3_HS/">MP3 Home Studio 1.6</a>
Just try the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/MP3/">MP3 section</a> if you want something other than these.

microphone wont talk for dial pad
how do i get microphone to work ive tried all kinds of help
Re: microphone wont talk for dial pad
: how do i get microphone to work ive tried all kinds of help
This might work
This might work
The microphone might not be configured properly...
that could be the problem...
With Windows 95
Right click the "My Computer" Icon on the desktop...
Click Properties,
Click Device Manager
In there, see if you 've got it all hooked up right
if you still can't find it!
Go to START
Go to SETTINGS
Go to CONTROL PANEL
Go to MULTIMEDIA
On the bottom half of the screen, is the microphone configuration..
Don't worry,
My dialpad won't work either, I guess that's why we have telephones right???
That's why they don't have computers instead of telephone booths...computers aren't that reliable when it comes to stuff like that, (Dialing, Clock, etc.)
Good, but not good enough
Yeah, check the "Control Panel" under Multimedia...
the microphone might just be switched off, that could be the problem.,.. or ,... it might not be plugged in...check that, check it's not the microphone that's giving problems...
if you still can't get it working,
Email me, and I'll give you the link to a forum where they CAN help you. Not as good as this, or maybe it is? Well, if you can't find help here, and email me, i'll give you the link...
See you ,

Re: information to help promotion please any of you .
I guess it depends by what you mean by promotion. First of all, you have to work out what you want to achieve and set some goals to measure your performance by.
Most successful bands who promote online have email lists, regularly update their websites, regularly release new MP3s, offer discounts to subscribers of their newsletters, develop mutual links between similar sites and have snappy, interesting content. Successful promotion isn't about putting your name in front of as many people as possible, it's about getting them to develop a relationship with the band.
Cheers

changing volume levels
Could you please let me know how I could possibly gat all of my MP3s to be of a similar volume level. I find that when I try to load an MP3 that I recorded myself from Dat, it is always much more quiet than the ones I get from Napster and many of them are of widely varying volume levels so that when I burn a CD, it must be turned up or down after almost every song! Please Help! Thankyou
two questions
i know you're probably sick of being asked about wav to MP3 file converting, but i have to ask you guys - in your opinion, what is the BEST converter?
also, do you know of a freeware or shareware or demo program which lets me create my own winamp skins AND save them? i have one program which lets me create new skins, but not save them. so it's completely useless.
thanks guys.

question from a novice
I'm new at this and am overwhelmed by all of the amazing stuff on this site. Is there a software program that scores the notes you're playing on a keyboard in real time? If so, are there multiple such programs and which ones would you recommend? thanks for the help.

Making a soundtrack
Hello, Is there a free computer program that I can use to separate the lyrics from a CD track and create a soundtrack.i.e.-Play the track with just the music not the words.can someone help me?
Re: Making a soundtrack
Removing vocals is not the easiest thing in the world to do.
You can try <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/VocalRemover/">AnalogX Vocal Remover</a> also the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/KARAOKE/"> Karaoke Category </a>

PC music editor
I'm new to this, so I need something fairly simple. I'm looking for a program that I can edit two songs together by either a quick start/stop or by crossfading. It would be nice if it had some special effects options included as well.
Thanks.
