DRUM WRITING SOFTWARE
I need to add drums to songs I wrote that have been converted to wav format. Is there any drum software that can do this? It would need to be able to detect the beat in a music file (including tempo changes) and synchronize the drum track (which should also be modifiable) to the music.

You want to compose for guitar and bass, but you don't play them, right? I'm partial to Jammer for music composition, and melody (or harmony) assistant for working on a score. As far as sounds go, Midi is okay, but if you want realistic guitars and bass even the most expensive sound fonts don't do the real thing justice.

Getting started on Mac OSX... what should I get?
I've just downloaded ProTools free demo, but I'm looking for anything I can get my hands on... for free... to play with audio files and start making some rythms here.
I know some basic audio analog stuff, but want to know where to start, or even where to look for "how to"s...
thanks
Re: Getting started on Mac OSX... what should I get?
Try Spark for OSX which is currently a beta and is therefore free. It works well though..
Try Reason which is the big boys rebirth and is available in demo form although I don't know if you can run it in OSX yet. Run it in OS9 (hold 'ALT' as you boot the computer and select the OS9 partition)
Live is an OSX program which has got a lot of press, demo available. I have seen this running at a show and although it looks a little cheap, it's very cool.
Check out the link below as an excellent source for all OSX shareware, freeware and demos. Check the audio section as there are a lot of things I haven't tried yet. Software synths and stuff...

i have burned the orkester cd and i found an image file for it so when i put it in reason reads it sa the proper orkester sd. i was wondering if anyone had an image file for the factory soundbank cd.
i think the image file has something to do with the registry.
can anyone help me
Re: REASON Factory Sound bank.rfl
actually the frl file is only 192kb so whos the idiot he did include the file extention.
Re: REASON Factory Sound bank.rfl
: actually the frl file is only 192kb so whos the idiot he did include the file extention.
actually the file is alot bigger than that. Think about it, that file your talking about is from a cd that has nothing but sound files on it. considering most cd's are 750mb that cd had two sources, the factory sound files and the orkester files.....its around 500mb if your looking to dload it. anything smaller is a partial file unless it shows up as zipped or rar
Re: REASON Factory Sound bank.rfl

Re: REASON Factory Sound bank.rfl Q U E S T I O N S
Hello All
Here are some questions:
I downloaded a 520 Meg file for the Factory Sound Bank with kazaa just now. Reason does not read it. When I checked the properties of the file, the name is:
Factory Sound Bank.rfl.exe
Is that right? I do not beleive it should have the exe extension at the end since this file is a data bank. Am I right?
What should I do so that Reason can read it? I already tried renaming it.
Thanks
Re: REASON Factory Sound bank.rfl Q U E S T I O N S
you reburn the file into a fresh cd and thats were you rename it to Factory Sound Bank.rfl witout the .exe
should work

::::-) hehe, downloaded a 2kb fakefile pretending to be a 500 meg -rfl file. just mount with deamon tools :))
Re: REASON Factory Sound bank.rfl
You cant mount an .rfl file with daemon. daemon mounts .iso files so that it reads it as an .rfl. Since there is no factory sound bank.iso, you cant just mount it, you have to burn it to a cd, but it still doesnt work for me.

system exclusive/ dumping of Midi info from DR5 into cakewalk so
I have a DR5 rhythm section and I have a few songs that I would like to transfer from the Dr5 to a cakewalk software program. I know that I must dump the information into the program, but I'm at a loss on how to go about doing this.
Each on of my songs has 3 voice tracks and 1 drum track. If I could dump each track to an individual MIDI track on my cakewalk program, that would be ideal.
My perception is that if I can get a track for track layout in Cakewalk, then I'll be able to do things such as edit the stucture of my songs and add effects. Or maybe I have to translate the MIDI file in Cubase to a wav file in order to add effects.
note: what I mean by a track for track layout is that I would like "track 1" on my DR5 to have a specific track in cakewalk when I go to do the dump, preferrably track 1.
I understand that I will need to somehow prepare the cakewalk software program to recieve system exclusive messages from my DR5 on a dump. How is this achieved?
One last question is: how is the DRUM MAP layed out in Cakewalk? My drum pads are all edited to different settings. [i.e.(that is) soft kick is now edited to hard kick etc.] Will this mean that when I play back my song in cakewalk that the drums will be all out of whack? Or will the cakewalk program recognize my program change messages, and play the song pretty much how it is on my DR5?
well I think that's enough questions for now. Don't break of sweat trying to answer these questions for I am a simple man and I like simple responses. Of course I know much is not simple in this world so any response to any of these questions would be greatly apprieciated. My email address is beebop5000@hotmail.com if anyone would rather contact me that way. If you know of anyone that also could throw me some advice or some good sources of information send them my way. I'm always up for learning new information about this music phenomenon called MIDI.

