Can you please identify where I can find the latest self-installing Windows 98 ESS 1869F Audio Device
Advice needed on sound card purchase
I have CakeWalk Guitar Tracks Pro running on a PC with Windows XP Pro.
I am looking for advice on what sound card to purchase so that I can take advantage of CakeWalk's 24 bit/96khz capabilites. I of course want to spend the least amount possible. I will mostly be recording guitar/amp and vocals using a SM57 mic and adding drums electronically.
What cards should I look at in the under $200 range?
thanks!

better than 2496 is 32/192
Just be aware that 192kHz soundcards are out now, and many cards can do at least 32bits. 2496 is not quite there yet. Mastering studios use 192/56 or so, not the 44.1/16 which is so common for CD's. 44.1/16 is purely a playback format, not a pro recording format. Most computer programmers are only used to programming up to 32 bits, but that doesn't stop everyone--after all, 8 bit/22kHz used to be standard audio.

am i at the right place?
my compaq computer had some troubles, was fixed by phone with microsoft and now i dont have any sound. i go to multimedia from control panel and in the audio tab for playback device and recording device, it says "no devices" and it will not let me in to change it. hope this makes sense.
thx toni
Re: am i at the right place?
Two things you could try: reinstall the drivers or
go to My Computer - Control Panel - System - Device Manager. Click on the + sign next to Sound, Video and game controllers and see if your sound card is still listed. If it is, right-click on it and select remove. Then, reboot your PC and see if the system detects the card and reloads the drivers.
Let me know how you go on.

voice manipulation
Hello,
we have to improve a telephone voice signal. I use a professional telephone hybrid (to separate the voice properly) but the sound is very poor (16 khz or so). Does anybody have an idea to improve the signal with software?
Thank you very much
Eq...
...is the only thing I can think of. 16khz isn't right for your knowledge. I quoted 3-5khz (for British telephones) recently and someone (more than likely right) corrected me and quoted something like 800hz - 5khz.
In my book, making a vocal more prominant is possible around 500-800hz. As this appears to be the bottom floor of the 'supposed' telephone bandwidth. I have just researched a little on the internet and found a 300hz to -3khz. Sounds unlikely to me.. ;0)
Simple answer. Load the vocal into an audio editor that offers some half decent parametric eq. Work with frequencies between 500hz and 5khz and see what you can go. 1.5khz is a high frequency as is anything around and above 1khz. This will sharpen the sound. 2.5khz is a snappy kind of frequency. 800hz may not be easy to hear through a telephone line, I don't know.
Experiment..

Mosaic software
I'm having some problems with Mosaic software. Would like to hear from anyone who is using it successfully and is willing to discuss some specific glitches I can't seem to overcome.
i tried!
i tried to download the Atomix3 demo, and it wouldn't work.my pc is only a couple months old and it has Windows XP. what gives? any ideas?
XP compatible?
Check the spec's, it might not be.
XP is new as is Mac OSX. There is still work to be done on both OS's.

I take your point. I know me and others moaning about it doesn't help at all. Just makes me feel better I suppose.. ;0-

Wave-to-MIDI: Music Recogition Software?
Hi:
I want to record jazz CDs in order to try
and transcribe piano phrasings and potentially
sax and other solo instrument phrasings.
I'm just getting back into music softwares
after many, many years of neglect.
I've tried pulling down the free Real Jukebox
to make .wav files ---- and then tried using
Akoff's wave-to-MIDI, which was a bit disappointing.
Akoff's software might actually be pretty good
but I'm wondering if my sound card is too weak
or I need a higher sampling rate than what free
Real Jukebox has to offer.
So, has anyone out there already crossed these
bridges? What kind of sound card, what kind
of wave recorder, and what kind of MIDI studio
player has the best shot of making this
dream come true?
Or is the answer that the artifical intelligence
to carve out specific waveforms from a
polyphonic music CD just not good enough, yet?
I hope I'm clear about what I'm asking about?
Re: Wave-to-MIDI: Music Recogition Software?
The programs can't distinguish instruments like humans can. It doesn't work properly at all in my tests with these programs.
Logic audio give it a go but is only partially useful on monophonic instruments that don't slide off the notes too much..
I'd forget it if I were you.. ;0)

Re: download cd creater
If you're thinking about a program called Easy CD Creator, then it's a commercial program, and not legally available for download.
See more at roxio.com

Fat Bass Sound
What Bass generators are used for Rnb and Hip Hop productions (ie. not sampled from vinyl etc.) What programs do they use?
Re: Fat Bass Sound
There is no one type. I have heard synth and real basses used on both types of music.
Common dub bass sounds are often made up of two or three bass sounds. Some organs are pretty decent for that sustained bass note. Clean and low..
Not a great answer then...

