Need simple audio recording software
Hello all,
I'm looking for recommendations for software. I have two needs:
1 - I need basic recording software that will let me record 3:30 minutes of speech for a radio program. I want to record the program to hard disk and then mix it (using another program - #2). I need to make sure the recording software can handle a format that will eventually end up on a CD. But it doesn't need to be complicated. The user making the recording needs to have as few technical distractions as possible as he is not highly computer literate. (I considered using Windows recorder but it appears to only be able to record about :30 seconds at a time. However, I'd love to have something that simple that would do a quality job of recording.)
2 - I need software that will allow me to mix three different .wav files. I'm thinking of fasoft's n-track studio (I think that's what it's called) based on some responses I've seen. Any other suggestions?
Here's what I'm trying to do. One individual will record a 3:30 minute message at his computer. I will then access that .wav file over our network to combine it with a prerecorded musical .wav file for intro and outro and an anouncer's voice over. The final result will be a 4:00 minute radio program that will then be burned to a CD along with as many programs as will fit on a CD (I'm guessing around 15-18). If you have any suggestions for improving the process, please let me know. Thanks!
Nathan
P.S. I would appreciate email responses in addition to postings here if possible.

Re: Need simple audio recording software
Hello,
I would Strongly advise you to get a copy of "CoolEdit 96" It easy to use simple commands that let you manipulate sound files to your own needs....You should buy it ! as the Demo version restricts u to only using to functions of its program at a time (of running the program) such as ...i always Checked "save" and than "amplify"
than i have to exit the program...start it up and choose "save" and than "reverb"....its a long and painful process with the amount of time you waste...cool edit 2000 is just a touch up from 96
more functions are at your finger tips...from adding an effect that sounds like a Music song is Powering down (Normal speed to slowing down until stopped) to Getting rid Of annoying Pops/Clicks and terrible audio "Hissing" ((these are Plug-in)) software that you would have to buy....So Cool Edit is the program for you....u are able to "mix" files with it "record" (as much as your hard drive space consists of---unlimited timed recording) and are able to manipulate Effects to your "Master Piece" Reverb,Flange,Distort,Echo....Please invest in it
Cool edit 2000 or 96 (Simplier version with out as many functions as 2000)

How do you convert Midi files to mp3 or wav?
I am trying to convert some files to mp3 or wav so I can make a cd. I read below that you can record the output of your mid files to the soundcard or something like that. How do you do that? I have NTI and Adaptec cd creators but the will only do wav or mp3. Thank you very much for your help.

1) first you have to convert the midi to wav. There are a couple of shareware programs that can do that: Wavmaker and Audio Compositor. I prefer the latter so that's what I'm gonna explain.
2)First, You need a soundfont, which is basically a set of samples. A GM soundfont contains all the 128 patches (instruments) associated with general midi, and that's what you need. You can find them for free on the net (try http://www.pvv.org/~thammer/HammerSound ).
3) If you have doubts about using AC, there's a nice tutorial in this site, in the advices section.
4)The end result is a wav file. You can burn it on cd directly through adaptec EZ creator or convert it to MP3 using one of the many free encoders(Blade for example).
good luck

Simulators!
Right I love the sound that Norman Cook(aka Fatboy Slim) produces. I have used many prorams but none of them seem to get quite the right sound.
I was wondering if there are any simulaters which make a similar sound to this equipment.
1 - Atari ST computer with Creator software for sequencing
1 - Roland CR-78 Drum Machine
1 - Roland TB-303
1 - Roland TR-808
1 - Roland TR-909
2 - Akai S950 Samplers
2 - Technics 1200 Turntables
I have used rebirth and there seem to be some problems with it.PLease reply soon

Re: Simulators!
CR-78 .wav samples can be found on line at various sample sites.
TB-303,808,909 can be cloned in rebirth.
s950 sampler???? How do you clone the "sound" of sampler!?!?! Any sampler will sound the same. Try gigasampler if your pc is fast enough.
2 tech 12's? What are they suppose to sound like?

