Although i'm not sure...

Although i'm not to sure how to physically do it, I will point out that some of the music you hear are in fact Midi files. You can put .WAV's on as well although I have waited for ages for the pages to load up when the author has put tooo longer' file on there. I should think that a lot of them are low quality .WAV's as well so be careful not to load in too bigger dong.

Just some thoughts!

Download FREE Music software at : http://www.simtel.net/simtel.n

Hi all,

Be clever, use the Web search tools, and you can find all what you need.

Simtel site is an excellent site for Shareware Music software, but you can too, go to ZDNET , CNET, TUCOWS, etc...

Type "shareware" in YAHOO! or ALTAVISTA, and you'll have all the good sites.

Jaco 1.0

Does anyone have a copy of Jaco 1.0? downloading it from here doesn't work. I would like a copy of it, so if anyone has it, let me know where you got it, or i could trade for the full version of cool edit pro. thanks.

Hooking up!

I have an MMT8 Alesis sequencer and a cheap Yamamha midi capable keyboard. I have been out of the playing loop for many years. What I am looking for is a way or a software program to use via computer that I can use as a sound module in conjuction with my midi keyboard and sequenced through the alsesis. I want to record from the yamaha to the alesis sequencer and use the computer software as a sound source to record on as many as 8 channels, polyphonically, with different tibres. This must be possible...help me!

Re: Hooking up!

I used to have an MMT8 many years ago. I left it in Canada with an ex-girlfriend when I moved back to England. Anyway, rather than waffling on about this software synth and that, try them for yourself and see what you come up with.

tapedeck to computer

would anybody know why soundforge wont record from my tapedeck? i go from line out of tapedeck, to line in on my pc. ive tweeked the record meters whilst recording but on playback nothing has recorded. help, what am i doing wrong?

Re: tapedeck to computer

This may be silly but, have you made sure that line-in is selected in the record options in the volume control panel??
When in the volume control panel: Go to OPTIONS - PROPERTIES and then click on recording and make sure the line in box is selected.
I may be telling you something you already have checked, but you never know..
Best o' luck.

Are there additional audio effects I can use in Cakewalk besides

Actually, the subject of the message says it all. I'd like more interesting tools without having to take audio tracks over to another program to manipulate them there. Possible?

: : All Cakewalk Pro Audio from version 6 upwards can use DirectX plugins, of which there are hundreds. In addition, CoolEdit Pro automatically links with Cakewalk when installed, without having to change or quit programs.MIDI fx are also included in Cakewalk. Amulet adapter allows you to use VST effects in DX applications.

k, well i got ACID.20 an I like it, BUT i found that you cant really use it as a sample sequencing solution if your wanting really good sounding results, because I dont think it was made to have many things going on at once. THAT SUCKS! i make music thats really busy and (I cant even add effects because my computer sux and goes retarted) but after like 6 tracks its hard to layer parts without the damn program clippin'somehow. Example, say I hat a fat sub and I wanted to also include a phat beat. Well the bass in both tracks woould cancel each other out and the resulting sound would "fart". Is there any way to solve this? I know gotta get a faster computer, but that wont be for a while.Any tips or suggestions on sequencing software? **nOt fRuItY lOops** already got it(too slow)

If your problem is clipping, remember that the volume produced by layering wav files is cumulative. That is, if you mix two or more wav files or tracks that are pushing the top of the meters, you're going to get a signal that's way over clipping limit. Decrease the over-all volume of each track.

Computer speed HD speed.

It sounds like you 'puter isn't as fast as it could be. Most people think processor only but you have to consider the speed of the HD and it's bus speed. Memory is also a consideration when using effects in realtime.

I always suggest that people use earlier version of programs on earlier machines as they were more than likely made for the capabilities of the machine you have rather than newer programs for newer computers. I'm a Macintosh user and therefore can't help with any software suggestions, sorry...

Recording Midi CDs

I'd like to record from my Yamaha midi keyboards to my HP CDRW on my PC. Do I need a software program like Cool Edit to do this, or can it been done directly without any extra software? Thanks for your help! Neil

Re: Recording Midi CDs

: I'd like to record from my Yamaha midi keyboards to my HP CDRW on my PC. Do I need a software program like Cool Edit to do this, or can it been done directly without any extra software? Thanks for your help! Neil

: : Bear in mind that you will have to record via the audio output of your keyboard, NOT the midi connector. You may want to think about recording live to a midi file on your PC, as you can then edit the music prior to recording to cd, and you will not need so much processor power.

Back into the computer.

I suspect that you have a computer based CDRW which means you will have to record the output from the keyboard, into the computer using a simple 'computer audio input to Wave' application that can then be burnt as audio to the CD. This site has many programs to do this in the file section. Go take a look at 'Audio Recorders'

legal?

Please tell me if it is legal to burn c.d.'s for myself (and friends if I do not accept payment). I have a large collection and was thinking of making copies for the public library, but was told that they can only accept the originals. Is this true? & Why? Thank you.

Re: legal?

