Create dance-music tracks on a laptop?

Hello. I currently DJ and would like to go further into remixing tracks and creating totally new ones BUT I have no classical music background. Is it possible to do this on a laptop or do I need to add a special sound card in order to use MIDI ? (I only have a PC laptop and not a Mac laptop).

Other than Cubase or Logic for sequencing, Rebirth for a synthesizer, and B.box for a drum machine, is there anything else that I can get that's not too expensive ?

Do I need to get any periperals ?

Thank you so much. Sorry I'm so silly.

Re: Create dance-music tracks on a laptop?

Hello

I'd also recommend you at least take a look at <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SonicFoundryAcid/">Acid</a> and <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/FruityLoops_win95/">FruityLoops</a>.

Cheers

Re: Create dance-music tracks on a laptop?

All u need is a midi compliant soundcard and most if not all have built in midi sounds. The laptop card maybe integrated which means u can't replace it if so u could load an emulated card (software) for midi sounds Yamaha's SY-XG50/100 is a good one.

Qbase or Logic is sensible but I wouldn't tie myself down at this stage to Rebirth + B Box. Try lots of more programs like FruityLoops for beats + synth and VST synths which will work in CubaseVST like ModelE. You don't need to read score as midi data is entered on a grid alongside a piano representation. Mac software is limited in numbers so better with a PC platform, u may want to get a keyboard to soundcard adapter for your setup but all can be done with mouse no probs. You should have 96MB RAM min. Hope this helps.

Mac - Toast 4.0

Is there a Mac shareware or freeware similar to Toast 4.0? Specifically, that will take my MP3 files and convert them as I'm burning a CD so I can play it in my car? If I can convert them as I'm burning I won't have to first convert and use up storage space on my hard drive.
Thanks,
Lou

Jam...

Jam unfortunately, is quite expensive and commercial rather than shareware. I have no reason to look for other burning software as it's not required. Jam (from adaptec) allows you to burn audio from MP3's or .AIF/.WAV and cross fade and do funky things with fade outs etc... If you can find it cheap then get it.

It is worth having a look around C-net or TUCOWS (recommended) for CDR software as they have so much Mac software (Yes, there is tons and tons of Mac software....)

Re: the best music machine for me

Hi Iftach,
I saw a program here in UK about the Israel dance/club scene just the other night - you guys really into it over there! - nice. A program u caould try is FruityLoops which is easy to use, comes with great samples and a built in synth - the TS404. Listen to the included demo songs and see what u think. Orion is another fairly easy to use app which Id recommend u check out - software link at top of main page should take u to demo downloads/homepages.

Info on Key Change

I am looking for a software package that will change a
peace of music from one key to an other without changing
integrity of the peace, for instance from 5 sharps to 3
flats. If you know of such a software package please let
me know. Thank you.

Re: Info on Key Change

An 'audio editor' such as Cool Edit will pitch change a .wav music file without changing it's temo - not sure about sharps/flats - if u mean major to minor key change then I'd say that is impossible.

Mac beginning recording help

I come from a multi-track, tape recording background (guitar, keyboard, bass - no midi experience) and I'm now just getting into digital recording on my Mac (8500 upped to a G3). I'd appreciate ANY help (i.e. resources, info, advice, soft/hardware, etc.) that you could offer. Hey, I don't even know how to get sound into my Mac other than using that wimpy little mike that came with it! Do I need some kind of Pre-amp? Can I use any pre-amp system? Can I do any damage to my Mac if I don't know what I'm doing? Thanks!!

Re: Mac beginning recording help

hello robert, I 'm a musician old style like you, I have a multitrack system on tape and I want starting to record up with my mac, old but good.. sorry for my terrible english.. but I tell you that for me we have to change the recording tape with the mac, completely... oter machines like expanders, drum machines, etc.. are the same things, only recorder have to change with a software like protools or cubase.. I will write to you next month for last news in my studio..

bye alex

Mac's

Mac's are the industry standard Music Computer for good reason. You can do anything you want with Audio or Midi on your Mac. The best thing to do is have a leaf through the software area on this board and find yourself a demo of something like Cubase (Audio and Midi sequencing) and struggle your way through it. This is general advice as I have found that people learn the most from fiddling and reading. If you have a go at Cubase or any other Audio sequencer then you will have the option to record music from the Audio input on your computer. (Control panels > sound(monitors & sound) > select "MIC input") or from the internal sound OR the CD rom. After you have messed around there, you could look into Midi interfaces that plug into the printer or modem port on you computer and allow you to connect to Midi devices like Synthesizers/Drum machines etc, enabling you to record and edit, what you aare playing on the keyboard.