MIDIman stand up
You might not need SysEx at all. I maybe misunderstand you, but it sounds like you could do this:
Set up your computer to use the drum machine as a master clock for synchronization. This is so your drum machine controls the starting and stopping of your computer sequencer. This may require using a different sequencer, if yours doesn't support external clocking or doesn't support MTC or MMC (Midi TimeCode or Midi Machine Code). Of course, your drum machine must be able to be set up as a master, also. Sometimes this is described as slaving the computer to the drum machine.
Send your drum sequence into the computer using MIDI cables. Set up your sequencer to receive on all channels (receive all channels = omni mode).
Record your drum sequence by pressing play. Your drum sequence should be playing as it normally does, but while sending it's midi output to the computer's midi input.
When you use Omni mode, all midi data gets recorded. Your sequencer might not call it this. Just make sure that your sequencer is set up to receive all channels. If it can't, you might have to just record each midi channel separately.
If you are forced to record each channel separately, you'll have to give extra care to making sure that each channel is sent to the correct number. 1 is sent to 1, 2 is sent to 2, 3 is sent to 3,...16 is sent to 16.
You drum machine may or may not send instrument note-on data on separate channels. Sometimes, each drum sample just matches a separate note on the musical scale. You will know after you get the data into the computer or after you read your drum machine's manual.
Other considerations: program change signals for drum machines usually causes a changing of drum patterns or songs. Program change signals for other midi sound devices have other meanings:
MIDI program change
___________________
multieffects unit = change to effect #
hard disk recorder = change to song #
hard disk recorder = change to marker #
lighting unit = change lights to setup #
digital mixer = change to mixer snapshot #
program change is also a bit more complex for
GM or XGM type sounds. (General MIDI, Extended General MIDI) Hope that you won't be dealing with this stuff.
When you run into problems, that's when it's time
to get books or look for file to read from online. Reading is power.
Just remember what you are dealing with.
A sequencer records note data, not sounds.
A multitrack recorder records audio data, not note data.
A drum machine with a MIDI output sends note data.
A drum machine with a MIDI input receives note data.
A drum machine's audio outputs can only be connected to something that uses audio, not notes.
MIDI is a form of timecode, NOT a form of audio.
Audio is NOT a form of timecode, but digital outputs and inputs (SPDIF,ADAT,AES/EBU) are!
If your sequencer can deal with both MIDI and audio, then it's really 2 or more programs in one: It has a sequencer, and a multitrack mixer. If you can do editing, it also has an editor. The computer acts like it's all one thing, but as long as you're dealing with MIDI, there's a distinction, especially if you use external devices.
It's probably easiest just to set up your drum machine to play out each audio track separately and record each track onto a separate audio track. When you're done, you'll have a multitrack mix of your drum machine's parts. Now calculate the audible BPM of your song (Listen to it and count the BPM). After a few tries, to be sure, set the BPM of your computer program to be equal what you counted yourself. Then, move the audio tracks until the start of each beat is on the start of each beat in the audio waveforms.
To calculate the BPM of any song you are listening to, use a stopwatch and a calculator.
240 divided by {the time of one loop} = BPM
Trust me, it's much faster and easier than programs and stuff. With a calculator, you can get superior accuracy, both mathematically and audibly.
Good luck. Be sure to ask other folks. I'm not that good at giving simple answers.
Re: MIDIman stand up
connect DR5 and computer with midi wires. (correctly)
Open cakewalk go to view sysex, find you receive dump from instrument (start dump from instrument), click it , do the dump from DR5, it will increase the number of bytes, when it stops press done.
Save it .
You'll have in it every thing from your DR5 in it .
Can be restored by sending it to DR5.
