Digidesign 001 vs. Seasound
Trying to get started on my g4 system and deciding between a digidesign digi 001 and the seasound for an all around base system. Pros? Cons?

Just to say...
Just to say thanks for enlightening me to the Seasound solo. I haven't actually heard about that one until now and will have more of a read about it. It certainly looks nice on the face of it. I have used the Digi001 at an Apple stand whilst working in Portugal some months ago and was very impressed. Also, the fact that you get Pro-tools lite with all the pluggins (not the TDM unfortunately) is a great bonus. The quality of the mix that I played with was astounding for the money. My local music shop has a G4 (which I have too) hooked upto a Digi001 and they swear by it. Do me a favour, let us know what you decide on and how it is in operation as I would like to think that i'm in the market for one too!
Cheers

Did you check out the seasound website?
G4 with Mac OS 8.6 or Mac OS 9.0
Problems
Intermittent crashes or freezes on startup
Digital audio applications freeze when configuring sound options
both these problems are not fully resolved.
I have read good things about the digi001 being used on macs. Also with the Digi001 you can get experience in protools, a plus if you decide to record music professionally. My vote goes for the Digi001. Beanhead out.
vocal masking software
This popular thread has been given its own page : vocal masking software
Music Works Personal v2,3 series
Bought me this version and was promised updates which never materialised.
Could'nt even raise their site on the internet until I came across it on hitsquad.
Any advice please ?
piano sampling?
ANYONE KMOW...the best(low to mid priced!)way to introduce a great sounding grand piano (sampled?) or module to my midi studio.I'm using Cubase VST 4.1,Mac 7200/120, 64 ram, 512 level2 cache,8.6 os,Korg X5DR sound module.Any help or suggests appreciated.
Software or Hardware.
If I were you I would buy a dedicated piano module by testing one out at the local music store. Opinions are varied in this area and your ears should be the decider. Your Mac isn't that fast and I think you may run into problems if you are trying to run a sequencer at the same time, however, the best software option available to you in my opinion is "Blacks & Whites" by Bitheadz, (www.bitheadz.com). I think it's a little bit more expensive than it need be but is worth a look. Herbie Hancock swears by it apparently and I should think he'd be the man to know... I think it may require a 200Mhz processor though. I used to run Logic Audio 3.5 happily on my older macintosh that required a 604 processor but ran perfectly well on my 603e so who knows...

Re: piano sampling?
The proprietary Alesis piano patch called "True Stereo"
is downright SCARY in it's quality. It's available in
the QS series synths, and is also in the Nano Piano module,
which is very inexpensive.
Gigasampler ! - which sequenzer ?
I have Cubase VST, but I can't seem to make it work.
Is there a better choice ?
If not - how do I make it work ?
I can load sounds into Gigasampler - and choose giga as source in Cubase, but there i s no sound.
I use a SB Live card !
Thanx
Is this possible..?
What I want to do is actually record the output of a program in real time, without recording onto DAT or anything first. The reason: want to record realtime output of Simsynth to a .wav file for import into VST. Not too hot on MIDI, but can you route the output of the sound card back into the computer and record what is being output, whilst it is being played?

You can save .wav files from Simsynth but not in
real-time. To record the output in real-time you
need a virtual sound card driver like Total Recorder.
Can you tell us why you need real-time, just curious.
Why real time...?
Well thanks for the input guys, will certainly investigate total recorder. Yes I have Simsynth registered, and the sounds you can squeeze out of it are pretty amazing. However, the output only records a fixed length of bars, and doesn't let you fiddle with anything whilst your doing it. Hence you can only get loops with at most the LFO changing - I want to record the effects of twisting cut offs etc a la ReBirth. If I could synchronise it with Cubase it would be preferable obviously.

why realtime? Simsynth (when registered) can output to .wav files, which can be flown in to any sequencer. Beanhead out.