Sorry dude, there isn't anything that will do an accurate job. Unlike some of these jokers on this site, I'll tell you why. I'm a parody writer, and I've tried cutting out the voice of songs for ages. You can take some things out of the song, like the bass or guitar or voice track, but it won't be completely removed... some of it will be left behind and other things will be lost too.
There are lots of programs (like cool edit, which I tried) that claim to be able to do this, but if you try to cut out the voice for instance, the voice will still half be there, and the entire drum track would be lost. Sound is divided into different channels, and if you tone down one to remove something, then other things will be lost.
So, it is practically impossible to remove parts of the song from the file, unless it's in a certain format (which definitely doesn't include MP3 and wav files). So, just do your best to try to isolate what you want with your ears, sorry.
Re:the program is Vision DSP from Opcode
I don't why I am telling you this because I don't work for Opcode . Anyway. Yes! Opcode has the Vision DSP program that allows you to do that. It is designed specifically for Macintosh from what I understand. I am a pianist, percussinist, and bassist. my field of expertise is Afri-American/Afro-Cuban classical muzik popularly and unpopularly known as Jazz, salsa, latin r&r etc.
I use the program to write arrangements. I love it. Now the only problem I have with it is that I would like to be able to put Congas on a MIDI Channel; traps on a MIDI Channel; cowbell on a channel etc.
I just wrote Opcode this morning and inquired as to why they can't make this so. Also it would sure be nice to have a book "Vision DSP For Dummies". Well let me know if you are aware of this program. I thinkl it's pretty slick.
can't make thjat possible.
Common question, here's the common answer...
No..
SteveR
Re:your common answer is in left field
Yes there is a program. Are you a musician and do you you sequence muzik arrangements sir? Obviously you are either a r&r musician or a hip hop wanna be. Most serious musicians I know are bona fide musicians. You sound like you are in a chat room. Talk to Jeeves my man.
Respectfully,

what software is needed to burn a music CD
what do I need to download to burn a music CD
Shannon this is my opinion - what software is needed to burn a m
: What do I need to download to burn a music CD.
You asked two questions.
1. Software to download (Music) I presume, or might you want to backup your newly purchased music CD? On the other hand, are you trying to log into a frowned upon Internet service to download music from someone else’s computer of copyright material? (Note: if you do this you will discover music copied from the latest CD purchase at a loud volume. George, uses low volume sometimes so you will almost need some type of after product to clean up the bad recording you will find on line. Or, for example you start downloading from Mike in New York and he shuts down, now you need to go find the selection again from another user, who sets his recorder to a boosted volume.
If your ISP service supplies a news group subscription, many times you will find a plethora of well recorded music. News group moderators toss poor music off, and admonish posters if they are just POP Music junkies without regards to quality. Or, there are, a number of Pirate, and junky Legitimate music services that do not provide what "Napster" did for music sales, before the record companies shot themselves in the foot and closed them down (forced them off line through the legal system.)
2. To burn a CD, I suggest you secure either Nero or Roxio's software, both companies have decent support sections if you get confused using their software. Roxio Platinum 5 or 6 is available off the shelf of most stores, if you want to pay more and not purchase on line. See URL listed below...
http://www.nero.com/en/index2.htm
http://www.roxio.com/index.jhtml
You didn't get any software with the CD burner??
Seeing you haven't mentioned your platform, I assume it's a windows machine.
Check out Nero, people seem to like that.
Any more?

WHAT'S THE NAME OF THIS SONG AND WHO IS IT BY? Please!
I've heard a snippet of this song...it sounds early-mid 90's alt rock-ish. The most memorable part of the song is the refrain: "...to see What trouble we could get into, what trouble we could get into, what trouble we could get into..."
I really hope someone can help me. Thanks.

How do I get the music I like off the internet or wherever, and get it into my burnering device.
Tempo ?
Good Morning ... I am in need of some help. Am looking for an editing program that will allow me to change the tempo, without chaning the pitch, of a mp3 or wav. Not a *big* change, just need to slow or speed up songs just a tad so that the tempo matches the stride of our horse ... We compete in musical freestyle events. Thank You. . . .
Time Stretching
That's referred to as Time Stretching. Changing the tempo without adjusting the pitch.
There a lots of programs that offer this, the best being the £700 Melodyne program.. ;0) Had to mention it...!
You can do this with almost any half decent audio editor. There are some stand alon programs like The Amazing Slowdowner.
Head for the audio editing link in the download area of this forum and have a sift around..
Good Luck