Scanning Sheet Music
Is there another sheet music scanning software programme besides Musitek's MidiScan and Pianoscan or have they cornered the market?
Re: Scanning Sheet Music
: Is there another sheet music scanning software programme besides Musitek's MidiScan and Pianoscan or have they cornered the market?
Depends what you want to do, but SharpEye converts sheet music to Midi file (see www.visiv.co.uk) and Music Publisher has an optional add-on (written by Visiv as it happens) to scan sheet music. You can then edit it, transpose etc through the normal Music Publisher functions.
Music Publisher is $120 and download from www.muspub.com
Re: Scanning Sheet Music
: Is there another sheet music scanning software programme besides Musitek's MidiScan and Pianoscan or have they cornered the market?
It's true that there are only a handfull of this type of
software and that Musitek is a leader in this area.
However, D & O Guillion of <a href="http://www.myriad-online.com/">Myriad Online</a> created OMeR - the Optical Music easy Reader for Macintosh. It runs with their notation
packages, Melody Assistant and Harmony Assistant. You would be looking at around $30US (cash) or $36US (credit card/check)
for Melody Assistant and OMeR; $80US (cash) for Harmony Assistant and OMeR.
This is opposed to $399 for SmartScore (MIDISCAN and PianoScan have been superseded by SmartScore and are no longer being shipped).
See these pages for Demos -

SB Live! getting feedback...-help!!!
I use my sb live to recoed and playback music through my stero pre-amp mixer. It worked fine until a couple of days ago, then I turned on m\y stero and I just get static feedback. If I usae computer speakers or headphones it works fine. Only when I plug it onto my mixer, my eq or stereo, or any combination, do I get this feebback...
Is there any way to fix this??? creative says they don't support this kind of problem (*%^*%* ...
Any help is appreciated.
Re: SB Live! getting feedback...-help!!!
If this is only started to happen check all your cables and check the power supply. Make sure you have pluged in all the right cables into the right holes

You have to enable the multirecord mode in cubase vst.
You will find this function in the options scroll.

I need a music editing program with quite a few features.
I work at a skating rink and we are remodeling our D.J. booth. We will be putting in a Mac G4. I need a program(s) that will do the following:
-play MP3
-change aiff and wav files to a more compressed form (like MP3)
-music mixing and editing capabilities:
master tempo control,
cutting and pasting
bpm counter
beat looping
maybe some f/x
-capable of creating a radio ad with voice and sound f/x (professional quality)
-music video playing capability
-compression of videos into a smaller file (keeping the quality)
-files (music or video) downloadable by firewire
Well that is my list of required features. If I can find all of them in one program, that would be great. But if I need a couple of different programs, that is o.k. too.
I am also in the market for a DVD player with a firewire port.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Re: I need a music editing program with quite a few features.
A music software program with all those features would
a wonderful thing, but that would also mean it would not
be speacialised in all of those features. I would recommend that
you use separate software for CD to MP3, Audio editing and mixing,
and Video editing.
Below are some programs for the MAC that are very popular for
the purposes you describe:
<a href="/smm/programs/Hit_Factory/">AudioFusion TWS</a> - Shareware - $65
<a href="/smm/programs/GrooveMaker_mac/">GrooveMaker</a> - Demo - $79.95
<a href="/smm/programs/Cakewalk_Metro/">Cakewalk Metro</a> - Demo
<a href="/smm/programs/sonicWORX_basic/">sonicWORX Basic</a> - Freeware
<a href="/smm/programs/Sound_Sculpter/">Sound Sculptor II</a> - Shareware - $30
Have a look <a href="http://www.mp3machine.com/mac/ENCODERS/">here</a> for a Macintosh MP3 encoder.
Best of luck.

Before using your MP3 beats and samples you will
need to convert them to .wav files. You can use a
program like <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/CDH_Media_Wizard/">CDH Media Wizard</a> to do this.
You bought the wrong tool...

If you want to make music mainly based on
samples and beats and loops I guess Cubase
is not the tool for you. You'd better bought
something like Acid or Fruity or Tuareg for
such ways of making music.
check out the demos for those on this site.

Re: How can I copy and save a music from CD to hard disk?
When I try and copy a music CD to a blank CD, my computer does not copy, but freezes up forcing me to un plug it. This causes more problems.