Yes it is illegal because of copyright laws. BUT...here in Canada, we were slapped with a huge government tax on "Recordable Blank Media" (CDR, CDRW, magnetic tape). This excise tax is passed to the recording industry to pay for pirated copies. Thus, every CD that is used strictly for PC data files, or the many CDR's that fail being written and are then useless, pays the recording industry N-Tuple times even when the CDR does not contain music. I think this more than enough makes up for the piracy. PLUS , by paying government taxes, this makes the Canadian Government (maybe also USA ?) either an "equal partner in the crime" - the government has sanctioned CD copying and made it legal, by taking a cut of the CD tax revenue we are forced to pay.
Certainly, the PC software industry does not want to be included in this taxation or royalty collection scam by the government, because by accepting such a fee they would have to admit that Software CD copying would then be legal - but their program CD's (software) sells for upto $800 in some cases - so the pitance of the royalty tax would not cover their loss (unlike that on a $20 music CD, a small portion of which actually gets to the artist). They are too smart to get caught in this scam.
Its all a matter of "legal interpretation"

Re: legal?

: : You can only copy CD's that you already own, for your personal use. It is irrelevant whether your friends pay or not. I you own a CD, you transfer this entitlement to the puchaser,i.e;
you cannot legally keep a copy of a CD or album that you have sold. A public library cannot accept
music such as you suggest, being a public institution.
From the legalistic to the realistic however, the recording industry is more concerned with the wholesale commercial piracy than people knocking up a copy or two for their mates. There is more chance of O.J. telling the world he is guilty than you getting nicked for such an offence.
As to your question why; well it's basic copyright law. Anyone is entitled to be paid for the fruits of their labour, and home copying obviously means that the original artists are losing out with every copy of their work which is copied (i.e. pirated) rather than bought. I hope yhis makes thing clearer.

Right...

You can burn copies of your own CD's but I think you are only allowed to burn one for your own use. Playing this in public or lending to friends to copy is illegal.

The question that demands consideration is, do you really care what the music industry think. While they're sitting there in their penthouse flats, draining musical life out of life itself and bludgeoning choice in favour of filthy lucre, I wouldn't feel guilty about robbing their houses let alone copying a CD that I had legitimately bought at a disgusting price. The people in the industry as a whole can generally be considered filth, if your don't agree, then you are not looking deep enough into the situation. I say, copy away until they become extinct or reasonable, neither unfortunately, of which will happen.

need the Midi interface cable

I can sequence on many keyboards like KORG O1 WFD,TRINITY,ROLAND XP50 & JW50. But my only problem is that I can't find a midi interface cable for my PC(HP,PentiumI-233)and I need some sequencing tips for sequencing on Cakewalk etc.I have normal midi cables but I don't know which port I have to connect and I've told you before I don't have midi interface cable. Now I have Roland-JW50 and I am also a bit bored with 16 tracks. Please send me information about my problems

: : You will need a MIDI interface cable to connect your keyboard(s) to a PC. Connect your standard MIDI cable from keyboard to the interface box, and the interface box connects to the MIDI port on your PC. (The PC MIDI port is on the soundcard, and is generally referred to as the Joystick port, as it doubles as this as well)
In Control Panel > Multimedia settings on your PC you can make sure that everything is setup for an external MIDI source and then you're ready to rock! This should give you up to 256 tracks, with the ability to use all of your keyboards at once.

soundblaster

my card plays sound but I can barely hear it!!!!! This shit is pissing me off.... HHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPPP

Re: soundblaster

i have a soundblaster live which is great but it does boot up with the master volume and line/midi/wave outputs at around 75% on the mixer. pushing all up to full makes all the difference. also making sure the bass and treble settings on the properties section are set halfway, i.e. flat, helps.
good luck.

Re: soundblaster

: my card plays sound but I can barely hear it!!!!! This shit is pissing me off.... HHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPPP

: : check your system volume control settings (C:\WINDOWS\SNDVOL32.EXE)and make sure that the wave, midi, synth and master volume controls are unmuted by removing the tickmarks from the boxes beneath the sliders. If this doesn't work, throw away your Soundblaster and get a proper soundcard!

Re: soundblaster

i hate my sb16. it really sux but i cant upgrade my machine. If your cpu is upgradable then GET A NEW CARD.

Re: soundblaster

A) What is a "Proper" soundcard?

B) SB 16 isn't exactly teh best out there.... try an SB Live or even an AWE 32 or 64.

C) As for the real problem, adjust the volume, using the little speaker icon in the system tray (far right bottom of the screen)

Spinfrenzy

i downloaded this program and installed it. When i search for music i get the downloads to show, i try to download a song and i get a message to download the execute file again, I have done this and when I go to download again it will ask for me to download sfsetup.exe. I should only have to download it once and yet everytime I go to download a file it will ask that I reinstall the sfsetup.exe again and not allow me to download any files at all.

