Reason does some great hoovers too...it's all in the detune of the oscillators that you use...from there tweak away until you get the bass or stab that you are looking for!
The site I've listed below has some good stuff to reference, but the person that runs it seems a bit tight-handed on the info and resources...no cut n' paste on the info contained within!! :P

Try this site for a brief tutorial. Also try Yogen's Vocal remover v1.07. That I know takes out most of the vocals, but as far as keeping the backup singers, my advice would be to select the backup singers parts in forge, copy them to a new page, save it, then possibly enhance/increase the volume of that sample, then use a parametric or paragraphic eq to tone down the music part. Afterword, splice that sample back into the original sampled spot and go from there. The only main problem I see is keeping your output levels correct. Good Luck

Use the channel mixer function... inverting one channel and summing the two together should usually work well to remove vocals, but you might lose the backup too... If that doesn't work, using the dynamics function, you might be able to cut out the vocals if you can isolate the lead vocals volume level, and cut that part out..

I have just registered a Macintosh program called "Amp Radio" it cost me $10 which I think is a bargain. One of the better features of the program is that it has a record feature, when selected, starts writing the stream to an MP3 file, excellent idea!!

It sounds like you have a 19 rack mount stereo DBX device. I haven't used one of those for some time. I remember having the facility on my old Tascam Porta1 4 track. DBX was an alternative to Dolby a/b/c and s systems and was never as successful. One my old 4 track you had to use it whilst recording and playing back. It would reduce a selected (fixed on my 4 track) bandwidth and boost it again during playback, cruder than Dolby. The process was supposed to lose the noise (tape noise generally) and it worked quite well although the level of the recording was crucial, too higher level and the playback dynamics were affected.

It's the kind of device that these days would be handy if you had an old reel to reel for mastering. You could insert it inline with the output of your desk and playback through it when running of copies of the result. DBX also made (and maybe still do) standard compressors which are much more usable these days for general recording and mastering, Give me the name of the unit and i'll try and give you a better description of what use it may be to you. It may be a standard compressor if your lucky...
