Hi there,

It's possible to make rap with the ol' <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/FruityLoops_win95/">FruityLoops</a>. From memory you can import your own WAVs and you can edit the sounds within FruityLoops itself. You just have to explore a bit.

<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/AcidMusicDemo/">ACID</a> is also useful for rap as well. If you have a library of samples you can quickly put together a basic track. If all else fails, try <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/HammerHead_Rhythm_Station/">Hammerhead</a> out. It's freeware and with a bit of work you can make some nifty drum loops.

Freeware Sequencer?

Does anyone know of a free program thats like a sequencer, sorta like Rebirth, but that allows you to assign REAL samples, such as a bass drum here and a snare there? I know all about Tuareg, Hammerhead, and thats kinda what I need, but I need it to handle stereo samples, also, when I change the BPM, I dont want the samples to be stretched or changed, like hammerhead does. Anyone got an idea if there is such a program?

I run http://www.beatcenter.com/ and have DJ's that send me entire cd's with separated tracks. In order to avoid the 2.5 hour real-time rip/encode/upload process, Im trying to find a Software that can take an entire CD (not individual tracks) and either convert it to 1 WAV file or 1 .RA (realaudio) format. I got DISKMAID. This seems to do the trick, but it does it in real time taking 74mins per CD.. PLEASE HELP!!!

Rebirth doesn't like Logic

I'm running Logic Platinum 4.1 on a G4 mac. (spot the rich boy... where? not me!)

I can't get Rebirth to sync to Logic. If I start up Rebirth after Logic, I'm asked for some VST thing? What does this mean? What do I use in the arrange window? Audio instrument? What settings/preferences do I need?

Also, Rebirth on it's own, I can't get it to route out of the Audiowerks8 card - it just comes out the mac speaker.

Is all futile? Please help.

Advise me about changing from MAC to PC

I've been using Mac(Performa PowerMac 6200) for a while now. Its starting now to give trouble.
Should I buy PC. I know about availability of software, lower prices etc., but are there any
other arguments?I use a Roland xp50 synth and Cubasis AV software.

Maybe you should stay with a Mac but possibly upgrade to a PowerPC G3. It would offer more processing speed, but whatever you decide, make sure it has plenty of extra ram because it seems as though all of the digital audio programs need large amounts of ram to function smoothly, whether IBM or Mac. Korg X3 .sng

files on a P.C without converting all those cool
sounds to crappy GM sounds?. Also My P.C is running
windows 98 and it will not even entertain a floppy
with a .sng file on it. So I can't even save to Hard

Ive had an Atari 1040 for too many years to mention. Its served me well in studios and on the road. Im running the Notator prog on it and I like the prog and it does more or less everything I want it to. BUT my Atari is getting tired now and the monitor needs replacing etc. and Im wondering if its worth going for a PC (prob laptop so I can do all the other PC type stuff too. So. Will a PC run Notator? do I need an emulator (whatever that is) Do I need any specific spec on the PC? ---- Help me out here its a long way from the 70s to 2000 and I wasnt up to speed with the technology then!

filter noise & hiss from cassette for CD burning

i have got some old cassettes that i would like to clean up and get rid of the hiss and then burn a CD of the cleaned up songs. does anyone have any good suggestions of what will do teh best job for cleaning up an old cassette tape? thanks

There's a program called "Ray Gun" that seems to be pretty effective at reducing tape hiss. I've tested it briefly on a Mac with good results and I think it's available for an IBM too. There's a Demo available at Arboretum.com ? that you can check out to determine if it will be useful for you.Good Luck

Hi my name is chris. I have been a musician for 15 years now. i recently purchased cakewalk pro 8.0. My friend gave me the registered version of nova station i really like it. I have been searching for patches or plugins that will give me more sounds in my cakewalk program. since i am new at this i am not sure what to download. I have an idea that sound fonts might help but I am not sure, my soundcard is a yamaha ess. could you send me a list of the freeware and shareware that works with cakewalk and my soundcard.

Thanks for getting back to me.
All I really want is something that I can change my WAVS to things like echoing, etc. and repeating some of the parts of the wavs in editing.
My girlfriend has one on her compaq and it's called a Wav Maker. So in reality it is just something that will EDIT wavs or songs to make them more interesting. : )
I hope that answers the questions. I really don't know how else to explain it.
It seemed really simple to me until I went to go and look.
I have players for recording, etc. but they don't edit or change anything that I would like it to do.
Let me know if I need to explain anything else.
I know how much there is out there but in 3 days I haven't come up with anything but a $70 program that I don't really feel that I need.
Just want something simple...

Hello Mary-Ellen,

Please explain a little more about what you mean by
'Wav Maker'. Are you looking for something to make
wav files from midi files or mp3 files or do you need
software to record audio onto your computer, or are
you looking for a program that will let you create
music all on your PC with the result beign a wav file?

Once we know a little more there's lots of people
here who would love to help.

A couple more to add to the list Alf gave: Music Recognizer (http://www.chat.ru/~andreenk) and AKoff Music Composer (www.akoff.com), which is the one I use. You can sing into it and record it as an instrument track, but you will probably have to take it into a MIDI sequencer and edit the notes to fix the mistakes.

None of them do more than single note at a time conversion. Amazing MIDI claims to be able to do chords, but I haven't gotten any good results from the few tests I've done.

Its only possible currently in limited ways. You can
convert a wav file of single polyphony (eg a singer)
and some software claim to be able to read more than
one note at a time (you get varying results and it
takes a looooong time to do it) but no software can
convert a whole arranged song.

Whether or not this will ever be possible is more of
a philisophical debate rather than technical because
of the nature of midi itself.

A good program for converting Midi to Wav is wingroove. You can use it's wav emulator, or your soundcards midi drivers

Unless your XP50 has a digital out, this is impossible. Because you have to get the sound into your computer from your synth. Sound files are different from midi files. Midi files just have trigger information, such as when notes are turned on and of, volume, expression ... not what the actual sound is. Your best bet is to get a soundcard with a low noise level and a wide frequency range. Then plug your analog outs directly into it with some decent cord and no special adapters plug onto them. Then record directly to your hard drive. If you want to get more complicated you could record each of your tracks seperately and turn your computer into a hard disk recorder.
