What you are describing is a process that will cancel out the mono part of a stereo signal. This is not so hard to accomplish manually, and there are some VST plug-ins which can do this. Unfortunately, offhand, I can't remember what the name is of the plug-in which does this easiest, but I believe there might be one amongst the <b>mda plug-ins</b>. If you have any outboard (hardware) processors, you might even find a similar function there. Some reverbs have this setting.

Anyhow, if you'd like to do it manually, you can. You need an editor program that can do INVERT commands (inverse polarity). The editor needs to also be capable of mixing two files (adding them together). The higher the bit-resolution, the better. 32 or 24-bit resolution is handy if you are dealing with 16-bit files. The higher bit resolution allows you to add files without clipping. Keep in mind that each bit of a single sample represents 6dB, so if you add two normalized 16bit samples, you need at least a 17bit place to put the results. Likewise, if you have a 24bit sample, you can afford to lower it's amplitude 48db (the equivalent of 8bits) and still keep up to 16bit quality of amplitude. The higher bit resolution also ensures that this process creates less noisy results.

Essentially, what you do is this:

1 Copy your left and right channels into a new blank file that has a higher bit resolution. Lower the amplitude of this file 6dB or 50%.
2 Mix the left and right channels together equally to form a mono file. The new file should also have the higher bit-resolution so that there should be no clipping after you mix the channels.
3 Invert the new mono file. This is the important part.
5 Mix the new mono file with a higher bit-resolution copy of the original stereo file.
6 You should now have a stereo file with the mono part cancelled out. You can save this as whatever file type is most convenient, at whichever bit-resolution. You can normalise it also.

I may have made a mistake in this description, but I'm generally trying to convey that you can mix inverted soundwaves to subtract them from another. You just have to make sure that if any part of the addition (mix) gets louder, there won't be any clipping.

I have used this technique in the past to create versions of stereo pairs that had 0% mono and 100% stereo spatial information.

Unless your WAV or MP3 contains just a single instrument, then what you're asking is impossible. A MID file contains no music, only data about which instruments are playing and what notes. It's impossible to get this information from a WAV or MP3 file.

sounds like you had a fun st. patties day! There are lots of VST and DirectX plugins available at hitswuad.com/smm one of them should do what you need. Be aware that to process vocals in real time you will need a zero latency sound card! SB PCI doesn?t cut it, but SB Live or the new Audiogy will work nicely.
