GNMIDI HELP ON COVERTING .RMI TO MIDI

Does anyone know what command to use in GNMIDI to convert an .rmi file to .mid? The program claims to be able to perform that function, I can't seem to find the right command. My .rmi file opens within GNMIDI but what do I do then?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, If anyone knows or knows of another utility, please let me know!

Thanks,

FINALE

FINALE. It's expensive, but it can definately do what you need, and it's used by professionals. IF you are a student, you can get a discount. Finale 2002 just came out.

If you need freeware, just look up NOTATION PROGRAMS under MUSIC SOFTWARE. Any decent notation program can TRANSPOSE.

Jayne,
Try de-selecting the button for dotting a note. This button is part of the notation palette.
You may choose to dot a note; however, you must then choose to not dot a note to go back to normal note function.

Early recorded sounds

Early Recorded Sounds

From wax cylinders to DVDs, sound recordings have come a long, long way. The low-tech history of early recorded sound is preserved on the high-tech medium of the Internet at Early Recorded Sounds, a voyage into the late 19th and early 20th century experiments that started it all.

Wax cylinders emerged in 1888 as the record standard: a 2" by 4" cylinder of brittle, wax-like material that recorded and played sounds. Hear those sounds, like the Liberty Bell March from 1897, on digitally re-recorded cuts that spurn noise reduction in favor of hearing the real thing, without actually time traveling. Listen for free online, read all the history and details, or visit the music store to buy recordings.

Re: Early recorded sounds

There is a nice store in Minneapolis, MN called Vintage Vinyl that can sell you an early recorder if you like.

Enable saving with a DEMO?

[The body of this post has been lost]

Re: Enable saving with a DEMO?

There's no way you can enable the save option on a demo. You may as well just re-write the software from scratch. Have you tried any of the auction sites?

recorder for Mac OsX

Hello
I would like to record some analog music and burn some CDs. What program is suitable for recording from LP-records on to the HD of my OsX-machine
Thanks for suggestions
Peter

Looky here...

Peter,

Go to the link below as you can download 'Spark' for free. It is an Audio editor for OSX from a good company and I suspect it will allow you to record from the Mac's input.

Check it out..

Returned CD "Lets Talk About Love"

I returned a CD today or tried. The store would not return my money, so I destroyed the CD in the Store. I wanted to return the CD because it was copy protected and not labeled Copy Protected.

I purchase Celine Dion’s new album “Lets Talk About Love” and could not move it on to my computer. The store would not return my money so I will never purchase another CD of her Music, nor shop in that store because of their return policy.

I would not have purchased the CD if I would have know it was copy protected in the first place, but it was not labeled.

Sorry Celine, but your record company has turned me off.

Re: Returned CD "Lets Talk About Love"

You would probably be within your rights to take some sort of action if the CD was not labelled as copy-protected. But, man, what were you doing with a Celine Dion CD in the first place? ;)

My bet is that smaller labels and the more underground operators are not going to take up this copy-protection. They know that people do share music and that it is often an effective way of getting people into new artists.

Mastering/compressor software

Hello, Anyone know of any free, or at least really cheep, mastering software? Something with a compressor? I work with wav and mp3s files, and I have very lettle money to spend. Thanks for your help. -JM

