"Closing" a recording on a CD hangs my pc!
I've got a 128mb 450Mhz pIII system with Adaptec EZ CD Creator 4.02 and separate CD-RW & DVD drives. Every time I get to the closing phase of a cd-burning session everything stops at about 97-99% complete and my pc freezes. I have to manually reboot, and the CD plays okay after all! What gives?

Burning mp3s NOT in cda format
Hi
I need to burn mp3s to a distk, but want them to remain in
mp3 format. I have a lot of mp3s I would like to transfer
to my brothers computer. I tried to put them on a couple
of CDRWs in ISO 9660 format. They showed up ok, but the
timing was totaly screwed. If you tried to play a file
it would actualy be the last half of one file and the
first half of another one. Always from somewhere further
back in the list of files.
It isn't just a problem reading from the CD-Rom, as copying
the files onto the hard drive doesn't help. Is there any way
to successfuly store mp3 files on a CD?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)
data storage
Yes you don't want to and can't save mp3s on a CD in CDA format (read by CD players). Only .wavs will go through this process. You want to use the CD for 'data' storage only and I'm no expert but you should be able to tell burning software to store in 'data type' or something?

Macman MIDI Interface on a PowerMac G3
Trying to get my G3 with OMS to talk to a Yamaha PSR270 keyboard through a Macman Interface. Can anyone help?
What's the problem??
Do you get anything at all. I don't think the Macman actually needs OMS as my friend uses it without it. I have to use it with My Midisport USB 2x2 but it was as easy as you like to set up. You have to run the OMS studio setup and run whatever OMS drivers you have for the MacMac so that OMS knows what it's dealing with.

Only sure way to dump the virus is to reinstall operating system
This is not difficult if u have OS CD. You make a booting floopy disk with Windows and use it to partition your hard drive (and hence scrub it clean of ALL programs/viruses) before reinstalling Windows 98 or whatever u are on. Check manuals/website to ensure u know the steps before proceeding - u can't break the computer but if u can't reboot a shop will do it for u for a small fee.
U put in floopy before switching on then after a few steps put in CD - u may need CD ROM drivers put on another floopy too so copy them from your computer - takes 1 hour to reload Windows. This may sound a bit of a drag but with a fresh system install you will have a clear hard drive and everything will run that little bit faster/smoother.

Why is there no software for making Continuous DJ mix CDs??
I have found tonnes of software that will allow me to mix, fade, edit, beat-match, pitch-alter music so that I can end up with a full-length continuously mixed file or CD (whether it be WAV or MP3) BUT I have still to find a software that will burn this file with track marks in it so that I can skip tracks when playing the CD in my home stereo.
Does anyone know of a software that will do this?
PS: MP3 Surgeon does not.
Re: Why is there no software for making Continuous DJ mix CDs??
What you're needing is a CDR burning software that allows you to edit time between tracks and create multiple tracks with a single WAV file. I would suggest CD Architect from Sonic Foundry. I believe there is a standalone version, but I'm not sure. It allows you to add a wav file, define track separation points, and edit the time between those tracks (i.e. 0-out the time to allow for a continuous CD). The end result allows you to skip through tracks on the CD, or play a continuous mix.

OK, hears the deal. I'm using a Fostex FD-4 right now but obviously I'm running into track shortage bigtime. So I've been looking into using my PC. I've demoed several different ones but I just haven't been satisfied w/ the results. I think the main problem is that I'm only running a 166. I'm not against getting a new computer if I thought that there was software out there that I could really be happy with. I'm sure my computer is the reason I haven't been impressed with the software, so any advice on software if I'm running a faster PC? Thanks, Jim
Lots of...
There is lots of software that will put your lowly 4 track to shame and you wouldn't have to spend much to get it. Logic audio Fun is generally given away free on the front of magazines which I think would give you 8 tracks. (It's a start!) You could then move to Logic AV which I think allows 16 tracks (plus midi) with E-magic and VST effects compatibility. There is Cubase as well that runs from Cubasis upto the far more serious Cubase 5.0 that will cost you a lot more but offers you a serious multitrack studio running in a 24bit environment (depending on your input output capabilities).
If you are thinking of buying a new 'puter, I can't help but recommend the Macintosh G4 which I use and love. I can get over 40 tracks of audio at 16bit running in realtime with many effects and that's just using the internal 10Gig system drive. If you want a system that is as good as made for the job then look no further. If you are used to the Microsoft platform and don't want to move then make sure that everything you buy for the computer is not cheap and cheerful (as is often the case) and is specified for use as a Multimedia and Pro Audio setup. You will kick yourself if you have a dodgy HD controller and a slow HD and only get 16 tracks of something where the machine may be capable of more. Get yourself a "PROPER" audio in and out interface which will reduce the amount of latency (delay) you get with midi and audio. Look at the price of both of the systems and then decide. Mac's are often seen as over priced compared to Microsoft machines. Look at them side by side, feel the quality and usability and then decide...

