use an audio editor (Sampled is freeware or Cool Edit Pro about $40). This will load the big wav and allow u to trim off the bits u don't want then export the remainder. Any audio sequencer will do exactly the same sort of edit job for u too.

Sound card problems

Could any one out there point me in the right direction.I recently upgraded to windows ME and now i cannot play back music of any sort, my pc is telling me that my sound card is in use by something else, or, as i think, my driver needs upgrading?. please can someone give me advice or point me to a web site for driver updates,the sound card i currently have is a soundpro!. Does error CM18330 mean anything to you.

try reinstalling soundcard software or drivers

When u upgraded Bob the souncards files may have been overwritten or corrupted. Simply reinstall the relevant software which may have come on a CD with your computer? CM18330 is your soundcard not a error type! I know cause I just checked and mine is a similar number. Go under - Start>Settings>Control Pannels>System>Device Manager>Sound Video and Game controllers and you will find your card (C-Media) listed. Click it and then 'Driver'. You should click 'update driver' and allow Windows to search for the driver off the CD if u have it. If not visit the C-Media Electronics site - http://www.cmedia.com.tw/ where u should look for your cards specific driver OK?

i dont know if this will help. its not an editor but it does take your loops and you can edit them in this program...rebirth...the new version you can create your own modifications to the program...loading into it your own loops... it takes aiff and wave files... you also have two synthesysers... i i downloaded sonicworks from hitsquad and edit my loops with that its a very simple way... then i take them into rebirth and create my own music... i dont know if that will help or not

...many programs that are like Acid as I work in a multitrack environment, although I think Groove maker is as good as any. If you want to loop audio then you could use anything like Cubase or Logic. All you do is record what you want to loop (.AIFF/.WAV) and then drag it into the audio window of the program. The track on screen could then be looped/reversed/effected slowed down, speeded up etc... You could add almost anything in a Multitrack environment and pump it out as a resulting .AIF or .WAV file for mastering or Burning. Peak is a great Mac audio editor a la soundforge. You could also investigate Spark. I think there is a demo for Spark on this site although it is more a mastering/editing tool than a looping tool.

Try this, although I'm not 100% sure it will work. As it is playing, go into realplayer and add it to your 'favourites.' It will get saved to your hard drive, probably under 'temporary internet files.' To play the file, you could open realplayer, then pick the file from 'favourites.' Sorry if this doesn't work.

Napster is turning into a pay thing soon and if you are into the whole free the music industry idea then go with something like Gnutella which is a non server based file exhange. I suspect that a lot of people will be hanging out there when the Napster thing goes rotten so get in there. Can't recommend the software but I have a Macintosh client that does the job. The software started on the Microsoft platform so it should be easy to find.

Stuff the music industry and the money filterers... we pay enough already. Grab what you can, you know they would..>!!!

A beautiful thing would happen. The music industry would lose it's hold on all the musical restraints that have been imposed on the listener and the creator alike. The problem is, most people are so used to how things are that it's easy to forget that there are millions and millions of different artists to listen to that have been shackled at home without any means of making themselves heard other than to play at the local bar etc... These people can now make their music available on the internet for people to download free or at a cost, it's their choice.

The music industry does nothing but pay itself and throw some crumbs to their few selected artists before sending them back out into the cold when they can't be bothered to promote them anymore. The amount of bands, musicians songwriters etc etc... that could be set free would change music listening pleasures around the world. The radio stations wouldn't be stuck with having to repeat the same old hits, hour after hour and could play music from many different angles. Internet radio was better than any terrestrial station when it first kicked off. I haven't listened to the radio for months now. The music industry has dumbed down the public for too long but luckily, it's match has been met. Sorry to go on but, things are changing for the better, for us, for the musician. Stuff Metallica, they've had plenty of money out of us and they aren't that good.

I can't help but agree with most of what you've said here SteveR but my question about what happens when THE ARTISTS themselves make no money because nobody is buying anymore still stands. For 'professional' music makers to exist there needs to be a 'profession' in which to work and make money.

If all music was done for free there would be little incentive for advancement in musical technology (which has brought us 'electronic' music in it's many wonderful forms) because the users wouldn't have the money to make the R+D process 'financially viable' - not enough returns. This sounds like a capitalist argument in a way but there IS a bit of truth in most things somewhere and it's true to say that music exists as it does today (and we have great music software) because of the monetary success of the music industry. Music is money (and much more obviously) but that is NOT a bad thing - money is not bad but unequal distribution of it certainly is. So I'd argue that we do need to pay for music (agreed much less than now) if it is to continue to evolve as is did in the 20th Century.

You know there is a good argument for keeping as much money as possible AWAY from the music makers! It has been shown in all too many cases that when artists come into a lot of money they lose their creativity, turn into idiots and end up dead at the bottom of their pools (which are so big and deep that no one sees them lying on the bottom in time). Atleast with the present set up most of the drugs are taken by the record label staff thus keeping the 'messed up dickheads on stage' count to a minimum.

Anyway the answer may be this: you may have been banned from Napster - as many people have - for downloading artists who have objected to the whole concept of stealing songs without paying the artist a penny (nice eh?)

Try uninstalling Napster and deleting all relevant files before reinstalling and using a different name OK?

Pro Tools Free

Thanks for the offer, but I see that AMD K6 and K6-2 are incompatable for Pro Tols Free download. I have the AMD K62-500, and only 128MB of RAM. Should I be downloading ProToolsFRee or not? Stupid me, I went out and got 64MB RAM today , just for this, and now I read I should actually have more...Looks like I missed the boat? I did download it two weeks ago, and it froze me, so I uninstalled,deleted,etc. untill it was all gone...really wanted to try it...?Not recommended,eh?

AMD incompatability

I think this incompatability problem is quite strange and worrying. Hardly any software manufactureres garantee AMD compatability as they all test on Intels. Stienberg do I believe with Cubase. I also read that chip make should have NO impact but that's clearly wrong acording to digidesign. Kevin I used Intel Celeron 96MB RAM and it played the demo song fine. It's a great freebie - maybe with the extra RAM you will get along with just a few crashes now and again? If so regular saving will make things bearable.
128RAM min means you should be fine with that so long as you don't click around too fast and keep effects/audio tracks to a min of probably 10-15 or so - enough for most:)

Note Kevin that AMDs are said by digidesign to heve been 'very problematic' not 'incompatible'. The problem could be anywhere and some AMD chip based PCs may be fine. Either way it should still work regardless of some 'problems'. Maybe u could let us know on the board if u try it again as I'm sure a lot of people like me are contemplating buying a value AMD based PC.

I think that the problem with AMD chips is that they don't have a floating point, which prevents them from performing complex calculations precisly.

Umm well could be. I'm no expert but I know most software developers test on Intels and hence the software itself may not function properly on the AMD chip as opposed to the chip not functioning properly with software. Does that make sense? Same thing really?!

I just purchased a Compaq Presario US 7000 Special Edition PC with an 80 GB Hard Drive, 256 MB SDRAM and an AMD Athlon 1200 1.2 Gigahertz Processor with an upgrade to the video card to a Radeon 64MB 3D card. The CPU also has a CD Burner and seperate DVD Drive and runs on Windoes ME for an operating system. Is this a compatable system for the Pro Tools system and all its components including the free downloads. I read here that there was a problem with using this stuff with an AMD Athlon and I wanted to know if mine applied as well. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

I recently tried to install Pro Tools Free on 2 AMD Athlon computers.
The 600 MHz version installed without any problems, but the 800 MHz freezes when creating a new track.

The system setups are similar - No real answer to your question!