I know where youre coming from, you want a nice 'fat' sound from your recordings/mixdowns without spending a lot of dosh. I can se 2 approaches to this problem. There are available 'cheap' mastering plugins for vst/directx and the like, but this is the problem, they are cheap, in terms of sound quality as well! My advice to you, as I give to students where I work is to avoid such things like the plague! Examples of inexpensive (avoid saying cheap for legality!) mastering plugins include Steinberg's "Loudness Maximiser" and Waves "Maxx Bass".
Stop me if I'm preaching to the converted, but I'll just detail in breif how mastering equipment works. When a mastering processor is used in a studio, it consists of several dynamics processors (compressor/limiters) which increase the energy contained within the sound signal whilst avoiding clipping levels. These dynamics processors are each set to work on a distinct band of frequencies so the relative levels of the mix can be adjusted at different frequencies (eg if your bass sounds too thin/warm you can add punch by compressing the range 100-400hz). Some mastering compressosrs also have a facility to increase the top-end harmonic content (an 'exciter').
Software plugins, however, generally work by compressing the entire frequency range the same amount, with a very high ratio, hence you can 'jack up' the input signal to increase the perceived loudness of the track without running into clipping. Some software works not to entirely prevent clipping, but to apply 'soft clipping' whereby the distortions applied to the waveforms are 'slewed' to richen even rather than odd harmonic content. This souns more pleasing to the ear, and is similar to the type of distortion acheived by overdriving valve/tube circuits or analog tape.
This is not, however condusive to accurate sound reproduction, ok it will sound 'louder', but at the cost of overall sound quality, and loss of detail/clarity/positional information. What's the soulution on a budget? There is no easy answer to this. I'm not sure if youre planning to master your own mixdowns or prerecorded material, so I'll offer advice relevant to both.

If your trying to master your own material--start by refining your mixing technique. Use a little compression at mixdown on things like bass guitar, vocals (not too much!). By using a little compression at mixdown, you can help avoid too many extreme transients in the finished product. Be careful not to squeeze your mix too much or youll loose all character. The secret is to maintain dynamic range but avoid extreme transients. Your mixdoen should fit as smoothly as possible into your system headroom. Once youve got a mix, have a look at it in a wave editor, if you can see any extreme deviation, go in manually (at a very close zoom) and limit these extreme peaks using a change gain function. You may then consider using a compression plugin, DONT USE A THRESHOLD BELOW -6dB SET RATIO TO AT LEAST 3.5:1 (presuming you record at -6 peaking to -3). This will help smooth out other lumps without squeezing too much, have a good listen, make sure your bass/hf doesnt 'pump'. After compression, NORMALIZE yur wave file and voila, a mastered mix without the need for plugins. If your doing a demo, its better to ahve a slightly 'quieter' mix than one thats distorted by a messy 'cheap' mastering plugin.

If your dealing with prerecorded material:

This has already been masterd!! (If its pop/rock/etc). There should be no need for you to apply mastering, just make sure you record it in at maximum volume before clipping, or MAYBE use a ripper (such as audiograbber)which turns CDDA into .wav. Also, NORMALIZE your wav's/mp3's.

Thats it!

Any further questions? Feel free to email me.

>> Unfortunately right. Fortunately, not completely. iZotope Ozone as a plugin does perfectly all of that you wrote above in your answer. And one thing I'd like to tell all "hardware lovers": there is nothing to be unable to simulate on a powerful computer; especially in non-human behavior, like electronics. If there is not enough noise in software "gear", there are a lot of plugins making addition noise, clipping, tape simulation and so on. Just don’t buy cheap software. For $200 - $300 you can buy nice software (like BBE Sonic Miximazer, iZotope Ozone, etc…) to make a sound of you records "phat" or more commercial (saying correctly). Don't be afraid - commercial studious are already started to use them. Just don't be an orthodox :-)
P.S. I'm not an engineer making one of those products. I'm just using them.

midi in help pci128

I have a casio wk1630 and sbpci128 sound card connected thru midi to joystick cable. The computer is 700mhz athlon 512 mb ram.

Symptoms: Sometimes weird sounds come through to computer, usually none. Notes in software are wrong (I have tried "Ensemble Studio" in win98 and "Anvil Studio" in win2k. Same problem.) I have tried changing cable. I have taken keyboard back to store, and it seems to do the midi out thing fine there. I have fiddled with user configuration in system settings (Midi in and out set to External Midi, Made sure that idf files are in setting (using general midi files). Tried enabling/disabling joystick, changing from autosense to analog.

I have heard some sound cards can be finicky on midi-in? Has anyone had any experience conquering this problem? I have heard in one post that some sound cards be sensitive to irq and other resource settings - is this the prob?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Sincerely,

Craig

MusicTime Softward

I have a 1994 version of MusicTime software which has developed a few small problems, such as: it is slower to respond when I am writing music note-by-note; drop-down menus for graphics won't let me move them to another part of the page; etc. Is there an upgrade I can buy that would solve my problems. If so, how much is it? Thanks!

