.ram files are playlists that, when set up properly, are designed to prevent you from doing this sort of thing. .ra (rEAL aUDIO) files are the actual media files ( as in .mp3 vs. .m3u ) if it is an old real file. Newer Real files have a .rm (rEAL mEDIA) extension.

Streambox ripper used to allow you to record RAM files, but Real Networks sued them and this functionality was removed.

If you don't have access to the .ra / .rm files you are probably trying to pirate music that somebody else worked awfully hard to create. Why not consider asking, or even <<gasp>> paying, the author for a for the content in a more suitable format?

If you really want to get past them though...
Save the .ram file.
Open it in a text editor, like notepad.
The URL's in the file are what is actually being played.
If there are http:: URL's you're in luck. These are the actual files. Point your browser at them and download. If they are rtsp: files you're out of luck.

I ran into the same challenge but finally figured it out. As you said there are plenty ra converters but none that converts ram. The key is to simply rename the xxxx.ram file to xxxx.ra. It works great. I downloaded Streambox Ripper-don't remember where-and converted my ram files to wave.

Just play your RAM files while record whith another software like Sound Forge.

I don´t know, it´s the hard way.

Real Video to common format, and audio

If the file you want to convert to a wav file is ONLY audio, then Streambox ripper should work fine. If you want to get the video, your sorta screwed.. I know there was a program I got once through quicktime, I think it was a format converter, and allowed to change most video formats, but it was a demo, and very limited, but I THINK it was called videocleaner, or something similar to that....

I talked yesterday with customer service by phone. They said there is NO way to convert an .ra/.rm file to a .wav. That's what they say. Should we believe it?

there is a program to convert, streambox has an old but banned in most places converter than converst rm files and related stream files to mp3 or wav format, im not going to give the site address for risk of bandwidth excess

.ram files are only the sorta link to the .ra file
wherever it is on the net. I think you can see
the location of the .ra files by opening the .ram
file in the likes of notepad. You will see the
link. download the .ra file and convert.

It seems like it's very difficult to find a program that will do this -- but I'm thinking that you could get a cord to hook up your audio-out to your microphone or line-in and get another recording program going as you play it in Real Player.

I've tried this before and gotten sort of crumby quality. Quality probably depends on your sound card. It's worth a shot anyway.