Problems recording vinyl

Hi guys,
Am using Adaptec SpinDoctor (part of Easy CD Creator Deluxe), the recordings are horrible, actually noisier than original, sounds like clipping kinda - am using Aztech "Thunderbird" sound card, which has all the goodies, except Tone Controls - had to un-install Windows Media Player 7 owing to similar problem using their tonal boosts - CD's come out perfectly - do the filters use the same drivers/gizmos to do their stuff as say a graphic EQ, bass boost, or whatever? ie: The EQ with Winamp doesn't do anything on my system, are all these things related to my sound cards inability to do that stuff?
I purchased that particular soundcard as it had virtually everything except the extensive 4 channel capabilities of the more expensive cards - I use my stereo system.
I have a sneaking suspicion that I should have opted for the tried and true Sound Blaster, do I need the "Live" version, or will the standard version do the job properly?
Glad I hit on your web site, need something like this.

Re: Problems recording vinyl

While the SB Live! Is a really good card, it's not strictly dependant on your soundcard, with teh right software, you should be able to do anything, it's a matter of being able to hear what you are doing...

As for Winamp, are you sure you turned the EQ on? in the E.Q window, there is a button, and it should have a lit up green light on.

As for recording, I use Cooledit, and Soundforge (Free version included with the SB Live)
also, you have to adjust the input levels when recording, that is what really makes or breaks teh recording, no amount of E.Q or dynamics can fix bad recording. don't be afraid to have the recording paused, and listen to the input before recording.. Make sure the levels aren't too high as it introduces clipping. if it's too low, you'll have to amplify it, which will put in more noise than you would get if you had it high enough to start with.

Hi Doug,
I also tried Spin Doctor from Easy CD Creator but gave up on it. The process of transferring vinyl to CD is very much a multi stage and somewhat labour intensive process. I have found that the best software for each stage doesn't come from just one company. For capture of the sound onto hard disc I like "AUDIOTOOLS". Audiotools also has a very good parametric equaliser and it also gives me separate Left & Right record level controls. "GROOVMECHANIC" is my choice for noise, click and scratch reduction But I also find it useful to have another program called "DEPOPPER". "COOLEDIT" is a much better wave editor than the one included with Easy CD Creator, and this is what I use to split the individual tracks.I find the automatic track splitters are not always reliable but that depends on the type of music you are transferring. Finally to burn CDs I use the free version of Easy CD Creator (v3.5) which came with my burner. I am using a Soundblaster Vibra 128 soundcard; it's their entry level card and very basic but does the job; your card sound like it would be better than this. All of the above programs are shareware and I think most are available for download from this site.
Good luck,

Jeff Raphael

i am new to the workings on computers, creating directories etc, i am wondering if anyone can give an idiots guide to installing and setting it up on my computer.I have windows 98 and an sw1oooxg card, also cubase vst

Playing with myself!

I'd be most grateful if someone could tell me if there's
a relatively inexpensive way of using my p.c. as
a digital recorder, such that I can plug in my
acoustic guitar, record a track then play along with
the recording while simultaneously recording both
the original and additional tracks etc etc.
I have a reasonably grunty p.c running Windows and
an acoustic guitar + pick-up & chorus pedal, but that's
it. Do I simply plug the guitar into the sound card
in my p.c. and buy some software (what product?) or
isn't it that simple?

It's sort of that simple

It's sort of that simple. The first thing is the computers input card is not suitable for every type of audio input therefore, you should check with the cards literature to find out what sort of inputs it supports. On the whole, the input will attempt a microphone or a line although professionally, they are both different. For a guitar, you should have a dedicated guitar input like a guitar amplifier that also has a line output that could then be plugged into the computers minijack input, fools plug their guitars straight into the computer!. Alternatively, you could buy a DI (direct injection box) which will level and improve the guitar sound, making it suitable for line level input although the next stage of buying the DI box and then a mixing desk that can handle Mic and Line inputs is favourite, although demands a financial outlay.

After that, you will need a Multitrack recording application from which there are many. The obvious ones are Logic Audio or Cubase which offer full audio and Midi multitracking with comprehensive editing and effects processing. You mention that your PC s a little bit grunty which is relative to the performance you will get from these processor hungry programs. The HD speed is relative to how many tracks you will get playing back at one time.

If you computer is really really old then it might be worth you buying an old version of one of the affore mentioned programs and checking the specs to make sure your not wasting your money. Some of the programs come free on the front of magazines and some cost in excess of £500, the choice is yours!

Re: How can I create A Capellas???

Unfortunately, no such program exists. However, many artists make available a capella versions of their songs on cd singles. But, if you are hellbent on trying to isolate vox, the best you can do it apply some EQ in a wave editing program such as soundforge. Beanhead Out.

help !

Having managed to get together a Yamaha PSR 520, Novation BassStation Analog Synth, Yamaha QY 20 Sequencer, a 12 tracks analog mixer and finally a PC Pentium lll 550 with Cakewalk Pro Audio 8, I wonder if I can connect all of them together by means of MIDI ?
As of now, I have connected the PSR 520 to the PC
with a MIDI Cable [ the 'Y' kind ]and can only do limited stuff and that too painstakingly slowly.
Can I get more out of this equipment ?
