What the heck are Soundfonts?! d=o
Ok.. I'm sure most of you are all shaking your head right now.. hehe.. but I'm a little new to this stuff.. I've been seeing these little soundfont collections of music.. drum samples.. etc.. what are they used for? They go into a special program? hmmm.. if someone could mail me, I'd be very grateful!! Thank you! d=)

Alright, I was shaking my head 'til I got a headache, but stil...
Soundfonts are sample banks used for Soundblaster soundcards. If you have an AWE32/64 or SBlive! you can load these sounds into your user memory and play them on your keyboard or sequencer.
There's one ore two shareware software samplers that can read and play soundfonts as well ....
Help with Roland S770 sampler
does anyone know anything about the S770 (or maybe S760 as i think its the same thing without internal HD)? could you point me in the direction of some pages for it on the web as i can't find any and someone must be out there. i cannot get my head around its sys ex so stuff like cubase mixer maps would be handy. also is there any way of getting it to stop changing which partial info you are looking at when a midi sequence is playing so you could, for instance, change the ADSR envelope on one sound in context, i.e. with everything else (at the moment the screen just jumps between pages for whatever partial is playing so adjustments are impossible). thanks, if anyone can help

Looping .wav files...
Does anyone know the best way or is it even possible to loop a .wav file, get rid of the extra part of the .wav that didn't fit the loop, and then save the new .wav file? I downloaded zero-x beat creator, and it will automatically loop a .wav, but i couldn't tell from the evaluation version if it would make a new .wav file out of the loop, or not... also, once you have some good loops, is cool-edit the best way to mix them together, or is there something cheaper? thanks for listening....
loop cutting
Recycle, by Steinberg, is a good program to use for this. It can automatically locate good loop points in a wav file, amd then cut the file into segments according to the loop points and save the segments as new wav files. You can then choose the segment you want, and delete the rest.

The new computer monitors with the flat screens are amazing. The amount of space that I have

I'm an old fart trying to learn this new medium.
Please forgive me if I ask some different questions...
How do I record MP3 files? Explain what a "ripper" does? Are they all the same quality? Where can I get one for free?
Can I record vinyl records onto MP3 files? Audio Tape? Radio Shows?

You don't need a Mac to do this. On this site you can find an abundance of CD rippers that can write your song to a .wav or .mp3 file
If you want to record old records and tapes the best way to do it is to connect your amplifier's line output (i.e. your tape out) to your soundcard's line in input.
It would be best to connct your tapedeck DIRECTLY to your computer's input.

If you're on a Macintosh, all you do is click and drag the file from the CD's icon onto the "ripper".
A "ripper" is the software that converts the CD audio track to an MP3 file. They are not all the same quality. You can get working demo versions of several "ripper/readers". .. see the back issues of hitsquad.com's newsletters .
A qualified "yes." You will need some way to a) import the audio into your computer and b) convert the analog audio to a digital signal.
Some Mac's have this capability built in. Other models and Windoze land users need to purchase and (cringe) install a Digital Audio (D/A) board, its driver and associated software.
MJ Studio looping
Anyone know how to loop a track in MJ Studio? Or in layman's terms: set the song to repeat?

I'm going to buy a cd recorder in order to make data backup and audio mastering. I have a pc amd k6/3 with sound blaster live.
what would be better for me:
cd-r or cd-rw? eide or scsi?

cd-rw? eide REWRITE IS CHEAPER AND EIDE IS GOOD ENOUGHT IF YOU GET A RECORDER WITH AT LEAST 2MB BUFFER

i am trying to copy drakan it is 676.91mb 77.o1 min and 346580 blocks i am using a creative 6424 and a 700mb cdr the burn appears to go along normal baut at 99% the cd door opens and closes by itself and finishes closing the cd with no errors it will install but when you go to play the game it gives the dreaded please insert cd box so i checked the copy and it reports that there is 11 mor blockes than the original at 346591 oh ya there appears to be a bar code on the original cd hope thats not the problem oh ya im using easy cd pro any help would be great have enough coasters already if anybody needs some email me ha ha

yeah seems like these days companies are putting bar codes on their cd and the blocks they program into them are like flies on a piece of shit! well in the world of computors there is always a way around something but i have no idea where to start on this one. you might try to burn a demo or an old copy of it

I have the lattest version Music match jukebox software that changes mp3 to wav, and wav to mp3 full 320 ups maybe we can trade for something...
also get Microsoft net meeting, so you can share files fast!

I use MP32WAV Professional.
Downloaded it for free from www.download.com
The only problem I have had is for a FEW tracks another program told me the WAV files weren't "CD Quality".
oops.
But it works 95% of the time, and I'm happy with it.

music match jutebox will do this basically drag and drop or audio grabber both can be found at tucows.com

Use Winamp, drag mp3s into winamp playlist. click in the top left to bring down the menu, go to options,preferences, click the third one down, says output disk writer or something, then play the songs, you wont hear them but it will transfer your mp3's to a specified folder in wave format

select disc at once and check ignore illegale toc warning or just get cdrwin e-mail if you cant find cdrwin and ill send it off
hope this helps
turn off jitter corection, ignore illegal toc type,continue on unreadable data and ignore read errors

converting .cda to .wav
i have been trying to copy as cd that has tracks on it in
.cda format and unfortunately the cd-rom will not even read
past the 9th track any ideas?the disc plays perfectely

You can use .wav files with the program it supports mostly every kind of wav file except commpressed format. This will crash the mixman studio. When you finish a track it gets sved as what the call a .mix file this can be exported into real audio, wav, sound font and even .mp3 format. Its an easy to use software and well worth the money considering it's under $90 and all the samples that come with the software and the ones you can purchase seperatly are all royalty free these include artist's such as Skinny Puppy(Industrial Band) heaven 17(dance) and K-Klass(house) hope this helps you

wavelab master section doesn't work?
When I apply plugin effects (esp. freefilter) to wav files in wavelab under the Master Section using "APPLY", the destination file is the same as the source file. What have I done wrong, anybody?

When you hit the Apply button you get a menu that enable you to choose what to do with the new file.
The default is "process in place" and that will overwrite your current file. The other option is to save the output in a NEW file. I believe there's even a third option, but I can't recall...