It's a big wide musical world out there and you have to play and experiment to get to where you want to go. Try Cubase (or something lighter, have a look), it'll get you started, then come back here and ask some more...

By the way, your Mac will work a standard Dynamic style microphone although I always recommend having a mixing desk around to level everything properly. You can also plug in a line level to the Mac from a tape deck (not record player! or guitar) or video etc...

Good luck...

Re: Mac beginning recording help

Hi Rob,

So u have a Mac? We'll that's a bad place to start from I'm affraid as the majority of the music software market is focused on PC - but this just means that your choices will be a bit limited!

What u need for guitar etc recording is a 'sequencer' such as Cakewalk Metro, Cubase/Cubasis or one from the Logic range. U use a sequencer just like a multi tracker only it enjoys digital quality recording, editing, effects sends, midi integration, mixdown facilities etc - a virtual studio infact! Click the software link at top of main page and specify Mac for a list of relevant software. You will input via soundcard mic/lin in and yes preferablly via a preamp - I use my old Tascam Porta Two using it's line outs for low S/N ratio. Finally the more RAM the merrier so have 96 or 64MB bare minimum.

Massiva-Questions about...

I've just downloaded Massiva and am busy leafing thru very detailed instructions,(Bravo for this!. What I am wondering is how plug-ins are assigned to each channel. There doesn't seem to be a menu where this is done. I can loan them fine from the plug-ins menu but, how are they assigned to a particular track.
Also have eMonster 550mHz w/ Crystal SoundFusion. Have had problems with audio output on software I have downloaded and am just wondering if if there compatability issues I need to watch out for in the system requirements before I bother downloading.
No problems with your service people;fantastic publication even just to stay informed of what is out there.Thanx, eh.

cd+g recording

I use cd+g karaoke recordings to perform live shows; I would like to be able to make cd+g cd's with only the songs on them which I need for a particular show. This would eliminate the process of changing cd+g recordings while performing. Is there simple process to accomplish this that could be used by a computer-dummy like myself?

Thanks,
Don

HELP!!!! Audiowerks2 or Korg 1212

I've been researching both cards. Trying to find out everything about them and I have some leads on great deals on either of them.

If anyone could let me know pros and cons, I would be very greatful. By the way I'm using a MAC.

Thank!!!

Uncanny...

I had the option a few months ago of either cards and ended up going for the Korg1212.

The main reason for that was, all I really wanted was a SP/DIF in and out and a pro-sounding RCA in and out. The AudioWerk card was more than likely the best option for me as I use Logic Audio (same company) and it would probably have been flawless. The reason I went for the Korg is because it was pretty much the same price, offered 20bit recording AND has ADAT Optical connections which means I could plug it in as 8 in 8 out digital optical to connect to ADAT connectored Mixing Desks etc...

The one thing I will say about the Korg1212 is the driver software is Naff. I have found it very unrealiable to get going with and it messed up the simplicity of the Audio running of my G4. Things have carmed down now and I only occasionally have a weird audio problem. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Other than that, the korg sounds lush even in 16bit mode and has improved the audio quality of my recordings no end. It comes with no bundled software generally where as the Audiowerk comes with a few titles. I think it's only 18bit versus the 20bit Korg1212 although close you eyes and you will more than likely never tell the difference.. If you think you will never use the ADAT ins and outs (Nice..!) then go for the Audiowerk as it is more than likely easier to setup and use. If you want the ADAT connector or think you may use it in the future, get the Korg and see if you can live with the software.

rms(real jukebox) convert to mp3

i recorded my cds to my hard drive and the computer crashed. i had to reload windows in doing so i lost all the cds. is there any way to convert rms to mp3?

Is it possible to diagnose/fix cdr's that show tracks recorded b

I have an HP CD Writer Plus, burn cd's using either Adaptec or Real JukeboxPlus and make sure all tracks are in wav format. Although most cd's created work fine, it never fails that for whatever reason some won't play after creation. All tracks will show as being written, and I've verified that session is closed, but they won't play. What I can't figure out is, when a copy of the cd that won't play is burned the copied cd plays fine. I probably have a stack of 50 (at least) cdr's that I need to find out if there is something I can do to fix them or are they a lost cause? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

asio-compatible midi sequence software

can u tell me what "asio compatible midi sequence software" is? is it cubase?
& how do i go about getting it?

Re: asio-compatible midi sequence software

Yes Cubase VST 5 can use it for sure - maybe some ealier versions too and Logic Audio and maybe other sequencers?

Audio Sequencing Informational Organisation (I think!) - it's an alternative soundcard driver system I believe which reduces latency - time lag - between host (Qbase eg) and soundcard/module. You can find Qbase from this sites software section - link near top of main page.