motu2408mk2 vs digioo1/ cubase vs performer?
I am new to digital audio. I have a mac g4 as well as a powerbook. I am into "loop" based groove music, but am a guitar player, and want flexability in intigrating guitar into loops etc...
My confussion is how is the best way to go about this
I hear motu stuff is good. But most of the music mags, don't really give advice, they seem to promote whoever
they reviewed that month.
So I am torn between a mk2/digital performer, or digi001/cubase......any feedback is humbly appreciated
Digi001
Hi,
I have a G4/400 and use it with a Korg 1212 (ropey software but sounds nice) and Logic Audio Platinum. I would consider the 001 as it comes with Pro-tools lite which will give you 24 tracks through a proper 24bit input output interface. If you want to plug your guitar in then "definately" get a Direct Injection box or it will sounds *%^&. I play the guitar and program and arrange on the G4 and it's more than amazing for this purpose. Logic platinum gives me over 40 tracks of audio running in realtime from the internal HD with a bunch of effects and Eq's. You have an excellent machine for the job and if you get the digi001 then you will have some lovely software too!
Logic and Cubase are optimised for the G4 velocity engine which rises the machines capabilities above the rest. Make sure that what you choose makes good use of the G4's Altivec (velocity engine) hardware and you will be sorted.
Cheers

I've never seen cubase running with the digi001 before but I use Digital Performer 2.7 and the 2408 every day and can say that DP is a rock solid, excellently written program. The main difference between the DP/2408 system and digioo1 is expandability. The digi001 comes with a few midi ports and a few i/os but is non-expandable whereas the DP system is but you have to buy a midi interface. If you are not going to use the supplied 24 track PT LE and buy cubase you might as well go for the DP system and a cheap midi box check motu's web site. The digi001 is hard to beat though. I think it's about $800 now. You get a lot and it works. Bottom line. If you think you'll ever need more than 24 tracks or more than a few midi channels go 2408 otherwise you should be ok with digi001.
using plug-ins with Samplitude
How do you use the plug-ins? When I try and use Samplitude, none of the effects are activated, even when I try loading plug-in effects (Direct-X, etc).
Can anyone help?

Using plug-in's with samplitude is actually quite easy. There are three different ways to apply plug-ins. You can insert realtime plug-ins to the entire project by clicking of the Direct X button on the right side of the mix window. You can add a real time plug-ins to each individual track by clicking the add plug-in button on the left side of the track. You can also add an effect destructively to each individual audio clip. Have you got any Direct X plug-ins installed on your machine? They should pop up in the list when you go to add a plug-in if you do.

Downloads from the net

I want to download loadsa reggae, R&B, SOUL, ETC FROM THE NET WITHOUT paying .
Can you help?
stealing
Well that's very naughty isn't it? Why not pay for it? You'd expect to be paid for the work you do wouldn't you?
steve
Maybe
That would depend on who's selling. If it's the corrupt and stiffling music industry boffs then steal away. They've been doing it for long enough from us...
Closh...
Re: Maybe
Ahh but the bands themselves are complaining about 'lost revenue' not just record companies!
It's a difficult question but the future of Napster is now subsciption! This should make the 'stealing' more rwarding for the poor artists who need more cars and bigger pools in which to rest after working so hard all morning :)

Yes. At least a tiny minority of the worlds quality musicians and songwriters that is. I doubt anyone that comes to this board will make any large sums of money out of the music industry. It is a closed door which is opened to the best easy money hopes only. I doubt that many of the people even inside are making any of the money anyway. A very very small few of the millions available. I would never begrudge the musician that is making a bunch of money out of the industry as someone has to. It just seems a shame we should support the music industry hounds that have robbed BOTH the customer AND the performer for such a long time. The napster thieves are more than likely uneffected by the thought of the poor artists, if anything, the artist on on our their (our) side. It's more than likely they are poor because of some other theiving industry anyway... There is no guilt here I can tell you...
best wishes

Cakewalk PA 8 can´t run with Sound Blaster Live
I´ve just put this new audio card Sound Blaster Live on my Compaq, but can´t run any cakewalk software with it. Some Kernel32 error appears, so I try everything, restart Windows, unable my old audio card even when there´s no conflict between, then I install Cubase, but there are really hard problems for any multitrack software with DLL files, I guess. Please, anyone can help me!!!

Cakewalk PA 8.0 will work with Sound Blaster Live. I've used it. You must have some other type of problem. Cakewalk can be a bitch to get going sometimes. If you are already using another audio program when you go to start up cakewalk you will get an error.
JP
Try this
You might want to try reinstalling windows, as it tends to become corrupt, if you will, over time. I am running CWPA 8 with a Live and I love it. I mean it isn't a perfect rig, but it gets the job done.

which wav player is best for my system
i need to choose a wav player but i am not sure which one is best for my system. i currently have windows 98 so which do i need in order to be able to hear different music from various sites
Re: which wav player is best for my system - none!
Well Latarsha .wav files are very rare on the internet because they are so BIG! MP3 is the file compression format most widely used for music storage on the net - so u need an mp3 player!! There are many nice ones about - try 'Winamp' and 'Sonique' both freeware.
Also if u download the Napster software u can search for songs and play them with it's built in mp3 player.

New CD Burner with NO software???
I suggest you contact the Burners manufacturer and ask them what the score is. Supplying a burner with no software is not on. If no luck with them you should have the right to return for a full refund. Goods must be fully functional/operational and be supplied 'as advertised' by law in UK anyway.
