i'we just got an old version of a yamaha dx7 syntesiser and connected it to my pc(win98)
the driver that ships with win 98 does not seem to be the best one.
does anyone have a driver that is optimal for this situation?

dbPowerAmp is an excellent program; let me know if you can't find it, and I'd be happy to send a copy... It can perform batch operations, and can convert to diiferent bitrates, and file formats.

Change it to a Wav/Aif file...

Convert the MP3 to a WAVE file and then re-MP3 it at the desired bit rate.

I don't know why you need to change the volume though unless you find it too quiet. If this is the case, then you need to normalise the wave file so that it is running at a volume just below digital clipping. Audio editors can do this quickly and easily.

NOTE: Don't be under the impression that increasing the bit rate of an MP3 that has already been converted at a lower bit rate will increase the quality (original bit rate). Once a Wave file has been converted, the information that was lost in the compression can NEVER be recovered. If you want a higher bit rate, then you have to have the original wave file that has never been compressed...

...but changing to a lower bitrate would be nice, since that would make the mp3 smaller, so you can fit more on a cd. That's usefull if you want to use that cd on a portable mp3 cd-player. That way you can fit more music on a single cd :o)

Thx for your response on my question 'Changing bitrate and volume of MP3 files (multitrack!)' on www.sharewaremusicmachine.com. What I really mean with the question is the following:

I have several MP3 files and I want to burn them on a CD. Only the problem is that the volume of the several MP3's isn't the same and the bitrate isn't either (128 or higher). I want to convert them all AT ONCE to the same volume and to the same bitrate (128). So not converting them one by one and not converting them to a higher bitrate. Do you know a way to handle this problem? With the help of a CD Burner or Audio Editor or something else?

Thx again for your respone and maybe for a solution.

Anybody know where I can get Mastertracks Pro 6.0 for PC. I need it to run on a 486DX66 with Dual AWE32 Sound Cards. If you maybe know of another program that will run on an old machine like this I'd appreciate the advice. The new version midi/audio packages can't be run on a 486DX66. Any help greatly appreciated.

An interesting topic for both musicians and music lovers is the issue of alternate methods of creating music.

I am a musician in Australia that has been using computers etc for years to create music, but I always found it hard to find others to collaborate with, which tended to affect my motivation etc. But I have just checked out a Global Production Network called Rocket Network (www.rocketnetwork.com) which is free to check out but basically allows you to collaborate musically with others anywhere in the world.

Anyway, just wanted to start a thread on alternate methods of collaboration and would be interested to hear your thoughts....

Software to monitor audio sounds from the radio

Similar to:

Cool Edit software (Syntrillium Corp.)

Spectrogram (Shareware)

Purpose:

To acquire and analyze sounds automatically from a radio audio output to search for certain sounds.

Steps in the software:

1. Sound is sampled every 2 or 5 msec for a time period of 25 msec via the sound card microphone coming from a conventional radio.

2. At 25 msec the sampling is stopped, and the input is analyzed by FFT (Fourier Transform) to produce a frequency profile, at a resolution of 50 hz.

3. Prior to the start of the program, 4 frequencies are chosen. From the profile the power is averaged for each frequency (over the 25 msec), and the 3 ratios (f1/f2, f2/f3, and f3/f4) are calculated.

4. Prior to the start of the program, limits are chosen for the frequency ratios. If any of the 3 ratios fall outside these limits, sampling restarts (step 1) and the process continues.

5. If all 3 ratios fall within the limits, the next 15 sec of sound is recorded. After this time the sampling restarts (step 1) and the process continues. The values of the frequency ratios are saved or displayed.

6. If there is more than one recording, the recorded sound is added to the previous one in the file.

7. Stop the program.

8. A function capable of playing the file is included so that the file can be played after the program is stopped.

Note: no graphics or wave displaying capabilities are required, but can be incorporated if desired.

[Spectrogram and Cool Edit data include the following:

Sample rate: 22k

Resolution: 16 bit

Mono or Stereo capability

Frequency resolution: 50 hz

Band 0-5500 hz

FFT size: 256 or 512 hz

Cool Edit uses Blackmann-Harris, Blackmann, Welch, Hamming, Hanning, and Triangular methods for analysis]

MMJB.EXE disappeared

I tried to play a cd and a message appears that the
MMJB.exe file can not be located. I did a search and
it is no longer on my computer. I would not have deleted
it because I never knew it even existed until that message
appeared. I can not play my cd's on my computer. :( Can
someone tell me what happened and how to fix this?

ME TOO, maybe it's on the windows install cd but I'm too lazy to look for the cd. let me know if anyone finds it.

is worth a look although it will only suit some people. It attempts to play tunes for you that they have already made or that you create yourself... that's all I know about it....