Cubase 3.7
Can anyone shed any light - I am running DirectX 7 drivers with cubase 3.7 with Soundblaster Live card and 198MB RAM and i am still suffering incredible latency with instruments and plugins. I have absolutely no other software running in the background and am getting rather frustrated. This even happens when i disable all dx plugins and only use instruments - MODEL-E slows down loads when the release is switched on. Thanks people!
Try disable 3DFX performance options
Hi,
Try to disable your 3D acceleration ( i suppose your video card is Accelerated ) options...Some 3d video cards drivers are designed to get most of the CPU power but this process may generally reduce Sound Card processes and performances...
Good luck.

unprotecting .wma files
I used Voquette to download a streaming audio file to .wma. I wanted to convert the .wma to a wav using Audio Converter 2.0 but it said the .wma file was protected and couldn't be converted. How do I unprotect/convert this file?

It's actually against copyright law in some countries,
and soon to be in many countries, to circumnavigate
copy protection systems.
Even if you live in a country with laws like the
Home Recording Act in the USA, it's still illegal
to copy music for personal use if the process you
go through involves avoiding copy protection.
This effectively means that laws like the USA's
Digital Millenium Copyright Act actually have far
wider impacts than many people have realized.
If you buy a normal CD with no copy protection you
can make a personal copy, but if you buy the same
songs in a digital download and it uses something
like Windows Media File copy protection then you
can't make a copy.
Does this mean that sales of digital downloads
could be something record companies use to end
personal copying? Or will people just use simple
software like Total Recorder to get around the
problem?
Post your ideas here I'd like to know what other
people think about this.
Alf.

It looks like Microsoft needs to further develop .wma as a standard, so it can be copied legally, burned as cd audio, and edited in popular editing/mixing software. Perhaps if everyone had a number burned into their forehead we could keep track of all this illegal music swapping...hehe, just kidding. Beanhead out.
Re: unprotecting .wma files
Microsoft just needs to relax, cause soon everyone will stop using these stupid .wma files and forget about them...
Copyright? Fa what?
However if anyone knows a converter that will do the job "illegally" plz let me know ;)
Thanx
Re: unprotecting .wma files
I have several wma files that I downloaded which I can't delete. I receive an error message which says the files are write protected. What can I do to eliminate these files from my computer?

u cannot delete a file which is being in use, for example, being loaded or being played at windows media player, try closing any programs that could be using it..

CD-R Discs
How do I make my iMac computer compadable so it can read CD-R discs?
Re: CD-R Discs
SImple.. do you ahve a CD-Rom? Then you should be able to read any CD, I have had one CD ever, that was burned with backup data, and it wouldn't read, however, any CD should work.
As for WRITING CD's, you need a CD writer or CD-R/RW

from what i've heard this can be caused by lack of free memory (gotta have alot of RAM for audio stuff) and perhaps the quantize may help. my cakewalk does a similar thing, i just try to copy and paste it to the right places... takes a long time.
PLEASE...PLEASE HELP ME:
I've looked at: "StreamBox Ripper"
but it doesn't work on my computer,, I can't download it!

I need a RealPlayer File (RealAudio?)

Dont even think about it on this board.
Hey, this is not the board for that sort of discussion. It's frowned upon here and cheeses off the people that will give you the correct answers to legitimate questions, okay?
Steve...
Hmmm
By chance is there a way to convert MIDI to Mp3 or some other format so they are playable on MP3 players? Just a thought as I hate not being to portabalize my MIDs
Midi and Audio
Hi,
Midi and Audio are like chalk and cheese. Midi is just data that lets a midi device (synth) know what it should be playing, when and how hard etc... The midi file would have to play a synth or similar device and then you would have the record the audio result coming out of that device and then convert that to MP3.

MP3 file conversion software needed
Is there any software available that will convert a MP3 file from one frequency rate, to a (obviously) lower rate. I need to convert large files (56Kbs)to lower bit rate (perhaps 32Kbs), so when I build my website I can make the sound files downloadable from the net?

Yup, Cool Edit 2000 will do that just fine. Win a free copy this week!

Please, don't do it. 3 out of 4 people find MIDI on websites highly annoying. If you want to keep your visitors happy, either include it as an option that needs to be turned on, or don't include it at all. Beanhead out.