Sampling: I'm a novice, but....

Can someone explain to me how sampling works if you can't segregate tracks of a song. Are you just supposed to replicate the part you want with a synth or by other means? Thanks for feedback.

Re: Sampling: I'm a novice, but....

Sampling can be a very skillful art. You can get the sounds you want if you're willing to work at it with audio editors and EQ. Quite often tho' you can easily grab drum beats off records, bass intros and acapella vocals. In other instances though, you can re-create sounds with software. I've never really been much good at that myself.

: Can someone explain to me how sampling works if you can't segregate tracks of a song. Are you just supposed to replicate the part you want with a synth or by other means? Thanks for feedback.

i get ya

nigel cleared up the question i get it now

fat boy slim uses the intros to traks where there is clear vocal before the bass+drums come in etc. grab stuff like that or be creative and don't steal samples atall. ofcourse you'd use independant drum sample hits to create a drum line and individual bass hits to create a bass line etc. have u tried a demo of fruityloops?

Re: Sampling: I'm a novice, but....

Sampling the electronic version of a tape recorder. All a sampler does is record what is fed into it in electronic form. There is no way you can segregate tracks from a stereo mix. The only way, as you say, is to either play the track yourself, or find a version of the song in MIDI format.

Re: Sampling: I'm a novice, but....

i don't understand the question atall. Does Andy's reply answer it? If not please rephrase + be as clear as possible.

Digital Rip from CD

I can´t rip from cd (MP3) with audiocatalyst. The option in the preferences menu that would make digital conversion of CD to MP3 is not available.
In the program's help they make reference to a new and updated driver for the system to work but I can't findit anywhere.
Thanx

Re: Digital Rip from CD

Get hold of a copy of CDex. It's free and handles both CD to WAV and CD to MP3.

Writing hard house tracks is not easy. It may be said that hard house is a very simplistic form of music, and should therefore be easy to put together. There is an element of truth in this, but its not all about complex melodies and large orchestrations with hard house, its all about the sounds you use. Importance is given to how the sounds fit together in a mix/arrangement, and although there are some basic ground rules for different types of music, creative mixing/arrangement is not something you can learn overnight, it is quite an involved process, but youll soon start to see(hear!!) results if you persevere. The first thing you need, as you so rightly suggest in your email is some kind of hardware/software with which to create your compositions. Comming from a music background, and working with music technology on a day to day basis, I consider myself to have experience with a wide range of software and hardware. I am as yet unaware of any software for the PS2 which would allow true creative control over musical arrangement. There is software for PS1, called Muzik, but its old and very limiting. I would suggest as a relative newcommer to music composition (i presume) that you will be on a limited budget and would like to get 'hands on' as soon as possible. I reccommend you get (if you havent already) a computer, and probably a PC (I'm not a salesman for microsoft, but they are relatively inexpensive compared to MACS, and there is a large range of share/freeware for music creation available for the PC). I suggest you get at the minimum a pentium II 700 Mhz with 128hb ram, 10gb hdisk if you can afford it. If youve got some money to spend, get Steinberg Reason, this basically gives you a studio in a PC, but it is quite complex to learn if youre new to (virtual) studio technology. I would suggest you get a copy of Fruity Loops, this is a first class piece of software, and works as a sequencer (allowing you to arrange patterns of notes/drum hits) and a sampler (allows you to determine the exact sounds it plays) in one. It also has some useful effect (allowing you to beef up your tracks and add sonic textures).

I think thats enough to start with!! To get Fruity Loops, try www.fruityloops.com

Any more questions, technical or creative, feel free to email me.

Re: I want to compose Hard House tracks but dont know where to s

Learn 4 on the floor and build from that. Eveything can make a 4 on the floor beat as long as you have the tools and the samples.

You can use Audacity (but should buy Acid) then download a ton of samples online.

live recording + high compression

I have heard of a program that records live music from radio over the internet.
I have found ones that record in wave format, however I am needing MP3 compresion or better.
